Final Fantasy VII: Franchise Player

Looking forward to Crisis Core but don't remember the difference between a Jenova and a Shinra? This feature has all you need to get back up to speed.

Final Fantasy VII is a misleading title. In fact, the game is about as final as a midterm, and though its title labels it the seventh game in one series, it also marks the first entry in a growing series of its own, known as the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The latest addition to this ever growing library is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the story of a SOLDIER mission to the rustic town of Nibelheim.

This should sound somewhat familiar because the original Final Fantasy VII's most mind-bending plot twist centered on Cloud's shattered memories of this event. But if the details are hazy, fret not, for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII picks up the pieces to tell the story of an unknown soldier named Zack, while shedding new firelight on the downfall of Sephiroth. Unfortunately, the original came out so long ago that you may not remember what any of this had to do with the price of Mako in Midgar. Cue Franchise Player!

The Cast

The Final Fantasy VII series is full of awesome characters. The following folks play the largest roles, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily the best, coolest, or most important to the Crisis Core storyline. Well, except for Zack. Though several of the series' most colorful heroes and villains aren't listed here, we thought you might prefer to rediscover them in the course of your own fantastic voyage. And so, without further ado...

Cloud Strife
No Caption Provided Weapon: The Buster Sword
Role: Stoic Hero
Bed Head: Much

With spiky hair and a sword so big it would make Ron Jeremy jealous, Cloud Strife is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, rivaling mustachioed Mario or birthmarked Kratos for instant recognition. But who really knows this enigmatic hero? Certainly not Cloud himself. In fact, his own recollection of events is proven to be an illusion late in Final Fantasy VII. Was he really one of Shinra's elite warriors, a first class SOLDIER? Or was he something else entirely?

Aerith "Aeris" Gainsborough
No Caption Provided Job: Flower Girl
Role: Tragic Heroine
Random Fact: Aerith was voiced by Mandy Moore in the original Kingdom Hearts, as well as Mena Suvari in Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.

The girl you thought you knew as Aeris is actually named Aerith. Evidently, the designers of Final Fantasy VII intended to name her after the English term Earth, but something got mixed up in the double translation from English to Japanese then back again and she wound up as Aeris in Final Fantasy VII.

But a rose by any other name smells just as sweetly, and since you paid for the fantasy, you can call her whatever you want. Just don't call her mean, petty, or shallow because Aerith was a virtuous, pure hero and the last of a noble race, the Cetra. This being a Japanese role-playing game, you just knew something bad and vaguely sexual was going to happen to her. And if you didn't, you probably cried real tears when your awesome healer got impaled on Sephiroth's wimpy sword in Final Fantasy VII. Though she never came back to life as nerds worldwide hoped she would, her spirit swims on in the lifestream. Who knows what she does in there...possibly the butterfly stroke?

Tifa Lockhart
No Caption Provided Job: Bartender
Role: The Girl Next Door
Skirt: Mini

Tifa is the opposite of Aeris. Instead of a dress, she wears a miniskirt. Instead of flowers, she sells booze. And she isn't the last descendant of a holy race fated to save the planet with a dying prayer. Tifa is Cloud's former next door neighbor, a pedestrian village girl who kicks a** with her plain old boots. But in a series where the taint of a space alien queen threatens to pollute the metaphysical lifestream, her down-to-earth presence provides a refreshing breath of stale air. She'll never save the world, but she'll make it worth saving.

Sephiroth
No Caption Provided Likes: Hair conditioner
Dislikes: Everything else
One Bad: Mother

In the kabbalah (an ancient Hebrew text), the Sephiroth are God's identifying features. They generally include such noble things as wisdom, symmetry, and good table manners. In Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth has all the identifying features of villainy. He has long white hair. He wears a trench coat. He's androgynous. He has a cool name. He stabs nice girls. He wants to be God. And he doesn't just want to destroy the world, he wants to possess its soul. He was literally born to be bad, and that isn't just another careless use of the word "literally." Sephiroth is the biological son of the mad scientist Dr. Hojo and was treated with Jenova cells (think Gamma radiation, but evil) in utero. He puts the Crisis in Crisis Core.

