BF3 players to get Battlefield 1943 after all

After reneging on its BF3 bonus offer, EA says players who bought BF3 for the PS3 will get Battlefield 1943 as originally promised.

Battlefield 3 publisher EA has confirmed it will give players who bought Battlefield 3 for the PlayStation 3 a copy of the 2009 PlayStation Network title Battlefield 1943. The confirmation comes after accusations of a bonus bait and switch; in June, PS3 players were promised Battlefield 1943 for free when they bought BF3, but on the day of launch, EA cancelled the deal. The subsequent discontent amounted to the recent filing of a class action lawsuit against EA.

Battlefield 1943 for free, as originally promised.
Battlefield 1943 for free, as originally promised.

Now, EA says there have been "some misunderstandings" around the deal, and to clear those up, it is restoring the original bonus, "making Battlefield 1943 available free of charge to owners of Battlefield 3 on the PS3 beginning this month".

European BF3 players will get a hold of the freebie from November 26, while those in the US will have access from December 10, and those in Asia from December 17.

The PSN freebie doesn't appear to affect the one-week exclusivity window for Battlefield 3 content that was to be offered to PS3 owners as a bonus in place of Battlefield 1943. The class action lawsuit against EA noted the bonus was an unrelated promotion publicly announced significantly in advance of the game's shipping.

To claim your Battlefield 1943 PS3 voucher, see EA's help page on the topic.

Wow, if only the people attacking EA here would turn that energy to fighting the corrupting influences of corporate greed on our politics. While they clearly botched their handling of the situation, I don't think that intentional fraud is the likely explanation. It looks to me like there was a miscommunication between Sony and EA. I am guessing that someone was supposed to announce the early access instead of 1943 when that deal was announced and didn't do it. As soon as EA realized that people were still expecting 1943, they made the announcement over Twitter. I know it is fun to demonize corporations, but sometimes a mistake is just a mistake. At least they did make it right, even though it took them a month.

Then I have a question; what if we already have Battlefield 1943, what would we get? (I know it sounds pretty greedy but the developers are quite greedy as well, so why shouldn't I?)

@BryanParksSuper EA wanted to "give" nothing. They made a deal and tried not to fulfill the obligation. You see, once you made a deal, you have to deliver. It's called law. Want it to sound even prettier? It's a law principle, pacta sunt servanda (the pact has to be respected). Sounds like those "kids" are not the ones that need to grow up.

@controlfreak25 PS3 users never made a big deal out of it. They were just a little upset at the beginning for being lied to. Why don't you first think before you talk and end up making yourself look like an ass.

If EA law department didn't see that lawsuit coming, they are REALLY incompetent. If the department responsable for "removing" the advertised promotion was warned by the law department and still tried this pathethic move and STILL tried it (to later undo it when the obvious lawsuit happened), they are REALLY incompetent. It their marketing department made this promotion without asking whoever decides if they could give free 1943 copies, they are REALLY incompetent. Bottom line: Someone has to be fired there.

@ BryanParksSuper EA was never going to give the first DLC Pack (which arrives in a couple of weeks titled "Back to Karkand" to everyone for free. They were and still are; however, going to give it to people who were lucky enough to buy the limited edition of BF3 for free. I think EA is doing the right thing here. Its better for them to just give in and look like good guys to the majority of the community (you know the ones that have no clue that they mentioned the game coming with BF3) than to get a bunch of bad publicity over it. Most people will be pleasantly surprised when they check the store on the 10th and see that they get a free game for buying BF3. I already have the game, but I'm glad that some of my friends who do not, now will.

Looks like the PS3 people can stop crying now, they got what they wanted now. As it is ps3 players always get something exclusive with thier game while 360 gets nothing, but us 360 players learn to deal with it. But god forbid you tell a ps3 player no then something like this happens.

@BryanParksSuper Many people bought the package specifically because it was a package. The fact that they yanked it at the last moment is blatant false advertisement. Letting this sit is just setting the precedent that these corporations can walk all over your rights at their whim. Even though I bought the PC versions I would stand up for peoples rights, and not bow down and agree with some faceless corporation.

Good, glad EA realizes they are morons of the highest caliber while still not admitting they were wrong at all..."misunderstanding.". The nerve of these scumbag corporations makes me pretty irate.

It wasn't necessary but to all you whingers; stop now. Most of you didn't buy 1943 upon release, you clearly weren't that interested in the franchise so why complain about it? They're a big company, so what? This implies if they were a smaller company you'd be more lenient and not care to much, this demonstrates it's not so much the act you refute but rather the fact it's a big company behind it. Madness.

You don't need origin, just an origin account which you will probably already have if you activated your M1911 bonus handgun or online battlelog. I for one am happy that EA actually gives us BF1943 after all. :)

Honestly, the bait and switch is clearly Illegal, and I would totally be mad at this if I had a Ps3 but I don't. But people shouldn't care much anyways. It's not that fantastic of a game anyways, especially if you've played only the newer games. I remember back in the day, when you bought a game JUST TO HAVE THE GAME. No need for extras or preorder bonuses... One was just happy to get the game you get. And games were FULL and FINISHED not missing things that needed patching. Or has some Crappy AESTHETIC DLC that is on the disc already. They wonder why Triple A games are in trouble...Often you don't get what you pay for.

"Now, EA says there have been "some misunderstandings" around the deal" Correct EA, there have. You misunderstood that you thought you could increase desire for your game by agreeing to throw in something you did not intend to include, then get away with it without getting sued. Yep, that is certainly some misunderstandings. They'd have been better releasing this statement "My bad!"
