3DS to receive right analog pad, Monster Hunter - Report

Nintendo developing new peripheral to be used on right side of system; Monster Hunter 3G for 3DS outed for end of year release.

If recent rumors are to be believed, Nintendo is developing a second analog pad attachment for its 3DS handheld. Now, thanks to online leaks of the upcoming issue of Famitsu (via Andriasang), it looks like those rumors are proving accurate.

Nintendo fans will get a right analog pad and a new Monster Hunter in the near future.
Nintendo fans will get a right analog pad and a new Monster Hunter in the near future.

According to scans from the magazine, Nintendo is developing a peripheral that adds a second circle analog pad to the 3DS. From pictures on the Famitsu article, the device looks like it will attach to the back of the 3DS (like the system's charge cradle), with the analog stick on the right side. Because the right side of the device blocks the existing right trigger, the attachment also comes with its own trigger button. Currently, there is no release date set for the add-on.

Famitsu also unveiled that Capcom is developing a Monster Hunter title for the 3DS. Titled Monster Hunter 3G, the game will use the swimming mechanics of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii, and it will feature 12 categories of weapons, touch-screen controls, and local wireless play.

Details on whether the new Monster Hunter title will use the 3DS StreetPass system have yet to be confirmed. The game is slated to be out in Japan by the end of the year and will be playable at this year's Tokyo Game Show.

An English localized version of the title has yet to be confirmed.

I can't even comprehend this level of stupid. They release the 3DS, add this peripheral which doubles the size of the thing and COMPLETELY changes how it's games are played, and in a couple of months you'll see it being built into the lite version. Adding a right analog stick mid way into a portable consoles life is basically releasing a brand new console and screwing over all your loyal fans, who probably aren't going to be so loyal anymore.

Lesson learned, I'm not buying another system from Nintendo from day 1 because they just let me down every single time. I bought the 3ds on day 1 expecting great things and i've gotten nothing in return except for Zelda Oot and a giant price cut and now they are adding a peripheral that will surely be included in the next 'lite' version and will be more visually appealing than the next big chunk of plastic attached to my nice looking new 3ds. Will definitely not buy the Wii U until i'm sure they have it all worked out. if they are really going to do that they should ship one to every owner that has already bought the system. it's stupid to expect consumers to pay for something that should have been included from the start. I hope this is one of many countless peripheral that nintendo releases for every game system that are just left in the clearance bin.

@ Ovirew : And the problem isn't whether it CAN be done but whether developers WANT it to be done. With many titles, whether it be unique titles or ports, are under pressure to get a good game out fast and they have to almost completely re-format the game and a good portion of developers won't want to do that when Vita will have a second analog-stick...making development much easier for both developers and familiar gaming for gamers (when playing ports) not to mention that it is used for other reasons besides fps...like camera, etc. ds was able to get by with no second analog because psp had none but 3ds will need one in order to get devs attention away from vita.

I'm sure Nintendo will be kicking themselves when this product comes out and sells a jillion copies in Japan. What dopes they are, Capcom did the R&D on this device, paid for the development, testing, manufacturing and they'll be distributing it with the game, is that right? Explain to me again how this makes Nintendo short sighted? I tend to think the dual analog issue was discussed at length when the 3ds was in early design, they had the PSP as an example, they obviously thought it didn't need it. When I'm playing RE: Mercenaries I don't miss that second analog stick at all.

@knicks0320 couldnt agree more. Nintendo usually makes the right marketing decisions. This move here before the holiday season makes absolutely no sense to me. I hope they right the ship bc gaming would not be the same without Nintendo

@ decoy1978 : And,while vita fans would have you believe otherwise, the 3ds has some odd 90 games planned for release (and increasing every week) while Vita lands in behind with only about 65....and if given the option of having a spectacular launch of the titles soon to come out instead of how it was I would still prefer how it was because I would much rather have a bland launch with a ton of hype far into the system's life than a stellar launch followed by monotony and boring wait for interesting games.

