Analyst: Wii U GameStop sales below expectations

Wii U hardware and software sales at GameStop during the holiday season were below expectations, according to an investor note from Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. The industry watcher said Wii U availability at GameStop continues to be "abundant."

No Caption Provided

The Wii U made its worldwide debut November 18 in North America and sold 400,000 units during its first week. The console launched in Europe and Australia on November 30, but no specific sales figures for those regions have been announced. The Wii U's December 8 launch in Japan saw first-weekend sales come in at 308,570 units.

Bhatia also revealed that the $350 Wii U Deluxe model is selling at a greater clip than the $300 basic version at GameStop, presumably due to its "better value." The Deluxe model includes 32GB of storage space to the Basic unit's 8GB, as well as a bundled copy of Nintendo Land.

Additionally, Bhatia said the Wii U software attach rate at GameStop is "low," but did not provide a specific rate.

"Our conclusion is the Nintendo Wii U launch has been slightly disappointing," Bhatia said.

Gamestop? Only got Gametraders and EBGames here.

Never buy much from either anymore either. Online purchasing is cheaper.

High sales do not make a good console and sales alone will not make the Wii-U great. That will be left up to the games that come out for it and how well it is supported in the long run.

The Wii-U still has a long way to go to prove itself, just like any console that is this early in its life span. My biggest disappointment, however, is knowing how underwhelming the hardware specs on the Wii-U are and it's one of the biggest reasons I am not considering a purchase right now (it barely competes with current gen consoles, much less being considered "next gen"). I know some people say hardware performance shouldn't matter, but in a way it does because it limits how far devs can push their games and in some ways even limits innovation. Vast hardware performance differences may also make porting games from other next gen consoles (when they come out) to the Wii-U similarly problematic and may even cause devs to shy away from developing specific big titles for the Wii-U at all. That is, of course, assuming the new Xbox and PS3 will actually have next gen hardware, which may not be the case for all I know.

I'll wait and see how things pan out.

@TenraiSenshi "High sales do not make a good console and sales alone will not make the Wii-U great. That sold a cr@p load but was still a terrible terrible machine. But look at the PS1,2,3 and xbox and gameboy's these were extremely good consoles that sold a truck load. So numbers do in some way decided if it will be a decent console.

What if the numbers remain "under expectation" how many developers do you believe will still be around once the big boys enter the play ground.

@abHS4L88 No, games like new games, like Journey, like LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Gears of Wars, not the 145th Mario game.

What makes you think they aren't? Granted they usually hit their console launches with a few new IPs but with the Wii U, they've decided to take a different approach, instead making the Wii U's launch focus more on 3rd party titles rather than 1st party games. It's already been confirmed that there will be at least 2 new major IPs for the Wii U (one by Miyamoto and the other by Monolith Soft), we'll have to wait and see.

I don't recall any of those games being present at launch though, that's the difference. When the PS3/360 first came out, both had ports from the PS2.

Developers are not going to suddenly pour out resources to make new IPs for a brand new console, best to use their existing games to test the waters. Ubisoft and Platinum are the only two right now who made new IPs for the Wii U, ZombiU and The Wonderful 101. Nintendo is also currently working on some new IPs and (hopefully) will be revealed at this coming E3.

One thing to remember with all new consoles is that launch titles hardly reflect the overall quality and strength of a system. It usually takes at least a year for really strong titles to come out.

@abHS4L88 So far for all those games they were released on the actual generation. Look at the Wii U, with the Batman and Darksiders port Nintendo think "hardcore gamer" will buy it, but that's not the case. They really should make new IP to attract them, because they know that Sony and Microsoft could make the difference in a few months. I don't hate Nintendo, my girlfriend has a 3DS and there are some good games but for me they really should make new IP to attract them, because they know that Sony and Microsoft could make the difference in a few months.

Is that why new IPs tend to struggle? Also why every major Mario game always sells extremely well?

Also just to put things into clear perspective, there have been less than 30 Super Mario titles, 2 of them you don't even play as Mario and how long has Mario been around?

3 of the 4 games you listed all have sequels too so if "gamers like new games" then why bother with sequels?

