Guardians Of The Galaxy 3's James Gunn Fired By Disney After Old Tweets Surface

Guardians Vol. 3 will be directed by someone else.

The tale of the misfits that comprise the Guardians of the Galaxy will see their trilogy concluded with someone other than James Gunn in the director's chair. Gunn, who served as the writer and director for the first two Guardians movies, has been fired by Disney. The news confirmed the news in the midst of San Diego Comic-Con 2018, where Marvel was not expected to have any major news. [Update: Guardians star Dave Bautista has come out in support of Gunn, as has actress Selma Blair. Subsequently, the core Guardians cast also did so.]

This move comes after old tweets of Gunn's surfaced online. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the controversial messages--which date back almost a decade--see the director joking about topics like pedophilia and rape.

Now Playing: Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 Director James Gunn Fired - GameSpot Universe News Update

Disney issues a statement confirming that it was parting ways with Gunn. Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said, "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him."

Gunn's tweets were resurfaced online by conservative website The Daily Caller. Gunn has since published a series of tweets on his Twitter account in which he does not deny authoring the messages. Instead, he attempts to apologize and explain the messages.

"Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor. It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.

"In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies. For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn't living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it. Anyway, that's the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don't anymore. I don't blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all."

Gunn had teased that a new, non-Guardians project of his would be revealed at SDCC on Friday during the Sony Pictures panel. According to Variety, he's no longer expected to make an appearance at the panel, which is no shock--it would be a real surprise for him to show up with this news having only just broken. Whether he moves ahead with whatever that project is (possibly the horror movie we heard about previously) remains to be seen. We'll report back if Sony acknowledges the news or Gunn's project during its panel.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 had been set for release in 2020, though Gunn's removal could affect that. The events of Avengers: Infinity War stand to have a potential impact on the film, though Avengers 4--due out next year--could always make further changes. Without saying how, Gunn had previously teased that Guardians 3 would be "very different."

Aside from his contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Gunn is also known for writing and directing the movie Super.

Disney is pretty low to do this. What about all the racist cartoons with their name on it? How’s that any better? This is why having monopoly companies is bad, cause then they extend their fake family friendly garbage on everyone and everything.

I'm against people getting fired over jokes, but if you actually look at this guy's tweets, they are not jokes. He had about 20 of these pedo tweets that seemed straightforward sexual fantasies with children.

Again, if that is his thing, that is his issue, but going public how much you love fucking kids is surely going to put you in trouble and it eventually did.

Am guessing disney got tired of him and paid someone to dig dirt on him now they can fire him and get total creative control of the guardians franchise, they where pretty harmless tweets, 10 years ago people could say that and depending on the context it woulda been funny.

Watched a Terry Crews interview the other day and he recalled that when he shot Next friday and his character assaulted the pimp in the bathroom, nowadays that scene alone would have been enough for the movie go straight to video.

These are obviously such stupidly immature tweets, but they don't compare to the hateful and dangerous rhetoric that comes from the daily caller.

I've said some pretty stupid stuff as a kid, most of which I regret and I'm glad I don't have any records of those online for the whole world to see since I don't use social media anymore. I've also seen some young adults these days get ragged on for stuff they said when they were in middle and high school but this guy was a fully grown adult so he can't use that excuse. I get he was being silly and all but nowadays, you can't say anything online without someone getting offended.

@The_Bones: So Josh Hader who just a few days had tweets from when he was 17 surfaced, is being demonized for being racist, sexist, and homophobic, some of which seems like rap lyrics quotes. I really doubt it's the conservatives digging that deep into his past and ruining his life. Of course, I've seen other stuff like that, and I can tell you it's mostly not the conservatives who are upset.

Because one tweet is going to shut down the good almighty flawless and overpriced Disney F*cking World.

Disney ain’t nothing but a bunch of self righteous pussies, always have been. That’s why I grew up on Nickelodeon. It was silly but at least it was real.

People should be looking at the source of the complaints. It's the same asshole who pushed pizzagate. He literally stated that Gunn's tweets were proof he had uncovered a Hollywood pedo ring. He's just a troll, just like with the ArenaNet incident. It's pretty amazing how easily companies give in to this crap.

