E3 06: MIA @ E3 06

Killzone 2, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Dragon Age, Culdcept, Bully, and first-party GameCube and GBA titles all skipped last week's event.

LOS ANGELES--This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo saw many a headline generated by games that had their first trailers unveiled at the event, such as Halo 3 and Call of Duty 3. Others came from titles whose mere existence was revealed, such as Grand Theft Auto IV. Still more came from the hundreds of games that were playable at the Los Angeles Convention Center, such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii, Warhawk for the PlayStation 3, and Too Human for the Xbox 360.

But for all the games that make appearances at E3, a notable number of titles are newsworthy by virtue of not being at the event. Each year sees a series of highly anticipated titles skip the event, and their absences often speak volumes. Here are a few of the major games GameSpot editors were expecting and/or hoping to see at E3 2006--but didn't.

The PlayStation 3 Killzone sequel: In 2005, the trailer for Sony-owned Dutch developer Guerrilla Games was the talk of the show. Its jaw-dropping graphics became the subject of controversy for being too good, causing many to whisper that they were prerendered. Sony steadfastly denied the accusations, and many E3 2005 attendees were confident that by the time the 2006 expo rolled around, subsequent Killzone 2 footage and/or demos would settle the kerfuffle surrounding the game.

Just one problem: There haven't been any. A year has come and gone, and Sony has kept a shroud of secrecy wrapped tight around the Killzone sequel. It wasn't included in Sony's pre-expo press briefing, it wasn't at any of the 62 PS3 demo stations on the E3 show floor, and it wasn't shown behind closed doors to the press. "I couldn't even get the guy from Guerrilla to say the words 'Killzone 2,'" said one editor.

First-party GameCube and Game Boy Advance games: Though a few third-party publishers had games for the console (Over the Hedge at Activision) and the portable (Atlus' lineup), Nintendo didn't have any demo stations for either platform at its massive booth. That meant that titles such as the new Pokémon Dungeon for the GBA, Super Paper Mario, and, yes, even the GameCube version of the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which caused nerd stampedes the year prior, were nowhere to be found.

In their stead, Nintendo decided to show off its DS and Wii lineup exclusively. However, some E3 attendees noticed that demos for the latter platform were running off of dev kits that included modified GameCubes, which created some confusion.

Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4: Capcom's two most anticipated next-generation games were not present at E3 in any form. The absence of even a frame of footage was particularly glaring, given that trailers for the two games had been shown at Microsoft's X05 event last October and at E3 2005 one year ago.

Half-Life 2: Episode One: Remember when Half-Life 2 was the biggest thing at E3? Times have changed: Even though the episodic expansion is just two weeks away from digital distribution, developer Valve Software decided to skip E3 in any official capacity, though CEO Gabe Newell was seen wandering the show floor outside the Nintendo booth.

Gran Turismo 4 Mobile: Though there were nearly a dozen PS3 demo stations for recently remonikered Gran Turismo HD, the first portable racer from Polyphony Digital was garaged out of sight.

Dragon Age: Role-playing game fans were hoping that BioWare might show off its forthcoming all-original high-fantasy RPG. However, the Canadian developer's focus this year was on Jade Empire for the PC and Mass Effect for the Xbox 360.

Culdcept Saga: On May 1, Namco Bandai made much of the fact that the newest entry into its popular Magic-meets-Monopoly game franchise would be coming to the Xbox 360. However, the first next-gen installment in the series, which has previously appeared on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation, and Dreamcast, couldn't be located at E3 less than a week later.

Starcraft: Ghost: Though it was "indefinitely delayed" on current-gen consoles, many expected Blizzard Entertainment to reveal that the long-in-the-works title would be taking a Perfect Dark Zero-esque roundabout route to next-gen consoles. Guess again--the game was completely missing from the event, further fueling speculation that it has been scrapped in any shape, way, and form.

Rockstar's Untitled Western Shooter for the PS3: When footage from the unnamed third-person six-shooter was included as part of the initial PS3 montage at E3 2005, many expected that a Red Dead Revolver 2 announcement wouldn't be far off. Twelve months later, though, nothing has been heard about the game, and the information well remained bone-dry at E3.

