Blizzard: Next MMORPG 'brand new' IP

Forum post from publisher reveals next massively multiplayer project will not be based on any existing franchises.

Rumors of a "World of Starcraft" were jettisoned this week when a Blizzard Entertainment representative revealed that the company's next MMOG will be based on an entirely new franchise. When it is finally released, the new, mystery-shrouded game will end the company's 11-year elaboration of its three mainstay franchises: Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo.

No Caption Provided

On Tuesday, Blizzard rep "Zarhym" posted on the World of Warcraft forums that the new MMOG was already underway and that "it'll be a brand-new franchise, which means the lore, art, and gameplay are being developed entirely from scratch." He added, "We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far."

Blizzard Entertainment declined to comment on any further details.

The revelation comes after previous admissions by Blizzard that a new MMOG was in the works, though this is the first time that Blizzard admitted the game was a new franchise. In January 2007, Blizzard revealed that it was already planning for a fresh MMOG that Blizzard's vice president of entertainment, Itzik Ben Bassat, described as "something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level."

By October 2008, there were already clues that the MMOG would be an original property. In an interview with Wired, Blizzard CEO Michael Morhaime said that the game would "not be a sequel to World of Warcraft. It will be different," adding that the game would be so different that it wouldn't compete with World of Warcraft.

In a 2007 forum post, Blizzard rep "Drysc" responded to rumors about two job listings for "Next-Gen MMO" artists, stating that the job listings were for an "unannounced Next-Gen MMO," adding "and that doesn't mean for World of Warcraft, either." This February, Blizzard's lead designer Jeffrey Kaplan (aka "Tigole") left his post as game director of World of Warcraft and its new expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, so he could oversee work on the new game.

The last time Blizzard released a new franchise was in 1998, with the distribution of Starcraft. By storming ahead with a new franchise, Blizzard Entertainment hopes to further fatten its engorged pocketbooks. Last week, Activision Blizzard announced that it had exceeded expectations and pocketed $981 million for the January-March quarter. During that period, the company earned more than $100 million a month from MMORPGs sales and subscriptions.

"How does this not compete with WoW? Even if you can afford it, there's just not enough time to play two MMOs at once." They're going for a different demographic. There will still be some competition, but if someone unsubscribes from WoW to play the new MMO, Blizzard isn't losing any customers or subscription fees, so it's all good.

It's impossible to release any kind of video game and not in some way compete with WoW.

Hmmmm......they have caught my attention. I don't hate Blizzard, I just dislike World of Warcraft because i'm long done with it. I know I will definately try this new one out whatever it is. What makes me wonder though is how it won't compete with Warcraft, perhaps a retail bought free monthly game akin to Guild Wars? That would be interesting, especially with Blizzards committment to additional content and expansions.

Should be interesting. Blizzard has been milking the same three IPs for over 15 years (Warcraft lifted from Warhammer, Diablo an IP developed by Condor, which later became Blizzard North six months before it's release). They've always been good at copying good ideas from other devs and making highly polished games. So now we get to see how original and innovative Bliz can be. Looking forward to it.

They've absorbed so many elite developers in the last 2-3 years from other studios, it's no surprise a new team would be formed to create a brand new franchise. It's certainly going to be a well funded project.

I'm going to echo the sentiments of those hoping Blizz takes this game in a more hardcore / complex direction. Something like Mortal Online is doing: an open PvP game with full loot and no instances. Basically EVE in either a fantasy setting or a sci fi setting that isn't (entirely) space combat. They have the power to do some really good things for this genre and redeem themselves for WoW pretty much destroying MMO gaming. Give me something like Pre-CU SWG Blizz!

I'm hoping when they say it's so different it shouldn't compete with WoW that it ends up being sci-fi instead of fantasy. However that just doesn't seem different enough to not compete against WoW so it will be very interesting to see what this ends up being.

I even wonder if they will produce something that's not "main stream". WoW is ridiculously easy, and in a brief statement, feels like a waste of my time. Hopefully, they'll create something for all of us EVE fans looking for a medevil/fantasy counterpart.

If the subscription is free...I'll be interested. But I hate the idea of game publishers profiting heavily on monthly fees. I'd rather play video games, than have them play me.

Indeed I would like to see this innovative MMO their talking about, wonder what their gonna strip from other MMOs this time, maybe the guild system from WAR, the director system for dungeons (supposedly from KoTR MMO), Flight from Aion, maybe their gonna add a bazaar system from ff11. OOOOO and who knows some free MMORPG games might be sucked too.

It's too bad it has to be an MMO. I'd like to see an MMO style game that has to be played multiplayer on a console. That way i can get my friends in playing and have the fun of instance running, and hopefully avoid feeling obligated to play 10 hours a day. Diablo is close, but even though it can be played multiplayer, it's a single player game with great multiplayer built in.

I get the feeling that they're sick and tired of dealing with the lore nuts out there whenever Blizzard tries to do something with their own game and IP. Now these people will have nothing to whine over.

It'll be interesting to see how "Original" their new franchise is, since their previous franchises, while very well done, are pretty much ripped off from older ones. I don't mean like sampling in music, I mean that Warcraft was supposed to be a Warhammer game kind of ripped off. Still, I'm sure the game will be awesome.

Never question Blizzard's judgement (unless you play a hunter in WoW), they've never made a product I couldn't help but enjoy and if they say they wont poach WoW customers with their new MMO of whatever sorts then probably you should believe them.

mmo's have to be some of the most difficult games to introduce to the market. Known IPs with an installed fan base is one thing, but a brand new IP? Who knows? with the market saturated as it is, I think if they pull it off just right, it has potential to bring a breath of fresh air to a stale genre. Again, groundbreaking is really what the mmo space needs. You already see devs like Bioware trying to tap into that by integrating story into an mmo. If that succeeds, the bar will just be set that much higher for future projects. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm interested in seeing how this pans out.

I woulda liked to have seen a Starcraft Online personally, but a new IP should be great, something new to see at least. I also hope it's not another Fantasy MMO tho...I would really like to see more Sci-Fi MMOs out there, and actually succeed (sry Tabula Rasa). :P
