Everything we know about PlayStation Now so far

Sony's online game-streaming and rental service runs in 720p and is coming to PS4, PS3, TVs, and more, but we still have a lot of questions after CES 2014

Sony announced the upcoming PlayStation Now service at their CES keynote address, and we got some hands-on with the system at the show. The service will allow users to stream a selection of PS1, PS2, and PS3 games to both the PS3 and PS4, as well as the PlayStation Vita, Sony 2014 Bravia TVs, and even mobile and tablet devices.

Here are the facts we know so far about PlayStation Now:

  • You’ll need a PlayStation 3 DualShock 3 to play the games on TV and tablets. PlayStation 4 will use the DualShock 4.
  • You’ll still be able to earn trophies like you do in current PS3 games.
  • Multiplayer will also work just like it does on PS3. You can play against other people who are playing the disc-based version of the game.
  • No games have been announced for the service, but the CES demo features four games: The Last of Us, Puppeteer, God of War: Ascension, and Beyond: Two Souls. It's a good bet that those four titles will be available when the service goes live.
  • There will be a “Netflix-like” subscription service available as well as individual game rentals.
  • Games will stream at 720p (though performance will depend on your own bandwidth limitations).
  • PlayStation Now games will allow you to save your progress to the cloud, so if you start playing on your TV, you can pick up where you left off on any other supported device.

What don’t we know yet?

No Caption Provided

  • How much it will cost.
  • How (or even if) this will tie into your PlayStation Plus subscription.
  • How stable the service runs in a “real world” setting. The CES demo stations Sony had set up were running through the PlayStation Now network, but we don’t know exactly how far away those servers were located from the convention. And it’s safe to assume that a lot fewer people are currently plugged into the in-development network than there will be when it goes live.
  • When it’s coming to TVs or the rest of the world.
    • The beta program is set to start in the US at the end of January, and the final version should roll out on PS3 and PS4 sometime in June. The release date for Vita and Sony Bravia TVs is sometime in 2014. Sony had no details on when the service would get worldwide distribution.

How well does it work? Playing with the system at CES, I didn’t notice any perceptible lag between pushing a button and performing an action, even when playing the platformer Puppeteer or the action title God of War: Ascenion. And graphics-intensive games like Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us looked just as good, though slightly less sharp, than when playing from the disc. Be sure to check back at GameSpot for a side-by-side graphics comparison as soon as the system’s beta goes live.

We expect to get a lot more details about the beta soon and full pricing info by E3.

When this becomes active, we can still download PS1 and PS2 games from the Playstation Store on PS3 though right?

LAN latency is MUCH MUCH MUCH lower then any type of internet. What these guys experienced is the Best Case Scenario. It will never be that good, even if you have a fiber connection. I would be still interested in it, if I could use my Vita, as FPS I'm not a fan of.

the lag is not determined by what going on on the screen. you are "basically" playing on a console thats on a server and you are sending signals to the server, something will change and and a 720p/1080p image will be sent back. This is exactly like the onlive service that failed hard. I have a 12 Mbit connection and it was playable but not enjoyable. i had also played it on 30 and 60 mbit connections and it was only slightly better. you wont be playing any shooters or anything that evolves pointing.

Pricing and the lag of course will be the two biggest issues. The pricing cannot be over 10 bucks I am hoping they give us a free trial. I just refuse to believe that we are gonna be able to play an action intense game and it won't lag at all.

<< LINK REMOVED >>The 720p resolution is more for the sake of bandwidth usage than anything else. Upscale it to 1080p or higher and you'd need an even faster connection to get the most out of this system. That doesn't make sense given current global internet infrastructure and the fact that not everyone is running on a 5mb/s or higher connection.

720p sounds like a fair compromise to try suit more gamer's needs.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Gotta be honest, I'm not really sure why that's funny. Almost all of the games from this past generation were in 720p and upscaled to 1080p. Resolution isn't the issue here. The lag will be the issue. Make fun of that all you want, but chuckling about the resolution makes no sense.

Wary as usual - it sounds nice. Regardless I'm one of those gamers who owns games. I still own PS2 and PS3. I'll be purchasing physical PS1 PS2 and PS3 games still once I get a PS4. So **** that.

I'm curious to see what kind of connection speed is required for reliable streaming. Unlike Netflix where it is just a one-way download, this is going to require good upload speed to eliminate lag time, and buffering won't help with that.

Without making a long post with all the details, I had the same thought.

I played Mario on a remote server at work where the network limitations easily simulate connections on the lower end.

I played from a connection point with a 3 down and a 1 up (v-lan) to a slightly better 10 down 2 and had no little problem. The main issues were from out internal traffic spikes.

I couldn't do the turtle jump 100 lives trick but I could do the levels.

Having the said requirement on the client side I'd suspect there would be little problem.

@horizonwriter@ZombieGuyGeorge@batsu336@Noclippin well, I lost the count on the games I have. but I remember dragon age origins having different assets for UI for different resolutions. I actually liked the 480 versions better, but if you changed resolutions, you could see different arrange on windows and UI elements.

yeah some games are upscaled, but yoy can't blame them. for example, blazblue or guilty gear look awful in 180 but really nice in 720. mostly because sprites size that look close to shit when zoomed.

and actually lots of games look awful in 1080 and actually look better in 480, like doom classic or wolfenstein.

for the record there's also the 60fps thingie.

dungeon hunter is an awful game but it runs both in 1080p and 60fps. and it looks specially weird on a 400hz tv.

also, tekken on ps3 runs on 1080 and 60fps.

my cousin says I have around 4000 titles between ps3 and ps2, gotta see how many of them are ps3 and 1080.

People talk about how much they loved their PS1 and PS2 games. However, when you give them the ability to play those old games they "Loved" they talk about how you are a terrible greedy company... I own an Xbox One and still am pretty excited about the potential for this service.

I find this insulting, disgusting and a pretty damn desperate cash grab.

There is pretty much nothing that can justify this at all except for older games with online servers.

Wow. I hate digital gaming. It takes away a lot of your property rights as a consumer, but this is different.

I feel like I just sold my soul.

This is different. They're telling you that you don't really own it to your face, like Netflix, so I like it.

However, when talking about digitally buying a game, you don't really own in. Many times you're simply paying for the right to play it for a while or borrow the data. They call that ownership and it isn't. That's my beef.

This is fine by me, because it's a rental and they call it a rental.

There have been several times when a game's been removed from the XBLA marketplace, but those who had already purchased it are still able to download it again if they need to by looking at their download history.
