Final Fantasy 7's PS4 Port Includes Cheats For Scrubs

Skip battles, refill your health, and more with these commands.

During PlayStation Experience 2015, Square Enix showed off the first gameplay trailer for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. As expected, it elicited a response somewhere between euphoria and curmudgeonly party-pooping.

The PlayStation 4 port of the Final Fantasy 7 HD PC edition was also given a surprise release at the event. You may have missed it because, frankly, Square Enix is re-releasing Final Fantasy games so fast that it'll probably get featured on the next season of Top Gear.

It turns out that this version of the game features a number of new features that make the game considerably easier to play. As discovered by IGN, there are three cheats in total.

The first, activated by pressing the L3 and R3 sticks simultaneously will toggle random encounters on and off. If you've played this game before this will definitely save you time and help you get to the bit where the annoying healing girl gets shanked, which is the best bit.

If, however, you're playing this for the first time, don't read the paragraph before this and also don't use this cheat, because that's not how it was meant to be played and you should suffer through the obnoxiousness of that game's random battles like the rest of us did in the mid-nineties.

The second cheat, activated by holding down the L3 stick, will make the game run three times as fast, so you can get to the cross-dressing mission ASAP. We understand.

The third and final cheat, activated by pressing the R3 stick, lets you refill health and the Limit Break Meters, which pretty much makes the game entirely devoid of challenge, removes the sense of satisfaction you get from defeating enemies, and devalues the progression, thereby making playing it kind of pointless.

Anyways, enjoy.

Disclosure: GameSpot doesn't endorse cheating, unlike IGN.

I am not a scrub. As of this writing, I'm 46 years old. I am a man with a life and a family. I don't have the hours & hours that would be needed to play a remake of FF7 that did not have such benefits. I applaud Square-Enix for their decision to allow the remake of FF7 to have these benefits. If you consider yourself a purist and don't want to be tempted to use these benefits, I'd suggest you find an original disc. Play it on an emulator or buy yourself a second-hand console.

The person who write this damn article needs to seriously STFU and die. He obviously hates the damn game and should not be reviewing it.,what a fucking dick he is. Aerith was the best character in the game.

Also calling people names such as scrub isn't professional at all. I'm shocked this shit gets listed like this. This guy is a total joke and should be fired. I guess there is no control management over at Gamespot and they don't give a shit what is put out. This is just beyond pathetic and this should not happen at professional work place.

@Fade2black001: You are literally too stupid if you cannot understand this article. He's obviously a fan of the game. It's just the internet has made FFVII almost a joke to newcomers, to fans of the game many years ago. People will go on how much they know the game, but only just repeat shit they saw on the internet. He wants people to play the game the way he did. I thought his style of writing was obvious, but nobody on these comments seems to understand much more than a few words.

so im a scrub because i simply want to relive the story and not spend 40 hours of game play just on random battles. im at the end of the game and have just passed 20 hours in game. 10 of those are just the game sitting in the menu while i was away. these modes are for player that want to enjoy the game again and not enjoy the grind. im a huge FF buff but i dont have the time to play this game traditional

@untouchables111: Then that comment from his article wasn't referring to you, idiot. If you are playing to relive the game, then it doesn't matter if you use the feature; only the first time players. Unless there is a reason your guilt compelled you enough to comment over the offense you took...

As much as I dislike cheating and exploits I'm actually happy about this because I'll feel original like back in the days. when I would see kids and markers getting the cheats of gamestop cheat books Lol. aww those were real game days no dlc bs just cheats and hard gaming to unlock extra content.

Well, isn't that special? If you don't like cheats, turn them off. If you don't like the "very easy" mode, turn it off. It puzzles me how myopic the internalized, narcissistic geek can become, so often more concerned about how OTHERS are playing the game rather than just enjoying the game in whatever way makes it fun and relevant to THEM. I always play a game through first on easy. Let's me get a sense of the game, the scope, the dynamic, then I go and play whatever insane level they have and have a blast. It's just a playing style. Perhaps Gamespot should worry a whole lot less about how others play the game (and the amount of difficulty/frustration they encounter) and a whole lot more about the QUALITY of the game, because some of the reviews given here often feel somewhat like..... insider trading.