Bully: Though Rockstar eagerly showed off its Xbox 360 Table Tennis game to the press, its controversy-courting high school beat-'em-up called in sick. The game had been announced during E3 2005, but has since come under fire for its depiction of high school brutality, which game-industry gadflies have said could incite real-life violence.

Bethesda, why must you taunt us so?
Bethesda, why must you taunt us so?

Fallout 3: Months prior to the show, Bethesda Softworks said that the third installment of the storied postapocalyptic RPG series would not be on hand at E3. However, that didn't stop the developer-publisher from teasing attendees with a poster, as it did in 2005. This year's one-sheet showed the series' emblematic "Fallout Boy" (called "Action Boy" and "Pip Boy" by some, after the perk and PDA in the game, respectively) superimposed over a faded poster of a happy, 1950s-esque soon-to-be-postnuclear family. "Prepare for the future," read the tagline at the top, further raising expectations of a sequel that crosses the Interplay Fallout games' sly wit and bleak setting with the top-end graphics and free-roaming setting of Bethesda's current bestseller, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

firm3d **I really don't understand the reaction to Killzone 2: a) It doesn't look so stupidly awesome as everyone says (in other words, it doesn't look so good as to be impossible) and b) it DOES look like it could be played that way.** Well it did look good indeed LAST YEAR, especially for what was out at the time..those are things you have to keep in mind. EVERYONE (gamers, journalists, gaming sites, etc) were all WOWED by it. **Let me explain. Opening cut-scene until landing, then you're in control up until the ship crashes, which is a showcase event like when you do a move for the first time in the last Prince of Persia, or something blows up in Enter the Matrix.** Yes it could open up like that, my point was as the camera was in the movie, it definitely could not have been playable. The camera was swinging around so wildly (yes, I know for emotional effect) that as it was it wasn't playable. You are correct a game COULD INDEED open like you stated, but there is a difference in an opening an actual gameplay. **Whether it was pre-rendered or not (I believe it was pre-rendered, but to spec), I think it's possible for PS3 games to look like the Killzone 2 trailer from E3 '05. Something else I believe is that Sony conference started late because they had to drop something big and move everything around. I think Killzone 2 is the easiest candidate and that might also explain why the GT-HD presentation was a lot longer than it needed to be.** I agree and have stated myself it may be "possible" for a PS3 (and probably a 360 game) to look like the trailer, but we have yet to see any games of that graphical quality. We can only hope games get to that quality, but for now it's a waiting game. Once the PS3 is out for a while maybe we'll know more, but I agree with an earlier statement that it may end up looking like I8 (while a fine looking game it is a far cry from the Killzone 2 trailer from E3 2005). In regards to the conference starting late due to something big "being dropped", I have neither heard nor read anything to that effect anywhere. Not saying it isn't true but without proof my opinion is as valid as yours in this matter. My two cents, kevin legionosh@msn.com

With the Killzone 2 controversy at last year's E3, Sony got caught red handed in a bold face lie. Now Sony is wishfully hoping everyone forgets the CG movie they tried to pass of as gameplay, and by not showing or even mentioning KZ2 (their flagship title last year) Sony just looks pathetic. It also was revealed that GT4 was not running on PS3 hardware, but on PC hardware. More and more the difficulties (and costs) for developing on Cell technology are becoming apparent.

blackIceJoe **I believe Killzone was real time and we will see it at the TGS right before the launch of the PS3 that way they can keep all there cards in there hand and Blow people away when they find out it is real. ** Do you seriously beleive it was running in REAL TIME, LAST YEAR? I am not saying future PS3 games (or XBO 360 games for that matter) could look that good, but I doubt in all seriousness that what was running A YEAR AGO was real time game footage. I thought also it posted somewhere that one of the makers of the Killzone 2 CG movie spoke out on it being a CG movie..or am I wrong here? I watched all I could on E3 and as far as I could tell Heavenly Sword looked the best of the playable PS3 games (the one I saw anyway). MGS4 (as always) looked very impressive, but the cutscenes (yes, using the in game engine) in the MGS series usually do. I am sure the gameplay will look about as good but only time will tell. Genji 2 was such a joke...not sure why they gave it a stage presence (probably due to the lack of playable games, I guess?), but that was about as underwhelming as anything I saw from E3. I also only today watched the Motorstorm interview. While the quality of the feed wasn't the best, it was obvious it was so FAR from last years trailer (anyone know if it was CG as well? pretty sure it was myself) that it was sad. Almost as underwhelming as Genji 2. Assassins Creed is supposedly awesome, but with only the CG movie to guide us I am impatient to see even a screenshot. I am very curious about it and I do hope it comes to the 360, but we'll have to wait and see about that. So in closing I am wondering how you can honestly say with a straight face that last years trailer was in real time. My two cents, Kevin legionosh@msn.com P.S. (and yes, MS as well as Nintendo often show CG movies at their press conferences, the difference being they never claim it to be in game footage). If the Halo 3 trailer was indeed in game footage (and not a CG movie) I will be anxiously awaiting Halo 3 for my 360. :-)

