BioShock creator Irrational Games is shutting down

Irrational Games cofounder Ken Levine confirms all but about 15 people will lose their jobs as he starts up a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" endeavor for Take-Two.

Irrational Games, creator of the BioShock series, is effectively shutting down. Cofounder Ken Levine revealed the news in an update on the developer's website today. The industry veteran will start a new endeavor for Irrational Games owner Take-Two Interactive, while all but around 15 staffers will be out of a job. It is unclear how many people Irrational Games employed at its Quincy, Mass. office.

"I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it," Levine said. "I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."

To that end, Irrational Games will offer "financial support" to employees affected by the move, as well as the possibility to meet with other Take-Two studios to discuss future employment. Irrational Games will also host a recruiting day where third-party studios and publishers can meet with outgoing Irrational Games developers.

Levine's new project will be announced "in time," he said. The goal for the new endeavor will be to "make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable." Whatever form this new project ends up taking, it will be digitally delivered, he added.

"Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I've ever had. While I’m deeply proud of what we've accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we've done before," Levine said. "To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience."

"When I first contemplated what I wanted to do, it became very clear to me that we were going to need a long period of design. Initially, I thought the only way to build this venture was with a classical startup model, a risk I was prepared to take," he added. "But when I talked to Take-Two about the idea, they convinced me that there was no better place to pursue this new chapter than within their walls. After all, they’re the ones who believed in and supported BioShock in the first place."

Levine's last BioShock-related project is the two-part BioShock Infinite Burial at Sea campaign. The first episode arrived in November, while the second debuts on March 25. It is unclear what this announcement means for the future of BioShock for the PlayStation Vita. We've reached out to Irrational Games and Take-Two for comment.

The entire BioShock universe is now in 2K's hands, Levine said, though no new installments have been announced beyond BioShock Infinite and BioShock for PS Vita.

"I'm handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative," Levine said. "If we're lucky, we'll build something half as memorable as BioShock."

Funny...

I always posted comments saying how bad Infinite is, since launch day, and I almost got stoned by countless jerks.

Now everybody thinks Infinite is bad.

Really funny.

I guess this means BioShock with that distinct Irrational feel is now at an end. That's good news to me. The game worlds have always attracted me, despite their linear nature, but the overall feel of the games never quite sit right with me. BioShock always seemed to me to make points it had no reason to make, culminating in endings that always left an unpleasant aftertaste.

I hope no talent goes to waste in the restructuring and all the good devs find a new place. Levine's new project is too distant in the future for me to care, but I do hope Take-Two's new team for BioShock will take a more subtle approach to themes. Let the game world speak for itself, whatever that may, instead of cramming in a predetermined message even after the bulk of the game screams against it.

I hope they all find new jobs (the ones losing them, obviously). I think Irrational only released about 7 games in their existence.

Meh.

I didn't care that much about the bioshock series. It was cool, but there are so many more FPS games out for that generation. I didn't feel as if Bioshock did enough to make me care more about it than the others.

You're right. It just didn't have the innovation of Call Of Duty.

Maybe if it had more dogs and fish.

This is a real shame. I get a bit uneasy when I read they will be making a "smaller, entrepreneurial project" that will have "replayable narrative" and be digitially delivered. That sounds an awful lot like a freemium game to me... I really hope I'm wrong.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I get the opposite feeling. Trying new things is the best way to break stagnation. And breaking routine is not easy. I genuinely don't see how 'small' 'replayable narrative' and 'digital delivery' have anything to do with freemium. You must be around Steam too much if that's what you think.

As someone who loved and has played the Bioshock series so many times i have lost count, bought ALL the DLC (including Minerva which frankly was better than the main story of Bioshock II) I have to say when it comes to infinite..it sucked. Sorry but it did.

The STORY was incredible, but if I just wanted a story I'd read a book. the combat was just awful, its was incredibly bad. they fell for the halo 2 gun rule, they crippled it even wore by having such a low bullet count that even my twinkie eating behind could carry more magnum rounds than the big bad hero, and not only did they shoehorn the plasmids in a game where they made NO sense but they broke them as well, by giving them such an extreme bullet drop that you might as well just punch the guy.

So maybe he'll do something better but its a shame he went out on what I'd consider a low note. Bioshock I? 9.5, maybe even 10 out of 10. Bioshock II? A 7 out of 10, with Minerva a good 8.5, Bioshock infinite? A 5 out of 10 at best, the story was good but it just wasn't a fun game to play.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I couldn't disagree more with several contentions in your post.

First I believe Bioshock Infinite's story is an object lesson in how to do a gaming-based story. Story delivered via the gaming medium is NOT the same as story delivered via the book or the movie or the TV medium. The interesting thing about Bioshock's story is that it integrates within the gameplay itself. For example, when you die, you are often treated to a 'flashback' in which the Lucerne twins bang on the door. Only later do you realize that, in fact, this is NOT a flashback but rather represents an alternative Booker in an alternate dimension who makes slightly different decisions in such a way as to avoid death.

Second, I don't understand why the Halo 2 gun rule is bad. I find limitation forces you to make choices and making choices is always more interesting to me than not making choices.

Third, I never found the bullet count low. In fact, I believe a low bullet count is more interesting than a high bullet count. It tends to increase difficulty and Bioshock Infinite's difficulty certainly could have done with increasing.

