Cerny: Full hardware capabilities of PS4 may take 'three to four years' to be harnessed

PS4 architect says that while the system is easy to begin working on, the hardware's full potential won't be accessed until 'year three or year four'.

PlayStation 4 lead architect Mark Cerny believes that while PlayStation 4 developers are already quickly adapting to content creation for the new system, the real customisation and utilisation of the machine's true power won't be until "year three or year four of the console".

No Caption Provided

In an interview with Polygon during Gamescom, Cerny outlined the need to create an obvious visual gap between the capabilities of current and next-generation systems.

"We set our target at 10 times the PlayStation 3's performance, because that's what we felt we needed to achieve in order to differentiate the titles," Cerny told the website. "When I did pitches to developers about the hardware, I talked about what I call the Akihabara test. Akihabara is an electronics district in Tokyo, it's just full of stores where you can buy just about anything you plug into a wall socket. I knew that at some point, there'd be out on the sidewalk a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, and they might even be showing the same game, and the PlayStation 4 had to be powerful enough that when people walked by, they had to look at the PlayStation 4 and say, 'Wow, I have to have that.'

"I believe we are at that level of performance," Cerny said. "I mean, the million pre-orders we have is, I think, speaking to that."

Cerny went on to say that while the PS4's new architecture is already familiar to develop for given its PC similarities, it will still be three to four years before the real capabilities of the system are identified and harnessed.

"It's a supercharged PC architecture, so you can use it as if it were a PC with unified memory," he said. "Much of what we're seeing with the launch titles is that usage; it's very, very quick to get up to speed if that's how you use it. But at the same time, then you're not taking advantage of all the customisation that we did in the GPU. I think that really will play into the graphical quality and the level of interaction in the worlds in, say, year three or year four of the console."

The PlayStation 4 goes on sale on November 15 in North America, and November 29 for Europe, the UK, and Australia. The device will launch in 32 countries globally this year.

I'm getting a PS4 on launch day, but I have a feeling that people are going to be disappointed in the PS4. The PSN will still suck and games like Battlefield will look like ass.

I'm getting a PS4 for MLB the Show and a few other exclusives, but I'll be buying Battlefield 4 for PC and all other milti-plats for xbox ONE.

@murderek I'll be getting both(hard to stomach a Xbox one..but i want the exclusives), but the only releases i care about are Watchdogs(pc) and BF4(pc) as i can run those at max 1080/60 or 1440/60.(if i put more into my pc)

Really only KZ:SF for the PS4 interests me(to see how the graphic engine looks, and Dead Rising 3, as i enjoy open world games and enjoyed DR1/DR2.

But that's really it. Otherwise i'll be waiting for the next batch of releases from spring 14' and onwards.

I'm hoping GTA:V hits the pc by March, as that is where i will put most of my gaming into.

@murderek Fair enough good sir, will Killzone Shadow Fall be on that list of ps4 exclusives?

Seeing and reading about the game has convinced me of a ps4 launch purchase

Yes it will. Killzone is actually the only PS4 game I will be buying at launch.

@murderek I don't see how you can make these assumptions when neither console is released...also...where is BF4 on Xbox One? Funny they didn't show a playable version of it at Gamescom...doesn't that make you wonder just maybe the PS4 version looks better than the Xbone version and DICE wanted to show the better of the two?

EDIT: Nevermind...I just seen you said BF4 for PC...but anyway...just saying..multi-plat games may look the best on PS4. Nobody really knows yet...and PSN may rock who knows?

@murderek @kizzle32 I find it hard to believe when PS4's GPU is anywhere from 40-50% faster. BF games are GPU limited which automatically gives PS4 an edge over XB1.

But with all the money to buy a PS4 and Xbox One and have a top pc rig, the most impressive release this fall/winter will be GTA:V.

Basically once you date a pretty blond..with a low iq, you have seen it all, and your wishing for someone with alot more iq..at the cost of looks.(ie..gameplay over graphics)

Well no s***. Developers just started harnessing the full power of current gen systems like a year ago. This just sounds like an excuse for why PS4 games like Battlefield 4 look like s***.

sadly it wont matter in most cases because xbone will keep it down. most developers will want to make a game for both systems and when the xbone is maxed out, i can't see developers using the extra power of the ps4 to enhance it's version of the game. the discrepancy would become too great particularly in the graphics department leading to complete meltdown of xbone.

@willfeclhman It is of course a fact this will happen, because it happened with the PS3 and X360. The only problem untill now was that even the fact that the PS3 was a little bit more powerfull than the X360, the multiplats somehow worked better on the X360 which is a crime Sony can never repeat again if they want to keep their credibility.

