Final Fantasy 7 Remake's "Dramatic Changes" to Combat Discussed

Director Tetsuya Nomura hints at some changes in store for the PS4 game.

The upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VII will feature "dramatic changes" to the game's combat, although it won't be altered so much that it becomes unrecognizable, according to director Tetsuya Nomura.

He indicated this in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine (via GamesRadar), though he also offered some reassurance for fans hoping the project resembles the classic it's based upon.

"And of course, that being said, we want to clarify: We're not going to be changing it into a shooter or something like that," Nomura said. "We are going to be bringing dramatic changes, but we want to make sure it's still recognizable."

Previously, Square Enix had been coy about any changes it might make. Nomura said in June that the company doesn't "want to interfere with what makes the original title so iconic." However, it also wants to give it a "fresh feel," with the goal being to not have the remake "become a one-to-one remake, or just the original Final Fantasy VII with better graphics."

Unfortunately, we still don't have any specifics on how combat or anything else will change, though you can expect major plot beats and other areas to remain the same. "There are certain plot points we don't want to interfere with or disturb, nor will we want to change elements that fans have very big attachments to," he said last month.

In the new OPM interview, Nomura also suggested that Advent Children, the critically panned Final Fantasy VII movie he directed in 2005, will offer some inspiration. Specifically, it'll be used for visual reference, though its 3D models won't be pulled directly for the remake, both because of the differences in technology and the fact that the movie is now a decade old.

The Final Fantasy VII remake was officially announced at E3 in June. It's slated to come to PlayStation 4, but does not yet have a release date.

They now need to take away the word REMAKE and put IMPROVED (to him)

To me FF7 is the best RPG I've played downside to it when you've played it once you can't get that experience back because you know whats coming, all they need to do is put it in HD remake the towns, world maps and all the bells and whistles to make it like it does in the trailer or Advent Children and keep the ATB system and all the stuff we loved but add the missing stuff like Vincents story and Yuffies

@Dav_id83: you do realize tha tthey have done that to every single remake they released right?

even ff 3 and 4 on the ds have a "imporved" combat system.

every single time they go for a remake(not remaster) they change alot, but people still enjoy it.

i think its going to be the same atb, but with a twist, since a hi def, version of the ffvii would feel weird(the models move too fast to feel natural).

I hope they don't mess up the best battle system in Square-Enix history.

None of that Action RPG crap please!, ATB or Wait was perfect.

@8thwaypromotion: Nothing wrong with Action RPGs, except the possible fact that you suck the D at them and hence don't want to suck at FF7.

@8thwaypromotion: I'm pretty sure that isn't a fact i hope you're not stating that as a fact. My opinion says 5,8 and 10 were better battle systems.

This is no longer a remake. It's a reimagining. Same thing they do with movies these days. The new total recall? Sucked. New robocop? Sucked.

This is the path they are taking with this game.

And to whoever is pleased with this news, id love to see your reaction when this game comes out and it gets a bunch of average review scores. And the only reason they'll be that good, is because of the story and characters that this crap package will be wrapped around.

@riseagainst976:

Remake: Verb. To make something again or differently.

To reimagine would be to interpret it as something entirely new.

Such as taking the Mona Lisa and painting it as a man!

I can't stand this!!

If you wanna put your creative touch on this, and make it modern or unique or whatever, just make FF16, 17, or 18.. Why do you have to mess with this game!? Give the fans what they've been asking for. Little or no changes aside from graphics

I've been wanting a remake for more than 10 years. But not long after Nomura spoke, I went from gleefully excited to.. Oh god, I hope Square doesn't f--- this up.

I have no faith in Nomura, and if he's going to make 'dramatic changes' because the game isn't modern enough, I wish he'd just make a modern game instead of trying to turn FF7 into a 'modern' game. No matter what they do, they're going to anger some people. If they keep to the original, some new players won't like it, but if they change too much, the fans of the original won't like it. So why piss off half your player base? Just make FF16 instead, then the FF7 vets will have nothing to complain about.

@lostn: And then Square Enix alienates an entirely new generation of gamers. What a great way to start off with them.

Put it this way. If FF7 and FF15 don't appeal to the younger generation of gamers, S-Q is gone. Poof, goodbye. Because that is where the majority of their sales are coming from.

FF7 is definitely one of my favorite games, being 22 I was only about 5 when it was released but it was one of the first games that caught my attention. Even now being very critical of games and nostalgia no longer being a kind veil to let me continue liking old things that turn out to not be so great, FF7 still impresses me as far as RPG's go.

Although i'd really like another game that left a similar feel it's never going to happen. It was when FF7 came out that it had such an impact, the age most of us played it at, the way the world unfolded and the game progressed, the music, the not so obvious side quests and the high number of secrets, even the shitty blocky sprites all came together in this game and felt pulled off so fluidly.

