E3 06: MIA @ E3 06

Killzone 2, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Dragon Age, Culdcept, Bully, and first-party GameCube and GBA titles all skipped last week's event.

LOS ANGELES--This year's Electronic Entertainment Expo saw many a headline generated by games that had their first trailers unveiled at the event, such as Halo 3 and Call of Duty 3. Others came from titles whose mere existence was revealed, such as Grand Theft Auto IV. Still more came from the hundreds of games that were playable at the Los Angeles Convention Center, such as The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii, Warhawk for the PlayStation 3, and Too Human for the Xbox 360.

But for all the games that make appearances at E3, a notable number of titles are newsworthy by virtue of not being at the event. Each year sees a series of highly anticipated titles skip the event, and their absences often speak volumes. Here are a few of the major games GameSpot editors were expecting and/or hoping to see at E3 2006--but didn't.

The PlayStation 3 Killzone sequel: In 2005, the trailer for Sony-owned Dutch developer Guerrilla Games was the talk of the show. Its jaw-dropping graphics became the subject of controversy for being too good, causing many to whisper that they were prerendered. Sony steadfastly denied the accusations, and many E3 2005 attendees were confident that by the time the 2006 expo rolled around, subsequent Killzone 2 footage and/or demos would settle the kerfuffle surrounding the game.

Just one problem: There haven't been any. A year has come and gone, and Sony has kept a shroud of secrecy wrapped tight around the Killzone sequel. It wasn't included in Sony's pre-expo press briefing, it wasn't at any of the 62 PS3 demo stations on the E3 show floor, and it wasn't shown behind closed doors to the press. "I couldn't even get the guy from Guerrilla to say the words 'Killzone 2,'" said one editor.

First-party GameCube and Game Boy Advance games: Though a few third-party publishers had games for the console (Over the Hedge at Activision) and the portable (Atlus' lineup), Nintendo didn't have any demo stations for either platform at its massive booth. That meant that titles such as the new Pokémon Dungeon for the GBA, Super Paper Mario, and, yes, even the GameCube version of the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, which caused nerd stampedes the year prior, were nowhere to be found.

In their stead, Nintendo decided to show off its DS and Wii lineup exclusively. However, some E3 attendees noticed that demos for the latter platform were running off of dev kits that included modified GameCubes, which created some confusion.

Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4: Capcom's two most anticipated next-generation games were not present at E3 in any form. The absence of even a frame of footage was particularly glaring, given that trailers for the two games had been shown at Microsoft's X05 event last October and at E3 2005 one year ago.

Half-Life 2: Episode One: Remember when Half-Life 2 was the biggest thing at E3? Times have changed: Even though the episodic expansion is just two weeks away from digital distribution, developer Valve Software decided to skip E3 in any official capacity, though CEO Gabe Newell was seen wandering the show floor outside the Nintendo booth.

Gran Turismo 4 Mobile: Though there were nearly a dozen PS3 demo stations for recently remonikered Gran Turismo HD, the first portable racer from Polyphony Digital was garaged out of sight.

Dragon Age: Role-playing game fans were hoping that BioWare might show off its forthcoming all-original high-fantasy RPG. However, the Canadian developer's focus this year was on Jade Empire for the PC and Mass Effect for the Xbox 360.

Culdcept Saga: On May 1, Namco Bandai made much of the fact that the newest entry into its popular Magic-meets-Monopoly game franchise would be coming to the Xbox 360. However, the first next-gen installment in the series, which has previously appeared on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation, and Dreamcast, couldn't be located at E3 less than a week later.

Starcraft: Ghost: Though it was "indefinitely delayed" on current-gen consoles, many expected Blizzard Entertainment to reveal that the long-in-the-works title would be taking a Perfect Dark Zero-esque roundabout route to next-gen consoles. Guess again--the game was completely missing from the event, further fueling speculation that it has been scrapped in any shape, way, and form.