There seem to be two fundamental truths in life these days:

1. There's nothing republicans can't ruin.

2. There's nothing republicans can't manipulate democrats into ruining.

Social media is a cancer that carries too much sway over real life. Someone posts some click-bait story about a public figure and if enough lifeless tools get their fake outrage going the life of the person in question is essentially ruined, whether the story is true or not.

@professor_megaman: Even though I agree that social media has far outlived it’s use in the modern world, being more of a disease than a helpful tool. Both sides of American politics are the actual cancer. All it comes down to these days is b****ing at each other over limitless issues and demanding that everyone acknowledge their way as correct. Those who form their own opinions be damned. It’s a tragedy that people cant just get on with their lives and continue making bada** movies and killer video games without having to promote any agenda whatsoever.

Fuc? you Disney! More than a decade ago for past mistakes and he get's fired over it. Don't get me wrong Bad thing should have consequence but to get fired over a tweet that has nothing to do with job related and by the way it was more than a decade ago is just not right. The moral of the story here is that he's being a good person Director and how he has acted upon it after it is what matters. Heard nothing but good things and really nothing wrong about the dude since then.

I mean, every act should have a consequence. And I don't think anyone should be able to get away with their crimes and mistakes.

But it's not as simple as that. There's also a thing called justice. The punishment should be reasonable given the crime.

And how do you justify a tweet costing a person's job, not to mention that it was 10 years ago and not job related? We're acting all self-righteous now?

So he did something that does not coincide with your values? That's BS to be honest. You cannot change past mistakes, but how you act upon it in the future is what matters. And Disney, you just earned millions from him after that tweet. You don't want to associate yourselves with him, better give back all those money earned if you are indeed the clean institution that you so imply.

@somebodyweird: Saying dumb stuff on Twitter a D E C A D E ago, is neither a crime befitting any sort of punishment, nor a valid reason to be fired. This is A M E R I C A. Being criminally punished for saying something you disagree with is only acceptable if your country starts with the Letter N, and ends in Korea.. Now, whether he should be fired as director? That's more of a blurry line, but again, this was a FREAKING DECADE AGO. The very idea that saying something a decade should have any kind of repercussions at this juncture is so farcical it's almost at a point where you're at a loss for words. I only semi-liked GotG, and hated the shit out of GoTG 2, but this is....I am still siding with Gunn here.

@defiler: I’d also like to add that society as a whole was completely different a decade ago. Regarding the acceptable social norms. It’s no excuse for his comments, but I find it hardly display’s his present character. But, they were made in jest, and there are plenty of comedians who had far more risqué material during that time and continue to do so today. A shame that they caved so easily instead of seeing the value that he has brought them in his present ability.

There's going to be a precedent set, sooner or later, when someone SUES the living $hit out of a company for firing them based on comments made 10 years ago and on THEIR social media sites and WINS. Especially when what they wrote was 10 YEARS AGO. Still, it pays to remember that there is ALWAYS someone keeping tabs on your bs social media sites. ALWAYS.

People still don't learn that you have private social medias when in the face of the public and "professional" ones for career stuff? You'd think people apart of Hollywood of all places, especially during the current era would be aware of this. Most should just delete their social medias while they're ahead and start over.

Normally I would be against someone getting fired for telling jokes, but James Gunn didn't just tell off-color jokes. Apparently, he embedded a suspicious link on his website (his website that he very quickly deleted after the dark jokes from his twitter were being shared), originally by someone who was later arrested for having underage pornography. Apparently, the link was titled "100 Pubescent Girls Touch Themselves".

Exec B: "What? Why'd you do that?"

Exec A: "We didn't think the movies would be THAT successful. Some funny little space romp, sure, but not this huge thing."

Exec B: "Okay, we can fix this...let's look into our 'Dirt on Employees file for when Needed' because, you know, due diligence is a mandatory part of all hiring practices, especially on leadership figures like directors, in this day and age...hey! Look! He once made some mean tweets that we TOTALLY knew about but didn't really care about back then because he was SO cheap to hire. BUSTED!!"

So if you ever had a goal of growing up, maturing, just changing your nature... give up that dream right now. Because if you left any evidence that you were inappropriate at any time, it will be used to judge you for all eternity.

Insane. :-(
