Battlefield 3 not coming to Steam

Electronic Arts' long list of digital retail partners leaves off Valve's online distribution hub.

Last month, rumor had it that DICE's upcoming modern-day shooter Battlefield 3 would skip Valve's digital distribution outlet Steam altogether. Now, publisher Electronic Arts has confirmed that speculation.

Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.
Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.

The list of global digital retail partners for Battlefield 3 is extensive, but it does not include Steam--the digital distribution juggernaut with over 30 million users. As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

Battlefield 3 skipping Steam is not an entirely wild scenario. EA recently opened its own digital distribution shop--Origin--and has tussled with Steam lately, pulling Dragon Age II, Crysis 2, and others from Steam.

For more on Battlefield 3, which is due out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on October 25, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

*shrug* If you're gonna open up a store, brick or digital, you gotta stock it with your best stuff. Of course EA would want to keep BF3 to themselves.

A bad move indeed. With this attitude BF3 might not beat MW3 like many people including myself are hoping for. You can bet that MW3 will still be on steam so BF3 is losing 30 million potential customers to their rival. This is a bad move for everyone, well except maybe Activision.

My final points on this. Does Origin have a feature such as SteamGuard so that no one can access my account unless it is from my computer? Does Origin have social features on par with Steam or other services? Does Ubi or any of the other companies using similar launchers fail to utilize Steam? Does Origin auto-update all my games where it is available (many EA games have this capability)? Does Origin keep nearly all my DD purchases regardless of the publisher linked to one account? The answer to every one of those is "NO", which is why Origin is useless as anything other than a DD platform. It doesn't even function as DRM. So why would I voluntarily chose to use the service? I wont, and if they force me into it, in the future I might not buy their games.

We all knew it wasn't coming to Steam, EA wasn't fooling anyone but themselves by slowly removing games from Steam. I for one will not buy this game, i just hope rdr goty is coming for PC and im saving money for that.

Its a good chance to force Origin and online passess to ppl with a expected game like BF3.It may make Origin stronger, but it will anger many Steam using gamers,Im sure.

@Landsharkk EA doesn't care at all about beating MW3. That rivalry is only at a player level, the company is only worried about money and could not care less which game is dubbed "the master of the genre".

@pedram Are those companies with similar launchers (such as Ubi) actively withholding games from Steam? The answer is no. If EA wants to play hardball with their new platform, it had better be on par or better than the current offerings on the market. Not obviously inferior no matter what angle you look at it.

They'll put it on Steam, with a special edition no less. Players do not circumvent EA's multiplayer services by buying the game through Steam. Like the MMOs and other games with patchers on Steam, you'll still be routed through BF3's own patcher and update services - not relying on Steam whatsoever. You'll still log into EA's services to play.

@DemonChorro You won't buy BF3 brand new from Origin because Steam has awesome super sales? You do realize these sales come from the publisher's, not the Steam service itself. It would be the same price whether it's on Steam or Origin. Besides, the actual interface of Origin is very similar to Steam, so there isn't much of a learning curve. I'm a big fan of the Battlefield series, I don't care how they deliver the game to me, just as long as I get it.

EA is just hoping for a jump start to their Origin app/service. I'm sure they believe that hype from BF3 will be enough to draw a huge crowd of customers to Origin, most of whom will have never even heard of Origin. New customers means more money and more support for Origin. Still, I think this is a BIG risk for a title that is attempting to top MW3 in sales.

@theshonen If they aren't trying to directly compete, then why is EA pulling games from Steam? EA is obviously trying to compete with Steam or they wouldn't be forcing people to use the damn service. What is boils down to is that EA wants to take some of the DD business from Valve, but is unwilling to put the money into developing Origin to be on par with Steam in terms of features (it is nothing buy a reskin of the EADM). So they are doing an end-run around fair competition by not making it available on Steam. It will bite them in the a**, so it doesn't really matter.

@mr_gibberish They are not ripping off Valve. Origin is a publisher download service just like Blizzard's download service and Ubisoft's download service. It's just a way for them to sell you their games directly so that the developers can get more money rather than have to pay for Steam or Amazon to list it. EA isn't copying Valve because Origin doesn't sell other publishers games like Steam does. Steam's real competitors are GameStop's Impulse, Direct2Drive, and Amazon Digital. Origin has no part in this rivalry.

I wasn't going to buy it until a price drop anyway ($30 maximum), but the stupidity on the part of EA is really mind boggling. Regardless of what they say, they WILL lose sales, that is a given. Anyway, here is what it boils down to for me. Steam auto-patches and auto-applies all DLC and patches when they become available. I don't have to create accounts, I don't have to sift through adds and web pages. I start Steam, it downloads any updates and I play my games. Until Origin does that, I wont touch it unless I am absolutely forced to. I already get enough spam and ads from other sources.

@Majkic666 I actually purchased it through Origin. They had a sale recently where BF2, BF 2142, Mirror's Edge and a bunch of other stuff was $5. I already had those games physically but I bought them again since they were so cheap so I wouldn't have to bust out the old DVDs all the time.

@SuperYeti22 5. What is you basis for this? I don't understand. Have you even used the program? You don't have to have Origin running to play your games, you can download them and exit Origin and play. That sounds much better than Steam forcing you to log in at all times. Then if you love Steam's UI, you can just add the game to Steam and run it through there. It's be just like if you bought it on Steam. I need to emphasize again, ORIGIN AND STEAM ARE NOT THE SAME THING. There's is absolutely no reason I can't have both Origin AND Steam at the same time, and that's exactly what I have now. Origin gives me to way to download my EA games that I've bought physically. Steam lets me digitally buy anything else. There's no competition here. If you really want to hate on competition, go boycott GameStop's Impulse or Direct2Drive, but Origin is not a competitor.

