Final Fantasy XIII tops UK chart

The Square-Enix developed RPG takes number one on the British sales chart and becomes the fastest selling game of the year; Modern Warfare 2 hits number two in the all-time chart.

Unwilling to allow EA to hold the title for more than a week, the latest addition to Square Enix's flagship series this week became the fastest selling game of 2010 in the UK. The PlayStation 3 version of Final Fantasy XIII accounted for the lion's share of those sales, too--54 percent of sales came on Sony's platform, according to the British media sales tracking body Chart-Track.

The first Final Fantasy game to appear on the current generation of home consoles pushes Battlefield: Bad Company 2 down to number two, a mere week after the first-person shooter gained the coveted top spot. Final Fantasy XIII takes with it the title of fastest selling game of the year in the UK; a fate it shares with Bayonetta and Mass Effect 2. Ubisoft's Just Dance continues to exhibit a chart presence usually reserved for Nintendo-developed games and shifts down to number three. Story-driven thriller Heavy Rain continues to hold position at number four, while Wii Fit Plus and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 both climb up one position to number five and six, respectively, forcing Sonic & Sega All-Star Racing into the number seven position.

Snow is the only one surprised by the success
Snow is the only one surprised by the success

Chart-Track also reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has displaced GTA: San Andreas to take the second spot in the all-time total UK sellers chart. The UK's best-selling game of all time, Dr Kawashima's Brain Training on the Nintendo DS, continues to fend off competition from the console big hitters and still holds an unchallenged record for the amount of time spent on the chart.

Other noteworthy releases include Ben 10: Alien Force-Vilgax Attacks, which hit the charts at number 13, followed closely by THQ's' Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 - Chaos Rising at 14. Sega's two big releases for the week debuted further down the chart, with PS3-exclusive Yakuza 3 taking the number 24 spot and Sonic Classics Collection on the DS at 35.

xeridae- isn't every game in the same sense, mashing buttons over and over again? Just cuz you feel like SE somehow screwed you over with FFXIII or slapped you in the face doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way. Final Fantasy was ALWAYS about the story and combat-system gameplay, why else would you get it? SE said from the very beginning, FFXIII was gonna focus on story and gameplay, and they did. Now people are acting like they didn't know what FFXIII's style was gonna be like...lmao, haters for no reason. You also mentioned anime sterotypes....ummm ok, every FF ever made came from Japan, what were you trying to prove there again? lol, ...and uh Sazh isnt really an anime sterotype, how many 40 year old black guys with afros and dual handguns are in anime?....didn't think so ;)

I wonder if FF XIII Verses will get the same results or better since it's going to kind of tie in to some of the older storylines. Either way I'm sure I'll be worth it in the end. SquareSoft has always kept a steady pace of quality... except for like one or 2 things but yeah.

@yixingtpot It sounds like you have something stuck up there. I own an xbox and you don't see people like me bashing PS3. Both consoles are very good. I think you, like the other PS3 fanboys, are just pissed that this title is multiplatform. Not trying to be rude, but you're making yourself sound like a fool. Anyway, for everyone else. God of War will quickly take FFXIII's place. XIII is a good game, but in my opinion it just doesn't feel like a Final Fantasy to me. It seems like SE has become more focused on changing their formula than actually giving their fans what they have been asking for since FFX; a real FF.

xeridae - Isn't God of War the same thing? Mashing the same button over and over again, for 10 hours? And don't say I'm wrong, because I'm not. I'm a GOW fan, but after playing Bayonetta, even though the game as a whole was not my style, the combat is way better than GOW's. =/

why does gamespot refuse to mention Aliens vs Predator?? In febuary it topped the UK and the US charts and currently according to NPD its at no7 in the UK and yet gamespot hasnt mentioned it anywhere .Not now and not in the feb sales article. Go to the NPD website and check it out yourself. I find this very misleading gamespot :( . Or is it because SEGA denied yall an exclusive interview.