Rockstar's Untitled Western Shooter for the PS3: When footage from the unnamed third-person six-shooter was included as part of the initial PS3 montage at E3 2005, many expected that a Red Dead Revolver 2 announcement wouldn't be far off. Twelve months later, though, nothing has been heard about the game, and the information well remained bone-dry at E3.

Bully: Though Rockstar eagerly showed off its Xbox 360 Table Tennis game to the press, its controversy-courting high school beat-'em-up called in sick. The game had been announced during E3 2005, but has since come under fire for its depiction of high school brutality, which game-industry gadflies have said could incite real-life violence.

Bethesda, why must you taunt us so?
Bethesda, why must you taunt us so?

Fallout 3: Months prior to the show, Bethesda Softworks said that the third installment of the storied postapocalyptic RPG series would not be on hand at E3. However, that didn't stop the developer-publisher from teasing attendees with a poster, as it did in 2005. This year's one-sheet showed the series' emblematic "Fallout Boy" (called "Action Boy" and "Pip Boy" by some, after the perk and PDA in the game, respectively) superimposed over a faded poster of a happy, 1950s-esque soon-to-be-postnuclear family. "Prepare for the future," read the tagline at the top, further raising expectations of a sequel that crosses the Interplay Fallout games' sly wit and bleak setting with the top-end graphics and free-roaming setting of Bethesda's current bestseller, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

i don't think rumble really adds to anything. i honestly can't feel anything when i'm into the game. Sony didn't show anything about their online gaming because it's useless. How are u gonna compete with MS for online play? so Yes, CODEREDFILM, i agree with the online thing. didn't notice it until you mentioned it. Still i think all three of them had great things to show and they also had alot of bad things that they thought were good but actually were not. All consoles are still flawed and there is no clear "frontrunner" in the this new generation of gaming.

Halo3's announcement at E3 was pivotal but not unexpected, and I am happy that Cortana (despite her disposition) looks better with every new step into the franchise. Now I don't want to be offputting to Gamespot in any way, but Valve told everyone 2 weeks prior to E3 it wasn't going to be there! Sometimes finishing a title in time is more important than showing it to fans at an expo, and then wondering why it can't be ready for its official release-date. There is also another game that hasn't been mentioned: Wardevil. That game was at E3 and NOBODY (not even IGN. Gamespot, 1UP, etc) have even bothered talking about it, even though it's a title that rivals the graphics capability of most of the games that were on show and are still 2 years away from their release. Why?

i think the killzone trailer at e3 o5 was a llittle short film sony conjured up. nothing more. why would you sequalize a bomb like killzone anyway. you can add sonys "online service" to the list of no-shows as well. I really think they are sweating bullets right now. Great for Nintendo and MS. Seems this time around sony just ripped a little bit off both of them anyway. They will horribly regret not having rumble in the controllers. I dont think some people realize how much that adds to the game experience. And im not a MS fanboy either. I love the choices.

Killzone was the biggest shock as far as missing the show, IMO.

MercuryFlash Sony obviously knew they couldn't just show another trailer of Killzone....and they knew real footage wouldn't live up to the hype from the last E3, or compete with Halo 3...so they'll keep it hidden so not to destroy the buzz... (select an action below) ______________ Report Abuse To Moderator Posted May 15, 2006 9:13 am PT Um... yeah. so did Halo 3 have real footage? i think that was just a trailer that i saw and no real in game footage. Yes, that Killzone Trailer was probably not in game but you can't say it can't compete with Halo. you can't say that about any agme especially when Halo 2 sucked so bad. it had the worst storyline since...... oh man the story was that bad! All i'm saying is don't get your pants wet over the Halo 3 trailer because, yes it looks good but, it will probably suck if they don't do anything with the story.

I think the biggest NO-SHOW this year at E306 was IN GAME GRAPHICS on the PS3 that can even COMPETE let alone Look "BETTER" than what the 360 has to offer. Sure, they can show CUTSCENES for MSG4 all they want, where are ANY IN GAME that look better than 360? WHERE? Other NO Shows: Sony 1080p dual screen output---LIE! Three Ethernet Ports for PS3---LIE! Boomerang Next Gen Controller---LIE! Six USB Ports for PS3---LIE! How many times is Sony Going to Lie about their system before people wake up and realize it is all LIES to keep you interested and away from the REAL NEXT GEN 360! YES IM A FAN BOY SO WHAT? At least Microsoft Brought out what they said they would everytime! What about Shenmue Online for PC as a no show? Has anyone metioned this?

