Elder Scrolls Online confirmed for 2013

Massively multiplayer take on open-world RPG series to be set 1,000 years before Skyrim in a Tamriel endangered by daedric prince Molag Bal.

Skyrim fans yearning to explore the game's fantasy world with other people will get the chance next year, as Bethesda Softworks today announced The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game take on the long-running series, set for release in 2013.

The Elder Scrolls is finally going online.
The Elder Scrolls is finally going online.

Bethesda didn't reveal any gameplay details, but a Game Informer tease for the magazine's cover story on Elder Scrolls Online revealed that the game will cover the entire continent of Tamriel, including the lands featured in previous Elder Scrolls games like Cyrodiil, Skyrim, and Morrowind. The game will be set 1,000 years before the events of last year's hit Skyrim and will put players into the world on the brink of demonic assimilation at the hands of the daedric prince Molag Bal.

Elder Scrolls Online will also feature three player factions, though they were not detailed. However, a rumor that made the rounds in March and correctly predicted the game's announcement suggested that they will be represented by animals: a lion, a dragon, and an unspecified bird of prey.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be the debut game from Zenimax Online Studios, which was established five years ago with Mythic Entertainment cofounder Matt Firor (Dark Age of Camelot) heading up the operation. Firor is also serving as game director on the project.

I would have been fine just allowing us to have co-op. But if they can just take everything about TES and put it online, it might not be so bad if it's structured sort of how Guild Wars was. Everyone running around town, but only yourself or a party of friends roaming around the world, undisturbed.

Not a bad idea, but I'd still prefer cooperative, four-player, splitscreen multiplayer. Games are more fun with your friends in the room, I think.

@Richardthe3rd

Agreed. Unfortunately, some people need multiplayer. I am not one of them.

@KingofCabal

I think they will lose a lot of dedicated fans if they ditch standalone single player experiences. What made Skyrim so great was that no two people could have the same experience. I think with an MMO they will have to 'generalize' (if you will) the story and more people will have a normalized experience.

However, I do see what they are doing, they are going to try and increase revenue through micro-transactions and who knows a monthly or yearly subscription (to maintain servers and provide updates.

I'm worried, I won't lie. Look what happened to Warcraft. WoW comes out and is extremely successful and all development of the Warcraft series is halted and all attention is focused on the MMO. I do NOT want to see that happen here. I can only hope ZeniMax is aware of this and is planning accordingly.

Wonder where the 1000 years before skyrim fits into the timeline. Is it before the events in morrowind and daggerfall?

@sonicare you're looking at during the late first or early 2nd Era. Arena, the first Elder Scrolls game from back in the 90's took place in the late 3rd Era and all games since then have taken place later and later into the 3rd Era until we see the 4th Era in Skyrim. Just to give you an idea.

Hopefully it turns out good.. I mean the population will be crazy since Elder Scrolls has such a large fan base. So I hope that the amount of people doesn't ruin the experience of the game. I've never really thought of Elder Scrolls as anything but a single player game..

This could go one of two ways:

Star wars where once you hit the max level, you end up dead in the water through boredom.

or

WoW where its played by millions week in week out,

I hope its the latter.....

@gouldy98 I personally hope, neither and hope they surpase both, but I won't expect too much from them. Been playing elder scrolls since the beginning, but I worry they're just going to try milking the franchise rather than put out an amazing game. Seems like the current trend: mass effect, starwars, warhammer, blizzard IP's etc

Dont really care as long as they continue making standalone games also which follow from Skyrim, if they ditch the standalone games for MMO then they can burn in hell.

I really don't think this is a good idea.

Elder scrolls has made a name for itself as a single player RPG. It doesn't need an identity crisis.

If this Series will be ruined as well, i might as well stop gaming once and for all and leave the seats for the younger generation.

What will we be fighting with? Sticks and rocks?!

