Everything we know about PlayStation Now so far

Sony's online game-streaming and rental service runs in 720p and is coming to PS4, PS3, TVs, and more, but we still have a lot of questions after CES 2014

Sony announced the upcoming PlayStation Now service at their CES keynote address, and we got some hands-on with the system at the show. The service will allow users to stream a selection of PS1, PS2, and PS3 games to both the PS3 and PS4, as well as the PlayStation Vita, Sony 2014 Bravia TVs, and even mobile and tablet devices.

Here are the facts we know so far about PlayStation Now:

  • You’ll need a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 to play the games on TV and tablets. PlayStation 4 will use the DualShock 4.
  • You’ll still be able to earn trophies like you do in current PS3 games.
  • Multiplayer will also work just like it does on PS3. You can play against other people who are playing the disc-based version of the game.
  • No games have been announced for the service, but the CES demo features four games: The Last of Us, Puppeteer, God of War: Ascension, and Beyond: Two Souls. It's a good bet that those four titles will be available when the service goes live.
  • There will be a “Netflix-like” subscription service available as well as individual game rentals.
  • Games will stream at 720p (though performance will depend on your own bandwidth limitations).
  • PlayStation Now games will allow you to save your progress to the cloud, so if you start playing on your TV, you can pick up where you left off on any other supported device.

What don’t we know yet?

No Caption Provided

  • How much it will cost.
  • How (or even if) this will tie into your PlayStation Plus subscription.
  • How stable the service runs in a “real world” setting. The CES demo stations Sony had set up were running through the PlayStation Now network, but we don’t know exactly how far away those servers were located from the convention. And it’s safe to assume that a lot fewer people are currently plugged into the in-development network than there will be when it goes live.
  • When it’s coming to TVs or the rest of the world.
    • The beta program is set to start in the US at the end of January, and the final version should roll out on PS3 and PS4 sometime in June. The release date for Vita and Sony Bravia TVs is sometime in 2014. Sony had no details on when the service would get worldwide distribution.

How well does it work? Playing with the system at CES, I didn’t notice any perceptible lag between pushing a button and performing an action, even when playing the platformer Puppeteer or the action title God of War: Ascenion. And graphics-intensive games like Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us looked just as good, though slightly less sharp, than when playing from the disc. Be sure to check back at GameSpot for a side-by-side graphics comparison as soon as the system’s beta goes live.

We expect to get a lot more details about the beta soon and full pricing info by E3.

This will live and die by A) how well it does in real world settings (all signs point to not very), and B) how many 3rd parties are going to sign up? If I'm a 3rd party, why the **** would I want to do this when I can make more money selling HD-er versions on disc or through traditional download?

And really... MULTIPLAYER?! Yeah, people playing this way won't be at a disadvantage AT ALL.

Seriously, people who still care about the older games have the older systems, or in the case of PS1 and some PS2, are playing on emulators.

@YukoAsho

The advantage for devs is that you can't pirate games, this way. So they will be all over this like bears (yes, bears) to honey. Sony will definitely make this work for everyone. Have you shopped at Gamestop lately? They consistently have the longest, SLOWEST lines. They have one or two cashiers, & like 10 or 15 very annoyed people. All because they are too greedy to let more people work the registers. You might also wait in a long line, & find they don't have what you're looking for. You have mothers, bitch-slapping their cranky, demanding kids, people whispering in your ear, "I wanna go home" like it's some sort of prison (it might as well be, My Gamestop has the heat turned all the way up!) You might also wait in a long line, & find they don't have what you're looking for. I hate having to always give them my info, & remember to bring that dumb Gamestop savings card with me. Ugh.

Also, do you know how much money can be made with digital game sales compared to trekking all the way to the store, wait in a long line, then go all the way back home? ALOT. If you were a dev, you would realize, THIS is where the big bucks are. I live two blocks away from my Gamestop, & still take me a while to get over there. I have to dress appropriately for the weather, remember to bring my keys, credit cards, cash, (rolls eyes) receipts, wires, parts, & products to return, & The Gamestop savings card, that's fallen off my keychain, that I can barely ever find. Goodness, if I forgot anything on my way there....I'm not going to miss this drama.

