How Sony Won Call of Duty DLC Exclusivity Away From Microsoft

Sony's existing partnership with Activision for Destiny helped.

For years now, all Call of Duty DLC has launched first on Xbox platforms. But that's changing this fall with Call of Duty: Black Ops III thanks to Activision electing to partner with Sony instead of Microsoft.

It's a big change for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. To dive deeper into the subject, we spoke with Adam Boyes, the PlayStation VP of Publisher & Developer Relations.

As you might expect, Boyes shied away from discussions specifics about the business terms of the deal, but he did offer some general insight into how the partnership came to be and what it means.

"Well, I think the first thing was we've had a great relationship with Activision around Destiny," Boyes said. "And I'm a huge fan of that."

Sony's partnership with Activision for Destiny has been a deep one, with PlayStation fans getting all manner of Destiny content before Xbox players. Sony has even said that it is treating Destiny like a first-party game in some ways.

Boyes went on to say that Activision invited Boyes and his team on a trip to see Black Ops III in person. It didn't take long for Sony to be convinced that this was a game worth getting involved with.

"We fell in love instantly," Boyes said about Black Ops III, going on to describe the game as "transformative" for its various new features.

"As soon as I started playing it, I said, 'This feels incredible! You can wallride!' It's just so smooth; it's almost like poetic. And so obviously, we just continued talking with our partners at Activision and worked something out. And now we've got I think a great benefit to all the gamers."

Not only will all Black Ops III DLC launch first on PlayStation platforms, but the game's multiplayer beta will also premiere on PlayStation before coming to Xbox and PC.

Sony's exclusivity deals with Destiny and now Call of Duty may not be the last. Earlier this year, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said these kinds of third-party exclusivity arrangements are central to Sony's business strategy going forward.

@weapon_x57: Or maybe people have more important priorities to spend their console budget on, like bills, family, food, etc.

There, you're welcome. ;)

@jerjef: Xbox fanboy detected.....If you were reading the article carefully you would figure out by now that he i not trying to say that sony won over microsoft rather than ignite a console war on the comments section once again..I dont know why gamespot especially does that so often nowdays but who cares...don't help them succeed..i mean just look at how easy you make it for them you comment some bad stuff about him and sony then someone replies the same way and here we go again

@platonmichail: Platon. Plankton. Squidworth. Octopuss. Takoyaki. Hot balls. It took a 5 word tangent to turn your beautiful Greek name into something sexually ambiguous but equally beautiful.

@platonmichail: Gamespot garnered a lot of traffic during the peak of the console wars. Eddie was especially good at stirring the pot.

In a desperate bid to be relevant, they continue to poke at the coals. I hope eddie's job doesnt rely on keeping his hits up

@platonmichail: It's more a commentary on his impressive click-baiting abilities by titling another article as either pro-sony or anti-MS. The content is often irrelevant because his point is to get people to his article for ad space, which he does in spades. I just like to give him a hard time. He wants to draw people to this site with BS, then BS he will get.

DLC exclusivity is one thing, but the sad part is more often than not the one with the deals gets more effort put into it's version over the competitor. Ie. Arkham Knight.

This is basically AW with a new look and feel along with new features. I don't know that going back to WWII or what have you would solve the problem either, as I think people will get very bored of that quickly unless they do something drastic, like making maps bigger, adding in vehicles, and making the environment destructible. Problem is, it would feel too much like Battlefield. The only real thing separating Black Ops from the other Call of Dutys is the Zombies Mode, which is getting so big and popular now I suspect it will spawn it's own game series before too long. They're in a tough spot critically, but surprisingly their sales are still up even after all the negative things I've heard said about COD. They're sticking to what they know, and it's working for them monetarily - and it has been for a long time.

Sony is selling more consoles hence why we are seeing a new home for COD. No surprise here. Microsoft really messed up with Xbox One. Looks like eventually get another console it would be PS4.

The destiny deal with sony has been the shadiest shit ive seen in my life of gaming. Exclusive content held over a year puts it outside a games relevant life cycle. If this is a similar deal I want nothing to do with CoD or activision anymore. Trust me, this is a horrible business practice and will eventually affect everyone if left unchecked.

@alexanian: When MS had these deals the Sony fans hated it and tore both MS and Activision a new one for it. Now the shoe's on the other foot and they're loving it. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. They're still crying over the Tomb Raider deal. Sigh.

Now I have to wonder are these dlc exclusively deals at least in reference to COD on a game by game basis are there multiyear deals set in place on these things? If it's a game by game year by year basis then that means Microsoft was paying out the wazoo for COD exclusively every year well that's if they have to pay for it or do Activision just decide who the want to GIVE exclusively to?

The first COD I wont buy.
Im so tired of this future stuff.
Why must they make several similar games in a row?! Do they think we want that?
The community is screaming after a WW2 game and MW 1-3 re-mastered MP maps with an MW4.
And instead they are doing a game with future BS and the only thing that sells it is a mediocre "zombies" mode...

Its going to be another game with fast movement, vertical gameplay which needs BIGGER MP maps.
Yet they fail to see that.

@triton1977: Going back to WW2 won't get CoD out of it's stale rut. The reason why it went to the future was because WW2 got old. Because they won't be able to implement power or new/interesting weapons in WW2, it will be DOA, and people will get bored of it right away.

I like the future stuff. I'd rather the faster vertical gameplay vs the slow stagnant gameplay of COD of old.

do you know someat these threads that praise someat over someat else are so stupid.. it doesnt matter about abit of dlc being won i certainly do not care for it or the game, its hardly a war won is it between the two franchises. Its not gunna put a dent in ms pocket or gain sony tons of extra revenue, fans arnt going to flock from one console to the next because of a dlc exclusivity selling there xbox or ps4 which ever way round it happens..

@skiggy34: Nah, Sony is doing everything MS did last gen. It's amazing how quickly people forget. Lets see:

-Cheaper console (Well at launch anyway)
-Pay for online play
-COD Deal
-Bungie deal
-Less focus on first party
-Price gouging customers for things competitor is offering for free. (PSNow vs. BC)

It's kind of ironic that hardcore Sony fans have essentially bought an Xbox.

It's too bad this series isn't as good as it once was. I haven't purchased one since black ops 2. This one has me interested, but since I've moved away from console gaming (for now), I don't see myself snagging it any time soon. I'm not seeing Microsoft needing this for this year though. They still have the best exclusives launching this year; Halo is all they really need.

@McGregor:

I'm relatively new to COD last years was my first. I really like the futuristic stuff it's fun and I straight own at the multiplayer it actually feels kinda easy with how quick you die in this game. I'm more used to Halo where your armor takes all your shots and it takes a whole mag to kill one guy. This one looks interesting to me but I really couldn't care less about the dlc.