@Du_Hast_Mich I don't deny that eventually gaming will need a larger medium. Whether that is Blu-Ray, or some form of holographic disc, or even complete digital distribution, I don't know. I do feel however that Blu-Ray is not necessary for gaming THIS generation. I think Sony made sure to package a Blu-Ray drive with the PS3 not for our benefit, but to ensure that the Blu-Ray format did not suffer the same fate as the Betamax, Mini Disc and UMD. Maybe I'm a cynic but that's honestly how I see it.

@KamuiFei I expected to buy an RPG, something I thought SE was good at. Seems they aimed to change my mind and many others with this slap in the face called FFXIII. Next time I want to play a movie where, for brief periods of time, I get to move characters to the next cut scene and endure a plot with characters heavily influenced by, oh I don't know, every anime stereotype imaginable, I will definitely look to SE.

I'm not willing to buy a new system from Microsoft. I barley am scratching the surface of the 360. Too many great games I haven't beaten yet. Besides, Microsoft team says the 360 will remain on the market for 10 years. Best settle in for the long haul.

@frazzle00 People now seem to want HD everything there's no denying that. its the same way with games. and yeah i said that dvd's will still get the job done for this generation, but as time passes there will come a time when dvds are out dated, just like the cds. and since the failure of the HD-DVD it seems its just the blu ray leading the way for future HD games and movies

I'm lovin it so far, FF XIII that is. The focus is really strong on the characters, and that more than makes up for any shortcomings the game may have.

@Du_Hast_Mich What do you mean by games "becoming more High Definition"? Game resolution hasn't changed this generation. Most games tend to run at 720p or 1080p. Using DVDs for HD titles isn't an issue unless they are full of cut-scenes (like MGS4 and FFXIII). I personally don't think cut-scenes are a necessity for good gaming so I really don't think that Blu-Ray is a gaming requirement just yet. Maybe in the next generation.

God that opening scene in 1080p is breathtaking. I have both a ps3 and 360 so im not a fanboy of either one. But it is clear to see that DVD's will just not cut it for future gaming. FF13 has some of the best if not the best graphics out now and games will just keep getting bigger and better and more beautiful as time passes. As great as the 360 has been, they are going to soon have to get a new system out or change their discs if they want to keep up with the blu ray discs. Right now DVD's will still get the job done, but with gaming becoming more High Definition its only a matter of time before DVD's go out of date

To finish the game with RELATIVE ease, you need to spend 50 hours into it with at least 5 of those hours in the proper training places. [relative ease meaning that u will get 5 stars on the final boss] so yeah... i loved the game i still play with the whole extra enemies thing =P

Well between a 50% trade in bonus and my Edge card I was able to trade in FF13 today for $48 dollars at GS. I feel better now because $12 is about all FF13 and its lack of game play is worth.

lol look at all the fanboys in here boasting about the ps3 version of final fantasy. having seen all the screen shots and video comparisons of final fantasy xiii, its not much of a big difference the 360 version had a lower resolution . its evident that the 360 version was rushed but its not that big a deal it still runs on par or even better than the ps3 version, people fail to realize this, it has a more consistent frame rate. also 4.5 years was spent on the ps3 version of final fantasy compared to the 1 year spent on the 360, huh? 4.5 years on the ps3 , 1 year on the 360 and the difference is minimal. the ps3 version is more polished cause more time was spent on it, simple as that.

YIXING stop talking your crap. Sorry to tell u 360 don't break any more. Stop being a dumb fanboy and know that FF13 is at it's full potential on the ps3 and was not dumb down because a 360 version. All of the game site have already said it, the only reason that the res was lowered on the 360 version is because they wanted to fit it on 3 disks. If MS would have used a HDDVD or Bluray drive it would of looked the same. Don't be in denial the ps3 and 360 are very similar in power don't be a dumb fanboy and believe all the propaganda that is afloat about one being more powerful than the other.

