Final Fantasy VII: Franchise Player

Looking forward to Crisis Core but don't remember the difference between a Jenova and a Shinra? This feature has all you need to get back up to speed.

Final Fantasy VII is a misleading title. In fact, the game is about as final as a midterm, and though its title labels it the seventh game in one series, it also marks the first entry in a growing series of its own, known as the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The latest addition to this ever growing library is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the story of a SOLDIER mission to the rustic town of Nibelheim.

This should sound somewhat familiar because the original Final Fantasy VII's most mind-bending plot twist centered on Cloud's shattered memories of this event. But if the details are hazy, fret not, for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII picks up the pieces to tell the story of an unknown soldier named Zack, while shedding new firelight on the downfall of Sephiroth. Unfortunately, the original came out so long ago that you may not remember what any of this had to do with the price of Mako in Midgar. Cue Franchise Player!

The Cast

The Final Fantasy VII series is full of awesome characters. The following folks play the largest roles, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily the best, coolest, or most important to the Crisis Core storyline. Well, except for Zack. Though several of the series' most colorful heroes and villains aren't listed here, we thought you might prefer to rediscover them in the course of your own fantastic voyage. And so, without further ado...

Cloud Strife
No Caption Provided Weapon: The Buster Sword
Role: Stoic Hero
Bed Head: Much

With spiky hair and a sword so big it would make Ron Jeremy jealous, Cloud Strife is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, rivaling mustachioed Mario or birthmarked Kratos for instant recognition. But who really knows this enigmatic hero? Certainly not Cloud himself. In fact, his own recollection of events is proven to be an illusion late in Final Fantasy VII. Was he really one of Shinra's elite warriors, a first class SOLDIER? Or was he something else entirely?

Aerith "Aeris" Gainsborough
No Caption Provided Job: Flower Girl
Role: Tragic Heroine
Random Fact: Aerith was voiced by Mandy Moore in the original Kingdom Hearts, as well as Mena Suvari in Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.

The girl you thought you knew as Aeris is actually named Aerith. Evidently, the designers of Final Fantasy VII intended to name her after the English term Earth, but something got mixed up in the double translation from English to Japanese then back again and she wound up as Aeris in Final Fantasy VII.

But a rose by any other name smells just as sweetly, and since you paid for the fantasy, you can call her whatever you want. Just don't call her mean, petty, or shallow because Aerith was a virtuous, pure hero and the last of a noble race, the Cetra. This being a Japanese role-playing game, you just knew something bad and vaguely sexual was going to happen to her. And if you didn't, you probably cried real tears when your awesome healer got impaled on Sephiroth's wimpy sword in Final Fantasy VII. Though she never came back to life as nerds worldwide hoped she would, her spirit swims on in the lifestream. Who knows what she does in there...possibly the butterfly stroke?

Tifa Lockhart
No Caption Provided Job: Bartender
Role: The Girl Next Door
Skirt: Mini

Tifa is the opposite of Aeris. Instead of a dress, she wears a miniskirt. Instead of flowers, she sells booze. And she isn't the last descendant of a holy race fated to save the planet with a dying prayer. Tifa is Cloud's former next door neighbor, a pedestrian village girl who kicks a** with her plain old boots. But in a series where the taint of a space alien queen threatens to pollute the metaphysical lifestream, her down-to-earth presence provides a refreshing breath of stale air. She'll never save the world, but she'll make it worth saving.

Sephiroth
No Caption Provided Likes: Hair conditioner
Dislikes: Everything else
One Bad: Mother

In the kabbalah (an ancient Hebrew text), the Sephiroth are God's identifying features. They generally include such noble things as wisdom, symmetry, and good table manners. In Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth has all the identifying features of villainy. He has long white hair. He wears a trench coat. He's androgynous. He has a cool name. He stabs nice girls. He wants to be God. And he doesn't just want to destroy the world, he wants to possess its soul. He was literally born to be bad, and that isn't just another careless use of the word "literally." Sephiroth is the biological son of the mad scientist Dr. Hojo and was treated with Jenova cells (think Gamma radiation, but evil) in utero. He puts the Crisis in Crisis Core.

Zack Fair
No Caption Provided Job: SOLDIER First Class
Role: Unknown SOLDIER
Girlfriend: Aerith

Who is Zack Fair? For starters, he's the main character in Crisis Core and a SOLDIER first class who joins Sephiroth on the Nibelheim mission. Remember the SOLDIER Aeris said she dated in Final Fantasy VII? No? He was also this guy. Remember the previous owner of Cloud's buster sword? Yeah, that's him too. We'd tell you more, but that would spoil half the fun of Crisis Core.

No Caption Provided

The Terms

Jenova
She's an intergalactic zombie hell queen bent on the corruption of all life and kept in a secret tank like the world's scariest gold fish by a company known as...

Shinra
Shinra is just your average everyday world-conquering energy company. It isn't evil, just greedy, and so it isn't destroying the planet on purpose, but rather, by accident. Its power source is mako, which is kind of like uranium, except instead of making cancer happen, it makes magic happen. Shinra is so crazy about mako that it unearths Jenova thinking she'll lead them to more. Hey, crazier things have been done for lower prices at the pump.

