How Sony Won Call of Duty DLC Exclusivity Away From Microsoft

Sony's existing partnership with Activision for Destiny helped.

For years now, all Call of Duty DLC has launched first on Xbox platforms. But that's changing this fall with Call of Duty: Black Ops III thanks to Activision electing to partner with Sony instead of Microsoft.

It's a big change for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. To dive deeper into the subject, we spoke with Adam Boyes, the PlayStation VP of Publisher & Developer Relations.

As you might expect, Boyes shied away from discussions specifics about the business terms of the deal, but he did offer some general insight into how the partnership came to be and what it means.

"Well, I think the first thing was we've had a great relationship with Activision around Destiny," Boyes said. "And I'm a huge fan of that."

Sony's partnership with Activision for Destiny has been a deep one, with PlayStation fans getting all manner of Destiny content before Xbox players. Sony has even said that it is treating Destiny like a first-party game in some ways.

Boyes went on to say that Activision invited Boyes and his team on a trip to see Black Ops III in person. It didn't take long for Sony to be convinced that this was a game worth getting involved with.

"We fell in love instantly," Boyes said about Black Ops III, going on to describe the game as "transformative" for its various new features.

"As soon as I started playing it, I said, 'This feels incredible! You can wallride!' It's just so smooth; it's almost like poetic. And so obviously, we just continued talking with our partners at Activision and worked something out. And now we've got I think a great benefit to all the gamers."

Not only will all Black Ops III DLC launch first on PlayStation platforms, but the game's multiplayer beta will also premiere on PlayStation before coming to Xbox and PC.

Sony's exclusivity deals with Destiny and now Call of Duty may not be the last. Earlier this year, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said these kinds of third-party exclusivity arrangements are central to Sony's business strategy going forward.

I'm pretty sure it was a highly technical process of sitting in a conference room, and writing a big fat check with one whole number followed by many, many zeros.

Rumours abound that Microsoft is unhappy about COD:Ghosts being initially showcased with 720p gameplay which tarnished Xbox 1 technical capabilities. Hence, Microsoft don't want to promote anything (or don't want to spend money on buying early DLC accecss...etc) to do with COD. For Activision, it is a good deal to move to Sony as the player base is strong on PS4 at the moment.

Activision invited Sony to see Blop3. Means they know the PS4 has all the momentum in the console space. Meanwhile you see Xbone pulling out gimmick after gimmick to try and get back in the race.

I feel practices such as this are just detrimental to gaming in general, especially if you consider this in the long run.

This is the Gamespot headline story in the news section? Timed exclusive DLC on a game? How about we question why Sony hasn't been investing this money in first party exclusive titles instead, Gamespot?

Ever consider that Sony got it because Microsoft didn't this time around? Because they have actual first party games coming out?

@TheGreatOne023: But Sony is investing in first party exclusives. Its just not necessary to them to reveal every one that is in development as they have a comfortable lead. Also as you may not know 3rd party AAA always sell the most over first party AAA and its wise of Sony to invest there as well. Not to mention publishers and developers see the PS4 as the front runner so its a win win for all parties involved. You realize that first party AAA aren't the beginning and end all in terms of getting ahead in the race right? Microsoft just chose to show all their cards at once but Sony isn't bluffing.

@hard_serpent: Must be nice to live in your own little world where you base everything off of assumptions and making excuses for multi billion dollar companies. Sony is the KING of early game reveals...i.e. show you something today (usually CGI or recorded) that you won't play until 2+ years later. Safer to assume they were holding back and just hope for a brighter future, right? Especially when there is no choice in the matter.

MS didn't show all their cards...they are playing with a full deck while Sony clearly is not.

Greatness awaits...still.

@TheGreatOne023: You don't use the word awaits correctly. You think it means to wait when awaits means for example greatness is waiting for you. And way to ignore the fact AAA 3rd party sell more than AAA 1st party and instead say im assuming that which in fact it is true. All I hear from you Xboners is AAA exclusive this and exclusive that like everyone who buys a PS4 or Xbone does so with exclusives as their primary reason and that Halo 5 and pseudo BC feature will close the 2 to 1 sales gap PS4 has. Have you ver considered the possibility the some gamers just don't care about exclusives as much as you all think ? Or that some just buy their console of choice just based off brand recognition or preference ?