Zack Fair
No Caption Provided Job: SOLDIER First Class
Role: Unknown SOLDIER
Girlfriend: Aerith

Who is Zack Fair? For starters, he's the main character in Crisis Core and a SOLDIER first class who joins Sephiroth on the Nibelheim mission. Remember the SOLDIER Aeris said she dated in Final Fantasy VII? No? He was also this guy. Remember the previous owner of Cloud's buster sword? Yeah, that's him too. We'd tell you more, but that would spoil half the fun of Crisis Core.

No Caption Provided

The Terms

Jenova
She's an intergalactic zombie hell queen bent on the corruption of all life and kept in a secret tank like the world's scariest gold fish by a company known as...

Shinra
Shinra is just your average everyday world-conquering energy company. It isn't evil, just greedy, and so it isn't destroying the planet on purpose, but rather, by accident. Its power source is mako, which is kind of like uranium, except instead of making cancer happen, it makes magic happen. Shinra is so crazy about mako that it unearths Jenova thinking she'll lead them to more. Hey, crazier things have been done for lower prices at the pump.

AVALANCHE
Like violent hippies with guns, swords, and magic, the members of AVALANCHE stand up for the little guys and gals Shinra is willing to walk all over on its way to more mako. But when the AVALANCHE gets wrapped up in the cosmic struggle between the spawn of Jenova and the lifestream, its political struggles become existential.

Lifestream
Lifestream looks like green vermicelli, and it can explain everything. Seriously, if you're ever on a video game quiz show and a hard question comes up about Final Fantasy VII, the answer is lifestream. It's like essence of miracle combined with the soul of the planet--plus pesto.

The Compilation

Once you finish Crisis Core, we're sure you'll be in the mood for more Final Fantasy, if only to see how the revelations contained within it color your understanding of the other entries in the Compilation. Don't forget to visit:

Final Fantasy VII
No Caption Provided

Final Fantasy VII didn't just start a series, it arguably started the PlayStation system. It also started with Cloud Strife joining a group known as AVALANCHE to stop the corrupt and wicked Shinra Corporation from ruining the planet. Then, things got weird. There were talking cats, giant chickens, houses with legs, an unexpected demise, and one of the craziest evil plots of all time. Sephiroth was going to call a meteor down to hit the planet and, then, when lifestream (if the opposite of entropy existed as water) poured into the gash like blood, he'd be waiting to fuse with it, taking over the soul of the planet. Why did we stop this again?

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
No Caption Provided

A third-person shooter/RPG, Dirge of Cerberus takes place after the events of Final Fantasy VII and chronicles the attempt of an organization known as Deepground to damage the earth, as well as summon a big weapon, which will then wreak even further havoc. The only man in its way is the enigmatic Vincent Valentine, the pseudovampire gunslinger. With the help of the rest of the Final Fantasy VII cast, he battles Deepground while unearthing new details about Sephiroth's mother and Doctor Hojo.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
No Caption Provided

This awesome CGI action flick covers the period after AVALANCHE stopped the meteor from wrecking the planet. It also includes a trio of new villains, a ridiculously fun fight with Bahamut in the city of Midgar, and appearances by the Final Fantasy VII cast. Most of the film follows Cloud as he attempts to rescue himself and the city's children from a mysterious disease, but the best part is a major battle with a certain white-haired villain you simply have to see if you consider yourself a Final fan in the slightest.

There's much more to Final Fantasy VII, including the short story collection On the Way to a Smile, the animated film Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (which chronicles many of the same events as Crisis Core), and an episodic mobile phone game called Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Some of these are easy to find, while others nearly impossible, but whether or not your Japanese is good enough to plumb the most exotic corners of Final Fantasy lore, you'll have plenty to chew on with the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. And after that, you may not have long to wait for more.

I can not wait for playing this awesome FF VII prequel , the FF VII was one of the best RPG in history , with a group of caracters very interesting , very emotional moments and Sephiroth , that is my favorite , and we have a chance to now a little bit more about him , Coud and Zack. For benleslie5 i found you a FFVII original platinum , but it is pal uk and you sould have Ntsc , anyway i will add the web link page, it is a spanish page but the game is from uk and its 60 euros , quite more cheap than in e-bay , the las time i saw it was like 200. http://www.chollogames.es/sistemas/playstation.asp?offset=45

so does anyone know where that scene of Red XIII running and roaring at Midgar 500 years later came from? No, not the original scene from FF7, the revamped graphics at the end of the video feature. Is that in Crisis Core or Advent Children?

