3DS to receive right analog pad, Monster Hunter - Report

Nintendo developing new peripheral to be used on right side of system; Monster Hunter 3G for 3DS outed for end of year release.

If recent rumors are to be believed, Nintendo is developing a second analog pad attachment for its 3DS handheld. Now, thanks to online leaks of the upcoming issue of Famitsu (via Andriasang), it looks like those rumors are proving accurate.

Nintendo fans will get a right analog pad and a new Monster Hunter in the near future.
Nintendo fans will get a right analog pad and a new Monster Hunter in the near future.

According to scans from the magazine, Nintendo is developing a peripheral that adds a second circle analog pad to the 3DS. From pictures on the Famitsu article, the device looks like it will attach to the back of the 3DS (like the system's charge cradle), with the analog stick on the right side. Because the right side of the device blocks the existing right trigger, the attachment also comes with its own trigger button. Currently, there is no release date set for the add-on.

Famitsu also unveiled that Capcom is developing a Monster Hunter title for the 3DS. Titled Monster Hunter 3G, the game will use the swimming mechanics of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, and it will feature 12 categories of weapons, touch-screen controls, and local wireless play.

Details on whether the new Monster Hunter title will use the 3DS StreetPass system have yet to be confirmed. The game is slated to be out in Japan by the end of the year and will be playable at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

An English localized version of the title has yet to be confirmed.

Eh. I have a 3DS. I love it. I want more games. If they come out with this thing, and it makes it more comfortable to play/adds more functionality... I will buy it.. and I doubt I will complain (unless it costs an arm and a leg). Just hope that if it DOES pick up, developers decide to utilize it. Some great addons have been released for systems over the years... developers just have to embrace them. I'm lookin forward to this thing.

I'm not worried about a 2nd analog stick, just as long as the games i play don't need it.

Makes you wish Nintendo added a second circle pad to begin with, oh well. Hopefully that release a redesigned model with two circle pads sometime down the road. It's good they're doing this now, The system's fairly young so developers will be more likely to adopt using the second pad so It won't just be a brick you use for only one game.

Why Nintendo didn't extend the release date to include this second analog pad is beyond me, I think they'll eventually release a system to have the analog pad included like they did for the wiimote when motion plus hit the scene.

I wouldn't mind a new 3DS model with better 3D display, a second analog stick, and perhaps bigger screens.

well if they trying to push this add on in japan with monster hunter that may do fine.. but over here Monster Hunter aint s**t. they gonna need to sell this with a FPS of some kind maybe cod. matter of fact if the 3ds gets a portable version of COD that uses these dual analogs BEFORE the vita launches, then i think Nintendo 3ds will be just fine. A zelda, or Mario may do the same trick, but probably wont have the dedicated online junkies like cod will. Anything less than this.. as in if Nintendo tries to bring it out over here with monster hunter, or if they try to bring it out with a new IP, or anything experimental is a recipe for failure.

@SolidTy On the one hand I'm glad I was not an early adopter this time with the 3DS. On the other hand since they said that the 3DS may be an alternative to the new controller they will be introducing for the Wii U if someone wants one this would be all the more so an alternative to buying one. Although for it to be a true alternative to the Wii U controllers I think it goes without saying that it's going to have to be cheaper than one
Wii U controller
pricewise as well.

@ oUNKNOWNo I agree. Also, a later launch may have provided a better lineup of games. Zelda OoT 3D and DoA: Dimensions would have made great launch games.

A student turns his 2 page essay in the date that it's due.. About a week later, he goes to the teacher and says, "I wanna add one more page to my essay, here you go." I like Nintendo, but if they wanted 2 analog pads, it should've been there from the launch even if it was delayed a bit.

@WolfGrey : I have noticed this pattern now emerging...you say something and once you are caught in it you accuse whoever does that of reading it out of context and then change the context often insulting them and raising your self-righteous bar 12 degrees higher each time...you said, and I quote,''The wii edition(tri) was nothing more than an experiment. The fact the DS G edition has more content is enough proof of that.'' there is no 'reading out of context'' with that...you said the wii is an experiment because ds g edition has more content....once someone (me) points out that there is an obvious reason there is new content you reply in an insult and change the context....must any more be said? Yes it is 100% fact that the 3ds hasn't been doing well but it is also 100% fact that since price-cut 3ds sales have significantly increased (recent news shows a 260% sales increase) and Nintendo Stocks have risen which I strongly believe you will either make an excuse for or deny. And,unless they are abysmal, launches hardly make (or effect the entire life of) systems...we should all know that by now with the psp.

