Cerny: Full hardware capabilities of PS4 may take 'three to four years' to be harnessed

PS4 architect says that while the system is easy to begin working on, the hardware's full potential won't be accessed until 'year three or year four'.

PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny believes that while PlayStation 4 developers are already quickly adapting to content creation for the new system, the real customisation and utilisation of the machine's true power won't be until "year three or year four of the console".

No Caption Provided

In an interview with Polygon during Gamescom, Cerny outlined the need to create an obvious visual gap between the capabilities of current and next-generation systems.

"We set our target at 10 times the PlayStation 3's performance, because that's what we felt we needed to achieve in order to differentiate the titles," Cerny told the website. "When I did pitches to developers about the hardware, I talked about what I call the Akihabara test. Akihabara is an electronics district in Tokyo, it's just full of stores where you can buy just about anything you plug into a wall socket. I knew that at some point, there'd be out on the sidewalk a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and they might even be showing the same game, and the PlayStation 4 had to be powerful enough that when people walked by, they had to look at the PlayStation 4 and say, 'Wow, I have to have that.'

"I believe we are at that level of performance," Cerny said. "I mean, the million pre-orders we have is, I think, speaking to that."

Cerny went on to say that while the PS4's new architecture is already familiar to develop for given its PC similarities, it will still be three to four years before the real capabilities of the system are identified and harnessed.

"It's a supercharged PC architecture, so you can use it as if it were a PC with unified memory," he said. "Much of what we're seeing with the launch titles is that usage; it's very, very quick to get up to speed if that's how you use it. But at the same time, then you're not taking advantage of all the customisation that we did in the GPU. I think that really will play into the graphical quality and the level of interaction in the worlds in, say, year three or year four of the console."

The PlayStation 4 goes on sale on November 15 in North America, and November 29 for Europe, the UK, and Australia. The device will launch in 32 countries globally this year.

I thought Cerny's whole selling point was that it wouldn't take this long as that's what happened with the PS3. I guess it's better than having no games like last time.

Well yeah it's pretty much like that with all systems, look at ps3 launch titles and look at current ps3 games. We might already be somewhat impressed with ps4's launch titles but we'll definitely see much much better looking games near the end of the ps4's cycle, it's just a matter of developers familiarising with the system.

Take as long you need to, Sony. By the end of those 4 years, there will be a bigger Hard drive, Slimmer Model, and 50 bundles to choose from.

@HenrySix uncharted 3 on ps3 has far better graphics then any game you can get on the Xbox 360 so there must of been some truth behind there claims and look at the first uncharted its graphics weren't as good as the 3rd one and that's exactly what Cerny is saying will happen again the games that come out on ps4 in 4 years will look better then the ones that come out within a year of launch

@HenrySix Now, while I'll agree that the Cell processor was a bad idea (because of the dificulty in coding for it), it is indeed powerfull. Last of US, already mentiones, is an example, but I'd call attention for Metal Gear Solid 4. It was released in ´08 and it's still impressive today.

Problem with the cell is that most games are multi-platform, so it becomes a hidrance instead of a plus for developers.

ps 4 packs good config for price. it has decent 8 core processor, 7850 level gc, 8 gb ram. pc with this config and windows will cost like 800 $. as its a console, it will be optimized beyond that to perform like even more expensive pc. i dont see how its not a great investment.

@vaibhavp Not just that. The biggest benefit of consoles over PCs in my opinion is the trouble free setup and operation. Unbox, plug it into a wall socket and TV, and you're good to go. No potential headaches, no drivers seek and install, no having to buy a separate gamepad, no unnecessary OS processes and services running in the background, no hardware conflicts, etc etc etc..

@gfantini @vaibhavp You got it bad. PC gaming is waaaaay trouble free and better than you can imagine. It doesn't have that next-gen this or that. With my pc i can play PS2, PS1, PS3, Xbox, Xbox one, Wii, snes, sega titles and counting. That's seven consoles right there! No tv hassles, it's portable, it can be tweaked to enhance specific gaming areas, no excessive cables flying around, much better accessories than can be purchased for far less etc

@Bellum_Sacrum They're just trying to cover up the fact that they only *really* play one of two games (Usually Team Fortress 2 and something else), and for all the bragging they do about their hardware, they're only willing to pay $2.99 for a game on Steam. What's really funny is, after they get a game for $2.99, they install 17 of the gaudiest mods they can find, tinker with settings for 10 minutes, post screenshots of their new Steam scrollbar on Reddit, then spend maybe 15 minutes dicking around with the game before running back to TF2. PC gamers are cancer.

