Final Fantasy VII: Franchise Player

Looking forward to Crisis Core but don't remember the difference between a Jenova and a Shinra? This feature has all you need to get back up to speed.

Final Fantasy VII is a misleading title. In fact, the game is about as final as a midterm, and though its title labels it the seventh game in one series, it also marks the first entry in a growing series of its own, known as the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. The latest addition to this ever growing library is Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, the story of a SOLDIER mission to the rustic town of Nibelheim.

This should sound somewhat familiar because the original Final Fantasy VII's most mind-bending plot twist centered on Cloud's shattered memories of this event. But if the details are hazy, fret not, for Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII picks up the pieces to tell the story of an unknown soldier named Zack, while shedding new firelight on the downfall of Sephiroth. Unfortunately, the original came out so long ago that you may not remember what any of this had to do with the price of Mako in Midgar. Cue Franchise Player!

The Cast

The Final Fantasy VII series is full of awesome characters. The following folks play the largest roles, but that doesn't mean they are necessarily the best, coolest, or most important to the Crisis Core storyline. Well, except for Zack. Though several of the series' most colorful heroes and villains aren't listed here, we thought you might prefer to rediscover them in the course of your own fantastic voyage. And so, without further ado...

Cloud Strife
No Caption Provided Weapon: The Buster Sword
Role: Stoic Hero
Bed Head: Much

With spiky hair and a sword so big it would make Ron Jeremy jealous, Cloud Strife is one of the most iconic video game characters of all time, rivaling mustachioed Mario or birthmarked Kratos for instant recognition. But who really knows this enigmatic hero? Certainly not Cloud himself. In fact, his own recollection of events is proven to be an illusion late in Final Fantasy VII. Was he really one of Shinra's elite warriors, a first class SOLDIER? Or was he something else entirely?

Aerith "Aeris" Gainsborough
No Caption Provided Job: Flower Girl
Role: Tragic Heroine
Random Fact: Aerith was voiced by Mandy Moore in the original Kingdom Hearts, as well as Mena Suvari in Kingdom Hearts II and Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.

The girl you thought you knew as Aeris is actually named Aerith. Evidently, the designers of Final Fantasy VII intended to name her after the English term Earth, but something got mixed up in the double translation from English to Japanese then back again and she wound up as Aeris in Final Fantasy VII.

But a rose by any other name smells just as sweetly, and since you paid for the fantasy, you can call her whatever you want. Just don't call her mean, petty, or shallow because Aerith was a virtuous, pure hero and the last of a noble race, the Cetra. This being a Japanese role-playing game, you just knew something bad and vaguely sexual was going to happen to her. And if you didn't, you probably cried real tears when your awesome healer got impaled on Sephiroth's wimpy sword in Final Fantasy VII. Though she never came back to life as nerds worldwide hoped she would, her spirit swims on in the lifestream. Who knows what she does in there...possibly the butterfly stroke?

Tifa Lockhart
No Caption Provided Job: Bartender
Role: The Girl Next Door
Skirt: Mini

Tifa is the opposite of Aeris. Instead of a dress, she wears a miniskirt. Instead of flowers, she sells booze. And she isn't the last descendant of a holy race fated to save the planet with a dying prayer. Tifa is Cloud's former next door neighbor, a pedestrian village girl who kicks a** with her plain old boots. But in a series where the taint of a space alien queen threatens to pollute the metaphysical lifestream, her down-to-earth presence provides a refreshing breath of stale air. She'll never save the world, but she'll make it worth saving.

Sephiroth
No Caption Provided Likes: Hair conditioner
Dislikes: Everything else
One Bad: Mother

In the kabbalah (an ancient Hebrew text), the Sephiroth are God's identifying features. They generally include such noble things as wisdom, symmetry, and good table manners. In Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth has all the identifying features of villainy. He has long white hair. He wears a trench coat. He's androgynous. He has a cool name. He stabs nice girls. He wants to be God. And he doesn't just want to destroy the world, he wants to possess its soul. He was literally born to be bad, and that isn't just another careless use of the word "literally." Sephiroth is the biological son of the mad scientist Dr. Hojo and was treated with Jenova cells (think Gamma radiation, but evil) in utero. He puts the Crisis in Crisis Core.