@ redrabbit 65: thanks! :D Yeah...Nintendo was really in a danged if they do,danged if they don't situation...if they didn't add the thumbstick then people would complain about how they have no extra thumbstick and if they did add it people would be complaining about how it should've been added all along (like they are now) so there really isn't much Nintendo can do to please everyone. It is pretty obvious which system they WANT to ''win'' when they already condemn the 3ds after 1/10th the average portable life and claim victory for vita before it is even released....the odds were much more in psp's favor last gen and look how that turned out....

so i guess the 3ds lite will have dual analogs? and the early adopters that got the original system get..rehashed 10+ year old NES games and a price drop..GG. between this and the lackluster reception of the Wii-U Nintendos future isnt looking so bright. This is an obvious attempt to play catch up with the psvita.

@ Wolfgrey : I have absolutely nothing against you choosing a system based on the games you like for it,more power to you.But you have no right to judge a system as though it is fact that it is waste.I know of only a dozen games on ps3 that interest me but it is a quality system and I admit that.As I said it is fine if there are even no games on the wii that interest you..that is your taste and you are entitled to that, but it is just that...your taste and is in no way ''fact'' that the wii or any of its games are ''waste'' just because you don't like them. And in regards to mh3g...it would be rather stupid of capcom to install a remake of mhtri with FEWER features...of course they will add bonus content and tweak things...that is the point of remaking a game, otherwise noone would buy it,that doesn't mean the original was crap.

@disneyanime91 I'm sorry, maybe you really feel that way, but I refuse to believe that the touch-screen controls of FPS games on the DS would be better than dual-stick controls. I had Metroid Prime Hunters. I enjoyed the campaign more than many people did, but I found the controls to be very uncomfortable, and to actually make my hands sore while trying to play it. It is one of many reasons why the game isn't as popular as it could have been. Keyboard and mouse layout are comfortable and easy to use, which is why a lot of people prefer them over console controls. I like console controls myself, but that's besides the point. Touch screen controls, at least today, are not anywhere near as intuitive as keyboard and mouse controls or even controller controls. Not on the 3DS anyway. Also, to my knowledge, the 3DS didn't have any really popular FPS games. None of those games you mentioned were big hits on the DS. This could be attributed to many reasons, such as console versions of the games being better or having better online play, which is probably also true. I am pretty sure their crude control schemes had something to do with it.

I don't want the gaming on smartphones to be the standard, but it might happen. I live in NYC where just a few years ago most people used PSP's to play games while riding the train. Now everyone is using smartphones and the ipod touch and not much of anything else. I hope the 3DS and Sony's Vita can convince people that you are right.

@decoy1978 Actually no on that psx part.Sony was originally the ones working on a cd based system for Nintendo.Sony had some issues with the management at the time and left, taking the the development they had already done with them. From there they created the PSX(or playstation). But no it was completely Sony's own design.Kinda like a how game gets published but isn't made by the publisher, same deal cept Sony broke off and took their work with them.

I want some news about the PS Vita version of Portable 3rd... But this does look good. I hope the Vita has comparable content. I do wonder how the swimming controls would work, as Tri used the camera controls to swim up or down, and this can't be as simple considering the already-complex d-pad camera.

@moviequest14 Im no fanboy, i go where my games go.But i also know the situation Monster Hunter itself is going through, which i doubt you do.The wii edition(Tri) was nothing more than an experiment. The fact the DS G edition has more content is enough proof of that. But it was known before. So before you go around pointing fingers and proclaiming "fanboy" like some child, know what you are talking about.

