3DS sells 795,000 in November, tops DS's first year total

Glasses-free 3D handheld tops 2.37 million threshold after eight months; Super Mario 3D Land sells 625,000 as Zelda: Skyward Sword posts first-week sales of 600,000 copies.

The industry-tracking NPD Group this afternoon released its US retail sales figures for November, trumpeting the successes of best-selling game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and best-selling system Xbox 360. Since the NPD Group wasn't boasting of Nintendo's efforts, the 3DS maker took that task upon itself.

Super Mario 3D Land helped goose 3DS sales for the month.
Super Mario 3D Land helped goose 3DS sales for the month.

According to Nintendo, the month of November saw the 3DS surpass the first-year sales total of the original DS, topping 2.37 million systems sold. Last month saw the glasses-free 3D handheld sell 795,000 systems in the US, assisted by the mid-month launch of Super Mario 3D Land, which has now topped 625,000 copies sold.

Nintendo's newest system wasn't its best-selling, however. The Wii sold 860,000 systems during November, punctuated by its strongest Black Friday ever, with 520,000 systems sold in a single day. The total US installed base of the Wii has now reached 37.7 million consoles. On the software front, the Wii saw the release of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which Nintendo said had the largest launch day in franchise history and sold over 600,000 copies in its debut week.

Nintendo is starting to get into kill mode. Tomorrow Monster Tri-G drops in Japan too which will move a ton of units for Nintendo. I almost feel bad for Sony. In Japan, Nintendo has Dragon Quest, Pokemon, and Monster Hunter, all exclusively on 3DS plus 1st party kings like Mario, Kart, and Zelda. I don't know how Sony can expect to compete with that in Japan.

The 3DS numbers show a good turnaround from the lauch figures, but they're not particularly impressive on their own. First, it's November...Black Friday...the largest single retail day of the year. Second, there was probably a release of pent-up demand, as those people who said "I'll buy one around the holidays" finally had to pull the trigger. And finally, the 3DS costs the same as the DSi XL, so many people who were just going out to replace/upgrade their DS Lites probably went ahead and got the 3DS. Ultimately, Nintendo needs to get better third party support. Once again they seem to want to be the number one publisher for their console, and I don't think it's going to hold up as well with the PS Vita coming on the high end and iOS at the low end.

I work at Best Buy, and we can't even keep them on the shelves. Ever since Nintendo dropped the price on them because of the poor opening sales, we can't get enough in.

Most people who own or are going to buy the Wii probably don't even know about the Wii U

I already knew the 3DS had potential. Patience was key. :D I am still amazed at how many Wiis were sold right when the Wii U is right around the corner. Go Nintendo! :D

People were calling this system dead before it really even got started. Nintendo is well on its way to winning the handheld race.... for the fourth generation in a row.

Everyone knew that once the big games started rolling out, they'll push more systems. Just shouldn't have taken so long. Glad there's awesome stuff to play on it now.

The 3DS is still a little expensive, but with games like Mario Kart 7 and 3D Land, it was hard to resist. Now they just have to offer, a boat load of their old games for free, to entice more people and thank the current owners.

Mario 3D Land is Boss. The second play through on the Special worlds are very challenging. I have sadly killed Mario 50+ times trying to get star coins on one board. Playing Zelda again was also great.

Had Nintendo 3DS had those game eariler they would have had a much better Launch. Too Bad no matter what Generation of Gaming we have Developers always grabbing at straws, for their debut system of games.

Good to hear and a nice slap in the face to all the "3DS is Doomed!" commenters.

Great! This means even if the Vita has a very successful launch (which I hope it does) it won't rock the 3ds boat too much.Don't forget that RE:revelations,MGS,Kid Icarus: Uprising,Luigi's Mansion 2,Animal Crossing, etc. are in the near future too!

Nice. A lot of people, including myself, jumped on the chance to get the 3DS at a great price in November. Its a fun system that provides something none of the others can -- real 3D without dorky and expensive glasses. Plus, Mario Land is great, and I'm willing to bet Resident Evil will be amazing in 3d.

probably doesn't hurt that every new announcement on the PSP vita seems to be geared at alienating its potential customers.

heh, wasn't the CEO or somebody else real high up at Nintendo ashamed of himself earlier this year largely in part due to the 3DS sales...? He ought to give himself a big pat on the back right about now!