Even with a remake with redone graphics and minor changes I doubt many old fans would feel it to be the remake they wanted, or had been waiting for. I myself lack the impressionable mentality I had not that long ago at all, and I know at least for myself a direct remake wouldn't have much of a different effect than just playing the original game. I'd be like "Oh cool new graphics." and then i'd probably revert back to the original version of the game because that's the version that i'd grown to like so much in the first place.

I think most of you heard "remake" and got really pumped just like I did, the wait finally over, a wait a lot of us thought was pointless. But I think you expect too much.

I think the most you can hope for is that they do change the game in some ways, and make it feel kind of like a new experience but leave an abundance of the original content. Don't assume about the changes they make to the battle system, and don't assume based on your dislike of some of squares decisions. This will not be the game you grew up with, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't give it a chance. I mean it's kind of ridiculous to bitch so much over such scarce information.

@Jimmityjam: Most people who loved the series stopped liking it when final fantasy XIII and its sequels came out. They deviated from the turn based combat and exploration that made the RPG formula so appealing. Now everyone is going to be pissed when they turn FF7 into another shitty action game.

@overachiever89: Not true exactly lightning returns was created to be like old school rpgs but people were sick and tired of the 13 series by then. That game after giving it a try is a diamond in the dirt of it's predecessors not that i hated the 13 series but besides the story lightning returns was proof of a good battle system and exploration.

FF13 had its flaws and strengths. FF13-2 is more interesting so far with the whole time-travel theme. I haven't played FF13-3 yet. I would suggest watching a few 'let's play' videos to see if you're interested, rather than letting bias and sheep people ruin what could be a fun game for you.

Every sequel to FF7 has been mediocre at best and every. single. one of them. represented the very same opportunity to improve upon some aspect of FF7's gameplay, mechanics and storytelling.

The reason FF7 is still the pinnacle of the franchise is because they haven't been able to do better.

Stop it; you fail at "New and Improved". Do something different. If you absolutely need to capitalize on FF7's undying popularity do what Gearbox did with Homeworld: do a faithful cross platform remake of the original with improved graphics and effects so you don't ruin the legacy, then include your new and improved thing separately.

@dtla1730:Crisis Core was awesome, especially for a handheld. I literally cried when it ended. Not just because of that ending, but because it was -over- and I'd finished the game.

As for better... I think that FF15 is going to come close. Can't really say until the full game is released, but playing the demo gave me all kinds of good vibes. The same vibes FF7 gave me.

@Elena_The_Turk: I couldn't finish Crisis Core. It wasn't fun and the story was really poorly written. I have very little interest in buying FF15 but I may pick it up cheap just to have a copy of every FF on my shelf.

@dtla1730: Actually the formula was pefected at 6 and chrono cross the two games that made 7 great and forever set the standards for all rpgs after it. Also no 7 isn't that sucked on that all the other ff games after are created in it's likeness cause it's so called perfect. 8 was it's own thing with the junction system that game in no way played like 7. 9 a return to the styles of 1-6. 10 gameplay like a super improved version of 1-3 with it's own improvements. 11 mmo, 12 imo mixed with mmo off 11's formula and 4-6's gamplay and battle system. 13 is where in some sense you're correct the battle system and some characters are inspired by 7 and advent children. 14 mmo using 11's formula and more flashy and action like to 13. 15's battle system is based off kingdom hearts and old school final fantasy games 1-8 in different areas of it's gameplay.

@dtla1730: there's already a "faithful" remake of FF7, which is on PC. With achievements and all. Also coming to ps4 but now seems unlikely as there's another FF7 remake for ps4 in the works.

@sakaixx: Those are ports, not remakes.

A remake would imply that they re-created the entire game from scratch.

The 'hd ports' they released is just LAZY. They barely even upscaled the textures, left all the bugs, and let it go. But then every HD version I've played so far, has been a lazy port. (TOS:Chronicles, FF:Type-0, AC:Liberation)... bleh.

@sakaixx: I've only played the '98 PC version. I read about the '12 re-release for PC being problematic so it's probably a good thing for PS4 users that they skip it.

A full-res, functional PC remake would be awesome as long as it's still recognizable as FF7. That's really all my point was. I just don't want them to get all glam with it. That world was really engrossing.

Been reading past articles about how they want to make ff more like other game Franchises and it's making me rethink buying a ps4, if this is how they want to bring costumers back to Sony...this is not the way to do it. I'm not afraid of some changes but if the core battle system is action then to me, it's NOT FF7. Story is important but if they are changing it to some lame run of the mill system like FF15 will have...I just don't know if I'm interested.

@chrissyannisme: You do realise the FF15 system shown in the demo is only like 40% complete, right? They didn't even put magic in there yet for crying out loud. How you can judge an incomplete preview and call it 'run of the mill' is beyond me.