It's interesting to me that people argue that Nintendo has gone the route of "innovation over power" when their big innovation this time around is to make a controller that allows you to control games through a touch-screen...kinda like using the PS Vita for Remote Play or Remote Control for the PS3. When Nintendo's big leap is an already existing (though under utilized) Sony feature, I don't think they can claim the innovation excuse anymore. Be honest. Nintendo has decided it is more cost effective to make a nearly outdated console each generation with some new gimmick to draw people in than to try to compete in the power category. There is nothing wrong with this approach, it just isn't going to appeal as much to core gamers. Nintendo is obviously aware of this as they focus most of their efforts on non-core games. I feel that it is unfair to attempt to compare Nintendo's products with Sony and Microsoft's at this time as Nintendo isn't trying to directly compete. Is the WiiU a good general gaming system? Yes. Is it the big new thing that's going to kick Sony and Microsoft to the curb? No. Deal with it.

Uh, you do realize that feature for the Vita wasn't revealed until AFTER the Wii U was unveiled at E3 2011 right? If you want more proof look at how quickly Microsoft responded to the dual screen idea with Smart Glass.

Also the idea of the Wii U is much more than what the Vita/PS3 combo is capable of, plus the fact that it's one complete unit means it'll be utilized much more than the Vita's cross play/cross control features.

Actually, this is always been the way Nintendo has operated, take existing technology and find new ways to use it in gaming, which resulted in nearly every console they created (and we ended up with the controller we have today because of it) because even before they entered the gaming market, they recognized that relying on cutting edge technology was a sure fire way to lose a ton of money and/or go bankrupt. Look at Atari and SEGA, both first started out making great but not powerful consoles but focused on the games, then later on got desperate and started relying on cutting edge tech to remain relevant, look what happened to both of them. Even Sony, both Playstations were only cutting edge in the format they used, but not in the overall power of the system, both were massive successes in reception and financially, but then they decided to make the PS3 a cutting edge beast and look what happened, granted it later became a critical success yet still remains as one of the biggest (if not the biggest) financial flops Sony has suffered.

It's an amazing system, but I do think if Sony and Microsoft stuck with the progression that the industry has been following ever since the beginning, the industry would be in a better shape than it is today, with less studios closing down, more variety, and Sony being financially stable. Because both made very costly systems, especially Sony, there was no way they could release a successor until at least 8 years later despite how much technology has progressed since then. I mean, it took developers a while to master 720p so I don't know why Sony/Microsoft couldn't have just stuck with say 540 or 680p then upgraded to 720/1080p 5 years later? It would've been much more cost effective and we'd still have some pretty amazing looking games.

Well, what's done is done and at least Sony managed to make the PS3 a critical hit, even though my brother owns one (doo doo won't let me play it), I want to get my own because there are several exclusives on it that I really want to play.

I will wait for the price to drop and for it to come with a real hard drive.

The 320GB I added to my PS3 is pretty much full from games and I have a 1TB hard drive in my PC full of only games from Steam. I am going to need more than 32GB, which is a joke.

I want to like the system but they just do so many things to keep us away.

@Shadowmax889 @Toysoldier34 External Hard drives are slow. You could save stuff onto then but you can't run games using it. Similar to how the original Wii works, I have a 32GB SD card in it and have many games on it because the stock hard drive was full. When I go to play a game it needs to copy the game from the SD card back over the the system so it can actually run it.

Not as big an issue when playing smaller games at 480p, but with the Wii-U it will have downloadable games on par with the PS3 and 360 which often run over a GB in size which would take even longer to load. It isn't an ideal way to handle things.

Parents were probably confused seeing that it had the Wii name and got their kids the original Wii for Christmas instead thinking it might have been the better version or whatever they were thinking at the time.

@Albaficas

Yeah and if you've been reading those rumors about the "Omni" it's also stated that it's not going to be much more powerful than the Wii U, so your "TRUE next gen" will barely be more powerful than the current gen? Wow, some next gen that is >.>

Also "below expectations" does NOT equal failure and GameStop said "slightly disappointing." If the Wii U's launch is a failure, then the Vita and PS3's launches should be considered massive failures.

it is to be expected. it was introduced at the wrong time, just like the vita. the console is good but the people just aren't interested what with other devices like the iphone and ipad. admit it, the average consumer would place the wii u at the end of their wishlist :(

Actually GameSpot (or was it IGN?) ran an article showing the Christmas wishlist of most children in the US and the Wii U was 2nd on the list after the iPhone 5 (or was it iPad 3?).

@dasherzz The systems are alright especially the Vita. The problem is video game systems need games. There are a few good titles but not near enough for anyone to sink hundreds of dollars into playing.

I want to play Uncharted Golden Abyss but until there are much more worthwhile games I can't justify a system purchase for a small selection of games.
