Blizzard: Next MMORPG 'brand new' IP

Forum post from publisher reveals next massively multiplayer project will not be based on any existing franchises.

Rumors of a "World of Starcraft" were jettisoned this week when a Blizzard Entertainment representative revealed that the company's next MMOG will be based on an entirely new franchise. When it is finally released, the new, mystery-shrouded game will end the company's 11-year elaboration of its three mainstay franchises: Starcraft, Warcraft, and Diablo.

On Tuesday, Blizzard rep "Zarhym" posted on the World of Warcraft forums that the new MMOG was already underway and that "it'll be a brand-new franchise, which means the lore, art, and gameplay are being developed entirely from scratch." He added, "We have nothing to advertise for the new MMO because it's a shell of a game thus far."

Blizzard Entertainment declined to comment on any further details.

The revelation comes after previous admissions by Blizzard that a new MMOG was in the works, though this is the first time that Blizzard admitted the game was a new franchise. In January 2007, Blizzard revealed that it was already planning for a fresh MMOG that Blizzard's vice president of entertainment, Itzik Ben Bassat, described as "something innovative and new that really brings entertainment to another level."

By October 2008, there were already clues that the MMOG would be an original property. In an interview with Wired, Blizzard CEO Michael Morhaime said that the game would "not be a sequel to World of Warcraft. It will be different," adding that the game would be so different that it wouldn't compete with World of Warcraft.

In a 2007 forum post, Blizzard rep "Drysc" responded to rumors about two job listings for "Next-Gen MMO" artists, stating that the job listings were for an "unannounced Next-Gen MMO," adding "and that doesn't mean for World of Warcraft, either." This February, Blizzard's lead designer Jeffrey Kaplan (aka "Tigole") left his post as game director of World of Warcraft and its new expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, so he could oversee work on the new game.

The last time Blizzard released a new franchise was in 1998, with the distribution of Starcraft. By storming ahead with a new franchise, Blizzard Entertainment hopes to further fatten its engorged pocketbooks. Last week, Activision Blizzard announced that it had exceeded expectations and pocketed $981 million for the January-March quarter. During that period, the company earned more than $100 million a month from MMORPGs sales and subscriptions.

"a shell of a game thus far" -- I've seen a lot of 'shells' get cancelled... But enoslives7 was right, I don't predict this will actually be released for a near decade...

Whatever it is, it won't HAVE to compete with WoW. It'll probably not be an RPG of any kind, thus appealing to a different crowd; the crowd that doesn't like RPG's. That way they'll have the RPG people, AND the [blank] people.

@BK-Sleeper: Thanks man, but truly, even if I ran with it, Balidanny thought of it.

@nappan: That... ... That is probably the most brilliant idea I've ever heard for an MMO in... ever. An MMO to target the female audience?! It's brilliant!

See, what would be interesting is if Blizzard tried it's hardest to keep World of Warcraft going for years upon years...I mean, I don't play it myself, but why venture into unknown territory when they could just as easily stick with what they got going? They're already working on Diablo 3, that's going to be hugenormous on its own. World of Warcraft has easily surpassed what Everquest once was, blew that out of the water...along with Final Fantasy XI...what's the point of risking their future with new intellectual property if all they're doing is likely sabotaging themselves and taking loyal WOW players and getting them to play something new? It's pretty unlikely the new game will be nearly as popular as WOW, let alone MORE popular, which...I think is what they're shooting for maybe?

@Balidanny: Thank you, I can laugh again! ;) Yeah, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't compete... but all kidding aside, targeting a female audience would be brilliant if they could pull it off. IF you get women to buy into a MMO, that's not a totally untapped market, but it's undertapped. There is also the fact that if you get women congregating online, men (and boys) will follow. It could actually be a quick fiscal move. Personally I think they'll make a completely new MMO IP, and when the time comes to kill WoW, they'll be the ones to do it with their own product. They can wean people off WoW, and onto their new IP, and use some of the exisiting ifrastructure! It's financially brilliant, people will love it, and people who can't stand MMOs (like me) will cringe... and die a little inside at the waste of Blizzard's talent.

1. I already knew this, it was pretty obvious. I think Blizzard even confirmed this themselves months ago. 2. Is Blizzard the only PC developer GameSpot cares about?

I'll laugh if its target audience is school girls and it is an mmo about fairies and princes and dresses. That would qualify as not competing with WoW =)

"Forum post from publisher reveals next massively multiplayer project..." *flips channel, begins to snore* Oh how I hate MMOs, and it's all so much more painful that BLIZZARD is the one churning it out.

The mind boggles with what new IP Blizzard has up its sleeves. I wonder if it will look more realistic, or maintain the cartoon-look that its other 3 franchises have.

What's interesting to me is that Zarhym said in the forum "We've already stated it'll be a brand new franchise", yet...they hadn't. As far as I know, there hadn't been any confirmation on that. Seems like Zarhym let the cat out of the bag sooner than Blizzard may have wanted.

This is excellent news. World of StarCraft seemed inevitable; a whole new I.P. could bring a desperately-needed jolt to a sagging genre. Just please, PLEASE don't make it another fantasy game.
