Final Fantasy 7's PS4 Port Includes Cheats For Scrubs

Skip battles, refill your health, and more with these commands.

During PlayStation Experience 2015, Square Enix showed off the first gameplay trailer for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. As expected, it elicited a response somewhere between euphoria and curmudgeonly party-pooping.

The PlayStation 4 port of the Final Fantasy 7 HD PC edition was also given a surprise release at the event. You may have missed it because, frankly, Square Enix is re-releasing Final Fantasy games so fast that it'll probably get featured on the next season of Top Gear.

It turns out that this version of the game features a number of new features that make the game considerably easier to play. As discovered by IGN, there are three cheats in total.

The first, activated by pressing the L3 and R3 sticks simultaneously will toggle random encounters on and off. If you've played this game before this will definitely save you time and help you get to the bit where the annoying healing girl gets shanked, which is the best bit.

If, however, you're playing this for the first time, don't read the paragraph before this and also don't use this cheat, because that's not how it was meant to be played and you should suffer through the obnoxiousness of that game's random battles like the rest of us did in the mid-nineties.

The second cheat, activated by holding down the L3 stick, will make the game run three times as fast, so you can get to the cross-dressing mission ASAP. We understand.

The third and final cheat, activated by pressing the R3 stick, lets you refill health and the Limit Break Meters, which pretty much makes the game entirely devoid of challenge, removes the sense of satisfaction you get from defeating enemies, and devalues the progression, thereby making playing it kind of pointless.

Anyways, enjoy.

Disclosure: GameSpot doesn't endorse cheating, unlike IGN.

@poopenshaft_v2: He's not calling people scrubs; he's calling those who would use such cheats scrubs. As much as "PC" people want to be, this actually can have grave consequences on the JRPG genre, since if it turns out to be successful, more devs will implement it, and we'll end up with games that are pure movies with the action pausing once in a while for the player to press a button.

What a salty written article, whoever wrote this clearly isn't being professional....

Anyway as stupid as those cheats are, they are optional, you can always ignore them, so I don't see the big fuss, though I'm curious about something, does the actual HD PC version get this as well? or is this an exclusive feature to the PS4?

@Dark_sageX: Not included in the official game no. I'm sure someone made a trainer for FF7. Someone always makes a trainer for everything.

the first 2 are fine, nobody wants to be attaked by a millions and 1 mobs (that they dont need to), and running the game at 3 times the speed is just usefull overall for the ginding and such BUT and this is a BIG BUTT free refills is just lazy, kills the very point of the game, there somthing people should work for and thats one of them.

@neowarrior793: That's actually exactly how FF games are meant to be played - being attacked at random constantly. The only way to avoid it is in entries that have No Encounters armor or weapons.

@neowarrior793: if you run the game without encounters you will more than likely miss out on a 100% run. Enemy skill materia. and you call the refill cheat lazy? well then tell me what is W-item glitch? i don't think any of the cheats should have been implemented. to say that 2 are ok and not lazy and 1 is lazy is kind of counter intuitive.

The triple speed I can get. It could be nice for some areas and for people who already played it multiple times, I've used similar things in emulators before.

The random encounter toggle is a double sided sword so I'm ok with that too. If you use it too much you'll be under powered so you'll have to grind to make up for it, making it not much of a cheat. It will be convenient for going back to low level areas though.

But the bar refills is completely STUPID. If you don't want to deal with the challenge in battles why are you even playing the game!? Just go watch it on youtube or something.

@bacontophat45: Setting random encounter off when you're about to die let you safely leave the "dungeon" to heal and come back.... so it's still a big cheat actually.

I still think 8 is better than 7 (psx generation) and 6 is better than every single FF game to date (not including the MMO) but overall, I enjoyed all major releases (not including MMO and direct sequels) I like that they try to make them different from one another

@iblind77: Many of us have.... dozens of times over the past 18 years. Some people might want to replay it without devoting another 30 hours of grinding. Don't be an elitist prick.

@Xirtahm: All I'm saying is I remember actually taking time to play games. I think it took me 2 years to beat FF7 the first time. If you already put your time in, I don't care if you use the cheats. You misread my comment as being elitist and I forgive you.

A lot of games nowadays are losing their grinds. I want to take forever on a game. That's the point. Stop buying games you don't have time to play then complain it takes too long. That's why microtransactions are a thing now. Might as well call these cheats a "Time Savers Pack."

@iblind77: I'd argue turning off random encounters is the hard way. If you play the vanilla game it's fairly easy from start to finish but, without the levelling, you're going to struggle against some of the bosses.

@Triton: well then they can take longer to play it and still enjoy it the way the rest of us did... Using cheat codes like these remove all the "game" aspects and make it into just a story, and if you want to read the story you can just use Wikipedia... Will never understand people who pay for a game then cheat their way all the way through, it's a waste of their own money

@Frogster8: while i agree putting cheats ruins the experience somewhat, i also agree that people just dont have the time like they used to and others have played it dozens of times over.

The only thing the cheats are is an option which isnt a bad thing as it pleases both parties.

Party A) "im not using cheats i want the full experience and grind"

Party B) "i dont have time to do this i've got XYZ to do"

Both parties happy.

Party.

@king_quaps: @Myron117: I'm not saying I think they shouldn't be allowed, and yeah I suppose it's an additional thing that doesn't detract from the experience for people who don't want to use them... I'm genuinely saying I don't understand why people would use them, if you want to just know the story you could read it on Wikipedia or watch all the scenes on YouTube or watch somebody do a playthrough for free or something.

I think that these cheats remove the actually game element, so when there are so many other options of experiencing the storyline, why pay for the game, cheat through the game part, then spend hours trailing around the map yourself not actually doing any gaming

@Frogster8: there's plenty of stuff to do that you wouldn't get from just watching videos. For example the sheer joy of things like pressing the button in the reactor at the same time and trying to enter the safe code in Niebelheim XD.

In seriousness, the cheats toggle so you have the option to use them when you feel like it. For example there are some areas that you need to explore that have high encounter rates and you might not want that tedium. Or you might get unlucky in a malboro encounter and want to use the health cheat so you don't lose your progress.