I've played this game about 10 times in 15 years. I think for my 15th time, eliminating random battles is a god scent and can make me be able to re-live this game that I haven't played in 7 years that much more enjoyable. I played it for the challenge already many times. I'm just now playing it again to re-freshen my self up for the remake.

Eh, I didn't find the game too challenging but....if you're skipping all the encounters...do you get the XP from them as well? How the hell are you going to level up? I mean...what good would refilling health and limit breaks do if you are dead in one hit? Unless you can revive yourself too lol. I don't know, I never had a problem with random encounters. I mean, I did get that ass beat when I was like....yoo what's this red thing in the desert....yeah fun times. And....hey what's this green thing under the sea.....You....are..not prepared.

I'm eating a ham and cheese baguette whilst drinking Vimto, reading a story about a Final Fantasy 7 remake... Does it seem like I'm ready for "Microsoft to accelerate my servers" with an awkward picture of a hand connected to a city? Can we get more videogame orientated adverts and news on GAMEspot please?

Challenge is still there if you want it. Just don't use the cheat. I think it's great for someone that wants to go through and only experience the story.

Personally I'd like to see more games with "story-only" (or close to it) options. If that's all you want, then have at it. If not, just pick a higher difficulty.

@pheria: FF7 never had any challenges. Ever. Good game, but zero challenge. Sorry if facts offend your ego, the game was extremely simplistic.

When players overwhelmingly have to invent their own scenarios for making the game challenging (like single-character only no limit break no equipment challenge), you know straight away the base game isn't challenging.

@CyberEarth: Did you find and beat Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon without looking at a guide? If yes, you're less than 1 in 100.000, if not less than 1 in a million.

FF7, like the vast majority of JRPGs from the PS1 era till today, have simple not-that-challenging combat systems with random encounters being easy to complete and bosses maybe forcing to revive someone. But their hidden secrets are harder to find and complete than any challenge JRPGs offered before 1995.

The last Square game that actually challenged me was The Last Remnant, but that's because it is so convoluted that I doubt if even the developers knew what they coded. Avoiding battles to make sure the enemies don't become harder (since they level with your group), except when they already kick your behind, isn't good design for JRPGs; battles should be encouraged, not avoided.

@StriderNo9, @Dark_Mits: I did both without a guide, thanks. They weren't difficult, especially when you figured out how limit breaks worked and had things like Phoenix / Life2. Emerald Weapon was especially easy once you figured out he attacks for your equipped materia value. Ruby was still pretty easy after you see his attacks. Status effects? Oh look, there's a Ribbon. Fire attacks? Element or Fire Armlet. As long as you don't herp derp KoTR, you're fine. I seem to remember either draining his mana or hitting him with status effects as well to limit his attacks.

As for Last Remnant - the leveling up of enemies along with your party isn't something new, and it's not new to Squaresoft. They did it in FF VIII much earlier. And it was no secret then that running away to keep enemy levels low made for a far easier game.

Speaking of guides - did you play Kingdom Hearts? Did you use a guide for Sephiroth? Oh - like this guide?

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/516587-kingdom-hearts/faqs/19575

BTW - I don't use guides. I used to write them. Thanks for playing.

Scrubs type up spoilers before giving warnings. Just saying.

"As discovered by IGN, there are three cheats in total."

HA! Discovered? No, the game tells you about them when you boot it up. They're on the control scheme screen. Square didn't even try to hide them. IGN merely added them to a wiki. Jason from Kotaku was live streaming and showing off the cheats this past weekend before IGN even updated their wiki.