Zack Fair
No Caption Provided Job: SOLDIER First Class
Role: Unknown SOLDIER
Girlfriend: Aerith

Who is Zack Fair? For starters, he's the main character in Crisis Core and a SOLDIER first class who joins Sephiroth on the Nibelheim mission. Remember the SOLDIER Aeris said she dated in Final Fantasy VII? No? He was also this guy. Remember the previous owner of Cloud's buster sword? Yeah, that's him too. We'd tell you more, but that would spoil half the fun of Crisis Core.

No Caption Provided

The Terms

Jenova
She's an intergalactic zombie hell queen bent on the corruption of all life and kept in a secret tank like the world's scariest gold fish by a company known as...

Shinra
Shinra is just your average everyday world-conquering energy company. It isn't evil, just greedy, and so it isn't destroying the planet on purpose, but rather, by accident. Its power source is mako, which is kind of like uranium, except instead of making cancer happen, it makes magic happen. Shinra is so crazy about mako that it unearths Jenova thinking she'll lead them to more. Hey, crazier things have been done for lower prices at the pump.

AVALANCHE
Like violent hippies with guns, swords, and magic, the members of AVALANCHE stand up for the little guys and gals Shinra is willing to walk all over on its way to more mako. But when the AVALANCHE gets wrapped up in the cosmic struggle between the spawn of Jenova and the lifestream, its political struggles become existential.

Lifestream
Lifestream looks like green vermicelli, and it can explain everything. Seriously, if you're ever on a video game quiz show and a hard question comes up about Final Fantasy VII, the answer is lifestream. It's like essence of miracle combined with the soul of the planet--plus pesto.

The Compilation

Once you finish Crisis Core, we're sure you'll be in the mood for more Final Fantasy, if only to see how the revelations contained within it color your understanding of the other entries in the Compilation. Don't forget to visit:

Final Fantasy VII
No Caption Provided

Final Fantasy VII didn't just start a series, it arguably started the PlayStation system. It also started with Cloud Strife joining a group known as AVALANCHE to stop the corrupt and wicked Shinra Corporation from ruining the planet. Then, things got weird. There were talking cats, giant chickens, houses with legs, an unexpected demise, and one of the craziest evil plots of all time. Sephiroth was going to call a meteor down to hit the planet and, then, when lifestream (if the opposite of entropy existed as water) poured into the gash like blood, he'd be waiting to fuse with it, taking over the soul of the planet. Why did we stop this again?

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
No Caption Provided

A third-person shooter/RPG, Dirge of Cerberus takes place after the events of Final Fantasy VII and chronicles the attempt of an organization known as Deepground to damage the earth, as well as summon a big weapon, which will then wreak even further havoc. The only man in its way is the enigmatic Vincent Valentine, the pseudovampire gunslinger. With the help of the rest of the Final Fantasy VII cast, he battles Deepground while unearthing new details about Sephiroth's mother and Doctor Hojo.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
No Caption Provided

This awesome CGI action flick covers the period after AVALANCHE stopped the meteor from wrecking the planet. It also includes a trio of new villains, a ridiculously fun fight with Bahamut in the city of Midgar, and appearances by the Final Fantasy VII cast. Most of the film follows Cloud as he attempts to rescue himself and the city's children from a mysterious disease, but the best part is a major battle with a certain white-haired villain you simply have to see if you consider yourself a Final fan in the slightest.

There's much more to Final Fantasy VII, including the short story collection On the Way to a Smile, the animated film Last Order: Final Fantasy VII (which chronicles many of the same events as Crisis Core), and an episodic mobile phone game called Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII. Some of these are easy to find, while others nearly impossible, but whether or not your Japanese is good enough to plumb the most exotic corners of Final Fantasy lore, you'll have plenty to chew on with the release of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. And after that, you may not have long to wait for more.

It's kinda funny back when I saw the Tech Demo for FFVII I e-mailed SE through their customer contact and suggestions or whatever it was. The response I got way back then was basically (paraphrased I don't have the original e-mail any more.) "We appreciate your interest in the Final Fantasy VII remake but as it stands now development is working on other projects. At this time we will not be working a remake of Final Fantasy VII but depending on the popularity of that concept we may be able to consider it." They worded it a bit more vaguely then that but the key thing is they said depending on fans they'd basically consider. The oddest part was usually 99% companies have automated responses. So I wonder if Square-Enix was getting inundated by FFVII remake requests.

I would just like to point out that one of the guys from the IGN Playstation team went to Japan a few weeks ago to see something really big that they couldn't talk about, and now this guy says we "may not have long to wait for more." Sounds like Square might have been showing the remake to the press. I could be completely wrong, but I really hope I'm not.

