Castlevania: Lords of Shadow DLC a 'mistake' says Konami

Company rep says it never planned DLC for game, but senior management thought it would be a good idea; content ended up being "rushed."

Developing downloadable content for 2010's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was a "mistake," publisher Konami told Gameranx recently. Head of product planning and development Dave Cox said Konami never intended to create any DLC for the action game, but ended up building the Reverie and Resurrection add-ons at the request of higher-ups.

It was a
It was a "mistake" to make DLC for the original Lords of Shadow, says Konami.

"The problem was that the game's success caught everyone by surprise. It caught senior management by surprise and they wanted us to do DLC," Cox said. "We never planned to do DLC, so we ended up doing DLC after the fact and in hindsight that was a mistake. It was rushed. We had to rush it to market."

Cox said that despite its rushed nature, the DLC for Lords of Shadow was effective in that it "enriched the story." GameSpot's review of the Reverie add-on found it to be generally pleasing, but short, requiring about an hour to complete.

Cox did not share specific DLC plans for its upcoming sequel Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, but he did offer a tease concerning the path Konami would take with potential content for the game.

"I think if we were going to do DLC again it would have to be planned right from the get go," he said. "And it wouldn't be something that would try to build upon an ending--it would be something that's perhaps a side story that enriches the original story. If we were going to do DLC again, it would be something much more carefully considered."

I bought Lords Of Shadow and in my opinion it's one of the worst games I've ever played a lot and I mean a lot of quality problems, the story is simply stupid because there's a plot hole that almost insults your intelligence and turning an awesome game like Castlevania into a God Of War-Shadow Of The Colossus-Uncharted rip off is going too far. Konami is the worst publisher in the world if you don't believe ask to Silent Hill.

@MayMosh One of the worst games you've ever played?! LOL! Is the grand total of games you've played less than 10? And are the handful all GOTY winners? Unbelievable.

I dont think Konami is the worst publisher but i do agree on all your other points. I hated that this game was so overtly about "christian" themes and absolutes when all the other Castlevania's did not have that focus at all. It really dumbed down the Castlevania Universe and that is a terrible loss for the series. I can see now that the great Castlevanis'a are well and truly behind us.

@Banefire76 Eh you do know in Symphony of the Night Dracula quotes the bible...Matt 16:26 and Lament of Innocence took place in the crusades...Castlevania has many Christian themes...I hate religion more than most but a game based on Western traditions and Vampire Lore is going to be steeped in Christian themes it was well placed. Having Satan as a final boss was a welcome change that made sense.

@DredWulf

Oh? And Satan, a creature with presumably millions if not billions of years of experience and knowledge would 1st of all allow himself to be defeated by a human, and second would sound like a sniveling child like he was in the game?!

I mean he said this...."Whats this?! Is this gods power?!".....As if he would NOT know what gods power was and are you really going to tell me that someone with his many years of experience and knowledge of god from his time in heaven is going to ask this as incredulously as he did???? OH PLEASE! This game had childish writing and planning and frankly was an insult to any thinking individual. And if you think for a second that the previous games had a christian focus to them than i dont know what games you were playing. Thier focus was magic, the occult, vampiric, mythical beastiary that only had a splash of christian in it (say 5%) Whereas this game had 60-70% christian themes and was light on the other themes. Sorry but you are wrong.

They're planning future DLC already? Whay not including it in the original game instead? It's like planning to sell you something incomplete!

Bleeding hell Cox, cut yourself some slack. As far as dlc goes the Reverie and Resurrection packs are some of the best I've bought. The main game was perfectly fine without them, but they're damn near essential for anyone with a passing interest in the story. I like this guy: they did great work and he's still not happy with it.

They say this only because it'd be harder for them to milk he series no that he's actully become Dracul.

Though, I think it would be far better. Show the birth of Alucard or something....

I enjoyed LoS 1. It was fun but far from perfect. Hopefully there's better pacing and more polished platforming the second time around. I never buy DLC so that part doesn't concern me (unless it somehow adversely affects the single player campaign)...

I really want to play Reverie and resurrection but I don't see myself spending $20 for so little. I've been waiting patiently for them to go on sale over Xbox LIVE. At $5 a pop, I'm down like a fat kid on a see-saw. I just hope I haven't already missed my chance.I don't see what the hate for this game is all about? A mistake? I think not. People are acting like this is how Castlevania will be from now on. Do you really think the side-scrolling's over? Not a chance.

@mrboone01 Newer gamer? Good one. Been around this site since 97 and playing games since 89'. But hey, i'm going to help you out. 15 hours is pretty damn amazing for an action beat-em up title. It's all relative to what type of game you're playing. 15 hours is short for a story-driven RPG, but long for a shooter and an action title. If you'd been playing games for a while, surely you'd know that, right?

I'll also add that while I liked the game I would love to have something of Symphony of the Night's caliber with current tech and production values.

The game itself was one of my favorite games of 2010. I wanted to play the DLC but there was no way I was going to pay 10 dollars each for 1-2 hour add-ons. I'd buy them if they would ever lower the price.

Hey Konami since you know it was rushed drop the price to something reasonable already.

I don't get it. DLC is something supposed to be made after a games release. Like, hey, we released the game but we got all these new ideas.

And they're saying it would have been better to plan DLC AHEAD of the games release?I'm mad I can't even add anything else to this without cussing. THAT KINDA CRAP SHOULD GO INTO THE GAME UPON RELEASE. WHY HOLD BACK CONTENT. ARGHHHH

@AuronAXE Thanks for proving my point so perfectly. I wrote this before scrolling down to read yours. ;) No offense intended of course.

That last quote block from Cox seems to express *exactly* what players who mindlessly complain about DLC say: that they are "planning" what content to leave out of the game. But this proves the corollary, that unplanned strap-it-on DLC is of poor quality. It's a no-win argument.

@AuronAXE They don't mean holding content back but by the time the game has reached the beta stage most of the design team have much less work to do (mostly just reviewing the implementation of their designs) At this point they start planning stuff they might add to the game that they won't have time to implement before the games scheduled release ie. DLC. Just planning something doesn't make finished content that can be released with the game. They need to record new dialogue, design and construct new levels, generate new art assets and model. I could go on but I hope you get the idea. Planning stuff ahead of release doesn't mean they're robbing you of content. (except when they release it day 1 or with the the content on disk. hello capcom/EA)

@moonlightwolf01 In my experience most "design teams" have multiple jobs and during beta there is even less time to do things, they are to busy doing other things that are in a rush to be done.

Now for the 2nd game they're going to get their idea for the whole, then they're going to take part of it out so that they can sell it separately as DLC.

As a good game fan, I'm very glad that 'mistake' was made. Fortunately I'm not enough of a Castlevania fan for it to feel out of place for me, and I enjoyed it for what it is, a solid action game.

@pez2k_ As a good game fan I am sad that whole mistake was made. It may not have been a horrid game but it pales in comparison to it's predecessors but since the market is far more receptive of Goth of War than a real Castlevania game we're at risk of seeing another great series destroyed by the homogenization of the modern gaming industry.