@moviequest14 Allow me to get some facts straight for you kid. I have owned nearly every system in existence and im not joking.I have owned nearly every older nintendo product(or system) cept when it came to the wii, i didn't own that for long.I also didn't buy every dam DS edition. Why?Because i know its profiteering.I know im being ripped off by buying the first product.Nintendo is very notorious for this. But its profits can only come from gaming so i understand to a point. Observing what people complained about the psp as well as what is considered the norm for controllers today would tell Nintendo what would be the way to go.But Nintendo also has a history of improving slowly on anything hardware wise. Now they have the habit of selling by gimmick. Anyway the 3DS should of had a second analog in the first place simply from observation of the current gaming style. Its simply good business sense to appeal to the gaming community. Also its bad lineup, its terrible first 6 month sales, and the constant delays/cancellations is what brought about the price drop.Complaining had nothing to do with it.

The thing looks bonkers, Big N should have let it ride out the holiday season before pulling this thing out. Now how can they expect anyone to buy the 3ds when EVERYONE knows the "lite" will come out with the slide pad built in? If I didn't already own a 3DS I would certainly wait for the next iteration now.

I dont think its a bad idea i think it could improve gameplay and even better allow for more types of games. ya it could have been included earlier but i doubt it will be that expensive maybe 20-30$ so people shut up about how "bad" an idea this is as long as it allows for more games and capabilities then i can care less

The peripheral is made by Capcom anyways. Would you rather pay 200 dollars for a new system with the second analog pad or a 50 dollars or less optional second pad?

Another thing to consider: this add-on is contained within a rather large case, which I'm betting has plenty of free space inside. I'd put my money on Nintendo offering a version with a battery pack contained within to extend the slightly lacking battery life of the standard 3DS.

Moviequest14, I like the cut of your jibb. This doesn't bother me in the least, I don't remember everyone slamming the DS when the Guitar Hero game came out with that big, clunky fret-buttons set up. This thing merely enables the Monster Hunter game to be played in the way Capcom wants it to be, plain and simple. There's a lot of Sony fans gleeing over this as some sort of epic fail that's going to allow the Vita to come out and dominate and I'd just say I'm pretty guarded on that front. The PSP was a superior piece of hardware to the DS in every configuration yet the DS mopped the floor with it. The It's too early to judge the 3ds a failure after 6 months, and the Vita has yet to sell a single unit so get a grip on yourselves. I've said it before, don't think for a second the absolutely horrific economy isn't playing into this and somehow I don't see it as improving a great deal by Christmas so it's going to be a sales challenge for both systems.I really hope the Vita is all that for all the rabid Sony fans out there. There's no rule to say I can't get a Vita if it comes out with something I really want to play, the systems aren't matter/anti-matter, they won't explode in proximity.

I will wait at least two years before I buy the 3DS or the Vita. iOS and Android games are changing the portable gaming market which could hurt real portable gaming devices. Good luck Sony and Nintendo.

@moviequest14 I totally agree with you. Everyone copies everyone at one point. In fact you hit the nail on the head when you mention its EVOLUTION of gaming. Did Sony copy Nintendo? HELL YEAH, thats quite eviden't with Move and Vita. However, what I didn't agree with you was on a prior point that you made about Sony being "prodded" into the gaming market because it was so successful for Nintendo. Just because one company was successful it doesn't mean that another company can achieve that same success (remember the 3DO?) Sony took Nintendo's ideas and made it into their own.... and did it well for the PSX. A lot of companies do that... even video game developers. You don't have to be unique, you just have to do it better than the rest! And yeah, PSP was a let down! Their launch was GREAT, but they couldn't sustain it.... when I was at Gamestop, the release page for the PSP was 1/2 the size compared to DS. You don't win wars when the other guy has more games coming out throughout the year.... See the similarity?

@ decoy1978 : I agree, and in the way you put it is very correct. I am fine with people pointing out the flaws of Nintendo,3ds,etc. (and they without a doubt do have flaws.) but that isn't what most people are doing, they are instead channeling hate towards Nintendo and negativity no matter what Nintendo does. There wouldn't be nearly as many reasons for me to even post if there were more rational people like you in the (gaming) world.I think atm Nintendo is trying to fix their mistakes (like the obvious push at 3rd party support, aim at better online and graphics, etc.) and instead of supporting that most people are heaping down hate more than ever before waiting to back-slap Nintendo around every corner they make trying to make progress.I think overall this gen both portables will sell very well and vita will be much more successful than psp was.

