Half-Life 2: Episode Two Q&A - Story, Setting, and Technology

Valve's Erik Johnson fills us in on the highly awaited next installment in the Half-Life 2 saga.

Almost a full year has passed since Valve released Half-Life 2: Episode One, the first of three promised episodes that will continue the saga of the blockbuster first-person shooter franchise. Episode Two was originally scheduled for release late last year, but Valve pushed the release date back to later this year. When it does arrive, it will feature not only the continuing story of series protagonist Gordon Freeman and partner Alyx Vance battling the alien Combine, but also the multiplayer action game Team Fortress 2 and a 3D puzzle game called Portal. To learn more about what's going on in Episode Two, we caught up with Valve project manager Erik Johnson. A warning to those who haven't played Episode One yet, as this preview contains spoilers to major events.

Alyx Vance is in Half-Life 2: Episode Two. And so is a hot rod.
Alyx Vance is in Half-Life 2: Episode Two. And so is a hot rod.

GameSpot: Obviously, we're not looking for spoilers, but what can you tell us about Episode Two's story? At the end of Episode One, it seemed that a major chapter had come to a close with the escape from City 17. What's next to come?

Erik Johnson: The Citadel's destruction triggers formation of a massive superportal. To close the portal and prevent the Combine from sending reinforcements, Gordon and Alyx must make sure the data packet they seized in Episode One gets to White Forest, a former missile base where their scientist friends and family have made their stand. It's a breakneck run through an alien-infested wilderness patrolled by Combine troops, marked by encounters with mysterious entities. If they make it on time, they stand a good chance of shutting down the portal. If they fail, then, in the words of Eli Vance, "It'll be the Seven Hour War all over again. But we won't last seven minutes this time."

GS: It's been reported that Episode Two will be longer than Episode One. Could you elaborate on that? Will it be approximately as long as Half-Life 2? Slightly shorter?

EJ: Our play tests of Episode Two are running closer to eight hours, where Episode One was taking around six. If you take a look at the statistics we compiled from people who actually played through Episode One, it looks like the average completion time ran around five hours, 41 minutes.

GS: Will vehicles return in this episode? Half-Life 2 featured the dune buggy and the air boat, but Episode One took place entirely on foot. Will either of those vehicles return, or is there something new to look forward to?

EJ: There will be a new vehicle in Episode Two. The buggy from Half-Life 2 was built by a group of rebels that was clearly skilled at welding together a tube frame but was a bit lacking in the horsepower department. In this episode you'll be driving a car built by someone with a lot of knowledge of older American hot rods.

GS: What can you tell us of the major characters, such as Alyx, Dog, and the G-Man? What are they up to? And will we meet any major new characters in Episode Two?

EJ: Most of the characters will be back in Episode Two, including the G-Man. Since the Vortigaunts stepped in at the start of Episode One and pulled you out of the G-Man's control, he'll be coming back to enlighten Gordon on a number of events and give you some insight into his line of thinking. There will be some new additions to the cast in Episode Two, as well.

GS: Will Episode Two introduce any major technological improvements to the Source Engine? For example, Episode One introduced high dynamic range lighting. Will Valve use Episode 2 to introduce DirectX 10 support in the PC version?

EJ: We've been building more technology into Source alongside the development of Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. Episode Two specifically will be taking advantage of cinematic physics, which gives us the ability to create large-scale destruction events that are physically simulated. You'll see that feature in action right at the beginning of the episode.

Meanwhile, the visual budget for Episode Two is higher than Half-Life 2 and Episode One, so we essentially have a higher "high end" on the graphics side. We made this decision as a result of tracking the rapid GPU adoption rate of gamers on Steam via our hardware surveys. Having moved to episodic development, we are able to more accurately target these early adopters and provide an experience that does a better job of scaling to the power of their systems. And we've built a new particle system into Source. This has put more of the control of our visual effects directly into the hands of the artists, resulting in the most graphically sophisticated game we've ever made.

The White Forest is full of Combine forces, including those dreaded striders.
The White Forest is full of Combine forces, including those dreaded striders.

GS: Computing power has increased substantially since Half-Life 2. PCs now have dual-core CPUs, and the Xbox 360 and PS3 are powerful multicore systems. Will Episode Two support multicore CPUs for better physics or AI?

EJ: We've built a system for dealing with multiple cores and threading called hybrid threading. As opposed to using coarse- or fine-grained threading, we take the approach of building a system into the engine that makes the right decisions about how to deal with multiple cores on the CPU.

In Episode Two this will translate in a number of ways, benefiting not only systems that were traditionally CPU based, such as artificial intelligence and physics, but also systems that are on the graphics side. We went with this approach because it scales well over time. Desktop processors are going to have more cores over time for us to take advantage of, so we took the route that requires more work up-front so we can keep pace with our customers' hardware as we move from dual core to quad core and beyond.

GS: Finally, when can we expect Episode Two to ship, and will it ship on all three platforms simultaneously?

EJ: We're looking to ship in the fall of this year, on the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 simultaneously.

GS: Thank you.

Steam rocks! I wish all game makers would go to this distribution and sales model. I never ever have to worry about media, and can download and install my games on any computer I may be working on. I've had my Steam account for many years, and absolutly no trouble at all (I guess I'm good and remembering my passwords). HL2:EP1 was awesome. Especially at the lower price they asked, which is nice. I'd like to see a lot more games done that way. Games are just too expensive these days. And, I don't have the time to play 50 hours on a game. 10 hours is plenty.