And the fact Cerny said it's going to be harnessed in 3-4 years has brought me a reason as to why. The OS takes 3 GB of memory. I think that in 3-4 years there will be a patch or something to screw it down to 2 or less GB's which will give one GB or more for games and for development.

Besides i think he overthought himself by saying the PS4 will be 10 times the power of the PS3. I think it might be 4-5 times more powerfull for what we see, hear and experience, but 10 times is what even the Newest games can't do.

Graphically i think the PC version of Crysis 3 on High is the Highest graphical value the next gens can offer us even in those 4-5 years.

@willfeclhman well being that they are both so similar to PC architecture, it will be much easier for them to get more out of the PS4 even on multiplatform games. I mean look at all of the different graphics settings they have on PC games nowadays...like 4-6 different levels of quality.

The reason why it takes a few yrs to fully optimize gaming engines on a newer console, is becasue that's the time needed for many development teams need. For eaxample, just look at the difference from GTA:IV's engine to GTA:V. The same of GTA(2001) to GTA:SA, from the previous gen.

All of these develoment teams need to start over new, shifting from the 'low end' PS3/360 kits, to the PS4/Xbox One kits. If anyone thinks this takes 4-6 months does not understand how game development works.

This is why Dice is still using the BF3 engine..but modified for BF4.

Basically it has alot more to do with the software side then 'coding to the metal', hardware side.

@MotRFalcon indeed, i had a quick play of madden 09 on ps3 the other day and i was like "eeww, these graphics used to be cool?"

Then i fired up the ol ps2 and played Madden 2005 and was even more shocked!

We've come a long way and like many people here I think the next 3-4 years will be quite sweet

After seeing what Konami did with MGS 4, merely 1 year after the PS3 came out... I'm still backing the games that come out next year to be pretty darn impressive, never mind 2017

@BelaidKL It's definitely a possibility. All it truly takes is a dedicated studio like Naughty Dog. Even for a system like the Wii, look at Super Mario Galaxy which released in 2007 if I remember correctly. That game looked amazing even on the Wii's sub-par hardware!

No console reaches it's full potential at launch, I thought everybody knew it took at least 3-4 years. Look at the PS3, it's near the end of it's cycle and rolling out games like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6 etc.

For those not realizing what it takes to push a 4K display:

You would need 3 780's/Titan's to do so. You're looking at a TDP of 750watts and heat distribution that is impossible(currently) with today's gpu's, that would:

1) Would cost less then $2000 to develop.

2) Would fit inside a small platform(console size), that won't overheat the console in a 1hr span.

Currently, the PS4 is about the most anyone can expect in a small form factor console/pc, and for under $500 as well.

Please understand, to push a 4K display, you're looking at the next(ie..PS5) gen. of consoles.

AMD has been pushing 6 monitors for several years now. That's 3 times as many pixels as a 4k display. Yes, it depends on what you're rendering, but Dirt 3, for example, runs just fine at that resolution on a mid-range graphics card.

@PhilipO45 Also, there's media issues, like you need well over 100 GB for a 4k game and while it will be rectified soon, it's not possible right now.

@brigasm03 The current gen is just getting maxed out in terms of hardware. I played the demo for the original Uncharted the other day and was blown away by the difference from Last of Us. Just think of what games are going to look like 4 years from now!

Once 4K tvs start coming down in price and begin to replace standard HD tvs then I think we will see a big jump since these consoles are 4K compatible.

that's probably next-next gen stuff.

i doubt the PS4 and Xbone could handle 4k resolutions effectively. They seem to be having problems with 1080p as is.

No way are these consoles going to be able to render anything but the simplest graphics in 4k resolution, unless you like playing games at 10 FPS. 4k has four times the number of pixels to render as 1080p.

@rarson @SolidIngram The PS4 is lucky to handle 1080/60, and that's with lowered graphical settings.

To achieve 4K, your looking at a pc rig of an sli 780/Titan config., which will run you $1300-$2000.

Or, you could, you know, buy a $500 AMD card that'll do it without all the microstuttering, heat, power consumption, and GPU problems.

I mean, AMD has been driving 6 monitors since the 5000 series...

@Bugthesda @PhilipO45 I have one Titan and using 4X SMAA (crysis 3)i get a lock 1080/60, maxed everything else.

Crysis 3 running in 4K would need 3 780's[oc'ed] or Titan's to reach 60fps.