@SuperYeti22 1. But WHY does Origin suck? I've used it and it's a great, easy way to download games. You keep comparing it to Steam but they aren't even equivalent services, Steam is a digital distribution service for almost ALL publishers and competes directly with Impulse or Direct2Drive. EA Origin only offers EA games and lets you download games digitally for you physical copies also. You can buy a physical game, copy and paste the serial number into Origin and start downloading wherever you want. It's equivalent to Blizzard's downloader or Ubisoft's downloader, it's a publisher specific program. 2. The downloader takes 2 minutes to download and have up and running. It's really painless. 3. With games like Battlefield Bad Company 2 you ALREADY have to add friends through EA's account system. You have to do this with EVERY NON VALVE GAME ON STEAM. The fact that Origin provides a friend's list is if anything easier. 4. You can always opt out the emails and you always need to sign up for a publsher's email with every non-Steam game. Try playing Assassin's Creed II or any Games for Windows Live game if you don't understand.

@Entropy730: I HAVE used Origin/EA Downloader and I CAN tell you that it is nothing more than EA Downloader with a mask on. I can also tell you that it is nothing like smooth or painless. I have had countless problems with registering CD keys, problems with games refusing to authenticate, and connection drops. That, and given my recent problems with BF2 connectivity lately, namely constantly dropping out of games and, finally, the theft of my CD key, I think I'll just skip BF3 altogether. Not that I'll be going to Modern Warfail 3 instead.

EA are terrible! First they try to sue Valve over Steam because Steam was trying to bring back those bed room gamer developers which were starting to disappear thanks to big publishing companies. Then EA rip of Steam with Origins putting their big games first in the list which will once again help to kill off the games industry. EA are so damn greedy and soul destroying for any company trying to break through. Long live Valve and what it has done to boost the vid game growth!!

@majkik666 that's actually false. origin is not ea downloader... i've downloaded and installed bad company 2 and bad company 2 vietnam on origin within 15 minutes. i also got to play the BF3 alpha last weekend. that required to be installed onto origin. it took 5 minutes and then it let me know when the install was complete. completely painless and easy. if you're equating origin as "ea downloader with a mask on" then you're a liar because you havent even used origin yet but you're assuming what it is. if you're this nitpicky about a friggen website you download the game from then im glad i wont be playing with you online. why ppl complain about origin is beyond me. 1 you havent even used it to see how smooth it is for yourself. 2 it IS steam. only difference is its owner is ea, not valve, and the colors are white and orange instead of black. WOW IM NOT GETTING THE GAME ANYMORE CUZ OF THIS. QQ more

God, I already don't like EA, this is just making it worse. We have to suffer b/c they can't play nice together. And just a word to EA, I will never, ever, get Origin, so if that's the plan, give up, put your games on steam and let us THE CONSUMERS get the content we want by the means we want.

@drummerdickens People are really criticizing EA for Origin just because they feel Steam is being threatened when that's not the case at all. Steam is awesome but it's in no way competing with Origin, as both may be download services but they will be offering completely different games. I see no reason why I can't have both Steam AND Origin running on my computer at once. People have also been criticizing Origin as bad software but I don't understand that argument at all, downloading with the client is easy and painless and Origin doesn't require you to have the program running at all times when you want to play a game like Steam does. I love Steam but you guys really need to stop knee-jerking to kick EA for this. If you want to criticize them, complain about the online pass or lack of mod tools, those are much more horrible actions.

@Entropy730 Because: (NOTE: Reasons 4-6 came from @abompro 's comment) 1) Origin sucks 2) Most of us already have all of our games on Steam, which means a whole lot less hassle. 3) You'll have to recreate your friends list from Steam if you want anyone to join a game with you. 4) EA spams the hell out of you with emails and the like. 5) Steam is majorly efficient, and Origin is not. 6) Origin sucks.

@theshonen8899 you're exactly right. why are people flipping out... it's like if WoW was all of a sudden taken off of Steam and you could only get it on Blizzard's downloader and people go, "AW YA KNOW WHAT THAT'S IT! IM NOT BUYING WOW NOW BECAUSE THEYRE NOT SELLING IT ON A RIVAL COMPANY'S ONLINE DISTRIBUTOR!" like what planet are you idiots from? because valve can't make money off of SOMEONE ELSE'S creation for once you're not buying the game? you guys are idiots i'm glad i won't be playing online with you probably camp, whine, and complain all day..

@Entropy730 In some ways, I can understand the frustration that people have with this. It's the same sort of frustration I feel whenever I go to a news website and I'm forced to register for yet another website when all I want to do is leave a comment on a single article that I've read.In the same way, if you already have Steam and a Steam account, it's a bit of a hassle to download yet another digital distribution program and sign up for another account.

As much as I dislike EA it makes sense for them to do this although trying to compete against the beloved Steam will inevitably be futile especially considering Origin's ridiculous pricing. Like the rest of the world I will be buying this from retail and not online because of how much cheaper I can get it, that and I had awful experiences with EADM.

What choice does EA have?If they allow their most popular games, like Battlefield 3, to be distributed on Steam then what incentive is there for people to use Origin?