People are ignoring the fact that this is an add on like the Wii Motion Plus, and I don't see a new 3DS anytime soon. Considering Nintendo's situation at the moment.

*sigh* Can't wait til the new model comes out in 3 months with the stick built in and I'm sitting here with my 250 dollar, 6 month old piece of equipment that apparently could have been purchased at $170 from the get-go. I'm getting real sick of your "updates" Nintendo. Put some effort into finalizing a product before you rush it out to your (previously) loyal customers.

At first I really didn't believe the rumor; now we know it's true. If it helps to get the game developers to create new games for the system instead of dragging their heels and cancelling games, then Im all for it.

Something feels wrong. If true, then why would Nintendo bother themselves to launch a red 3DS already? They ain't stupid. Maybe it will be an add-on exclusive for MH 3G (MAYBE).

Oh yeah and while im at it Nintendo Please sort out the ever so narrow viewing angle of the 3DS i only have to play something like pro evo or street fighter and with the natural motion of playing a game i lose the effect because im out of the 7 degree viewing angle, very poor when you think about it.

The problem with trading the 3DS in is that the old one will be worth next to nothing as it will be virtually obselete compared to the new 2 stick version. Way to go Nintendo this is an object lesson in how to piss off 4 million early adopters, make them and developers lose even more confindence in the device as you will have created a two tier system, devs wont know which 3DS version to develop for to maximise profit. It also smacks of a knee jerk reaction from Nintendo as the 3DS hasnt hit the heights of either the original DS or indeed the Wii, maybe next time dont expect people to pay £210 for a handheld in the middle of the worst economic downturn in years same goes for you too Sony, Vita will suffer poor sales because of price. The software lineup for 3DS has little to do with its poor showings as most new consoles have a poor launch lineup its just the way it is rather the economic climate and Nintendos and eventually Sonys arrogance is the true culprit.

I bought a 3DS, and knew that something like this would happen. And now the next version will have it on as standard without a ridiculous cradle attachment... and they'll sort out the crap battery too... and I have only myself to blame. And next time they release something, I'll make the same mistake. :-D

Great. More hacks. If the right analog pad was a great idea why wasn't it in in the first place. Make it and commit to it Nintendo. This is not a good sign....So maybe that's the U is such a kitchen-sink. They didn't want to leave ANYthing out, because they couldn't decide what was the best way to go. You know "let is just be there...just in case". How is anyone going to use that system properly? It doesn't really make sense at all. And it's not even in the way that people were skeptical about the Wii. It could have faltered in its execution, but it had a vision - heck even the cheesy advertisements reflected that. But the U? I really cannot see where that is headed or what it really wants to do or address any specific need in the market in any way at all.

there should be a note posted on Nintendo handheld systems saying "keep the box and all original packaging, because your gonna want to trade this in when the upgrades come". Mark my words one year's time a integrated dual analog 3ds will be released.

@shadowhunter0 They know that the 3DS will sell a lot during the holidays (even after this announcement) because of the 2 new mario games, and yeah they should've included the second analog pad on the console, there was no reason to put out a console that fast.

@shinmew That's the problem with Nintendo in a year or two Nintendo will lauch the 3DS-lite or whatever, and the first one will be crap compared to the new one, you'll go to your local game shop sell your 3ds and pay half of the new one, and then it will happen again with the 3DSI and so on. I think you should wait until the 3DS has at least 1 year. I'm not saying it's not worth the purchase (i have one since day 1), and there are a lot of good games coming this Christmas, but i'm sure me, you and everyone with a 3DS will want the new one when it comes out.

Awww... geeze Nintendo. I WAS about to buy me a 3DS, now I'll just wait for a model to come out that has this attachment already on it. This is getting annoying. Well... if I can't stand it anymore, I'll buy me one anyway, but I'm not near that point yet.

@DiogoDo I know I figure that out since your first post and I was talking about the comment that I made the Nintendo fanboys would buy anything from Nintendo and people should be mad they should have put a second analog stick on it day one and knowing Nintendo they will release a version with it on in less than a year also announcing something like this before the holiday is kinda stupid since allot of people will now wait until a version with the second anlog stick built-in
