Castlevania: Lords of Shadow DLC a 'mistake' says Konami

Company rep says it never planned DLC for game, but senior management thought it would be a good idea; content ended up being "rushed."

Developing downloadable content for 2010's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was a "mistake," publisher Konami told Gameranx recently. Head of product planning and development Dave Cox said Konami never intended to create any DLC for the action game, but ended up building the Reverie and Resurrection add-ons at the request of higher-ups.

It was a
It was a "mistake" to make DLC for the original Lords of Shadow, says Konami.

"The problem was that the game's success caught everyone by surprise. It caught senior management by surprise and they wanted us to do DLC," Cox said. "We never planned to do DLC, so we ended up doing DLC after the fact and in hindsight that was a mistake. It was rushed. We had to rush it to market."

Cox said that despite its rushed nature, the DLC for Lords of Shadow was effective in that it "enriched the story." GameSpot's review of the Reverie add-on found it to be generally pleasing, but short, requiring about an hour to complete.

Cox did not share specific DLC plans for its upcoming sequel Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, but he did offer a tease concerning the path Konami would take with potential content for the game.

"I think if we were going to do DLC again it would have to be planned right from the get go," he said. "And it wouldn't be something that would try to build upon an ending--it would be something that's perhaps a side story that enriches the original story. If we were going to do DLC again, it would be something much more carefully considered."

Thanks for giving me the heads up on your next LOS. Now I can just wait for a GOTY edItion at 29.99, and get the dlc included. Since you just contracted the Cashcom disease.

@berzerk0912 I'd be interested in seeing a GOTY edition, as well. Maybe they can put a quote on the box related to what was shared in this article:

"The new Game of the Year Edition of the bestselling Castlevania: Lords of Shadows with the DLC Reverie and Resurrection now included. 'We never planned to do DLC, so we ended up doing DLC after the fact and in hindsight that was a mistake.' -- David Cox, Konami"

@Q-abs

I was refering to the sequel whenever it comes out, but I would not be surprised if Konami would rerelease the first one as a GOTY with their DLC just to hype everyone up for the second LOS.

Interesting, this, isn't it? Release a game without planning for DLC, then do some because it sold well and the players are hungry for more- result, rushed DLC that people don't think is worth it. Alternatively, plan the DLC from the start- result, polished DLC that people immediately complain should have been in the original game.

Sometimes I'm glad I don't work in the games industry!

@majere613 Or you could just focus on making a good game and good dlc and ignore the bitching of whiny gamers.

"You won't be exploring much of these locals, because the game is very strict about where you can go and how you get there"

That's part of the reason I didn't enjoy the game the way i think I should have, that and the titan bosses. Why does everything have to be over the top these days?

Castle, castle, castle, castle, castle........!

The length of this game is just insane. It's like, 15 to 20 hours long. Plus, they offered two new chapters as DLC? I really didn't felt ripped off at all. I actually bought Reverie. I liked it. As for the Resurreciton DLC, it came too late and I skipped it.

1. It DID add to the story.

2. Playing as the second character was fun.

BUT

Both were short. The second was very shallow. And neither were worth the price.

They should have been put together as 1 DLC (with the drawn out boss fight in the second being condensed).

I am fine with DLC done right. But most of it is crap

I'm on the fence when it comes to DLC. It is definitely the case that there exist developers who are operating solely under the premise of slapping a mediocre to good game together and withholding a ton of content from the original so that they can milk us dry with DLC. Because of this, the DLC landscape has become quite saturated from the abuse of this business model. On the other hand, sometimes (and it isn't super rare) you get a developer that really puts some thought and time into their DLC and they release content that a person could agree is worth the $15 they charge for it because it significantly adds to the original. So my take on DLC is to take it day by day. If the DLC is good, I'll buy. If it sucks, I won't.

I commend the individuals at Konami who fessed up to the fact that they are dissatisfied with the DLC they produced for LoS. It just means that if they are forced to make DLC for LoS 2 because of greedy execs, at least now they know ahead of time and can remediate their issues from before.

I'm not defending DLC because there are times that it is just a ploy to get more money form the consumer. That being said I have many friends who are programers and designers in the game industry. Often times they have to remove planned items for a game for a myriad of reasons.

DLC give them a chance to reassess items that without the DLC option would just be lost to us gamers. So don't always view it as an item that "should be in the original game", Because sometimes it would have been an item you'd never get to see without the extra time for development.

I would much rather games were built without DLC plans...at least then developers don't leave part of the game out that should be included in the initial purchase....or at least do something like Alan Wake did (at least with the collectors edition, don't know about the normal one) include a voucher for the first piece of DLC with a new purchase of the game...then let people decide if they want to purchase additional DLC if it becomes available.

It was nice of them to admit this or is this a clever way of telling gamers to expect dlc for LOS 2 that's better than the original?

your boss tells you to go make more money off of it and you think offering it for free achieves this end?
