Final Fantasy 7 Remake's "Dramatic Changes" to Combat Discussed

Director Tetsuya Nomura hints at some changes in store for the PS4 game.

The upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VII will feature "dramatic changes" to the game's combat, although it won't be altered so much that it becomes unrecognizable, according to director Tetsuya Nomura.

He indicated this in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar), though he also offered some reassurance for fans hoping the project resembles the classic it's based upon.

"And of course, that being said, we want to clarify: We're not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that," Nomura said. "We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it's still recognizable."

Previously, Square Enix had been coy about any changes it might make. Nomura said in June that the company doesn't "want to interfere with what makes the original title so iconic." However, it also wants to give it a "fresh feel," with the goal being to not have the remake "become a one-to-one remake, or just the original Final Fantasy VII with better graphics."

Unfortunately, we still don't have any specifics on how combat or anything else will change, though you can expect major plot beats and other areas to remain the same. "There are certain plot points we don't want to interfere with or disturb, nor will we want to change elements that fans have very big attachments to," he said last month.

In the new OPM interview, Nomura also suggested that Advent Children, the critically panned Final Fantasy VII movie he directed in 2005, will offer some inspiration. Specifically, it'll be used for visual reference, though its 3D models won't be pulled directly for the remake, both because of the differences in technology and the fact that the movie is now a decade old.

The Final Fantasy VII remake was officially announced at E3 in June. It's slated to come to PlayStation 4, but does not yet have a release date.

Finally! It would be such a waste to give the main character such a big sword and everything the player could do with it was clicking on their preferable choice of attack variation as if they are playing a card game in the time before computers.

The appeal from a Turn Based, Real-Time, and Action based are all different (though Turn Base and Real-Time have more in common).

For me and many others who like Turn-Based and Real Time, the enjoyment comes from diving into the mechanics. In FFVII one of my favorite things to do was puzzling out how to best use materia and effects to optimize my battles.

Turn Based games have the biggest opportunity to employ intricate and well developed mechanics: by not having a time constraint, players will be able to make the most of the mechanics and use them in their decisions when they chose actions. It goes further even out of battle when determining what kind of equipment etc to use for specific enemies/areas.

Action combat puts full pressure on the player to react and act on timed cues, with most preplanning being 'equip stuff they are weak against and makes me strong against them'.

Active Time Battle (Real-Time) is either a Turn Based with a more gradient 'who acts when' mechanic, or a true Real-Time where players are challenged to make quick decisions based on circumstances. In both cases though, understanding the mechanics behind it is an important focus as it determines the decisions being made. So instead of 'go left or jump' the decisions become 'what action can I take that will make the most of the constantly changing situations'.

So don't say that one mode of game play is obsolete; modern technology has been a huge boon for action and cinematic combat, but it hasn't made the appeal of the other battle systems any less valid in their different style of appeal. Just say you don't enjoy that style, and leave it at that.

Edit: Not sure why it wouldn't let me just post this. Forced me to quote someone so thanks Arsyad00

As long as they drop Turn-Based combat (Because you fight someone by waiting for your turn... )
And random battles (because flocks of enemies are invisible...

We need a real-time battle system. X=swing sword B=Magic kind of system.

Then this game would be amazing, because the combat is the one thing that's always kept me out of Final Fantasy. It's just plain stupid.

@skyhighgam3r: Are you serious? You are stupid for NOT liking that type of gameplay. Real time combat has RUINED this franchise. Go play the last couple shitty Final Fantasy games if you want an action RPG. Or hell go play ANY OTHER RPG IN THE PAST 10 YEARS. We have a MILLION real-time battle systems. What REAL fans want is a strategy based turn based system.

I like my gameplay to be fun, not just an entertaining story.

@LostPower: No... I'm pretty sure that waiting for your turn in a battle is what is stupid, and wanting your video games battles to be... well... battles... that's not stupid at all.

Also, RPGs are a million times more fun now that they aren't turn-based lol

Going back and playing old turn-based games makes my teeth grind.

By all means, have an 'ATB Mode' in there. Appease the older gamers that can't let go.

But for the sake of mine and others sanity, please make it optional.

This game was so good when it came out because of the ground breaking things it done during its time like first 3D Graphics for a Role Playing Game The amount of FMV/CG and the quality of them for the time period Identifiable protagonist a Black Party Member also the Death of Party Member

Use of language Weird situations

Conjuring of emotions within the player

Mini games/Chocobo Raising/Racing/Snowboarding I absolutely loved the game I was 10 when it came out played it at age 12 and again at 16 but since than so many other types of combat games have came out that turn based to me is t fun I like to be a character and control his actions. If this game the remake had vindictus type combat where you have to dodge and be on your toes in combat and really be in the action instead of watching it like turn based :( you still will get the full affect of final fantasy 7 plus me being 27 now my son who is 11 will get to experience the game in his generation standards and mine aswell because I love technology and being in total control of cloud in a action rpg final fantasy... Would be insane to play lol but that's just me

I also played Swg which was best mmo I ever played when it came out through the the changes they made it sucked :( combat wise but if they made a Swg game today with today's action combat... Like vindictus I would be in heaven lol

@jetstroke22:It did 'ground breaking things', indeed. So, why would they not continue to do ground breaking things? I can't understand why people are so fixated on turn-based combat. It's old, it's been re-hashed 5 billion times, and there is nothing new to discover in it. :)

@Elena_The_Turk: How old something is has nothing to do with how entertaining it is. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time is considered dated but is still one of (if not the) best game ever made. Every year I'm constantly pulling out my N64 or PS2 to play a game I've beaten ten times before instead of buying whatever new hit game everyone is going on about.

