E3 2017: Destiny 2 On Xbox One X Runs At 30 FPS, Just Like PS4 Pro

It won't be 60 FPS, as it can on PC.

Destiny 2 will not run at 60 FPS even on Xbox One X, leaving the PC version as the only one to make that possible. Game director Luke Smith confirmed the game runs at 30 FPS on Xbox One X at E3 this week when he appeared on Geoff Keighley's show to reveal some technical detail. 30 FPS is the same frame rate as Destiny 2 on PS4 Pro.

Some thought Destiny 2 might run at a higher frame rate on Xbox One X because the console is more powerful than PS4 Pro, but that's not going to be the case, it seems. One possibility is that Bungie wanted to keep the frame rate the same on platforms to ensure the experience is as close to the same as possible--a subject Phil Spencer discussed with us at E3. "30 frames per second on all consoles," Smith said. The PC edition of Destiny 2, meanwhile, has an uncapped frame rate and other PC-specific features.

Now Playing: Destiny 2 Darkest Hour Story Trailer - E3 2017

In other Destiny 2 news, the game's beta trial dates have been revealed, with Activision confirming that pre-order customers will be able to play the beta on PlayStation 4 starting July 18, and on Xbox One beginning July 19. The beta will end on both platforms on July 23. The company also stated that a PC beta is planned for late August, with more details coming "soon."

Additionally, Destiny 2's release date has been moved up slightly, now launching on September 6, while the PC version will launch on October 24. You can read a lot more about Destiny 2 from its official reveal, including about how it's adding the ability for solo players to find groups to play Raids with. At its E3 2017 press conference, Sony also showed a cinematic trailer that suggested a strong story focus for the game.

As for Xbox One X, the more powerful console launches on November 7, priced at $500. A number of analysts believe that price point is too high.

The CPU in the Xbox One X is FAR from just an overclock. Which is what people seem to keep wanting to point out as the reason why the game is going to be running at 30FPS. It is a complete revision of the Jaguar architecture. To the point that they had to rename the CPU " Custom Jaguar evolved x86 ". The CPU has newer instruction sets which was stated in the Digital Foundry videos, it benefits a great deal from Direct X 12 being implemented directly into the GPU, a faster memory bus/bit rate vastly improves system communication between the hardware & a beefier GPU gives it more breathing room. Going by reports of other far better looking games at E3 running at 4K/60 FPS, no one is going to buy the excuse that the CPU was too weak to push 4K 60FPS. Destiny 2 is not setting any graphical milestones. If they really go through with locking the Xbox One X version of the game at 30FPS, that will give the system even more headroom to work with in the graphics department. It should look many levels better than the PS4 Pro version if that is the case. If it doesn't look any better than the PS4 Pro version, then that will confirm that the game was held back on purpose.

@LatinLegacy: What other better looking games were running at 4k/60? Forza 7 is the only one that comes to mind and that's a racing sim, not an open world game.

@LatinLegacy: Exactly, the engineering that went into the console is miles ahead of the pro. "We have this developer tool called PIX [Performance Investigator for Xbox]. It lets us do some GPU trace capture. He and his team did a really deep analysis across a breadth of titles with the goal that any 900p or better title would be able to easily run at frame-rate at 4K on Scorpio. That was our big stake in the ground, and so with that we began our work speccing out what the Scorpio Engine is. It's not a process of calling up AMD and saying I'll take this part, this part and this part. A lot of really specific custom work went into this."

And yet the only thing people see is GPU is 6TF. But don't mention the enhancements made to the GPU. I can't but laugh at people comparing the GPU to anything you can buy in a store.

@LatinLegacy: E3 games are often run on top tier PC's, so yes, it's very reasonable to assume the Kix just flat out can't run the game beyond 30fps. Even most top tier PC's can't reliably run 60fps in 4K at Ultra, and that's with $500+ GPUs. Heck, they usually have to crossfire them. Do you actually think they put a $500 GPU into the Kix? Fark no.

@Barighm: That is why i just said 4K/60 FPS. I already know that most games will not run on the platform at Native 4K/60FPS. Even with how well built the system is, the CPU will hold it back & the GPU simply does not have enough horsepower to drive that many pixels on graphically demanding games. So technologies such as checkerboarding will very much be a factor. Obviously, Bungie will be using techniques to make the game feel like it's a Native 4K game. Especially on the PS4 Pro where it is more needed than the Xbox One X. When that is the case, the hardware is being taxed a lot less compared to if the game was running native at 4K. This is why some people will have a hard time believing that the game could not accomplish 60FPS on the Xbox One X. Although they never said it couldn't like they did with the PS4 Pro so that will always be a matter of opinion. I will say this though, if the game does not look a good deal better on the Xbox One X than it does on the PS4 Pro, then we can all pretty much confirm that the game was indeed held back on purpose to honor the contract they have with Sony. The Xbox One X might be lacking in the CPU department but it damn well makes up for it with the GPU.

Of course it is man lol, shit is not worth $500 right now, without the proper exclusives we gonna see most of the multiplats ending up just like this.

Well that's BS right there. We all know XBOX is perfectly capable of running this game at 60FPS. It has to be down to a parity clause that sony have in place. Well that's my guess anyway.?✌

@gamerbum: Only one game shown at microsoft's show was touted as 60fps and that was Forza. The rest of the games only mentioned the 4k aspect... There's a reason for that.

They could if they wanted to...there are for sure ways to reach 60fps...like it must not run on native 4k.

But on other hand, its mainly a PvE game, right?

@sladakrobot: Destiny was advertised as a mmo for some reason lol, which it isn't. But it's definitely a multiplayer game. It's pretty boring playing single player.

@sladakrobot: They're heavily advertising the multiplayer too. It's definitely a major component and pretty much the only reason why I play the game.

Sony in their contract with Bungie made sure it didn't look or run better on the One X.

@rasterror: Did Microsoft have a contract to make Destiny 1 not look or run any better than the Xbox One version? CoD ghosts was running at 1080p on PS4 and 720p on Xbox One... Same kind of game at about the same time period. They dumbed down the graphics on the PS4 to match Xbox Ones... They've even admitted it if you Google it. It has nothing to do with any contract.

the xbox one X has only 33% more gpu power, when you want to double the framerate you need to double the gpu power

same goes for the cpu where the difference is even smaller

It was pretty obvious. I am pretty sure multiplatform games won't even look better on Xbox One X, they will look the same as the Pro and run at 30fps too.

No point in making any effort on the Pro because the PS4 is selling more and there is no point to make any effort on the Xbox One X because not only it will sell less than the Pro, but both the PS4 and Xbox One will outsell it as well.

The only purpose of those 2 consoles is exclusives and so far, Forza 7 doesn't look any better than GT Sports.

@hotgamer: To be fair, the Kix will likely be able to hold a much more stable 30fps than the Pro. I never said the Kix can't do 4k/30fps well.

The developers already explained that it would only be 30fps on the ps4 pro because of a cpu bottleneck. The xbox one x has a marginally faster cpu 2.3 ghz vs 2.1 on the pro so obviously that small bump in frequency wouldnt allow it to hit 60fps either.

@Eddie619: i dont know why they chose to short on the cpu, they said it was a premium console, so make it premium....im sure people would have paid an extra hundred to get a 1600 in their console. i would. but in terms of vega, that would have made the system borderline pointless, for the same price you could build a sff that crushes xboXX