@Treifla I think you have an awfully bleak look at a remake. Resident Evil for Gamecube was excellent, Metal Gear Solid for Gamecube was great the problem is they didn't sell well because the Gamecube didn't have a big enough base and they were only separated by one generation of consoles. FFVII has a whole new generation to market towards. Crystal Tools is going to be working on all 3 consoles soon. It's unlikely that we'd see FFVII on Wii imo but PS3 & 360 that's already a big console base. As for change extreme fanboys they will get over it or not buy it. Most likely anyone who'll think the changes are bad will have bought it most likely because they're FFVII fanboys. Hell I'm a bit of one, Dirge got blasted review wise and tbh the game play was mediocre at best but to me it was worth it just to get the extra storylines and seeing stuff like the shinra mansion in better graphics. If you're a true fan of the series then you'll always have your precious copy of the original you can always load it up and feel the nostalgia of the original. Advent Children was great though so I don't see how there's so much doom gloom about a remake. Can anyone tell me why these comments constantly combine paragraphs? It's really pissing me off.

Such an awesome game. Too bad they made Dirge of Cerberus. Everybody said that was gonna rock, like a remake. But Dirge of Cerberus sucked. I have no problem with Advent Children, it was pretty sweet, but there should have been more fighting and plot twists like the game. Hopefully Crisis Core is actually good and makes sense in adding to the story, unlike Dirge of Cerberus where they went out on a limb, and plummeted to their death with a completely irrelevant story that had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH THE ORIGINAL GAME, save characters and a little bit of plot. Dirge of Cerberus got a rating of like 6 on this site. Does that concern anyone as much as it does me? If you want a graphics upgrade and that's it, I'm playing the original to day and it's still beautiful when you consider when it was made. The graphics were revolutionary back then, and sure they suck when you pit it against something like Call of Duty 4, but there is a 10 year difference. They shouldn't just juice a good title for all it's worth, cause those of us who actually appreciate the game will probably go suicidal because of the blasphemy.

for all of you asking for a new FF7. i think you may be waiting for a while. it SEEMS like a good idea, a new FF7, everybody will love it right? it'll make lots of money, it's a shoe-in right? the problem is that it wont. sure it'll be acclaimed all over the world, IF they don't screw it up. now that's the problem, how do they remake the game and not screw it up? they could just re-do the graphics and leave it at that, if they don't change something great then it will stay great right? but what about the people who wanted more out of the game, just upping the graphics seems nothing more then a shallow grab at more money. What if they try a new combat system? no matter what merits it has, that would fail. in fact, any change would fail. if they don't change it, it'll suck because there is nothing different, if they do change it, people will argue that they should have never touched what was so great, it can't work. you could p[ose the argument that no matter what it will make money, which is probably true. there are two more things stopping them however. first off, money is useless when a crazed fanboy jumps through you window at night stabbing you in the throat because you had the AUDACITY to make yuffie USEFUL *GASP*. the second problem is that when the original game comes out, the money train ENDS. any other attempts at a spin off will be met with scorn along the lines of "oh, well they are just out to make more money, i'm sick of this". in short. remaking the game would be like trying to rewrite the bible. sure, you will get your fair share of followers. but how long will it be before the Spaniards get pi§§ed off and try to shove an armada down your throat?

Man I hope they are still considering remaking FFVII for PS3 (hell even multiplatform.) I know there's a lot of people against it but it'd help bring a whole new generation to FF imo. If there's a game in Square-Enix that deserves a upgrade it's FFVII. New graphics, add a bit more interactivity and strategy in combat, flesh out a few more side quests for new materia, armor, and really tough fights, and possibly add another hidden character (doesn't even have to make sense think Final Fantasy Tactics.) Also wth they listed like 5 characters from FFVII explaining who people are like c'mon.

Are you guys aware that there are some people who know nothing of FF 7 and haven't had the chance to play it because they don't feel like spending $65 + for it. Also all a remake would do is make the graphics prettier. I don't really see the point of a remake unless it was never released in NA. Work on some new games of quality equivalent to your work in the 90s and early 00s SquareEnix instead of releasing half ass games and milking FF7

No joke, the story is NOT impossible to understand by just playing the original alone. Best game of all time, and it's time to leave it alone before it gets out of hand.