Whats the point in this? FF7 wasnt' confusing if you played through everything and saw most of the content :/ and who didn't know on 2nd playthrough that Aeris' Ex-boyfriend was Zack? It was pretty obvious.. Haven't played crysis core yet but I deffo want to give it a look! give ff7 remake on ps3! then i'll be forced to buy 1!

@woods0419: Im from the UK and we have a store here called Gamestation, where I have seen several copies of FF7,8 and 9 for sale at arounr £25. If you're not from the UK try importing it from there somehow, rather than spending $400 on a copy. @Sokol4ever: I Agree 100%, I do not think there is any other game that deserves more respect than FFVII. The article also forgot to mention the anime based on FFVII called Last Order. It revolves around the event that took place in Nibelheim, involving Zack, Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth. It also forms the basis of Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. See if you can find a copy, it clears up the whole 'Cloud is a member of SOLDIER' thing.

In the past two weeks, several game journalists from IGN, 1up, Gamespot, and some European outlets have been talking about "something" that they just saw... something which blew them away, and is going to be "absolutely huge," but they can't talk about it yet. They have, however, confirmed that the game they saw will be announced in the next week or two. Considering that at the end of the video, Joe Dodson is practically winking at us all as he hints about the remake as much as he can... and can someone answer a question for me; what game is the Red XIII (500 years later..) sequence from? I looks like an exact remake of the final FMV from FFVII... was this a scene from Advent Children or Crisis Core? Because if not, well... we may have just witnessed a glimpse of the remake, but please, someone clear that up for us...

The least Playstation could do is to put Final Fantasy VII as a downloadable PS1 game from the Playstation Network. A PS3 remake of FFVII would be the most awesome thing to happen to Playstation in a long time. I know there are millions of fans out there that want a remake of FFVII or who have let go of their old FFVII and want to download it. Final Fantasy VII for the PS1 is nearly impossible to find (unless you want to pay over $400 for a new one on Amazon or Ebay). Honestly, what does it take for the people at Playstation to listen to the fans? Playstation is seriously lagging behind in the console wars and it's about time for Sony to actually retake some of that lost ground. A remake or a simple downloadable version of quite possibly Playstation's best game is the way to get back in the race.

Is anyone else sick of Final Fantasy VII yet? It's a great game and I love it but can't they just stop milking it and leave it alone and concentrate on getting XIII out. I thought it was better when Zack was a mystery.

Final Fantasy VII is a very deep, emotional and touching story. It also happens to be a superb JRPG that deserves a little bit more respect and attention that it certainly earned over the last 10 years in this post. The article while informative, isn't written well. It felt more like a joke or humor then actual on part of the story and characters then remembrance it deserves...

No, Mystic, IV is boring. It was most likely fun when it was released, but for all of us 17-year-olds, VII was not only among the best, but the start.

What? VII didn't start the series, hell VII isn't even in the top 5 Final Fantasies. IV was where the storytelling and the gameplay fundamentals of the series really peaked. IV was what, technically, started the series.

SquareEnix should make a game about Red XIII next. There is alot of potentail with his angle of the story. Then release a full remake of FF7 in like 5 years. 15 years is plenty of time to remake a game that is as excellent as this one.

Grouchy_Dude is on Crack. Its obvoius you dont know how to read well enough to enjoy that story. To this day FFVII is the best story ever in a video game. And if you think Mass Effect and Knights of the Old Republic have a better story then you sir are crazy. I've played through that game atleat 3 times logging well over 300 hours of play. That story alone was the most intriguing story ever in a game. It touch our hearts and brought us as close as we ever have to the charactors in a game,

This video is so spot on! I played Final Fantasy 7 when it first came out. Being new to the genre, I was excited to play it. As the game went on, it got so confusing and repetitious that I gave up near the end where I fought Sepheroth. The game was just a mess plot-wise, which is usually the main draw of role-playing games. For better games with better stories, try the recent Bio-ware games like Mass Effect, or Knights of the Old Republic.

