BF3 players to get Battlefield 1943 after all

After reneging on its BF3 bonus offer, EA says players who bought BF3 for the PS3 will get Battlefield 1943 as originally promised.

Battlefield 3 publisher EA has confirmed it will give players who bought Battlefield 3 for the PlayStation 3 a copy of the 2009 PlayStation Network title Battlefield 1943. The confirmation comes after accusations of a bonus bait and switch; in June, PS3 players were promised Battlefield 1943 for free when they bought BF3, but on the day of launch, EA cancelled the deal. The subsequent discontent amounted to the recent filing of a class action lawsuit against EA.

Battlefield 1943 for free, as originally promised.
Battlefield 1943 for free, as originally promised.

Now, EA says there have been "some misunderstandings" around the deal, and to clear those up, it is restoring the original bonus, "making Battlefield 1943 available free of charge to owners of Battlefield 3 on the PS3 beginning this month".

European BF3 players will get a hold of the freebie from November 26, while those in the US will have access from December 10, and those in Asia from December 17.

The PSN freebie doesn't appear to affect the one-week exclusivity window for Battlefield 3 content that was to be offered to PS3 owners as a bonus in place of Battlefield 1943. The class action lawsuit against EA noted the bonus was an unrelated promotion publicly announced significantly in advance of the game's shipping.

To claim your Battlefield 1943 PS3 voucher, see EA's help page on the topic.

@RE2LeonS PSN gave around 10+ Free titles this year and recent 50% discounts. Wanna argue about that? And Sony hardwork in getting all the bonuses such as Assassin Creed, Saints Row 2, BF 1943.. uMad bro??

I love how EA claims it was just "some misunderstandings" instead of admitting what they did was wrong. What they did was very much a bait and switch which i believe falls under false advertising which is illegal. @CapnSparklyPJs: i couldnt care less about either game, it the principal that matters. Just saying who cares when a company does bad business practices is part of the reason these big publishers continue to try and get away with as much as they can.

Good. If I bought the PS3 version of Battlefield because of the promise of a free game, I'd be angry, too. Oh, and a free game is a perfectly fine reason to choose one version of a game over another. And, complaining when you don't get the game you were promised is perfectly justified, too. It's stupid to say it's not.

Who gives? I bought Battlefield 1943 in 2009, yeah sure it's fun but if you own Battlefield 3 why not just play that, 1943 really isn't all that special.

@RE2LeonS Then buy a PS3 if your all hurty hurted about it. Anyway 1943 is pretty fun, nice of EA to come through. I kinda wish DICE would make a full fledged game out of 1943 that would be great.

@davet666 Why would they give something special to peoples like you just because you already bought the game in the past ? You can still get the free copy of Battlefield 1943 anyway so you get the same things as everyone else.

This was mostly about corporate misconduct, not really because most people wanted 1943. Gamers should be doing this more often.

@ Dawg9000 I'm comparing prices to show that games are cheaper today relative to income than they were 20 years ago when everyone complains about them being expensive and companies being greedy. INFLATION is why and you proved my point by saying they are cheaper to produce today. What is your point? Please explain. And yes NEW games are cheaper a week later. I got Red Dead a week after it came out on Amazon for $49. And maybe a week is a bit short, so a few weeks...whatever. Gears 3, a game 2 months old and still in it's first holiday season, is $40 right now. Battlefield 3, only a month old, is $40! NEW. Stop shopping at Gamestop if you think it's only used games. There's this thing called a Google Shopping search. You should try it.

i don't get it, why would you wanna play a 2009 MP game when you can play MW 3 or BF 3 right now?, i mean i would prefer EA giving away games like dead Space 2 or NFS the Run or something like that..lol

@deathstream They didn't need to make any announcement. They just had o change the promotion and give the 1943 copy to those that bought it before the change. I don't think it was a conspiracy. I think is was a completely noobish mistake made by 2 big companies, and they should comply to what they agreed to sell, and share the damage any way they agree between each other. What they could not (and ended not doing, but after exposing themselves to the ridiculous - and some brand damage - is to let the consumer suffer the consequences for their lack of coordination; thankfully, they wold not be able to, consumer laws don't work that way.

Remember when EA almost went out of business because no one would buy their games? Those were the good old days when gamers expected to get what they pay for. Now, EA is back on top and up to their old shenanigans. Boycott EA.

EA should not have done that, but the fact some people went ahead with a class action lawsuit for a 10$ , 2 year old game....wow, where do you people find the time to do stuff like that.

Good to see them honouring the deal. Even if it was never 100% official if they tweeted it from an EA source it is as good as and they should honour it.

@Nodashi EA made their announcement the morning the game releases. VERY few gamers had actually bought the game before they made their announcement. Personally, I suspect that Sony was supposed to announce that the early access promotion was replacing the BF 1943 promotion and somehow it failed to happen. EA is biting the PR bullet to cover for an important partner. The idea that EA plotted this all in advance and intentionally snatched it away at the very last second is silly conspiracy theory thinking. I'm no fan of corporate America, but I just don't buy the conspiracy theory explanation. Someone made a mistake with the early access announcement. My arguments were directed at the conspiracy theorists and the armchair lawyers who don't understand the law and are just making stuff up. Regardless of how we got there, all PS3 BF3ers now get a copy of a game that 99% of them didn't care about anyway.

EA isn't gonna tell the truth because it's simply bad publicity. What's easier for them to say, "Yea we tried to pull a fast one on you guys and would've done it too, if it weren't for those meddling lawsuits" or "Our bad, there was a misunderstanding, here's a copy of 1943, please don't sue me" Anyone defending EA really has to pull their head out of their ass. @Thizzle7xu Two things, the price will only drop after a week for used copies, something completely useless for games that require online passes like BF3. 2, why are you comparing 90's prices to today's pricing? I'm not gonna explain, just ask yourself. Which was cheaper to produce during their times of media dominance, cartridges or discs?

@hasancakir A. Publishers control the finances of developers. It's not developers who would be greedy. B. How are they greedy? Because they charge money for their very awesome products and they aren't free? Games are cheaper than they have ever been in the industry's short history. NES games sold for $50 and SNES games were between $60 and $100 in the early 90's. With inflation, $60 for a game is cheap, and with our myriad of online buying options all you need to do is wait a week and 90% of games drop below $50. Stop whining.

@deathstream They made it right because of the law suit. They tried not to deliver what they offered. I'm ok with them changing the promotion to those that didn't buy the game (so new buyers would get a different bonus). But once people buy it's no longer a promotion, it's an obligation. Yeah, corporate greed on politics is worst (like, say EA supporting that abusive new law (SOPA), AKA internet censorship. But hey, something being worst doesn't mean all other wrong things should not be criticized.

EA is evil, they bended over the lawsuit, not over thousands of complaints from customers, no... over a freaking lawsuit that would cost them money... BOYCOTT EA! By the way, since they change their minds because of the lawsuit and a month passed since the release, I think the class-action lawsuit have still validity...
