Dead Space 3 Awakened DLC revealed

First expansion for action game coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in March for $10; will be "disturbing."

Dead Space 3 launched today in North America, and publisher Electronic Arts is already readying the game's first expansion. EA today announced Dead Space 3 Awakened, a "disturbing" piece of downloadable content due out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in March for $10.

No Caption Provided

The Awakened expansion for Dead Space 3 introduces players to the franchise's "darkest chapters," EA said. Visceral Games general manager Steve Papoutsis said Awakened will represent some of the "most disturbing content [players] have ever seen in a Dead Space game."

GameSpot's Dead Space 3 review praised the game's weapon crafting system, sense of atmosphere, environmental variety, and new co-op option, but lamented its story and certain gameplay sequences. For more, check out GameSpot's full review.

I don't care if it's disturbing. I've shredded enough necros to be desensitized to it by this point.

What I want to know is where there be real answers to the mysteries of the series? If the franchise really is killed because it doesn't sell 5,000k copies I'll be left hanging forever. Just like with Kingdom Hearts.

Much of what I'd want to say has already been said in the fine comments for this article, but there is one particular thing I'd like to point out: I don't think I've ever seen the amount of comments with 20+ likes here all stating various variants of "greedy EA", "boycott EA", "what is this nonsense EA" (with some profanity) visible here all in one comment thread. EA, you really should take a look here for why your bottom-line is flagging. If your customers feel so strongly against you, you'll end up with a Windows Vista-like situation one day where you thought you could foist a product on people and get shown the finger by the customers you thought were gullible enough to keep gulping all you're giving while openly screwing them over.

@Darkitachi54 EA should make a game about itself. Oh wait, that might actually sell then they'd put DLC for stuff like how Westwood died, why founders are leaving their studios behind, why their marketing team can't do some advertisement without picking a fight with the competition in stupid and immature ways. It'd be a another Sims.

I can't stand EA's money grubbing just like the next gamer, but I keep reading people talking about protesting games because of this and there's a problem with that. I loved the first two DS games, Visceral did a great job. I have lowered my expectations for this one but I think it will still be a fun game. But should Visceral be punished for EA's bs? It's a crappy catch 22 but when we don't support a game made by a favorable developer because of the publisher, it's always the developer that gets hit hardest. If the developer falls apart because of cutting corner well then they screwed up and need to know. However, the reason EA pushes onward is because they pick up great developers and new IPs. As gamers we are stuck in a predicament: by giving our paychecks to money grubbing publishers we support their crap, but by ignoring solid IPs we hit developers and hinder new ideas for gaming.

Also, I've found that online passes and the like seem to only be included in games that the developers/publishers aren't particularly certain customers will keep. Every time I see a game launch with an online pass, I immediately become wary. A product should be well-polished, fun, GOOD enough that the customer doesn't WANT to sell it back. How hard is this to understand? Put out games that people will want to KEEP and greedy publishers won't have to worry about losing sales to the used market. It's the same deal with movies and books and any other sort of product.

A used copy of Skyrim goes for much more than used copies of Assassin's Creed 3 and Mass Effect 3. Despite launching a full year prior to AC3 and three months prior to ME3, Skyrim has retained its value far better than either of those and it doesn't have multiplayer or an online pass. Gamers are holding on to their copies because it's GOOD and they have no reason to sell it. Games do not require online components to survive, only developers and publishers that are not proud of their product seem to think such.

@Swoopalz While I agree with you on everything being polished and putting forth all your effort to put out the best game possible, comparing the vastness of Skyrim vs. ME3 AC3 is kinda silly because they dont have nearly the amount of content to match it, I remember when Skyrim came out, while I had no problems, my friend was literally stuck due to all the glitches and errors that Skyrim was launched with, Bethesda is the same as EA, every company is willing to do whatever it takes to make maximum profit....pure and simple, to think otherwise is silly, EA is one of the only reasons you can get games like Dead Space had they not have basically broken the monopoly that companies like Nintendo and Sega were holding over the gaming community. But I do hate online passes and the like, but I also like when games that I love and wish had more content come out with story expansions or side stories, I though Dead Space 2: Severed was pretty cool. Stepped away from Isaac to show somebody else fight through the Sprawl. To me its just hit and miss.

@Deathstrokeme @Swoopalz "comparing the vastness of Skyrim vs. ME3 AC3 is kinda silly because they dont have nearly the amount of content to match it"

-- ^this is my exactly point. Games need to be put out with enough content so that we feel we got our money's worth. With ME3 and AC3, we didn't. That's why their value has dropped so low so quickly: everyone is getting rid of their copies.

@Swoopalz There is what you said and also another point: used game/console sales are often used by the person selling off the game to fund more game and system purchases while introducing people to games they probably would be reluctant to pop $60 at initially but after getting it for cheap would buy the full-priced new entry/game by the concerned studio. It can be a very effective audience-building tool especially on consoles where discounts are nowhere near as steep as on PC!

Wow, they're not even trying to be subtle. This DLC has obviously been in the works for quite some time. It's not even like skins, where they can claim the art team had nothing to do during the final stages. It's a fully-fledged expansion. The resources put towards it should've instead been invested in dealing with the game's EXISTING flaws. Jees, this is ridiculous.

It's funny because (judging by recent earnings releases) EA's just barely treading water. They're not going under and they're not raking it in. And for some reason, they seem to believe that nickel-and-diming customers will net them more cash, but this definitely won't pay off in the long run. EA'll collapse under its own weight sooner or later: it might take a while, yeah, but it'll happen.

@JulyAeon That's not very fair, I'd say any cent going to EA for over a decade has precipitated that. They've definitely improved but there's too much Hollywood management and too little video game creative freedom in the company as evidenced by their nickel and diming and ridiculous avenues of growth (social games are the future! Multiplayer is the future for every genre, even for essentially single player ones! Online passes! DLC!). They definitely make great games but spoil series with their "choking bear hug" as one ex-Bioware founder said.

Yeah, keep selling incomplete games. Then, the profit will highly generate in second hand sell because people are not stupid enough to collect incomplete game(s) again and again.

Ah what a load of crap, this had to have been done before the disc went gold. This age of dlc has split game development into two teams - content for launch then content post launch.

It's so funny that I used to call EA a corrupt gaming company almost 10 years ago. After all this time they are still in business and raking in cash. Why does EA have such a bad rep and still live on? Because people continue buying their games and their copy+paste sport franchises every year.

@shadow580 It's difficult not to buy Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Crysis, Half-Life 2 (published by them for some time) and many of the best iOS games out there. They have messed up business practices and management ideas that spoil the work of their studios, but they do have great studios. As others have said, a Catch-22 situation.

EA would make much more money if they just charged a flat rate of $60, gave DLC free and built a trusting relationship with their customers who would attract more customers by word of mouth. Think about all the money they're losing from DS fans like me boycotting DS3 on principal, not even giving EA a penny for the game. The morons buying microtransactions will not make up the difference.

@Zloth2 @mjtplayer But what if you do want the content? Look at the From Ashes Mass Effect 3 DLC, it was cut content completed by another team (at least officially), even if it was day one, given the story there was no way a serious ME fan would not buy it in due time. Irritating, but unless it's a big crowd movement hitting their bottom line, the few who won't buy it won't make a dent sufficient enough to force EA to stop. Sony had to get its act together for the PS3 given poor initial sales and it did, EA would need something similar!