Since when does Gamespot report on which system is doing better with a multi-plat? I must've of missed the stories about the 300+ multiplats that sold better on the 360, like say last week I'm sure GS posted that this same Chart-track reported Battlefield Bad Company 2's sales were 53% on the 360, 31% PS3 and 16% PC. Wait, they didn't report that? I'm surprised they didn't work in a link to their favorite story, you know the one with the Game Informer RRoD poll, lord knows it never had to be relevant for them to link it in the past.

This is how GS should of reported the FF13 sales in the UK. In its first week at retail, Final Fantasy XIII charged up the UK sales charts like a Lightning bolt, becoming the "fastest selling" game of the year -- a record set by Bad Company 2 just last week. According to Chart-Track, the console sales split for the latest edition in Square Enix's flagship series was fairly even, with a 54 to 46 percent split on PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively. Bad Company 2's sales slipped 38 percent last week, bringing EA DICE's fantastic multiplayer title (wait, there's single player, too?) down to second place. And, in third -- there it is: Just Dance. The game is unstoppable and has the stamina of a six-year-old hyped up on Pixy Stix. Like we noted last week, Just Dance just keeps going and going. We're just waiting to see when this epic sugar rush wears off. This is from joystiq.

Actually, it is a fact that Square Enix struggled working on the 360. They've faced numerous challenges and even then, on a purely technical note, the PS3 version is considered to be more "polished" than the 360 version. And I don't know what some people mean by Google being bought out by Microsoft. Microsoft has been losing talent to Google since 2005.

I'm not quite as certain as some posters are that being multiplat didn't hurt FFXIII as far as design is concerned. Like it or not, it's a fact that the 360 version is multi-disk, and it's similarly a fact that disk-swapping enforces a certain degree of linearity, though I'm sure there's a fair amount of data redundancy in FFXIII-360 to keep it to a minimum. And apparently, FFXIII is the most linear FF for some time. Coincidence? I don't think it's something that's going to be an issue all that often, but if you want to stuff your game full of 1080p FMV, the 360's DVD drive is increasingly looking like a liability. It'd be interesting to see if something like Heavy Rain would have come out differently if they had to cater for a 360 release as well. Still, for the vast majority of games the 360 is easier to develop for and boasts Live with it's advantages, so I doubt this is anything MS will be panicking about.

Sounds like someone has the case of one system owning fanboy syndrome. I got mine on PS3, but I had the option to get it on 360, because I actually own the system. I don't find pathetic excuses to rag on systems I don't own. All 3rd party games should be multiplat, and not follow the rules of broke joke fanboyism, like you and your thoughts provey. I pity wannabe gamers such as yourself Yixingpot.

basically we got a dvd XBROKE game, not a full Blu-ray FF13 like we deserve and expected. It's a great game, but dvd level due to M$ bribes. M$ bribes to have corporation delisted from Google, bribed films to stay on HD-DVD as it died, bribe anything and everything is M$ corrupt tactics. They can't win, so they cheat, steal, corrupt. If you want your moneys worth get the PS3 version, and demand FF15 be PS3 exclusive not some dumbed down M$ flub job.

The fanboys posting about how it should've stayed exclusive just don't get it..lol. When you're making games like this you do need an ample enough return to consider it a success. Exclusivity isn't such a good idea when you got another console outselling games 2:1 and sometimes 3:1. I'm happy it's multiplat. But it does make you wonder how far they could've gotten with ti being a PS3 exclusive.

@ Sins-of-Mosin couldn't agree with you more. this game is not the final fantasy i have grown up playing. change is good, but they took it too far, they took all the fun out of it. I'm going to try to finish it as fast as i can, so i can trade it for god of war 3.

the UK had a rediculous marketing blitz by MS that showcased XIII has 360 advertised, no mention of ps3 versus the US where gamers already know of multiplat and we got the ps3 and 360 message. all in all, business wise making it multi-plat was a failure and not worth whatever they were going for, ontop of that the game suffered - you could have had something on par with Uncharted 2 or GoW III in terms of complexity
