Battlefield 3 not coming to Steam

Electronic Arts' long list of digital retail partners leaves off Valve's online distribution hub.

Last month, rumor had it that DICE's upcoming modern-day shooter Battlefield 3 would skip Valve's digital distribution outlet Steam altogether. Now, publisher Electronic Arts has confirmed that speculation.

Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.
Battlefield 3 won't break into Steam.

The list of global digital retail partners for Battlefield 3 is extensive, but it does not include Steam--the digital distribution juggernaut with over 30 million users. As of press time, EA had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment on the matter.

Battlefield 3 skipping Steam is not an entirely wild scenario. EA recently opened its own digital distribution shop--Origin--and has tussled with Steam lately, pulling Dragon Age II, Crysis 2, and others from Steam.

I guess this is similar to normal retailing distribution practices though. Everyone wants to do it, everyone tries, and only the best ones survive. If that remains true, then there's hope. I don't think EA will ever be the "best one" as long as Steam's around, and BF3, no matter how awesome it is, won't carry Origin.

Great job EA! You proved your worth as a greedy, stupid game publisher. Have a f**king snowcone...

ergh... EA wont be happy until they own everything. So have to run steam for all my games and origin especially for battlefield. If it were any other game I would skip it but battlefield3 no chance

This is a stupid idea. Most of Battlefield 3's fanbase is on Steam. Why would you risk trying to sell your game to an audience of 30 million people just to try and promote your own service? It's ridiculous, just put it on Steam, EA.

Yeah... given the previous EA games didn't have any form of Steam interactivity aside from automatic patching, I seriously don't give a toss. Was going to buy it retail anyway since it would be at least 10 euros cheaper and not redeem into Steam because that hasn't worked on any EA games. But hey. Let's hate on EA for excluding Steam, for a reason we all know is because of Valve's new terms of agreements about DLC, while forgetting that Valve excludes all Digital Distribution nodes for their games. But I guess that's the perk of being first. You can do whatever you want. I like Steam as the rest of you lot, but this is getting ridiculous.

@zzamaro Well, EA doesn't make as much money on Steam games as they do on retail and Origin games because Steam takes a cut of the profits.

With Origin getting launched I just assumed this was a given. It does aggravate me though that all the publishers seem to want to have their own digital distribution client. I won't use multiple clients. They need to all get together and agree on some universal format.

Guess I'm getting the retail version. I refuse to use Origin while it's in the messy state that it is now.

As long as I can completely bypass Origin, whatever. Not happy about it but I'll just get it retail. If Origin is required, then I'm not playing BF3. I will not use that garbage. It's really that simple.

Not going to skip a game as good as Battlefield 3 just because it isn't on Steam, although it is a stupid decision.

Oh, wonderful. Now I bet there's gonna be even LESS people on the PC. The version I'm going to get. I hope I'm not stuck with just a couple hundred people.
