Blizzard's next-gen MMO unlikely to be subscription-based

Cofounder Mike Morhaime says Titan likely won't carry a subscription fee when it does launch; project going through "re-envisioning."

Blizzard Entertainment's next-generation MMORPG--codenamed Titan--may not carry a subscription fee or even be an MMORPG when it releases, cofounder Mike Morhaime said today during an Activision Blizzard earnings call.

No Caption Provided

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be," Morhaime said. "While we can't talk about the details yet, it is unlikely to be a subscription-based MMORPG."

At the end of May, Blizzard confirmed "large design and technology changes" for Titan. He also made clear today that no official release date for the game has been announced so far.

The executive also pointed out that several developers on Titan have been shifted to the World of Warcraft and Diablo development teams.

Blizzard Entertainment's current MMO, World of Warcraft, is the biggest subscription-based MMO on the market. It launched in 2004 and had 7.7 million subscribers as of June 30.

Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2 did it, and those are both great games. There is NO reason other people (like Bioware who failed) can't do it right like they did.

@colt_a @DarthLod I don't know whether it is dying or not, because I bought the game and for some stupid reason the game doesn't run on my PC (tried everything; it's just a minor incompatibility/bad luck that they'll never fix) but even if it were dying, that would be down to game design, not how they implemented their payment model.

Not subscription based sounds good to me, but I fear that they're still going the minitransactions / limited eyperience until paid / mendatory for progress ingame shop approach.

I will wait how this turns out and will also wait for detailed reviews and hands-on tests of whatever game they're considering this for and then make a buying decision or not.

I think Guild Wars for example is doing it right in that regard - Buy once and it's yours to play whenever as long as the servers are up and the real money obtainables are pretty much for decoration and entirely optional and don't hinder any ingame progress.

@XxXDarkness0XxX Nah bro, sounds too hardcore. Blizzard wouldn't want to alienate the lucrative 4-7 year old market. It's probably going to be a (literal) slot machine MMO.

I wonder maybe if they are changing it from a WoW successor type MMO into an Elder Scrolls type open world RPG. The technology change apparently means they may now be developing it for next gen consoles.

Just some thoughts...

Don't fuss people, "titan" will be released around Christmas 2018... unless Blizzard drag it on for few more years... (sarcasm... in case someone actually believed this retarded comment of mine)

I'd be worried that they've seen the potential for making even more money through creating excessive micro transaction necessities like bag space or character slots ala Guild Wars 2.

@DarkManiaN_1979 Extra bag space and character slots are not limited to being bought with real money. My friends and I all bought gem items by converting gold to gems, and 3 of them even got the collector's edition in the same way. Just saying....

"We're in the process of selecting a new direction for the project and re-envisioning what we want the game to be,"

In other words, for the past few years we had no idea what we were trying to make or create even though we said the game was in a playable state. Blizzard really hasnt made anything innovative or new for nearly 10 years now. Dont expect Titan to be anything that great.

After 4 years we never got to see a single screenshot or bit of info at all, it makes one wonder if this was just a huge PR stunt or whatever you call it to increase their stocks.

I would LOVE to see Blizzard launch a buy once MMO payment plan, aka Guild Wars and Defiance route. Buy the game once and have the option to buy cosmetic items in the store. You get a nice lump sum of cash when players buy and can also make money for those who want a little more without damaging gameplay and balance. If Blizzard hops on this boat i will gladly board.

@DrBomberJack I hope they avoid the element of randomness of purchases which ArenaNet seems to be in love with right now. Loot you get in-game I understand but I do not want that mysterious element added to my actual purchases. When I make a purchase I know what I want, I don't want to be surprised when I open a box or whatever they call them and get some random piece of crap like a Mystery Tonic.

They need to make a dedicated store to allow us to buy skins kinda like Team Fortress 2 but of course they'd be stat-less skins unlike TF2. I love that TF2 gives you multiple ways to get items.

It's a weird dynamic we are in the subscription based MMO is for the most part dead. So you have two options go free to play or go in the way of Guild wars. Both have their plus and minuses from a purely fiscal sense.

I'm willing to bet "Titan" was going to be WoW2, but with the decline in subs, they have now changed it to a MOBA/DOTA style game.

Sounds like Titan isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

They're trying to figure how to build a game around a revenue model, and not how to implement a revenue model into a game....and so far they're undecided on either.

Priorities.

So in other words they have nothing currently under development to follow up WoW and even if they started today it's going to be years before they could release a modern MMO. That's pretty pathetic.

@surrealme Yup I saw this coming...Past 4 years and not a single word of screenshot of the game, even though they said it was in the works and they had a playable form of it. I wonder if they were lying through their teeth all along and it was just some marketing stunt.

I hope they don't do a F2P model, "buy to play" is a much more balanced approach IMO. The Secret World and Guild Wars 2 does a good job of making you feel like you bought an entire game without having to suffer micro-transactions every 15 minutes.

Beyond the $30 to buy the game, I've only spent $10-$15 every few months on The Secret World when they release new content packs, which I find more than fair.

When they made "large design and technology changes" in diablo 3 they dumbed it down and took away a lot of what made diablo 2 fun.

It is unfortunate to hear they really don't have a followup to WoW even planned. That game has run its course many times over. Hopefully Everquest Next can replace it.

Bad sign. This is the price you pay when you take years and years to develop a game. The big issue for Blizzard and this title is the new consoles coming out which will be bringing all new technologies with the latest Open GL and DX 11.1.. They need to probably do a complete graphics overhaul. And clearly have seen the competition their up against and said we can't compete with the likes of The Division and Destiny.. assuming that this is a FPS shooter Action RPG/MMO hybrid. Blizzard needs to manage their time more effecively. Project Titan release date 2018. DX9.0c

They only seem to make Diablo, Warcraft and Starcraft games, and if people are being shifted from Titan to Warcraft and Diablo, i'm guessing it is a MMO Starcraft game taking place after their last Starcraft 2 expansion.

Believe me, Blizzard is not going to create this for charity.

A F2P model will have you pay for items, gear, mounts and everything you can think of.

Me personally, I dont have the time for a MMORPG anymore. Way too time consuming.

@brainiac1988 I dont think this is going to be your typical MMO. I think it will be a hybrid Action RPG/FPS or maybe they are going all out with a variation of classes and gameplay styles, like D3 but far more advanced as far as graphics and variation. But I have no idea I have lost a little bit of respect for Blizzard. I still love their games but I just feel like with all the resources and time they put into D3 and with there RMAH debacle, it just could have been better.