Who cares about a Killzone sequel? Have we forgotten that the first one sucked? And those graphics a year ago were pre-rendered--prove it otherwise. Fall Out was the biggest no-show. How many years does this have to go on?

Putting Half Life Episode 1 there would have been a waste of money. Other than that, after WoW I haven't been impressed with Blizzard and RockStar can't make a good game outside of the GTA series.

The thing with Killzone is not only do the environments and models look great, but it's a big map, lots of particle effect and physic all over the place and perfect frame rate. I think the game may look close to that but I have doubts about the frame rate looking that good.

Sony thinks that by omitting Kilzone 2, we would all forget about its graphics. The same thing happened with the game The Getaway when it was first anounced on the PS2.

the games of PS3 shown really don't want to make me buy the console. It's just a minor graphical update and I won't pay that much for it... rather go for wii and xbox360, can have em both for ps3's price... for crying out loud...

I hope some day we get to hear about a Gran Turismo for the PSP that would be some thing neat to see. I really hope Nintendo drops the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Gamecube that way they can make the WII the only one out there. I still wonder why Starcraft: Ghost will not make any more to come out it should just go to the 360 and PS3 now.Plus Blizzard keeps saying we want to give are fans a new Starcraft game and we have not seen one in like ten years and they keep saying it is there biggest franchises. The same with Diablo they keep saying that Starcraft and Diablo are there biggest game but we do not see one. I want to see a new Diablo and Starcraft game soon not in ten or so more years.

LegionOSH, maybe i wasnt clear but i know kz2 was CG and i wasnt comparing kz and GoW, i was just pointing that a game can look better, or not, a long time after it was first showed. and if kz2 actually wont go look like that trailer i just dont care, cause watt im hopping for that game is essencially good fps gameplay not graphics and im not worried that no gameplay of it was showed at this year's E3 cause it will eventually come up. sorry if i wasnt too clear but english is not my main language...

But Killzone 2 was shown last year and was a demo or was played in real time so unless it was cancled I think its under wraps. Valve is always secretive its nothing new mates

"I think the biggest NO-SHOW this year at E306 was IN GAME GRAPHICS on the PS3 that can even COMPETE let alone Look "BETTER" than what the 360 has to offer. Sure, they can show CUTSCENES for MSG4 all they want, where are ANY IN GAME that look better than 360? WHERE? Boomerang Next Gen Controller---LIE! Six USB Ports for PS3---LIE! How many times is Sony Going to Lie about their system before people wake up and realize it is all LIES to keep you interested and away from the REAL NEXT GEN 360! YES IM A FAN BOY SO WHAT? At least Microsoft Brought out what they said they would everytime!" First of all, MGS has never, ever had pre-rendered "cutscenes" in one of their games. Every part of dialogue and "cutscene" is either in the Codec window, or is shown in the same graphics of the game engine. MGS4 is the ingame graphical showing that > 360 (which from what I've seen... seems to only display metallic surfaces excellently, while the character models remain last gen). It's a good thing that they changed the boomerang controller. How many people were complaining about it? They would've lost in sales because of idiots who wouldn't buy it because of how it looked. Six usb ports? Who cares? At least they finally went up to four. These things aren't lies... their system is still in development. You expected no changes to it at all?