I do not belive B:I's gameplay is all that great, but I am genuinely puzzled by those who suggest that Bioshock Infinite's gameplay is markedly inferior to Bioshock 1's gameplay. They are different to be sure, but the differences are exceedingly minor. They are much more alike than they are different. Can you elucidate the differences? Are you sure it's not simply a case of 'more of the same is not good enough' ?

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The shooting aspect in both games is mostly identical, but the original game had way more depth; different ammo types, more weapons, more plasmids, more gene tonics to fool around with. Enemy variety was larger too, which tied in nicely with the different ammo types. There were more chances to play around with the environments during combat too.

As for the weapon limit forcing choice, my issue is that the choice wasn't much of a choice, the best weapons were so much better than the rest that there was barely any point in thinking about your load.

The game was also piss easy, which made combat just not that interesting to me. Not that Bioshock 1 was that hard either, but it was a bit more challenging (plus I could turn off the vita chambers and force myself to not be reckless).

Infinite's storytelling methods are very good no doubt, for me however the story itself actually sucked, so it was all kinda lost in me. Considering story is the most important thing in games for me, that was the biggest reason for me to just not like the game.

2 cents and all that, etc.

Enemy variety was definitely an issue in Bioshock Infinite. But I felt that environmental factors were just as shoe-horned in 1 & 2 as in Infinite. In the vast majority of cases it is simply easier and better to kill in a straight-forward manner.

Obviously I disagree that the story itself sucked. I've found, without exception, that those who say such a thing didn't actually even understand the story to begin with. A difficult-to-understand story may be a negative for some, but not to me.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The drop physics on the plasmids, which themselves simply weren't enjoyable to use, honestly broke the game for me. as soon as the second DLC comes out and I've played it I'll be uninstalling infinite, whereas Bioshock I and II will ALWAYS have a place on my hard drive.

At the end of the day? It just wasn't fun, a great story doesn't help if the core gameplay is bad which it was. Tell me how many of the plasmids did you REALY use? 1 ore 2 max, right? How many of the guns? Most players I talked to only used the hook and the cannon or RPG, the rest might as well have not existed. Most of it just wasn't fun. I'm glad you liked it but I'd take Minerva's Den or Bioshock I, even Bioshock II (although I hated the way Lamb prattled on all through the game) but for me Infinite was strictly a "1 and done". I have ZERO desire to play it again.

I hardly ever used the cannon or RPG. How did these people have enough ammo to only use one or two weapons? Were they playing on easy or what?

Makes me wonder if the PS4 and XB1 are going to be worth it if it means AAA studios like this one will be shutting down even if they make fantastic games. This sort of trend can't continue.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I was thinking about this long before the new generation of consoles were out - just how expensive it is to develop a game, never mind the marketing side of things.

The whole industry is changing and smaller development teams and smaller games seem to be making lots of money - the returns are huge if done right and Levine is probably just another one of those people who want to jump on that bandwagon and take a slice of the cake at a fraction of the cost - if the project goes tits up, it's not such a massive financial loss and he would take the hit and move onto something else.

But yeah, even a massive franchise like Bioshock runs out of steam eventually and especially if it starts to slip from great to mediocre - that's when the crowds go off to find something else to play and that's when studios start to burn up money at an alarming rate - ergo, it closes.

Expect more of the same this year to some equally big name studios.

To your point however, these AAA games are becoming so expensive to make that games like this and Tomb Raider needed to sell 7MM to be considered a success according to the publishers. For this generation, you know it's going to cost even more. It is a bad trend indeed.

Gone was the hiding in the rafters and listening to the splicers ramble, gone was the hacking turrets and machines to work for you (they had it but it lasted for a few minutes at best) and gone was the excellent plasmids, replaced by pale imitations.

I would take Bioshock II a thousands times over Infinite, Minerva's den was even better, but Infinite was just a heavy handed story about racism with bad combat. Heck I didn't even bother with a lot of the weapon level ups because they just weren't fun to shoot, I didn't even feel that way about the Wrench in Bioshock.

I know the hate affair will follow, however as such a fan of both Bioshock 1 & 2, Infinite was bad. It was also a huge disappointment financially only selling 3MM copies across three platforms. This all the while it was reported the game took 100MM to make and market.

The story was convoluted and did not capitalize on the potential explorations of other key characters in it's presentation. It also lacked the sense of strategy so integral to the fan fair the first two received - as it relates to gameplay.

Kevin's loopy creative process for this title I believe is ironically captured in the end-game credits. Here there's footage of him working with a pair who wrote and performed songs for the game. At the time, Kevin must of thought that this would be so intriguing and appreciated to the viewer, meanwhile it just capsulizes the off-target focus he had while making the game.

I think Kevin realized this after the game's disappointment and wanted to reboot. With that said, this is such a drastic change in response. On the flip side, Take Two is a smart and in touch company. I think they will find a good developer for future titles. Hopefully they find one that can better present the characters, while refocusing on the strategic aspects. We'll just have to see

On a serious note this really hard news to take in, loved the Bioshock series and it sucks that so many people that I remember seeing in the Dev diaries will be out of work soon. Is this the state of modern games? Either you through your allegiance with a big Corp like EA or Activision or go indie and mobile?