FIJIDAWG: "There is only so much time for everything, I bet you will see more info on things after the show buzz calms down and it will get more attention. Also some people just can not be ready for a show when they are hard at work on games. Everyone knows Resident Evil 5 will sell itself." Then why is their so much footage of MGS4, everybody knows that game is going to sell itself as well. I think Capcom probably has somthing big planned for TGS. plus lets hope that they end up putting RE5 on just one platform (Preferably and most likely the PS3). exclusives tend to turn out as better games in the end anyways, lets not turn RE into to a mediocore multiplat.

What about Animal Crossing for the Wii? They've GOT to have something on it by now, even if it's a 10 second trailer! Oh well, hopefully @ TGS in September we'll hear something about that title.

Capcom probably didn't want to show any RE5 for the reason that they may change the premise of the game like they did for RE4 a few times before we played the final product. The RE4 video that they had originally showed at the E3 of 02 was a far cry from what the final game was. Safer than sorry I guess.

I'm glad somebody finally said something about Bully not being at E3. I'm going to be so pissed if that game gets cancelled. Come on Rockstar don't give in to the pressure now. You owe everything to controversy, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

I think they are still working on those titles; RE5, DMC 4 and Killzone 2. Those are the big key titles from those two companies. Let's just wait and see in the future what news they bring.

I'd go with a misleading big name video game front runner that is scared to death of the 360 surpassing them, so they resort to lies and deception to keep the masses at bay. Which is only gonna work for so long.

I have heard somewhere that the Killzone trailer last year was a video showing what the guerrila team hope the game will look like so stop trashing sony cause of that. and they were also ocupied with the kz for psp so they problaby didnt have much too show these year and didnt want to dissapoint fans. and i cant understand why people cant believe that the graphics could look that way since a lot of ohter games showed good graphics too. i didnt believe in the blood efects of gears of war screenshots but when i see in game fooage this year it blow me off.

Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry 4, and Fallout 3 were games I was looking forward to seeing at this years E3. The developers obviously didn't have anything playable to show to us consumers. It's disappointing, but it happens.

KillZone2 trailer was CG. Game didn't exist at that point and is now in early development. Hence its absence. And when they will show it, it will be similar to I8, forget the E3 2005 trailer. Look at what Motorstorm ended up looking like, Killzone2 will be the same

R* generally does not need to generate hype with E3. That is why Bully and the untitled western shooter were not there. Table Tenis was because that game will need hype to sell it. San Andreas was not at E3 05 and Vicy Cit was only anounced at E3 02 with no screen shots or videos. I am not suprised to see Bully and the untitled western shooter not at E3.

The first Killzone trailer was a video showing what the game will look like on the PS3. They probably just recently started actual development of the game when that trailer came out last year. It wasn't at this E3 because they don't have enough done to make a demo yet. MARK MY WORDS. It will be playable at E3 07 and will look very close to the trailer. It will probably be released late 07-early 08

Sony is a bunch of retards. Their omission of Killzone proves to the world that they lied at E3 05 and they can't back their storys up. I can't understand why any one would believe that that Killzone movie they showed last year was real time. The burden of proof is on Sony to prove to the world that they tell the truth and they didn't. They are a bunch of liars and I hope their console fails.

The fact that nothing on Killzone 2 was shown this year at E3 after the way they used that prerendered footage as a centerpiece last year is all the proof you need. You would have to be pretty dense not to make that connection. My 9 year old daughter could make it.

E3 seemed quiet in general this year. Despite two new consoles and plenty of games I'm interested in, there really didn't seem to be much of a 'wow' factor for me this time. Even the big announcements like GTA4, Halo 3 and FFXIII were hardly surprises, were they?