@ McBoogerballz : First...don't insult me,I honestly don't care what low-brow insults you try to throw in to make a point and it is honestly a waste of type. The fact of the matter is...the 3ds is selling even if it is new it is still selling and that is what counts we could sit here all day and make excuses as to why it is selling but the point is IT IS SELLING. and that is all in response to this > ''Guess what, if 3DS is half as successful as you claim it to be, the price won't drop 30% 6 months after its launch, Nintedo's stock price won't drop by 10.2% in Summer and the CEO won't cut its salary in half.'' You claimed it wasn't selling well, once it is shown that it is selling well you excuse it out by saying that the main reason it sold was because it is new..so what! It is selling and that would mean you would be incorrect..new or not.

@ decoy1978 : If being one of the handful of people that can't help but wonder what is wrong when comments only expressing fact are roasted or when just plain stupid comments like ''Nintendo will crash and burn!..hopefully'' are praised is being a ''fanboy'' then I am proud to be one.But for every 1 time Nintendo copied Sony the reverse happens 5 times...for example...the countless obvious visual similarities between move and wii,the touch screen from ds used in vita,d-pad,shoulder buttons, analog stick, rumble, camera, the list goes on...you could say that those are only minor steps in gaming that is more of an evolution than actual features then that would mean Nintendo actually didn't copy Sony...you must choose either one or the other and neither bode well for sony.64 still did have a fiarly standard amount of 3rd party support with the likes of mega-man,goldeneye,Resident Evil, etc. and one of the big reasons so many developers did branch to Sony was because they were the ''new kid on the block'' and caught their interest. And in regards to launch titles for 3ds...Launches and launch titles for that matter seldom matter over system life...when was the last time a systems most popular game was a launch title? And in example the psp shows that even if a system has a spectacular launch doesn't mean it will emerge as victor of that ''system war'' or even emerge successful.

@cameio While I can understand you believe there is better tech out there your arguments are still pretty poor for why you hate / are disappointed by the 3DS. The battery could be longer and I understand that can be a nuisance but how long are you actually on trains and doing things? Because quite rarely do you NEED to play a game all the time during a trip and it lasts several hours. Graphics is not gameplay and while I respect you may want graphics you should never make yourself look a fool and act like a tech junkie rather than a gamer on a game site (e.g. tech junkies simply want graphics, camera's and all that crap, gamers look to the games). You haven't once mentioned games in your post which is quite a feat for someone buying a games console and complaining about it based on more arbitrary factors to gaming enjoyment. Anyway don't want to sound too rude but you should look at trying to see how the GAME lineup interests you in the future rather than the nerd gasm of tech speccing and graphics drooling. I'm not trying to be a fanboy as at the moment I am not as happy with the graphics as I thought I'd be and I'll admit that as a way of showing I'm trying to not be biased but ultimately it's games games games with systems and so don't run out and buy a vita in 2 days and down the line get the old PSP level of support and piracy (I'm not saying this will happen but it could and people shouldn't be dumb enough to just buy a console rushing in on the graphics).

@moviequest14 At least we can agree on one thing, the 3DS is STILL SELLING! Regardless of all of Nintendo's recent shortcomings, the 3DS is still being moved. Rushed system? YOU BET! But I can see the logic in trying to pad your quarterly statements. For all my disappointments in the 3DS I still believe in it, why? Because its NINTENDO! We may cry, moan, complain, but at the end of the day its Nintendo! We'll get their products regardless because of the brand name. BUT, the name only takes you so far (Square Enix knows that all too well...). Consumers can only take so much before they say enough is enough. The way I see it, Nintendo has still a definite advantage through this year because X-MAS is just around the corner and so far Nintendo has always been triumphant during that period.
