Blizzard Entertainment's next-generation MMORPG--codenamed Titan--may not carry a subscription fee or even be an MMORPG when it releases, cofounder Mike Morhaime said today during an Activision Blizzard earnings call.

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

At the end of May, Blizzard confirmed "large design and technology changes" for Titan. He also made clear today that no official release date for the game has been announced so far.

The executive also pointed out that several developers on Titan have been shifted to the World of Warcraft and Diablo development teams.

Blizzard Entertainment's current MMO, World of Warcraft, is the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market. It launched in 2004 and had 7.7 million subscribers as of June 30.

I think there's something interesting about Activision/Blizzard.

I was looking at my stock portfolio today, which was up a great deal.

Stocks like 3m and J&J have been doing well with return rates in the 20s. But ATVI is up 58 percent in the last year. That's an incredible return. I wouldn't buy it now, but I wish I had invested more in them. And their upper level employees are probably doing happy dances.

@dmblum1799 That's pretty much how the stock market has been doing lately. Average companies are up around 20%. Ones that performed poorly or have low projections are lower, others that have been doing well are higher. A good sign for the economy, though also somewhat artificial.

If they're not even sure that's it's going to be an MMORPG at this point... what the heck have they been doing all this time?

@jinzo9988 Pretty much means they're trying to do something new that doesn't necessarily fit into the existing genre definition.

@chibi-acer @jinzo9988 Maybe... but you'd think after all these years they would at least know what kind of game they're attempting to create. All the planning steps, outlines, systems and concepts should be put in place before the game is actually worked on, for the most part. I don't think something like a genre change fits that category. It sure seems like this is shaping up to be a Duke Nukem Forever at this rate.

@jinzo9988 Well, keep in mind just a few months ago they completely tossed out what they had for Titan and started over. Their current version may be different from what they had, since apparently they didn't care for what they had created so far.