AVALANCHE
Like violent hippies with guns, swords, and magic, the members of AVALANCHE stand up for the little guys and gals Shinra is willing to walk all over on its way to more mako. But when the AVALANCHE gets wrapped up in the cosmic struggle between the spawn of Jenova and the lifestream, its political struggles become existential.

Lifestream
Lifestream looks like green vermicelli, and it can explain everything. Seriously, if you're ever on a video game quiz show and a hard question comes up about Final Fantasy VII, the answer is lifestream. It's like essence of miracle combined with the soul of the planet--plus pesto.

The Compilation

Once you finish Crisis Core, we're sure you'll be in the mood for more Final Fantasy, if only to see how the revelations contained within it color your understanding of the other entries in the Compilation. Don't forget to visit:

Final Fantasy VII
No Caption Provided

Final Fantasy VII didn't just start a series, it arguably started the PlayStation system. It also started with Cloud Strife joining a group known as AVALANCHE to stop the corrupt and wicked Shinra Corporation from ruining the planet. Then, things got weird. There were talking cats, giant chickens, houses with legs, an unexpected demise, and one of the craziest evil plots of all time. Sephiroth was going to call a meteor down to hit the planet and, then, when lifestream (if the opposite of entropy existed as water) poured into the gash like blood, he'd be waiting to fuse with it, taking over the soul of the planet. Why did we stop this again?

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
No Caption Provided

A third-person shooter/RPG, Dirge of Cerberus takes place after the events of Final Fantasy VII and chronicles the attempt of an organization known as Deepground to damage the earth, as well as summon a big weapon, which will then wreak even further havoc. The only man in its way is the enigmatic Vincent Valentine, the pseudovampire gunslinger. With the help of the rest of the Final Fantasy VII cast, he battles Deepground while unearthing new details about Sephiroth's mother and Doctor Hojo.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
No Caption Provided

This awesome CGI action flick covers the period after AVALANCHE stopped the meteor from wrecking the planet. It also includes a trio of new villains, a ridiculously fun fight with Bahamut in the city of Midgar, and appearances by the Final Fantasy VII cast. Most of the film follows Cloud as he attempts to rescue himself and the city's children from a mysterious disease, but the best part is a major battle with a certain white-haired villain you simply have to see if you consider yourself a Final fan in the slightest.

There's much more to Final Fantasy VII, including the short story collection On the Way to a Smile, the animated film Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (which chronicles many of the same events as Crisis Core), and an episodic mobile phone game called Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Some of these are easy to find, while others nearly impossible, but whether or not your Japanese is good enough to plumb the most exotic corners of Final Fantasy lore, you'll have plenty to chew on with the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. And after that, you may not have long to wait for more.

This game is blast considering mind-bending story. All the movies I watch after playing FF games, just get *sigh* from me. FF VII story needs a round-up. I hope it will get it sometimes in this century.

I love FFVII as much as the rest of the fans here but I think that we should consider the possibility (and by possibility I mean FACT) that FFVII is not going to be re-made. To the woes of many hardcore fans, such as myself I might add, but reality dictates that a re-make just doesn’t make good business sense. Consider that the number of people who would re-play a game where the only difference is updated graphics and maybe voice acting is basically limited to the hardcore fans, everyone else has already seen the story and use the system and are on to the next new thing. To be fair, the story was convoluted and under-explained and the only way it makes any sense is if you fill in the blanks with your own imagination. And for those who haven’t played the original, the system would be outdated and not interactive enough. I’m not a fan of the realtime rpgs so much but I’m also not stupid enough to ignore that the general public does like them and an industry concerned with making money will cater to that. So a game that is outdate will do poorly with today’s gamers and any adjustments will surely cause an outcry from the veterans. Squar would be stuck between a rock and a hard place, and these are only a couple of the reasons. I think that we the fans must face reality at some point, no matter how painful, and accept that some games will do better where they are. With tears in our eyes we must say that the rest of the “Shenmue” games will never be made, we will not likely see a sequel or prequel to “Skies of Arcadia”, and Final Fantasy VII will not see and official re-make. : ( We should stop the whining, the bashing, and the flaming and just be glad for what we have.

they should not remake the original. they should re-release it for DLC for ps3 and 360. it doesn't need a complete makeover, it just needs a little touch up on the graphics so it doesn't look retarded.

I don't like this guy. Every video I've seen of his was annoying. Anyway I hope squenix remakes FF7 with a different/extended ending and stuff from other FF games but roughly the same story. I'm glad I picked this game (for psone) instead of tomb raider 2 since I never played a final fantasy game before.