The cutting away to fights is the Random world encounter method. I can see getting into real time fights with enemies onscreen and still have an ATB system once the fight starts. Menus are going to be a part of this.

It might be just me, but I would really like to have combat like Kingdom Hearts 2 or Dissidia as far as the free movement goes. Kingdom Hearts still has my favorite combat system of any game I've played, besides Dark Souls. But that wouldn't work at all.

@bi0hazard187949: But turn-based is old, has been done 5 billion times, and is, quite frankly, boring by this point.

We've had the turn-based era. We've played all the turn-based games. It's time to look forwards to new things.

Sure, have a 'turn-based' optional mode if you like. Just remember how that turned out for Dissidia, ok?

@Elena_The_Turk: Yeah we had the turn based era and it ended and now most RPGs are the same re-hashed game over and over. And now I am SICK of active combat.

It would be REFRESHING to play a new turn based combat RPG. Considering its been like a fucking decade.

In the graphical part, i don't believe it isn't that bad 10 years old graphics because watching the movie in BD it's still a no match comparison for actual console graphics.

What ever elation and near on tears after the E3 12' FF7 remake is slowly growing into a sour pit in my stomach. Changing the materia system is insane - turn base is still loved, linear is still loved - just look at the huge resurgence of RPGs, CRPGs over the last couple of years. For instance Bravely Default. Grandia 2 hd remake coming out tomorrow.

Please do not take what is one of the best things about FF7 - and apply the publisher/ accounting / focus-groups shellac coating to it. Changing FF7 combat system beyond updating graphics is like adding ice to Scotch.

@jenovaschilld: Some people like Scotch straight, some also like it on the rocks though. In fact, lots of people do. Therein lies the problem.

Lets be honest. How many recent AAA games use exclusively turn-based combat in their games. Square Enix games are excluded from the count.

And by the way you should never have to water down or chill aged scotch. It is considered a sin, EVEN IF YOU ASK FOR IT THAT WAY, any good bartender would warn you against adding anything, and a really good bartender would refuse.

@AQWBlaZer91: That's actually not bad so long as it's a fixed version of it. 13's combat was actually a strong point for the game. But if it plays like lightning returns or X-2 that be good. I prefer it doesn't play like 12 if inhad to choose.

@Elena_The_Turk: Well a black mage would spam magic. A summoner would spam summon. A thief would spam steal. A Blue mage would spam whatever the hell the blue mages do. Basically if all you did was attack with every character you would be playing the game completely incorrectly.

I've always thought that some of Nomura's business decisions are rooted in jealously and contempt for his former superiors. I remember reading about when he joined the company during the FF7 days, and lets just say certain people put him in his place and told him to focus more on what he was specifically given to work on, which was character design namely. For someone who many deem 'talented' I'm sure this didn't sit well with him.

The fact that he mentions the game not being made into a shooter worries me. From that I take that the battle system is actually vastly changed in regards to the ATB. Its something entirely different which leads me to believe that its literally a carbon copy of the battle systems released post FF12. The sarcastic tone mentioning shooters is another red flag in and of itself because lets be honest, why would a FF7 remake ever go into that territory? What the hell is going on at Square Enix?

I was kinda hoping it'd be action combat, but it sounds like it'll be some modernized version of ATB.

I guess 13's ATB system was pretty dynamic and fun, but I still prefer straight action. But modernized ATB is acceptable.

People who want just the old system as it was originally are stuck in the past imo. I mean, I've played through 7 multiple times, and I love that game, but that gameplay is OLD and TIRED.

Here comes the flame.

@GregoryBastards: Spirits Within was awesome, too. Back when they released both of these, the graphics were like, never seen before. Even now, years later, the graphics still stand up strongly next to other 3DCG films, and even quite a few next-gen games.

As for 'panned', the original release sold 4.1 million worldwide, and the re-release, AC:C sold about 2 million worldwide. Reviews were fairly mixed as well. I guess anything that doesn't make bazillions is a failure for these people'.

@Elena_The_Turk: Advent Children was pretty okish. But Spirits Within? Really? That movie was utter trash. I knew it was terrible when I watched it as a kid and I liked everything when I was a kid. I used to think that Gargoyles was a good show and that the Sandlot was the best movie ever made.