The game industry is digging their own grave. How is it possible to delay something that can hardly be called a game that much? A game entusiast would make an episode twice as good in half the time.

I'm not looking forward to it,I can't play the games I've already bought from Steam.Always had sign in problems.now I can't sign in at all,no tech support, since iI paid for my game over Steam I'd be able to contact billing and have the purchases removed, they were supposed to contact me with in 48hrs it has now been over 19 days.I for 1 want to play a game when I want to play it.I don't want a hassle, It should actually be easy for Valve to assist me since I paid with a credit card, you just can't get them to respond to mothing.Follow the steps they give on thier website and wait days ,weeks it hasn't been a month yet but give another 9 days and it will.If you buy a Valve game and think your going to always be able to play it you are doing so at great risk.I got to play Counter Strike about 2 weeks before it started saying no such account invalid password I tried their Pass word restore,I got an email with a code but it keeps saying the pw is alkready in use.I hope more people that has had problems with Steam will start posting them on the game sites maybe than Valve will start doing more to assist there customers. This is a very common problem.Do a search and you guys will see that for yourself.

OMG!!!! the people who wrote comments on page 1 and so on.. who think there will be a hl3 are IDIOTS! the episodes of half life 2 is hl3 but valve decided instead off making people wait for a few years for hl3 to come out, they made them in episodes so it wont take so long for hl fans.

Quit pushing HL3. Let them take their time with the addon packs so once they blow us away with story line and graphics with those, then we can creep up on them and bombard them with "Where is HL3?" questions. j/k When it's done.....it's done. No more and no less. I want a amazing gaming experience similar to the way HL and HL2 have given me and I don't want Valve to rush anything, especially anything to do with their upper management dates. Let the guys do what they do best and take all of the time that they need. I guarantee that these game will STILL come out before DukeNukem.

SPECULATIVE:.....The whole point in the episode gaming was that most people do not finish full games anymore therefore they want to ensure everyone who buys it will play it through and also its been long enough for a 6-8 hour episode so im sure if they made a full game ud be complainin about the 4-5 years it would take.

Stop making episodes and start making real games again. Doubt I'll mess with this for $20 for only 8 hours of gameplay... If HL3 had been in the works instead of these "episodes" we'd have a dx10 HL3 this fall!

I honestly could care less at this point. They have put it off far too long for me to have kept interest. Pretty sure those consoles caused the delay and since they have delayed so long that is less money they will now get as I am not getting it

Two things: First we forget that the media and us gamers alike swallowed the 5-6 hour gameplay of Ep1 partly because Ep2 was only going to be a couple months or so away. Remember? If we had known Ep2 was going to be more than a year away, would we all have been so kind to Valve? Now we have something I was worried about with episodic gaming in general - what if the technology changes mid episodes and you are left with a PC that cannot continue with the series unless they upgrade? Despite thinking like most that Half Life 2 was brilliant, I never got caught up in 'the king has no clothes' scenario that was Ep1, with some people coming up with any excuse to say that 5 hours of gaming was a good thing - a good trend.... So I say to Valve and anyone else thinking 'episodic gaming' - please don't! Merge Ep2 and 3 and call it 'part two', then move on. Yes, you can make more money from episodic gaming, but with the experience of Ep2, surely you now realise it's not as much as you thought Valve?

Err from that article is sounds like my computer is going to struggle even more to play the same graphics as Episode One that were oh-so-marginally better than the original HL2... I hate this episodic cr*p, just go away into your little den, stop bleeding me for $35 for 6 hours of gameplay, no technological advances, no new weapons, ONE new enemy... and make me half-life 3. Patience with the half-life series: at an all time low but *sigh* I know I'm going to buy it anyway cos I want to know what happens and episode 3 as well. Episode 2 is the worst reason to upgrade ever... Crysis on the other hand... there's an example of where they should have been aiming after HL2, not "Wow, HDR, I bet everyone is going to be super impressed". Edit: And DON'T get me started on making PC users wait for the console versions to be ready...

Whats that ya say? Selling out to console ya say? Forgeting the PC people, ya say? Do you need a reminder of HL-decay? I understand that you are working of several projects, but releasing them all at once seems silly, and making PC people wait on console is just wrong...

game simply looks to good, i love the half life games, episode one featured greatly improved paceing over the previous game. episodic content does do away with the filler in games so even if valve fails to recognize the idea of releasing in under a year they do give us a more refined experience for less money.

Looking good with the multicore scaling VAVLVe! I hope it really does give us the performance increase that we're looking for :). On another note, what to get this for? PC which i have all the previous installments for, but is a bit technologically challenged at this point, but has a mouse and keyboard, or Xbox 360 which i can run at 1920X1080 with little lagg and hiccups, but wont feels the same without my mouse/keyboard and because it's on a TV?

Bubble2 "I dislike waiting to fall, just to play 8 hours of episode2 " ====================================================== Dude I don't if u got the memo or not, but HL2:ep 2 will have two additional games with it when it releases...TF2 and Portal. So there not just preparing for just one game, but three games has to be tested. Hell didn't they just started working on these games just a little over a year ago. Give it some time. U and everyone else just calm down.

Im excited for this, but not as much as Halo 3. I just wish I knew if this was going to run at highest on my core 2 duo and nVidia 7950GT card, like Hl2 and episode 1 did. Ive always thought HL2 gameplay was boring and repetitive, always forward shooting and never getting surrounded, the combine just standing there shooting at your not moving. Seems though that this one is gonna fix that. Also, Portal and TF2 look awesome. and I cant wait to find out more about teh Gman, plz dont finish the saga without explaining the gman