They said the same thing about the ps3 and turned out , the only thing that stopped a pc from playing its games was that PS3 games were coded differently. :p

@baxwam The Ram is more then enough for 1080p, it's the lower bandwidth that is the biggest bottleneck. (and an ssd would have helped, as well)

@HaloinventedFPS Using "PC" doesn't mean anything. You would need to say PC with ????$. Did Dice say how much that PC would cost?

@HaloinventedFPS Sure there's some exageration on the usage of that term, but small optimizations coupled with the unified memory and an efficient, gaming centric OS can really make a difference.

Back when Rage was launched, I remember John Carmack saying how frustrating it was that he could not harness the power of modern GPUs simply because PCs were a general purpose machine.

@HaloinventedFPS I think that statement just basically refers to the power for the price level.

The PS4 would definitely smoke a $400 pc

@HaloinventedFPS Cerny is playing the marketing game, and while it's no 'supercharged pc'..lol, the PS4 is alot of bang-for-the-buck.

And we all know Dice is targeting 680/770/780..ect owners, so they better be ahead of the next gen. consoles.

Now the XBox One..uhh, those specs are more like a 'supercharged Wii U'. ;)

It doesn't help that they will still be making a lot of games so they will also play on the PS3 and 360. You can't push the new hardware when you still have to make the games work on the old stuff. But it doesn't bother me much. I'll be more happy to have better frame rates, cleaner graphics, longer draw distances, ect.

PC guys we all know you are so much better than everyone else. What you don't seem to get is that consoles have a place in gaming that PC's just don't fit into. There are a number of reasons people prefer console gaming over PC gaming and I know you'll probably never get it but a lot of people just don't care for fooling with a PC when it comes to playing games. And if you have gamed on PC's long enough you know it has it's own issues related to PC's in general and a lot of people just don't want to fool with all of that. It's not just about the price which is what some of you seem to think.

@Dasim64 Great points. Each platform has it's advantages and the console industry drives the pc industry, so many pc gamers whom are stuck up, just don't grab how the console industry drives the pc industry, gaming wise.

One last thing. For gaming, after my latest pc bites the dust..that's it for pc gaming for me, as i always prefer console gaming anyway. With my kids, it's not easy to find time to game, and there is nothing like the ease of use of console gaming.

This is why i hoping we see 1080p/60 in all console releases, at least by 2015'.

By that time i can kiss Win 8(or whatever mess MS releases as an OS) out the window, and probably go with an Tablet only.

@Bugthesda @PhilipO45 While consoles do share a basic PC architecture now they are still very different from a PC in basic use especially from a developer's perspective. When a game developer makes a PC game they have to take into consideration an infinite variety of hardware and software possibilities as well as the fact that people are going to be playing on PC's at many different performance levels. When they program a console game they can focus entirely on that one piece of hardware to squeeze every bit of power out in order to maximize game performance. While the hardware inside may be similar, how it is used is very different. And while I agree with the fact that corporations are greedy, that is definitely not the only thing that separates consoles and the PC.

@Bugthesda @Dasim64 The 360 has only been out for just under 8 years and the PS3 less than 7. 10 years would be a massive stretch and won't happen. And it's not about being computer illiterate. Many gamers are very knowledgeable about computers but still prefer console gaming due to how care free it is.

@Bugthesda @Dasim64 I really don't think that's the problem it's the expense in my experience that keeps me away from pc gaming. Yes, I know you can build your own for much cheaper but still it gets extremely expensive to be a pc gamer and not rewarding enough when you miss out on console exclusives.

BTW It wont last 10 years they said that about ps3 and that didn't happen.

This isn't news. The same is true for both consoles from the last generation. Look at the launch titles for PS3 and 360 and it is obvious they were nowhere near as graphically advanced as titles for the same platform 6 years later. The hardware didn't change. Developers just figured out how to use the hardware more efficiently.