Sorry kid. Nothing lasts forever.

Futures need a change.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The licensing fees would insure a greater income then an HD release which take an initial investment and new promotion. With this they give permission to stream the game and get paid any time someone does.

I'm sorry, but I'm calling B.S. on this. I went through the whole OnLive Beta and it was a hair-pulling experience to say the least (even with a 24Mbps connection at the time). Would I love for this technology to live up to the hype? Hell Yes! Unfortunately, we are still a long way from this kind of service stealing the thunder from disc-based experiences.

They really need to have the option for people that own physical copies of PS3 games to use the disc as a verification that allows free streaming for that specific title, if available. The BC problem solved, right there. A cool way to tie it with Plus could be to let you pick a monthly queue. That you can pick from the entire library (like 2-5 games) and when the month is up, you can release the ones you don't play and get new ones.

I think they should just re-release the games after recoding them for the PS4

Demon Souls, Uncharted 1-3 Bundled together, The Last of Us, Sly Cooper Thieves in time, and Heavy Rain.

Hell they could bundle them together and call it "The PS3 Classics Bundle"... Release it with an in depth Art book on each of the games along with the Soundtracks and a mini PS3 Statue. Charge 150Bucks for it and call it a day... that would sell like hotcakes imo...

I honestly thought it was stupid when I heard they bought that company, and I'm still skeptical right now, but if this really does run smooth + they somehow tie this into Playstation Plus, like a combo subscription price for only a little more or something... its just game over. Everyone else can take off their game shoes and just hit the showers. Mercy rule.

<< LINK REMOVED >>I'm not really concerned about playing it on PS4, for me its more about being able to play it on the go on my Vita, at some random TV at a friends house, and definitely when someone else has laid claim to my TV at home. Honestly it's not something that I would dish out big money for, but if they're netflix-like plan to access a Library of games is reasonably priced and if its discounted by or combined with PS+ then that is just pure win.

Needing the Dualshock 3 to play on a Tablet sucks. I would prefer it to work with any gamepad provided it has enough buttons.

Would be nice if they at least gave a free game to trial with the Playstation Plus subscription so we can test to see how well this works in our home setups.

I think they should just add it in for free if you have a PS Plus membership and if you don't want PS Plus than just charge you a separate membership for PS Now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Cloud gaming services have offered live demos to test your connection with the service. Trying out Gaikai I ran into pretty bad frame rate issues when playing a 60FPS game as well as noticeable bad input delay. I don't expect this service to work any better provided my prior experience.

There will be a PS5 as there's still a need for a dedicated console experience. Playstation now is a fantastic service that only compliments the playstation brand, it doesn't make the physical console obsolete.

Not everyone is connected, not everyone is connected at the suggested speeds, the games in question are 720p and not exactly mind blowingly fast so the latency is negligible.

I could write more but I'm bored lol

I think the biggest thing we don't know is the game library. If it's huge and constantly updated with new releases I could see myself never buying a game for my Playstation hardware again. If it's a limited selection of rotating games I'd have a much harder time buying into it.

What Im really curious about is that if I play a PS1 game on Playstation Now

are the Graphics going to be Better like they are on my PS3 slim

Also, if its cloud based why couldnt every Playstation Now customer get 10-50 GBS of Storage and you can download and play without interuptions. The Download is tide to your Account not your system so it would ensure stability

The idea of having to pay again to play games I already own rubs me the wrong way. With discs it's probably unavoidable but digital purchases are different. If I bought The Last of Us digital...and they can see it sitting in my PSN account...don't charge me more to play it! But I'm sure there's a cost associated with the streaming delivery system. Still....irritating.

I'm not much of a last-gen gamer. Once I moved on to Xbox 360 and PS3, the only prior gen game that I really kept around was Battlefront 2. (And if there had been a Battlefront 3, BF2 would have gone bye-bye.) Before we know it, there will be PS4 versions of Uncharted, God of War, Infamous and more. I'll take those over fuzzy, laggy streamed versions of last-gen titles.

If Sony uses some sort of Netflix-type subscription model, the most I could see myself doing is buying for a month or two to binge on some classics I missed. There's no way I'd sign up for the long haul.
