Everything we know about PlayStation Now so far

Sony's online game-streaming and rental service runs in 720p and is coming to PS4, PS3, TVs, and more, but we still have a lot of questions after CES 2014

Sony announced the upcoming PlayStation Now service at their CES keynote address, and we got some hands-on with the system at the show. The service will allow users to stream a selection of PS1, PS2, and PS3 games to both the PS3 and PS4, as well as the PlayStation Vita, Sony 2014 Bravia TVs, and even mobile and tablet devices.

Here are the facts we know so far about PlayStation Now:

  • You’ll need a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 to play the games on TV and tablets. PlayStation 4 will use the DualShock 4.
  • You’ll still be able to earn trophies like you do in current PS3 games.
  • Multiplayer will also work just like it does on PS3. You can play against other people who are playing the disc-based version of the game.
  • No games have been announced for the service, but the CES demo features four games: The Last of Us, Puppeteer, God of War: Ascension, and Beyond: Two Souls. It's a good bet that those four titles will be available when the service goes live.
  • There will be a “Netflix-like” subscription service available as well as individual game rentals.
  • Games will stream at 720p (though performance will depend on your own bandwidth limitations).
  • PlayStation Now games will allow you to save your progress to the cloud, so if you start playing on your TV, you can pick up where you left off on any other supported device.

What don’t we know yet?

No Caption Provided

  • How much it will cost.
  • How (or even if) this will tie into your PlayStation Plus subscription.
  • How stable the service runs in a “real world” setting. The CES demo stations Sony had set up were running through the PlayStation Now network, but we don’t know exactly how far away those servers were located from the convention. And it’s safe to assume that a lot fewer people are currently plugged into the in-development network than there will be when it goes live.
  • When it’s coming to TVs or the rest of the world.
    • The beta program is set to start in the US at the end of January, and the final version should roll out on PS3 and PS4 sometime in June. The release date for Vita and Sony Bravia TVs is sometime in 2014. Sony had no details on when the service would get worldwide distribution.

How well does it work? Playing with the system at CES, I didn’t notice any perceptible lag between pushing a button and performing an action, even when playing the platformer Puppeteer or the action title God of War: Ascenion. And graphics-intensive games like Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us looked just as good, though slightly less sharp, than when playing from the disc. Be sure to check back at GameSpot for a side-by-side graphics comparison as soon as the system’s beta goes live.

We expect to get a lot more details about the beta soon and full pricing info by E3.

If this turns out good I will be dumping my ps3 and all of my ps3 games should get me a good headset or a collector's edition game or two.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Maybe you should work out how many games are available on it first.

Netflix being an example has got crap all movies on it. If it takes two years for the catalogue to become worthwhile I'd keep your PS3 if I were you.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I wouldn't call it a "safe" bet I mean one of the best PSP games out Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, has yet to make an appearance on PSN. Some of the best PSOne classics have yet to make it. My bet is they will release the service with a smattering of games and will then acquire more over time.

What really matters is how many they have at the start and how fast they can get them. If it takes an age as most things with Sony seem to do and as Steaming services out at the moment all seem to do, it is going to be a long term thing. To top it off the service will need to survive in its less popular state as well.

Technology will get better, but streaming 1080p is not easy. You need a good internet service at 1mb/s, and Sony will need an imposing infrastructure.

Yeah, if we could pick a resolution output to send from the cloud servers to our TV to cut down on internet useage, that'd be great.

PlayStation now is a double edged sword for the gaming industry, it's great that you'll be able to stream PS-PS2-PS3 games to mobile devices like cellphone, laptops and VITA the negative impact is there will be drop in quality of the games because of video compression issues and internet speed problems and the ability to stream games directly to a SONY TV without the need of a PlayStation console is very disheartening

If PlayStation now becomes successful and SONY stop making PlayStation consoles because people can just stream PlayStation games to their TVs, yes it will effect the whole gaming industry, it would be foolish to think otherwise

<< LINK REMOVED >> althought it's a great idea but there are still too many issues. Such like you need atleast 5mbs internet speed, we don't know if the gameplay will be smoothly YET, when playing you must be ONLINE because you basically steaming and people still prefer the hardcopy over digital copy. The Consoles ( any consoles ) have a digital download setting that allow you to download new games but people still prefer the gamestop and retail store :P

<< LINK REMOVED >> You're overreacting. There will be people, even a lot of people, who will use and enjoy this, but it won't ever be near enough to replace local consoles. Netflix streaming has been around for years, and DVD/Blu-ray is going strong as ever. This will not replace local play, just compliment it.