The 3 cheats just to recap are:

Disable random encounters, Run 3x as fast and Refill Health and Limit Break meters.

The 1st one I think is fine, it slows down the game too much with them on ALL the time, disabling it lets you level up when YOU want to (just reenable it) and prevents you from being overleveled when fighting bosses.

The 2nd one is run 3x as fast and again I think it is fine as this game is really long and playing it should just be a nice nostalgia trip rather a grind from the past, speed the game up just a bit is fine.

The 3rd is the only one I don't agree with, it just removes any challenge at all the game has, sure I said the previous 2 are fine but they are for saving time, this one is for the game to actually be a game and it just handing you a completed challenge with no effort is pointless. I'd say try not to use this one for the game sake but the other 2 like I said are time savers.

Now, I've never played FF7 all the way through (and if the total cost of the remake's "episodes" tallies out to more than $60 I never will) so this article doesn't particularly apply to me, but the guy who wrote it is legitimately a dick. Why would someone so whiny who clearly doesn't like the topic be forced to write the article on it? This was awful. Why should an article on a video game site detailing cheats from a video game be about insulting the reader? It's kind of disgusting really. This site has always been my go-to destination for gaming news and I'd like it to stay that way, but if you feel so strongly against the cheats then why bother to make the article at all? It's unnecessary and serves no purpose aside from belittling players. That's not news nor entertainment. I'm genuinely disappointed right now.

Cheating in a single player game? Suit yourself. Cheating in a multiplayer game? Go ahead and die.

Atleast they're not charging extra for it.

Wow nice attitude you have there asshole. I can't believe you were actually hired to write for this site. and the new cheats can be turned on and off at will. the thing that makes these little cheat tools great is that they werent changes shoved down our throats as new game mechanics shoved into the game. they can be turned n and off at will and anyone who wants to use them all the time or a little bit, can and those that dont want to, dont have to turn them on.

Those random encounters are what help to level your characters early on. There's also an item later in the game that allows players to flee unwanted, undesired battles.

@forester057: A gamer must be living under a rock (ie. not having visited any site related to videogames in the last 18 years) to not know about this spoiler. Yes, I know that there are still people who haven't played the game, but chances are that if someone who is already at least 15yo and has wanted to play FF7, they'd have purchased and played it already through one of the various ways available.

@Dark_Mits: I'll admit I didn't do much gaming in my earlier years (and no FF type games), but rediscovered it around 2003 (about when games started getting good btw). Since then I have visited game sites like this or IGN on most days. So your logic is false since I don't live under a rock and have been on gaming sites pretty much every day for the last 10 years and am way way older than 15 (grew up with the atari/intellivision kind of old). I haven't lived through the apparent bliss of playing through FF7. So sorry. You are not as all knowing as you think you are, but apparently you knew about this spoiler. At least you didn't pull out the "you're not a real gamer" nonsense. Was that hard for you? It was implied but you didn't just come out and say it.

@forester057: Aeris's death has been impossible to contain on forums, on discussions or even on any news related to FF7 directly or any of its spinoffs. It has been mentioned on entirely unrelated discussions as well. I guess that when you say you visit sites you mean that you just skim through titles.

I never said you're not a real gamer. That's something you pulled off. In fact I open my post with "A gamer". I don't even said anything about anyone's age, that's something you try to bring in the discussion to strengthen your position. And I didn't even mention anything about playing FF7 being a bliss, that's you being passive agressive. I also didn't claim to be all knowing, that's something you pulled off.

What next? Would you complain the same if someone said that Darth Vader is Luke's father?

@Dark_Mits: Vader is Luke's Father? Noooooooo! I'm pretty sure I know what I do and I don't need a know it all to tell me how I must be skimming the sites. First I don't know who Aeris is so I wouldn't have known that reference would I. Besides it wasn't really a complaint. More of an observation that maybe a few of us are planning to play the remake and experience ff7 for the first time and that was a spoiler and a damn big one.
