E3 2017: Destiny 2 On Xbox One X Runs At 30 FPS, Just Like PS4 Pro

It won't be 60 FPS, as it can on PC.

680 Comments

Destiny 2 will not run at 60 FPS even on Xbox One X, leaving the PC version as the only one to make that possible. Game director Luke Smith confirmed the game runs at 30 FPS on Xbox One X at E3 this week when he appeared on Geoff Keighley's show to reveal some technical detail. 30 FPS is the same frame rate as Destiny 2 on PS4 Pro.

Some thought Destiny 2 might run at a higher frame rate on Xbox One X because the console is more powerful than PS4 Pro, but that's not going to be the case, it seems. One possibility is that Bungie wanted to keep the frame rate the same on platforms to ensure the experience is as close to the same as possible--a subject Phil Spencer discussed with us at E3. "30 frames per second on all consoles," Smith said. The PC edition of Destiny 2, meanwhile, has an uncapped frame rate and other PC-specific features.

Now Playing: Destiny 2 Darkest Hour Story Trailer - E3 2017

In other Destiny 2 news, the game's beta trial dates have been revealed, with Activision confirming that pre-order customers will be able to play the beta on PlayStation 4 starting July 18, and on Xbox One beginning July 19. The beta will end on both platforms on July 23. The company also stated that a PC beta is planned for late August, with more details coming "soon."

Additionally, Destiny 2's release date has been moved up slightly, now launching on September 6, while the PC version will launch on October 24. You can read a lot more about Destiny 2 from its official reveal, including about how it's adding the ability for solo players to find groups to play Raids with. At its E3 2017 press conference, Sony also showed a cinematic trailer that suggested a strong story focus for the game.

As for Xbox One X, the more powerful console launches on November 7, priced at $500. A number of analysts believe that price point is too high.

Is anybody really surprised by this? Bungie has hated MS since they left. Its no telling how much Sony is paying them to keep it like this. But that was an issue when Microsoft was doing the parity clauses. but now it seems its ok for Sony.

@spartanx169x:

Not sure if they hate MS. Remember, they offered MS the exclusive content deal first and were turned down. Or maybe that's why they would dislike them now.

@pcps4xb: then why tf is it 30 on PS pro!??? The reason bungie gave for that is is that the pro is simply not powerful enough! But the reason for the Xbox one X is because they want it to look the same across all consoles? I'm done with bungie where is anthem at f all of this Sony bs.

@nativepixel: notice I said "IF". I disagree with all this nonsense. It's 30 on pro because the CPU can't handle 60. Xbox is already getting the higher resolution so Im sure they would have done 60 if it was possible. You cant get double the resolution and Double the frame rate. It's not that much more powerful. Please tell me why gears 4 won't get 60fps on campaign like it did on PC?

@nativepixel:

You can't have the regular X1 be at 30 fps and the X at 60fps.

@xboxonex: A true native 4K 60 machine? Your just the kind of consumer Microsoft wants- somebody who will believe everything they say, and buy everything they want you to. Its not just Microsoft though.

Fact is, the GPU is essentially in the mid power range of a GTX 1060 or a RX 580- probably closer to the performance of a 580 due to the 8GB of RAM that card has. A couple of years back this kind of power would be found with a GTX 980 or an R9 390X.

I can tell you for a fact, as someone who has owned at least two of the cards I mention above (I now employ multi GPU), that if you think your going to get 4K 60 for anything, but, perhaps, MS in house titles that don't require too much performance (or indy games)- your fooling your self. These cards can barely push 4K 30 with most titles- and to get the 30FPS you'd have too be running medium to medium-high settings (depending on the game) with most effects off or lowered. Anisotropic Filtering, which XB1X supports, does not use a lot of resources, however.

Another, hit would be the CPU, which I'm taking a wait and see approach for. The memory controller they built into it which is supposed to limit many instructions to only a few, will be a feature to make up for the shorts falls of the CPU- which is essentially within the power range of an Intel I3. This feature will undoubtedly be what allows MS to run their in-house games at 4K 60 since they will continue to heavily utilize another of their products with their games- DirectX12- as the API. This box and DX12 were made for each other.

The XB1X is essentially a mid-lo to mid range gaming pc (though, for me to be comfortable calling it mid range I would have liked to have seen a better CPU and more RAM). Though, as a console, it is quite a specimen. Also, while software optimization will also play a role in how well the box performs outside its ranking- do not be fooled by anyone telling you this is a 4K 60 machine though and through- there's no way in hell. MS is full of shyte and they're deliberately going after the technologically ignorant mainstream (not hardcore enthusiasts like they say) with these half truths.

@xboxonex: Not everyone is out to "cut" them down. Some would just like to know what the extra $100 they're being asked to spend is gonna actually do for them. The first big AAA cross platform games to launch around the X are no different than any other console version. It isn't for the 4K Blu-ray player, you can buy a One S for that. Assassins Creed Origins is running a dynamic 4K resolution on all platforms. Don't forget that Origins was premiered at the MS conference, so they're not in Sony's pocket.

@xboxonex: with an extra 1.8 teraflops you're not going to get double the resolution and double the frame rate. The games that will hit 4K 60fps will be the less demanding ones. If that was the case gears 4 would get 4K at 60 fps on both campaign and online.

@xboxonex: Why waste time typing all that crap, the new xbox is not capable of 4k 60fps if its a demanding game like destiny, you are a victim of microsft hype because they want you to spend $500 for nothing, learn tech before you run your mouth

@IndySandbagTrik: Guess they also forgot about the PC version which will run 4K @ 60fps. If people absolutely have to have it in 4K 60 they're gonna go PC. Otherwise just get the version your friends are on and move on.

And I'm willing to bet that it is MS keeping Bungie quiet on the reason. If it was Sony, they'd be pushing harder for the reasons why to be out. At this point it wouldn't matter what it looks like, people will blame Sony whether it is true or not.

@xboxonex: if that's the case then why do the 1sy party exclusives still look graphically worse than PlayStations? Why does crackdown now look worse? This console is going to be great but some people are just blowing it out of proportion.

You can tell that Sony payed Bungie to keep the Xbox One X version from being better than the PS4 Pro version.

The next generation of consoles better have 60fps as minimum, don't want another mid/upgrade consoles being held back because of parity.

@omegazeda: To be fair, 90's games were either 50FPS or 60 FPS (depending on PAL or NTSC) as game performance was typically tied to the screens refresh rate in those days.

@IndySandbagTrik: I did not see the trailer from last night. But the gameplay they showed a week or two ago look identical to Destiny 1 in terms of graphics. But last nights may have looked different.

Edit: I just saw the trailer from last night. Nothing looks improved. not to mention in all likelihood what you have seen in both instances were from the PC version. Everybody knows they run these gameplayer trailers on PC knowing they will look better than the console versions. But again, I'm not saying they are bad per say. But it certainly is nothing to get excited about either. Nobody will be playing Destiny 2 for its visuals.

I've said from the start the One X will struggle, it will have too small a market share to justify third party devs doing anything for it.

It's going to be pretty rehashes of Forza, Halo, Gears...rinse repeat.

@kyelo: What extra work are devs needing to do? They are already doing the work for PC's, it should be relatively simple to select a different graphics preset for the 1X compared to the Pro.

I know its probably more complicated than this, I'm just highlighting that devs won't need to do anything for the 1X that they are not already doing for PC's.