Ze_das_coves There is a difference between Gears of War and Killzone 2 : Gears of War : Obliviously actual gameplay footage (apparent from the early framerate dips, etc). Microsoft usually shows GAMEPLAY footage if they say it's GAMEPLAY footage. Killzone 2 : graphics "too good to be true", no slowdown at all, no HUD, the camera couldn't have followed action,etc..Obvious CG movie. Most people can tell a CG movie from gameplay footage, regardless of how good or bad one or the other is. The MAIN difference is that even though it's pretty much common knowledge that while the Killzone 2 footage was CG, Sony CLAIMED it was real time, and as far as I know still claims it this day. THAT is what has everyones panties in a wad. it isn't the point that it "could" look as good as it did, the point is that was NOT actual gameplay footage at the last E3. There is a good chance it could look "as good" as the footage, the point is that actual GAMEPLAY footage was NOT show at the last E3. Since almost everyone on the planet (except you) knows that the Killzone 2 footage from the last E3 was CG, I hope this helps clear the air on this a little. My two cents, Kevin legionosh@msn.com

Yes, that Killzone Trailer was probably not in game but you can't say it can't compete with Halo. you can't say that about any agme especially when Halo 2 sucked so bad. it had the worst storyline since...... oh man the story was that bad! All i'm saying is don't get your pants wet over the Halo 3 trailer because, yes it looks good but, it will probably suck if they don't do anything with the story." The Halo3 footage looked great but it didn't have Mindblowing CG looking Graphics Like Killzone. It has a buzz for just being Halo. Bungie did say that the Trailer was using real-tiome assets so Halo 3 could end up looking like that. Everyone knows Halo 3 doesn't need a CG teaser and has always used ingame graphics for cutscenes and trailers. The same goes with MSG although the first MSG4 trailer looked much better than the second one. If Bungie lies about the Halo graphics, it's gonna sell still. If Killzone 2 is a Lie, there's a high chance it will FLOP!

This is to MGALL80, the reason they didn't show the two Zelda's is because they look too similar. As a matter of fact anything on the Wii looks bad. like two generations ago bad and at its best looks like GC. This is because of the system itself. its definitely the most innovative system but its the least powerful of all three. if you just look at the press conference you can see that not looks spectacular. its mostly all about gameplay. i mean the Wii is only gonna support a resolution of 480p. thats sad because resolution can help a game look that much more better. that is why they didn't have any first party GC games, because they look too similar if not better than the Wii. So sad, but True.

At the very least, it was surprising that no 1st party GC/GBA games were present, I guess Nintendo didnt want to show how similiar in graphics Zelda for GC is to Wii version, plus the Wii version may of been overlooked b/c the GC version would be so much easier to control, but not showing Super Paper Mario seemed weird....not only does that game look awesome but it may actually be better than Galaxy (just blowing smoke out you know where on that one I haven't played either so what the fizz do I know, still surprising though), and on yea I'm sure Killzone2 wasn't there b/c yea what we saw last year was only CG ;). Thereis probably no in game footage that comes close to what they showed, again only speculation.

The launch of the ps2 went the same way with hyped up games not being developed for sometime, however within a year or so Sony started to get an egde with games like MGS2 and GTA3 not to mention DMC and Onimusha. So i guess the same process my happen again for the PS3, ok so Killzone 2 is overhyped to point that it maybe awfull or really good when it comes out, but its just one game out of many that will appear on the system similar to the amount on ps2, which are fun to play and the reason why so many consoles are sold. I think that Sony do love to overhype but who dosn't, that's just part of the sales tactics within the industry. RE5 and DMC4 as well as all other games will be shown later own in thier development life cycle. I think Its great to still be waiting for some info about certain games after E3 anyway, otherwise it'll be information overload.

Looks like Gamespot forgot to add Lost Odyssey to that list. I was really hoping to see more of this game. Maybe at TGS they will show it.

Motorstorm was way weak compared to last years movie, and of course the killzone thing was cg, like, come one. Sony obviously threw a bunch of crap out there last year to save face, and a lot of you are forgetting the numbers for thte hardware, the ps3 isn't 40 times more powerful than the 360 or whatever some of u think. Increased resolution alone is more strain on the system than otherwise, then u want 100 enemies and ultra realistic physics and fire and huge worlds. Dont u think u r expecting a little much?
