Halo: Reach to push September sales up 2.4% - Analyst

Wedbush's Michael Pachter projects $665 million in sales, boost from Bungie shooter tempered by $100 million slide in rhythm genre.

After three straight months of declining game software sales, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter believes Bungie's Halo: Reach finally pushed the industry into positive territory for September. The prediction was included in a note Pachter sent to investors today detailing his expectations for the NPD Group's September sales figures (set to be released Thursday).

Pachter predicts Halo: Reach will salvage software sales growth.
Pachter predicts Halo: Reach will salvage software sales growth.

Based on the strength of Halo: Reach, Pachter projected US retail software sales for September to hit $665 million, a 2.4 percent increase over September 2009's total. That increase would be larger were it not for expected declines in the music genre. While top 10 sales performances by Guitar Hero 5 and Rock Band: The Beatles last year helped bolster the flagging genre, Pachter believes Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock managed to sell only 100,000 units for the month. Overall, Pachter expected rhythm genre sales to be down more than $100 million for the month, from $116 million to just $15 million.

Beyond Halo: Reach, Pachter expects the month's best-selling new releases to include Dead Rising 2 and FIFA Soccer 11. As for Sony's PlayStation Move, he predicted "modest" launch sales for the PS3's motion-sensing controller.

Pachter also believes Sid Meier's Civilization V on the PC sold through 350,000 copies, although those numbers won't be included in the console- and handheld-only NPD gaming charts. September numbers will also benefit from continued strong sales of Madden NFL 11 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Pachter believes, with the analyst expecting EA's pigskin sim to have moved 725,000 copies during the month.

While Pachter didn't put a dollar amount on hardware sales, he did project the number of consoles and handhelds sold to be down 18 percent. He was particularly pessimistic on console sales for the near future, as August and September of 2009 saw price cuts for all major systems, driving late 2009's hardware sales up significantly. Sales of Sony's Move and Microsoft's Kinect Xbox 360 camera may compensate somewhat, but Pachter noted that only the hardware bundles will count toward the NPD Group's hardware sales total. The industry-tracking group will count Microsoft's $150 Kinect camera and Sony's $100 Move controller starter kit as accessory sales rather than hardware.

September may be as good as the industry gets for the rest of the year. Pachter said he expects October sales to be up "only slightly," with November and December sales both sliding year-over-year. For the full year, he predicts console and handheld sales to end up down, with those losses offset by growth in the PC gaming market thanks to Blizzard Entertainment's Starcraft II and World of Warcraft: Cataclysm.

This guy is right 20% of the time yet is still seen as a top analyst. There are plenty of gamers and real analysts more accurate than him, maybe they should be given a voice too.

@metalkid9 I went to walmart the other day and the PS3 Moves were just sitting on the shelves lol ********************************************************** That's what happens when you only have 200K pre-orders at launch and only 2 games worth owning. Sales are going to be slow until the end of November or until better games come out.

@monson21502 I lol'd, are you implying that the 3ds , psp and such are closely related to xbox, ps3 and pc (in other word one is portable, have a little screen and sh*tty game while the other is stationary, have a big screen and good game).

@ Anubistraveler Not interested in a game that is basically the same game as the others in the series on a system that I would only own if I actually like this game. I will play my PS3 and enjoy free online gaming that does not show me ads while I play.. hate away Xbox fanboys. The 360 is showing its age this year and it will be the year that Sony takes the market from them. ******************************************************** Are you talking about GT5, because that game has been the same for the past 4 sequels. Sorry to say, but PS3 games has ads in them as well. Cows have been saying the PS3 will take pass the XBox 360 ever since it launched. Four years later and it still hasn't happened. Even if it did, the PS3 would still be 2nd and would still lose this generation. 1st is the only position that really matters when all is said and done.

I read this cause I thought there were actually hard numbers here. Nope, just Pachter again. I don't really care for the guy but you have to give the guy credit for making money doing and delivering nothing. He's certainly got Gamespot fooled.

Anubistraveler The fact that you made that comment replying to no one showed how butt hurt Reach makes you feel. Also ignorance is a good word to describe you and the ps3 community.

Why is a prediction by some guy who predicts things horribly in the GameSpot news? C'mon, put up a review for Medal of Honor or something.

Don't believe a word this dude says. Seriously, I have made way better predictions than this guy. Way better. And I don't even get paid. GameSpot, you hearing this? I'm willing to offer about, eh something modest, like $500 a prediction. Then if it's wrong I pay you guys $500. Deal? (And I've gotten 3/3 of ma last predictions right, and Pachter got 'em all wrong. 3DS pricing, New consoles coming out 2011, and some other third thing. Something about Kinect/Move....) ;D

@metalkid9 Yup... That's what products do, they go to stores, and then they go to the consumers. I'm glad you've grasped such a difficult concept.

Halo Reach may SOUND like it has had impressive sales, but when you consider that, at best, it's numbers are in the same ballpark as Halo 3, despite Microsoft's assertion that "Xbox 360's install base is triple what it was at Halo 3's launch" then questions have to be asked about why the Halo series has not only seen zero growth in the past three years when it saw nothing but during it's first three installments, but it may actually be seeing declining sales since the last game. And no, the "it's only a spin off" excuse holds no water when everyone everywhere has been asserting it is far more than that and is very much a proper sequel in all but number. Can't help but wonder what Halo will sell like now Bungie have abandoned it. Either way, glad to see it, it's a deeply archaic series in terms of design traits(Bullet sponge enemies, no precision aim, no default sprint... these are things that went out with the last decade of FPS gaming), and needs a revamp immediately.

I was bringing in my groceries yesterday and some kids were playing nearby. "Shotgun! chk-chk, BOOM HEADSHOT!!" "No you didn't kill me, you only took out my shields. Regenerating in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0!" Things sure are different these days.

Tired of Reach. Haven't played it for some time now. Didn't think I would say that seeing as though its been out less than a month. Medal of Honor seems like a good game to stay at though.

im bored sickless of Reach now, 1st play run finished it on legendary and online there is nothing to do other than Rank, nothing to really unlock. the armor add-ons should of been an unlockable feature as you rank up, make it worth while, i hate to say it but Black ops looks like there will be LOADS to do and unlock online, a shame that Reach has more or less nothing.

Come on Bobby you killed off the rhythm genre...let's see how fast you can destroy the CoD franchise! But at least you signed up Bungie to distract people from your IP destroying ways.