Just getting started on CC, and getting a little swept up in learning the story. I read about how it is hard to find FF7 nowadays without paying a premium. I started weighing whether I would fork out 70 bucks for a 10 year old game just for some answers. Then I thought, do I already own this game?? Went and looked at my game collection and turns out I do own it! Don't you love it when you pleasantly surprise yourself?

the answeres are all CLEARLY in the game...... you just need an interest in philosophy and about 7 playthroughs to fully get it all...... jury is still out on wether or not it was worth it but really, the game isn't all that hard to understand, but it's pretty clear the dude in this video just didn't.

okay, this might seem stupid, But I've played all the final fantasy 7 spin off's BUT Final Fantasy VII itself. Tje graphics are so bad and old that the game doesn't seem fun playing, or looking at (Sorry, if I offended someone). Point is, when is the FFVII remake coming? They've already made so many FFVII spin offs with good graphics, probably have all the technology to do it, people are hungry for it, and they even made us see a tech demo (Heck, I bought a ps3 because I thought that game was coming out soon)...

I'd like to see a compilation of Final Fantasy VIII or IX start up. ( Guess we sorta get something along those lines with Dissida...) As for a VII remake, I would be perfectly content with simply minor graphical improvements (ex. Final Fantasy I - VI remakes) and AC and CC quality cut-scenes on either PS3 or PSP. Then again, I would be perfectly happy with a completely reworked combat system and modern graphics - on either PS3 or PSP. No matter what they do to a remake, the original is still there. (If they change it, I'd just like to see it included, maybe on one PS3 compatible Blu Ray along with the remake... since its so rare and expensive these days). Then again, there is entirely the possibility that they will never remake Final Fantasy VII. I would have to say, Square-Enix would loose out on a fortune... with so many rabid fanbois craving it.

Most. Overrrated. Game. Ever. Oh yeah. Square, how about you keep working on FF13 so it comes out relatively soon, or work on new RPGs, like when you released Chrono Trigger & Chrono Cross, Vagrant Story, even Parasite Eve, instead of retreading FF7.

FFVII was OK. I've been talked to death many times over about VII and why I should love it, I own the GH version that I got for $14 back when you could find new PS1 games. I bought it because I loved FFVIII and was hoping for more of the same, and I was extremely disappointed. For its time its a fairly solid RPG, it just feels too clunky to play now a days though as it was in the infancy of console 3D graphics, I missed the oppurtunity to play this at its peak, and I'm pretty glad that I did. This having been said, Dirge sucked, Advent Children was watchable, and I honestly want to play Crisis Core if only to "resolve some conflicts".

I've played FF 1, 7,8,9,10,11,12 and they are all freaking great. As funny as it sounds I think Cloud and Sephiroth's weapons have alot to do with its popularity as well as it’s the first on the PS1. It’s also the best balanced in terms of magical powers versus physical abilities allowing for more diverse gameplay and attacks. My personal favorite is FF9 though. And yes I am patiently waiting on the PS3 versions and an updated FFVII

A remake of FFVII would be awesome... but.. there is one thing I am worried about... and that is the combat system. Now, say whatever you want about FF x2 but the ATB system in that game is super awesome.. and if you compare it to the ATB of FFVII... I have to say that FFVIIs simply is dull.. so the problem lies there.. cause I sort of have the feeling that the true FFVII fans (of which there are many) will freak out if they change a single thing from the original.. including the combat system (or maybe I'm wrong.. I don't know)... But I really hope that they update it if a remake ever is made.

@somadude Most copies of FF7 goes for $50+ almost no matter where you look. But if you get lucky for a copy, look for the Greatest Hits version. The original version has a nasty glitch toward the end of the game.

Technically all the FF7 things we got is...FF7(are you willing to spend $70 dollars for a broken used copy?)FF7 Dirge of Cerbarus(skip it it sucked)FF7 advent children(feels like a faky Japanese samurai movie(but it still rocks)) And Crisis Core(obliviously) but if you dont want to find out Cloud wass mentally insane and he lives his life through others(he wanted Barrret to check out HIS new gun arm) then you should stick to the first 2 discs of FF7 ONLY!!!! Al the others listed here are pretty imposible to get(Last Order can be seen on You tube wit english subs) all the others impothibol. Thats you guide to the dos-and-donts of the FF7 universe

Tell me again why this article was necessary? They act like there's this huge amount of companion content for FF VII and then you look at it and there's 2 games and a movie. And a hint of the likelihood of other stuff coming at some point. Great job, GS.

That's how you're supposed to feel. I thought I knew what was going on like 4 times playing that game.
