Blizzard's next-gen MMO unlikely to be subscription-based

Cofounder Mike Morhaime says Titan likely won't carry a subscription fee when it does launch; project going through "re-envisioning."

Blizzard Entertainment's next-generation MMORPG--codenamed Titan--may not carry a subscription fee or even be an MMORPG when it releases, cofounder Mike Morhaime said today during an Activision Blizzard earnings call.

No Caption Provided

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

At the end of May, Blizzard confirmed "large design and technology changes" for Titan. He also made clear today that no official release date for the game has been announced so far.

The executive also pointed out that several developers on Titan have been shifted to the World of Warcraft and Diablo development teams.

Blizzard Entertainment's current MMO, World of Warcraft, is the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market. It launched in 2004 and had 7.7 million subscribers as of June 30.

Rift's hybrid model is the best. If you are a free player, you get everything. No restrictions on zones, levels or gear. Not even number of hotbars (looking at you TOR). Yet if you sub, then you get bonus goodies for faster xp, pvp favor, etc.

That's how a hybrid should be, reward you for subbing not punish you for not subbing.

Lol, no subscription based MMO following WoW has even come close to being as successful as it. It's kind of ironic that the company behind WoW can't then make another subscription based MMO. F2P or buy-to-play (with cosmetic microtransactions) is here to stay.

If there's a cash-shop like GW2, I'm not interested.

I'm sick of Pay-To-Win games.

Want the best armor? Swipe your debit card. Want faster experience? Swipe your debit card.

It's crap.

@Tripwolf i think you are misinformed about GW2 , cash shop in Gw2 are just a cosmetic . if you see an armor in cash shop , it just a skin . it doesnt add any attribute bonus. and you can use your in-game currency to buy from cash shop .

@Tripwolf Guild Wars 2's cash shop is not selling any game changer items besides exp boosters. It's mostly cosmetics (costumes, pets etc) and some personal extras like extra bank slots. Nothing to create unfair differences between players.

I love the way GW2 does it. I don't feel like i got ripped off and they constantly are updating and doing new things in the game all for one price and the store items are either cosmetic or small stuff that doesn't make a large difference either way. I'd like to see it go this route myself...hopefully not the way WoW is with a subscription AND in-game store. $15 for a hood is kinda nuts. Just my opinion.

It's about time they show us something already. As Guild Wars 2 started the next gen MMO stream, many other great next gen mmo's keep coming to the market, lowering the chance of Titan's success day by day and they crush WoW while they are at it too.

they let wow fall to shambles, they destroyed diablo, they decided a card game was the thing they needed to fill a gap. they are going to tease us for the next 15 years with titan. they put ghost into a time machine to be released in 100 years.

Starcraft is a good playthrough on the campaign, and the custom games out there are good too, but the competitive multiplayer is not for everyone.

That leaves warcraft.......dont mess it up!

By the looks of it, Blizzards needs to launch a time machine to please my fellow commentators. Nostalgia can't guide anyone to anywhere.

I don't know. The longer Blizzard takes on this game, the worse it may turn out. A long development time did not do Diablo 3 any favors. I understand taking your time to make a good game. Buuuut....

Actually Titan was scratch recently they said the project wasn't going in the right direction so the started from the ground up, we won't see this game any time soon, I kinda understand Blizzard tho its not easy to follow up to a game like WoW that on the top of its game had 12m subscribers, I don't think Blizzard left this game to die, there's so much you can do on a 10 year old game, but WoW is slowly dieing, they just have to put Titan out before that happens to avoid losing their massive Fan Base.

Called it, and now we're just waiting for a console announcement as well. It wouldn't surprise me tbh. Since they're going back and changing the design and technology.

That probably means i'll skip it, if that's the case.

I'm sure this redesign has something to do with the fact that Blizzard takes so long to put out a game that by the time the game does come out it's, now, old and outdated.

@Slagar Yeah the practices of Activision/Blizzard are far worse than EA as of late, but still ride on the laurels of fanbois. Act/Blizz make rehash graphically inferior games every time. Then charge out the ying yang to play. I enjoy far more the games coming from EA (Bioware, Visceral anyone). But mindless internetz love Blizz but hate EA cause it is the cool thing to do.

While I agree with the Acti-Blizz part, I'll have to agree to disagree with the EA bit. EA was good some years back when they started publishing the Dead Space, Mass Effect, Mirror's Edge, DICE games. Then it went downhill when the sequels started coming out. But yeah, still a hell of a lot better than Acti-Blizz any day of the week. :)

No subscription... But will there be a RMAH? If so, then we'd finally find out that the D3 RMAH was actually lucrative for the company.

Don't you understand, game company's won't survive when people have to pay 15 dollar each month to play it, look at all other mmo's with that idiotic plan who all drowned in crappy sales. p2p is pure shit.

Starting to get REAL sick of the FTP, or in real world terms pay to win. This model needs to go. It's ruining the MMO genre of games and like everything else in the gaming industry, it's all falling apart. I miss the good ol days of MMO gaming...*sigh* such is the way of the future I guess where the industry is run by whiney 10 year old brats who use mommy and daddies bank card to get ahead then slap everyone in the face with their giant epeen, i mean ego. Things need to change if the gaming industry is to survive the next major gaming crash.

@xeoneex66 Xeon looks like you dont even know what you are sick of!! seriously you are one of the people who don't even know what shet they are talking!! All FTP games have real money purchasable items that are cosmetics and in no way give you an edge over other players!! I dont even know if you are a troll or what!!

@adilejaz @xeoneex66 It's quite evident you haven't played many FTP mmo's, while there are plenty with cosmetic items, there are ALOT of korean MMO's that have items that help you to get ahead. Take Rappelz for example, there are items to increase the power of your weapons/armor. And this is just one game.

@Tyler Hanson Except GW2 was largely a failure when compared to many other MMOs. The playerbase has drastically dropped because the content is just a bunch of grind. Nothing substantial.

You know the industry is in trouble when the company who made the most off of subscription based gaming (several billion) will not make anymore subscription based games.

They know its better to just make a shit FTP where people will pay a lot more than 15 a month.

WoW isn't that great now, but its still the best MMO to have ever been made and maintained, and it was largely due to the fact that everyone in that game was always on equal footing, and everyone had to pay a small fee. In today's games its always 'free to play' but if you want a one up, or if you simply want to have any fun, you need to pay real money. Generally it ends up being more than the 10-15 per month that old sub based games were, and they produce little to no content post launch.

There are a few games that do fine in the FTP market and they do it well (LoL, TF2, DotA 2) but largely every FTP game is made to make a customer want to pay as much as possible in a short time, but not have enough content to keep them around. They use this high pay and turnover rate for a couple years, then shut it down.

Wonderful. I've pretty much given up hope there will ever be a good MMO again.

sadly B2p payment means a very shity community , i played many mmos and i yet to seen an annoying kidish and unhelpfull community such as gw2. ( the game itself is nice, played for long time but the ppl are horrible, many times i see some1 asking questions and instead of answers kids laugh at him ) the only reason ppl play "togheter" is because the game was built in a nice way the force them 2. otherwise it would have been the worst ninja game u had ever seen i sure!.