There was definitely lag on the service. There are videos to prove it. If you're playing a RPG or puzzle game, it probably won't matter much. Playing FPS, Platform games with jumping, sports games and any other game with with timing accuracy, you'll be effected.

OnLive has been around for about 3 years now and it still experience latency issues. This service will get better as broadband speeds increase. Microsoft is also working on a similar B/C for the XBox One, but they probably won't launch their service until 2015. With over 300K dedicate server, they will have the space for the games and all the users who want to access them. We'll see how the beta test goes with Playstation Now.

PlayStation now we be at it's full potential 7 years from now when internet speeds are at 50 mbps standard across the board for everyone, I have a 52 mbps connection but most of my friends don't so PlayStation now should be renamed "PlayStation later"

This will only work when networking technology increases, which is at a very slow rate. I would say 10 - 15 years from now it will work properly and perfectly.

I'm gonna keep my eye on this. I have a tablet that I do use a DS3 on to play emulated games, but only really up to the PS1/N64/GBA generation. Playing PS3 games on it would be pretty awesome. I'd like to rent one game individually just to see how it works in the "real world". If it works out, great! If not, never mind....try again maybe a few years from now.

Kinda obvious that it's only 720p streaming. It won't be able to handle 1080 for quite some time yet, let alone 4K.

Would be interesting to see an "Rent-to-own" type system.

That way we could try out games we might not otherwise buy - and if we like it, we can buy it at an subsidized cost.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It would be quite cool, but realistically we as renters wouldn't "deserve" any discount. Rent-to-own makes sense for physical retailers because product degrades over time; you're buying a Used product in addition to having paid a rental fee. Used product doesn't exist in Digital Download, so there's only the rental fee issue. They'd have to look at it purely as an upsell (which is still a valid enticement).

@GH05T-666 the ps4 is not backwards compatible. meaning that the hardware on the ps4 cannot run software from previous generation consoles. whereas on the playstation now, the software is being run on compatible hardware at the playstation now servers then streamed to your device.

i dont understand why they just dont let us download the game to console and than play it whitout any problems, like the idea of games rental, but i dont see why they are making problems for them self and consumers as well. I see how they want to save us from sometimes annoying game downloads, but maybe they should offer game download option for people who dosent have strong internet connection

<< LINK REMOVED >>The reason is simple, the games are not designed for other systems. The PS4 isn't backwards compatible natively, making it so would raise the cost of the hardware significantly. Remaking the games for the PS4 is more so, and emulating them is tricky. This offsite streaming solution is the most effective way to bring the large library from Sony's older systems and make them easily available on today's hardware at low cost to both Sony/publishers and consumers.

I agree that the internet requirement kinda sucks, having to maintain a connection to play a normally offline game isn't ideal and can cause some issues, but on the other hand you don't need a PS4...or PS3 for that matter, just the controller, and a smart TV/Vita/tablet/or quite likely PC so I think its pretty cool, though I'll be on the fence myself until I hear more about pricing.

<< LINK REMOVED >> In order to do that, you would need something to run it. Like you have downloaded the game, now how do you run it? With Playstation Now, their servers are running the game while its only being streamed to the TV/PS4/Vita (etc.)

@ImmersioNw0w @jokertax ok i see wath are you saying, ps4 could run it just like you rent games from psn plus. ps3 has also option for buying ps one and 2 games and playing directly from console, if you can do it on ps3 you could do it on ps4 also. I would much rather play games from servers like you said, without download, but i think the world is not ready for something like that right now (joke). I, again, love the idea of game rental, but even their ps3 store has lots of bugs (i thought that problem its bandwith connection in my country - Croatia, but didnt experienced such problems with xbox360) not to mention problems with streaming games when such option arrive.
