E3 2017: Destiny 2 On Xbox One X Runs At 30 FPS, Just Like PS4 Pro

It won't be 60 FPS, as it can on PC.

Destiny 2 will not run at 60 FPS even on Xbox One X, leaving the PC version as the only one to make that possible. Game director Luke Smith confirmed the game runs at 30 FPS on Xbox One X at E3 this week when he appeared on Geoff Keighley's show to reveal some technical detail. 30 FPS is the same frame rate as Destiny 2 on PS4 Pro.

Some thought Destiny 2 might run at a higher frame rate on Xbox One X because the console is more powerful than PS4 Pro, but that's not going to be the case, it seems. One possibility is that Bungie wanted to keep the frame rate the same on platforms to ensure the experience is as close to the same as possible--a subject Phil Spencer discussed with us at E3. "30 frames per second on all consoles," Smith said. The PC edition of Destiny 2, meanwhile, has an uncapped frame rate and other PC-specific features.

Now Playing: Destiny 2 Darkest Hour Story Trailer - E3 2017

In other Destiny 2 news, the game's beta trial dates have been revealed, with Activision confirming that pre-order customers will be able to play the beta on PlayStation 4 starting July 18, and on Xbox One beginning July 19. The beta will end on both platforms on July 23. The company also stated that a PC beta is planned for late August, with more details coming "soon."

Additionally, Destiny 2's release date has been moved up slightly, now launching on September 6, while the PC version will launch on October 24. You can read a lot more about Destiny 2 from its official reveal, including about how it's adding the ability for solo players to find groups to play Raids with. At its E3 2017 press conference, Sony also showed a cinematic trailer that suggested a strong story focus for the game.

As for Xbox One X, the more powerful console launches on November 7, priced at $500. A number of analysts believe that price point is too high.

The Sony fan boys here are hilarious, I haven't been on the GS comments section for a while and this is basically why... Fan boy wars (So F'ing pathetic). Anyway MS are bringing native 4K to the masses. $499 to do native 4k is amazing. If you want to go the PC route it'll cost you $1500.

Can assure you most gamers I know personally are going to buy this day 1. Including me.

@lucienbry: PS4 Pro also does native 4k. It's not like every game on X will be native. Look at the list already being made with 5 months to go before launch. They are both 4k system, but the X will be able to do it more often. It's kinda like how the S is a 1080p system... Most games aren't 1080p. PS4 is also a 1080p system... Most games are 1080p.

@tjkraz: Performance wise? 4k/30fps/medium settings, About $700. Today. Once volta releases even less. Even cheaper if you start including rebates or finding used parts.

@fedor: Doubtful. Start with 12gb DDR4 ram (ddr5 not even available yet), hard drive, controller, motherboard, OS, water cooled case and 4K drive. That's $500 right there. What GPU and CPU are you putting it that will do 4K for $200-ish?

@tjkraz: So you don't know shit about PC is what you're saying. Ddr4 is system ram, ddr5 is vram. Vram comes with the GPU you purchase.... Any cheap micro ATX board will suffice. HDD are cheap, don't need water cooling, the apu in the XoX is basically a mobile chip beaten by decade old cpus. Rx 580 which is stronger than what's in the XoX is $200... 4k drive means nothing to a PC gamer... We are talking about gaming performance, not watching shitty movies. Should I go on? Basically, go away, pleb.

@fedor: Ummm...Xbox One X is powered by 12 GB of DDR5 system ram. Yes...ddr5. The number after 4, which is coming to PCs in 2018. But why bother knowing what you're talking about. Go play with your used parts and tell us how paying for windows is for suckers.

I'm done.

@tjkraz: You missed a letter, it's GDDR5, which is based off of DDR3. Which is what the PS4 has been using since launch. Xbox launched with DDR3 and has only now made the switch. But like you said, why bother knowing what you're talking about.....

@tjkraz: "Start with 12gb DDR4 ram (ddr5 not even available yet)"... Your way off with your RAM numbers. Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't DDR4 RAM more expensive and much better for gaming? Just because 5 is a bigger number doesn't mean it's better.

@joshrmeyer: He was talking about ddr5, which is system ram for pc that is unreleased and not in the XoX. The XoX uses gddr5 which is vram. The consoles opt to use it as shared system ram.

@tjkraz: Lol, yea I know it is... And it will literally make no gaming difference. You could use ddr3 and still out perform the XoX. Anyways, its already on PC in the first place, you know, on the GPU. I mean do you want me to go into hbm 2? Or gddr6? You're a fool, have a good day.

Oh yea, just remembered. It's gddr5 in the XoX, not ddr5. They are actually two different things. You're still a fool, have a good day.

i don't know why people are so angry. So many people on this website (including myself) have been saying it will be hard for this machine to run games at 4k 60 (fortza is a race car game stop). I have a Gtx 1080 and there are times my card dips. It is a powerful machine at a decent price, and i hope everyone that gets one enjoys it. Whats going to happen if some of the upcoming first party games don't hit that mark?

@oo7superdave: THIS, most of the people in this thread have no clue what it takes even a pc to run 4k at 60fps. My system is an i7 7700k, 16GB 3200 Ram, GTX 1080 running fulls SSDs. Many games I can NOT keep a constant 60fps at 4k unless I cut graphics quality down some. I cant imagine what corners the XoX is going to be cutting to get the few games it does run at 4k 60fps to reach that.

Thanks Gamespot, now I am certainly not going to buy the X1X. I can already do 4K at 30-40 fps on my GTX 980 powered rig. Plus, I have PS4 and X1 (Vanilla) for my exclusives at 1080p and 900/1080p respectively. If I lower my PC gaming resolution from 4K to 1440p or 1080p, I can easily hit the sweet spot of 50-60 fps in almost all games in High-Ultra settings. So why would I buy this new hardware that Microsoft is hopelessly pushing ? Just for the 4K experience ? Hmm.. something that is still very much a niche market !! No thank you. Plus, the games showed by Microsoft aren't impressive except Forza 7 which I will get for my regular X1. Sony's games are much interesting even though their conference s**ked.

Journalism 101 for Gamespot staffers: analyze the information you're given on the fly and ask proper follow up questions. "Specs show that the Xbox One X is superior to the PlayStation 4 Pro so *WHY* the identical frame rate on both?"

Misleading title. I wouldn't assume Xbox 1X would have been able to pull off Destiny 2 with 60fps @ 4K. Games are often capped at 30fps to ensure consistency. Media just stirring the pot.

@zero_dawn: You forgot this part: "We've got access to a pristine 4K source file of the gameplay segment, and even under close scrutiny, Origins holds up admirably."

And this part: "Image integrity is solid, with just minor artefacts around fast-moving objects - easy for us to see on still shots blown up to 300 per cent, but virtually impossible to detect in gameplay on a 4K TV."

X1X has the resources to do 4K. Developers chose to sacrifice that to add other effects, textures, draw distance, etc. It's their call.

@sladakrobot: It was actually that female boss lady that said that... And it was a horrible promise to make. Certain games like Halo don't need to be native 4k, but they do need to be 60fps. Sacrifices are going to have to be made or the use or dynamic resolution like Halo 5 did.... Maybe that counts as native 4k(while you're standing still lol)

@zero_dawn: Well to be fair Phil said its up to Devs how they wan to utilize the extra power. And according to digital foundry the Assassins Creed engine is apparently a 900P engine. I did not know that but thats what they said. Then again Assassins Creed on PC can be played at 1440P and up I am sure.

My guess is if the X/Pro versions were at 60fps they would have an unfair advantage online against gamers playing on One/PS4 versions of the game.