This is how I think a remake would work: Updated graphics, great voice acting etc. And two options at the start. One to keep the battle system exactly the same as it was in the original. Next, some kind of updated system with a better challenge. Not an action RPG per se, but I dunno just something cool, new and different. This would have new Limit Breaks and such and the gameplay wouldn't be easy exploitable because FF7 was really devoid of challenge even back then. As good as the game was, the gameplay in FF7 was the worst thing about it IMNSHO. A lot more extra side-quests. This would have to be one of the longest games ever, clocking in at around 300 hours to beat the extra boss that would make Emerald & Ruby Weapon seem like a total joke. SCARLET would have to be an extra BOSS FIGHT because she rocks. There'd also have to be AT LEAST two more continents. It would have to be massive and really WOW you at the size. Also, you should be able to discover all of the extras w/o buying some strategy guide. It should be kind of simple and straight to the point but still feel non-linear and epic at the same time. Some secrets take more brain power than others, but nothing should feel like they're trying to be whores getting you to pay an extra $15 for the strategy guide. There would also have to be better and funner ways to get your characters maxed out stats (required for the last boss) than just grinding those one monsters like in the original. They would be diversified throughout the entire game. You'd get some by Chocobo Breeding, just visiting a new/hidden area, treasure chests, some from fighting and stealing from monsters. Also new and better materia. Make them give regen more of a point. But still that 'just for fun' materia as that's needed as well. And of course, the last boss would still be a challenge even when you know all what to do. Aeris shouldn't be ressurected, but there should be a side-quest where you try, but she comes back evil and a 'shadow shell' of her original self (come on her death would be meanlingless if you could revive her). Dark Aerith would be a challenging boss indeed, auto-healing most of your damage so you'd have to throw the most powerful offensive abilities at her each turn before as she can Disable materia (a new ability) and cast Mega-Death so you can't automatically revive yourself. I'll think of more stuff later.

Amazing.... Square is still milking this game for all its worth. And Still there are people rushing out to get a pre-ordered copy........ IS there anything else about this story that can be further exploited? IS this all there is???? One game thats it..... Makes one wonder, where have the brilliant minds gone that could create a game that would maintain interest for 10 years. Oh, and on the slacker point, Dirge did suck. The CG scenes were the only thing keeping me going.....

The story in Crisis Core leads you right to the beginning of Final Fantasy VII, and indeed, drops you off. There seems to be no point in doing this (to me) unless there was a way to get the "next" part of the story into the hands of gamers that play Crisis Core. Considering that Final Fantasy VII(PS) is no longer on store shelves, anywhere, not even Gamestop, the only place to find a copy would be on E-bay. However, I don't think even Square has managed to find a way to charge people for selling used copies of their old video games, so to fill the sudden urge to play Final Fantasy VII that gamers, who both know and don't know the storyline, are getting right now (myself included) Square will find some way to release the game so they can make money off of it. I can just imagine the size downloading it off the PS store would be if the tried to go that route with the original. And any release of the old game would be shooting themselves in the foot at this point, after all the tech demo's and video's showing a fully rendered Cloud. Any re-release of Final Fantasy VII became Next-gen as soon as Advent Children hit the shelves. I know a lot of people aren't going to be happy with cartoony little Cloud rolling around with cartoony little Barrett. "This is S#!&" as the gun armed bandit would say. So I happily now live in my own little world with the firm knowledge that a release of a Full PS3 version of Final Fantasy VII is now imminent.

Wish the guy would've touched some more on the crazyness and nonsense that is FFVII, still a good game though. And look! Gamespots hired a likable guy! WOW way to go, thought it'd never happen, you know, with Kevin van Ord and all. >_>

13hadokens, You can't say that they just remade that to show off the graphics because there were many other games in development at the time that had graphics that would blow the ones they showed in that tech demo out of the water. RFOM maybe? I'm sure that they are really making this game, and depending on how much they are adding or if they are just simply remaking it will be out within the next 2 years if not sooner. I know square-enix has half a brain to remake most likely their best-seller of all time especially when there is such a large calling for it. So keep the faith and enjoy when they announce it.