Duh... What the hell with the Franchise Player? It was funny, yes. However totally pointless. Vincent is NOT a vampire. Sleeping in the coffin does not make you one and coffin symbolizes something totally different then being an undead bloodsucking monster. Jeez. FFVII is complicated game, yes, but in the end everything perfectly makes sense. Especially when you all the time talk to everyone and all that stuff. He replayed it 8 times and still did not understand anything? If it is not a joke, I pity the person. Spin - offs are wonderful. I adore Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core is a lot of fun and the little explanations both games bring are fantastic. And I like having games from different POV of different characters. Never really liked to play as Cloud >. However, even though I am ranting, the video made me laugh. Prescious Hippie reference. x3

Final Fantasy VII Is clearly the best series and I do not understand why square do these odd off shoots while nice just do not quite cut it. Why on earth do a strange while good psp off shoot when everyone has been demanding FFVII for psp just as a port since the psp came to life (by the way what ever happend to gran torismo? lol) A Final Fantasy VII PS3 version with better graphics same format but just looking as sexy as possible would do just as well as a new one in terms of sales

The video was hilarious. I think a remake of FFVII is badly needed because despite the fact that I think it is one of the best games ever created, the new story stuff from all of the compilation games, and the updated graphics/CGI has pretty much rendered FFVII obsolete. A remake is needed to round off this compilation and make it complete.

1. YES! I still have a copy of the original! W00t! Played and beaten 7 times (I know, that's horrible for my social skills, but whatever I love this game). 2. When the remake comes out is when I'll buy a PS3. If they make it for Xbox 360, then yay, I'll go buy teh game! 3. Anyone who doesn't understand why this game is so amazing and well liked, that's fine. Just give it a chance, at least play to the end of disc 3. I guarantee by then you'll be intrigued. If you don't have enough patience then I guess you're missing out. 4. This video was hilarious! Let's inject some babies with it, or whatever he said, truly hilarious. 5. The music for this game literally makes me high. I don't know, but I get super happy. It's like I took ecstasy or something. Great game music. Sorry, really, really, really, truly, deeply, love this game. Probably all-time favorite. That's just my opinion.

People are so quick to disregard a FFVII remake; as if they have any idea. The truth is, a FFVII remake would move whatever system it comes out on as well as meet or exceed the original's sales. While that is my personal estimate, I think it's a fairly firm estimate. The game was stellar, and Square has the technical know-how and resources to resurrect it in style. Also, giving a game flak for not feeling like another game is ridiculous--even if they are in the same series. After all it is a different game, and the events and characters are usually quite different. All of the FF7 games have different gamesplay mechanics for Pete's sake. It's ironic to me when some complain about such things, when those same people would point out how the games were too much alike if they rehashed the game with just an altered storyline. Feel is all perception anyway, and all of these follow-ups have taken place from different points of view at different periods in time with drastically different play mechanics. Few applaud the risks Square has taken for all of the FF7 follow-ups, which leads me to worry about how people perceive creativity. They could have rehashed FF7's gameplay twice over with the two new game releases but they decided to push themselves to branch out; serving fans of the series AND bringing new types of gamers to the FF7 universe with a shooter and action-RPG. Personally, I may be bias. I think anything FF7 is money; and I'm happy to play whatever comes out in that universe. I'm too hardcore of a gamer overall to play crap, but none of these games have set off my crap detector (Dirge really could have been better; but Square was making what is basically their first shooter). Crisis Core is a work of art all in itself; so as much as I could admit bias: it might just be rooted in the fact that these games have some serious polish. My point: The follow-up games are original, but rooted in a colorful universe. They are fan-service as well as damn fine games standing on their own. Also, a remake would cause me to buy the system it's on; as well as a copy of the remake itself--and I'm not anywhere close to being alone in that. As long as Square knows that, there is ALWAYS a chance the game would be remade. Obviously, they haven't forgot about FF7 with all the new games :-)

I think Square-Enix would be utterly stupid to not make a remake of FFVII. It would sell HUGELY, and all they would need to do is overhaul the graphics and add voiceovers. Leave everything else alone. Don't update their outfits, don't change the battle system, nothing. Leave it be. I would like to see it for the PS3, given the whole tech demo thing. If it were a PSP game, I would still get it, but I think many would much rather have it for a console. I mean, FFVII isn't exactly as much of an "on-the-go" game as Crisis Core is. So, Square, start developing now. I beat Crisis Core and would love to see an update of the original.

@SephirothSyZtem- OK so yeah, you do make a game to get money...i understand that. But come on...doesn't have the final fantasy vii feel? true its not the same type of game...but during the sections of the game when you are in Midgar, i could definitley feel some of the vibe. dirge on the other hand...blech i could hardly make it through that game. terrible.

It's not a question of if they are going to do a remake, it's a question of when. It wouldn't surprise me if it was released in time for a 15 year anniversary or something of the sort. The crew is no doubt busy working on both FF13s and possible KH3. The problem with square though is they don't pony up any info on games until they are pretty much released so we won't hear anything about this until like 2010

I hear you trick6952. That would totally bring life back into the game. And maybe they could add a few, not a lot of additions to fill in the story, but absoulouty nothing more. I hate when games go and add altered story lines of the original.

galerian - timeline of the story itself. There aren't any plot twists I'm worried about spoiling lol

belwyrm By playing the compilation in chronological order, do you mean time it was release or the timeline of the story itself. Anyway, a good way for many people to familiarise themselves with the story. Great job Gamespot. And vdarkfall999, bug off man.

Its cool to learn this stuff about FF 7, but Square it feels like you are milking us on ur hit title. Lets see a bad guy as cool as Sephiroth.