I'm all for a decent story, but have the people of Skyrim not evolved all that much then :|

Am I the only one who see this as a bad sign for PC games. This announcement convinced me that PC games, ten years from now, will only be Indie or Massive Multiplayer games. The lone gamer will be a peripheral, bizzare (thogh evangarde) phenomenon in this grim future while the average PC gamer will be a milking cow for the industry. Damn you consoles! Damn you Gaming industry! you've lost your chance to become more than money producing enterprise. You could becomce the next frontier for the Public Sphere with thousands of scholars worshiping you and studying you but no you chose the dark side of capitalism. And I can't feel that the average (illeagel downloading) gamer is free from blame.

Details have already been leaking about this MMO around the net. Just google it. Here's a link to the bulk of the details...

It's basically a WoW clone using the same engine as SWToR. Read it and weep. :/

As long as they keep making single player versions of the game I don't care what they do with an MMO.

smh.... they always swore TES would stay single player games. We all knew this would come at some point. I dread running around Tamriel w/ a chat window and "QQ, you got pwnd" crap ruining my experience. Not too excited by this idea.

What worries me most about this isn't the idea of an Elder Scrrolls MMO, it's that they will make it exactly the damn same as all the other MMOs out there. We'll be lucky if we see 1st person, for a start, as they will no doubt go for toolbar clicking monotony. "3 factions", yeah that hasnt been done before, ever. And 1000 years before? TOR anyone?Look at how amazing they could make this, if they kept the game exactly like it is in Skyrim, but just let thousands of players explore the same world. But they wont.

-____-, The Elder Scrolls was something special, the one game where you could pour hours into alone and immersed in it's expansive lore and detail just like a good book. Shaping the world yourself, changing it, absorbing it by yourself and nobody else was trademark for the Elder Scrolls. Now it seems every bloody decent RPG apparently needs to be an MMO, which destroys them by adding the online community, destroying the single experience they were trademarked for. I knew it would come to this, deep down, but it's sad it's true, Elder Scrolls will just be another series that sold out.Gone are the days of Cyrodill, Morrowind, Hammerfell and Skyrim, and paying no monthly fee.See you later Elder Scrolls :|

As long as it does something new and original and doesn't resemble WoW in the slightest, then I'll consider this.

Still hope its for all platforms... I do play pc games but I hate the platform because its good way to waste money. You have a good rig one months then the next you have to shell out hundreds of pounds for a new graphics card... I can't afford that to play my favorite series, not when there are real world things I wanna acheive.

Lol, 2013? Never gonna happen. Also I don't think I've seen Beth release a game that was balanced enough to be an MMO EVER. They'd better be ready to do the impossible on their part. GL Bethesda, we have faith in you.

Everyone. Can I please have your attention please?! I have to make a confession. I have NEVER bought a genuine game copy. Sorry, everyone. But I assure you that if I am alive by the time this game hits the shelves, and its half as good as promised and equally good as that stupid overrated WOW, then I WILL BUY IT AND EVEN PAY MONTHLY/YEARLY FEE FOR IT!!!

PS. Why I compare it with WOW? Because at least millions of people play it. Though I hate it, but I'd play it if it was titled "The Elder Scrolls", that's my love for the franchise.

Lets all hope and pray that this comes out to be the BEST MMORPG EVER CREATED IN THE HISTORY OF MAN KIND!!! Ameen!

Why nowadays every game have to be multiplayer? What about single players? I am a really big fan of TES series, but I won't purchase an MMO version, as it becomes so desequilibrated with the time. I like to enjoy their world on my own, not caring about raid dungeons whenerver other people wants, for exemple.

Well, I gess it's good news for a certain group of fans, I supose I'm angry for skipping one TES title...

Ever heard the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't try and fix it."? Well, I don't know why they would want to take a very successful single player game that has sold millions of copies and try to take a risk like this. I don't want a TES MMO, I want TES 6! I am sure that I am not alone with this thought.

@ZOD777 I agree. I thought if anything, I would like to see a TES VI have limited co-op online multiplayer at most. Maybe a max of 2-4 other players who could connect and play with eachother. I would've rather seen that that a full-blown MMO. That's just my opinion, though.
