Elder Scrolls Online confirmed for 2013

Skyrim fans yearning to explore the game's fantasy world with other people will get the chance next year, as Bethesda Softworks today announced The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game take on the long-running series, set for release in 2013.

Bethesda didn't reveal any gameplay details, but a Game Informer tease for the magazine's cover story on Elder Scrolls Online revealed that the game will cover the entire continent of Tamriel, including the lands featured in previous Elder Scrolls games like Cyrodiil, Skyrim, and Morrowind. The game will be set 1,000 years before the events of last year's hit Skyrim and will put players into the world on the brink of demonic assimilation at the hands of the daedric prince Molag Bal.

Elder Scrolls Online will also feature three player factions, though they were not detailed. However, a rumor that made the rounds in March and correctly predicted the game's announcement suggested that they will be represented by animals: a lion, a dragon, and an unspecified bird of prey.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be the debut game from Zenimax Online Studios, which was established five years ago with Mythic Entertainment cofounder Matt Firor (Dark Age of Camelot) heading up the operation. Firor is also serving as game director on the project.

LOLOLOLOL years ago i said that the mmo being worked on was going to be an elder scrolls game and that it would take place in the past so it has nothing to do with the main games. i was laughed at in the nexus sites.

@hector530 The geniuses get laughed at by the dumb ones. But once what they claim, happens, the dumb ones are the first to say "I AM GONNA FOLLOW THAT GUY EVERYWHERE!!! I SAID THIS AND IT HAS HAPPENED!". Lol. Ironic, no?! :P

Anyways, I will be watching this game closely. Probably won't play it, but I love the Elder Scrolls world. A game that lets me explore the whole continent would be awesome. I am always disappointed about the invisible walls in Elder Scrolls. I want to just continue on and see everything in the world.

Why does Gamespot ( or Bethesda, I guess...) specify that it's 1,000 years before the events in Skyrim? this would also before the events in Oblivion, and I'm pretty sure Morrowind as well. Why couldn't they just say it predates all events in previous Elderscrolls games?

My only thought is that if they do continue to make stand alone ES games they won't be as deep as Skyrim cause the team will have to be split between taking care of the MMO and making the new game.

@Lord_Sesshy @Bartz77 The MMO will be developed by a different studio so in theory it shouldn't affect the standalone TES games.

However I doubt bethesda will make a new TES game when people are still playing the TES MMO as to not halve sales on both ends
