BioShock creator Irrational Games is shutting down

Irrational Games cofounder Ken Levine confirms all but about 15 people will lose their jobs as he starts up a "smaller, more entrepreneurial" endeavor for Take-Two.

Irrational Games, creator of the BioShock series, is effectively shutting down. Cofounder Ken Levine revealed the news in an update on the developer's website today. The industry veteran will start a new endeavor for Irrational Games owner Take-Two Interactive, while all but around 15 staffers will be out of a job. It is unclear how many people Irrational Games employed at its Quincy, Mass. office.

"I am winding down Irrational Games as you know it," Levine said. "I’ll be starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor at Take-Two. That is going to mean parting ways with all but about fifteen members of the Irrational team. There’s no great way to lay people off, and our first concern is to make sure that the people who are leaving have as much support as we can give them during this transition."

To that end, Irrational Games will offer "financial support" to employees affected by the move, as well as the possibility to meet with other Take-Two studios to discuss future employment. Irrational Games will also host a recruiting day where third-party studios and publishers can meet with outgoing Irrational Games developers.

Levine's new project will be announced "in time," he said. The goal for the new endeavor will be to "make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable." Whatever form this new project ends up taking, it will be digitally delivered, he added.

"Seventeen years is a long time to do any job, even the best one. And working with the incredible team at Irrational Games is indeed the best job I've ever had. While I’m deeply proud of what we've accomplished together, my passion has turned to making a different kind of game than we've done before," Levine said. "To meet the challenge ahead, I need to refocus my energy on a smaller team with a flatter structure and a more direct relationship with gamers. In many ways, it will be a return to how we started: a small team making games for the core gaming audience."

"When I first contemplated what I wanted to do, it became very clear to me that we were going to need a long period of design. Initially, I thought the only way to build this venture was with a classical startup model, a risk I was prepared to take," he added. "But when I talked to Take-Two about the idea, they convinced me that there was no better place to pursue this new chapter than within their walls. After all, they’re the ones who believed in and supported BioShock in the first place."

Levine's last BioShock-related project is the two-part BioShock Infinite Burial at Sea campaign. The first episode arrived in November, while the second debuts on March 25. It is unclear what this announcement means for the future of BioShock for the PlayStation Vita. We've reached out to Irrational Games and Take-Two for comment.

The entire BioShock universe is now in 2K's hands, Levine said, though no new installments have been announced beyond BioShock Infinite and BioShock for PS Vita.

"I'm handing the reins of our creation, the BioShock universe, to 2K so our new venture can focus entirely on replayable narrative," Levine said. "If we're lucky, we'll build something half as memorable as BioShock."

Pretty sad. I loved the Original Bioshock and Infinite blew me away a lot more than LoU. I love how the Worlds of Columbia and Rapture were so detailed with depth. They had their own laws, beliefs, ethics, artistic vibe, and perception of humanity. It was a really great experience.

My thoughts are with the talented people that are now leaving Irrational Games, may they soon find fulfilling and rewarding employment in the industry as they are some of the most talented and passionate developers in the business. Here is to their future success and here is to Mr.Levine who I am sure will continue making great games and deliver us unique experiences in this medium we all enjoy so much.

To all of them, the best of luck...

damnit.. i knew it would end with Infinite, figures the last one made would be the shittiest out of the 3.. better hang on to the original those who got a copy cause thats the best one we're ever gonna get, such a shame cause they could have done so much with this series had they stuck to the original play style and not fuked it all up.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Infinite is great, not as good as the original but still it's an incredible game, if only people stop with the hipster nonsense and looked at the game objectively, and more importantly looked at the first Bioshock objectively they would realize that, despite it's flaws, it was still amazing...

I'm glad, but not because they're shutting down. Ken Levine is a TRUE artist. He told his story with Bioshock Infinite, so he's off to do another.

Go ahead, call the game bad - I am. The quantum uncertainty and many-worlds scenarios Levine tacked on to what was otherwise a boring and mundane story only served to put lipstick on a pig. The first Bioshock was brilliant, but this clap-trap of a game was nothing more than a trumped up excuse to let the main character commit patricide, which I found ridiculous, not to mention abhorrent. Here's hoping Levine regains his muse in the mobile game, candy crush knock-off alternative he seems to aspire to.

@ssvegeta555 @Fartman7998 @dmdavenport @fredyellowone Because something as complex as quantum mechanics would take any less than a hundred years to master. *sarcasm

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Bioshock Infinite is the Inception of video games, it makes people feel smart and superior for getting it, even though there isn't that much to get. That's kind of cool in its own right, but obnoxious when people start acting like quantum theory is a subject that's never been broached in science fiction before and gleefully overlook the basic faults in its story because of the way it came together in the end. I am in no way calling the game bad, but it failed thematically because it didn't say anything interesting about its themes. The gameplay was also kinda boring in comparison to the original. Plasmids weren't as fun to use and felt completely out of place. It just didn't measure up to the original in terms of story or gameplay. Also, telling him to not play games with quantum theory is ridiculous because, 1.) the quantum theory in bioshock was kind of the big reveal, it's not something he could've known about going into it, and 2.) it's ridiculous to suggest that anything should be beyond criticism. He may not have been eloquent or specific in his criticism. He may not have even put together a valid opinion, but I take issue with people telling others not to criticize for the simple fact that they disagree.

Its the curse of internet cynicism. Symptoms: you cna never be positive about anything actually positive. You can only delight in things that are negative. Everything is bad if it's on a system you don't own. Anything isn't a game if you didn't like it.

Thanks for the memories of the first Bioshock (not a fan of Infinte but that's irrelevant), it certainly was a talented team. I do hope everyone in the studio finds a new job sooner rather than later, they really shouldn't have a problem finding somewhere else to work given their previous efforts.

Looking forward to his new project too, I like the idea of it being a smaller team.