@hard_serpent: So you're saying gamers don't buy consoles for the games? Is that what you're saying? Or is this another excuse you're making for Sony? Or trying to justify a bad purchase?

Any gamer that doesn't buy a system for the broadest option of games...isn't a real gamer.

Content sells consoles. Exclusive content. "System sellers" as they have been referred to as for decades.

And I know exactly what 'awaits' means, Good lord...

@TheGreatOne023: Then use the word correctly. And no im saying that AAA exclusives aren't the only reason people buy a console. In fact thats what I said clearly twice now. If you would cool down a bit and take the time to read and comprehend things you read you wouldn't sound so uneducated.

Why make a full article out of what can easily be summed up in a word or sentence

Money.

Activision saw a larger market and also got money from Sony for exclusivity so they get more money partnering with Sony.

Do you see the common word here, money

Activision is loyal to one thing and one thing only and that's profit. I know thats every corporation, but Activision doesn't care whom or what it destroys in it's path. EA & Activision, two peas in a pod.

@bob15x: Sony and Microsoft have both been buying DLC exclusivity for certain games for years. It's not a new practice. And all COD games have released and sold well on PlayStation platforms in the past. You really shouldn't judge sales or an industry based off what you read in the comments.

I honestly wish timed exclusivity would go away. It is the most annoying thing ever devised. I play games for the story involved and enjoy uncovering the story on my own. If I happen to come across spoilers because another console had the game 6 months ago and it is common knowledge on the other console the Darth Vader is Luke's father for instance it is highly likely that game is on the "Meh, no need to play that now." list. Also these year to year contracts on games like COD make them basically moot. If I bought an XBox One because they are the home of COD well I just got screwed just like all the Sony fans that felt Sony was home to Tomb Raider. It is all quite stupid. Can you hear me up there at Microsoft, Sony, Activision....STUPID!

Because they paid for "first on" rights, Activision doesn't side with winning or losing consoles, they side with those who pay, nothing more nothing less.

"We fell in love instantly," Boyes said. Well of course! Call of Duty brings in $$$$$! As well as users flocking to consoles that get things first. This is what the PS4 needs to become the better console.

Whether it will affect the COD scene on the Xbox though is to be scene. Especially when there are TONS of great games coming out around the same time.

@CallMeDuraSouka: For one, CoD is a non exclusive. It has played by many across all platforms. Halo is anything but dudebro - I don't see how a sci fi setting, with a heavy focus on story and lore (for a shooter) defines dudebro. Just because Gears features muscled up dudes and is a shooter, doesn't mean it's automatically dudebro. It's just a cool game with character

Xbox has released the best console shooters, which Sony have failed to emulate (Killzone and The Order). Just because the shooters on Xbox are actually...you know, GOOD, and just because people play them, doesn't automatically give it the stupid tag. Honestly, the biggest dudebro shooter is Unreal Tournament. Oh, and please tell me which games are played by sophisticated adults above the age of 25 on the PlayStation?

@7tizz: No way MS passed on a game that still sells tens of millions of copies, I'm sorry but the obvious answer is Activision sees a bigger market in the PS4 and wants as much money as it can possibly get, the people at Activision know with that extra mony Sony payed for timed exclusivity on DLC, plus the extra sales of a platform with more users equals more money, Activision probably approached Sony like "hey you guys want DLC first for only X million dollars, Sony is the new home of COD" than I'm sure a bunch of corporate buzzwords like "datafication" and "dynamism" and they are in, Sony thought of it as a win as they take the "home of COD" crown from MS, Activision sees a win because... well let's face it, MONEY!

@7tizz: No corporate entity willingly passes on a 25 million+ units franchise if it has a chance to sell more consoles. MS made no such move. Sony is just way better at securing marketing rights.

@mkeezay22: activision will make that money regardless the game isnt exclusive and it dosent matter if they partner with sony or MS they will make a ton of money all the platforms combined really all thats at stake for them how much money they can bilk from either Sony or MS and MS had enough there's no way sony outbid them for that deal and Activison would have took a deal with MS if they had offered more money plain and simple. I mean you have to understand the game is coming to both of the systems anyway so it really dosen't matter which one is selling better.

I can answer this without reading the article. MS sees the franchise fading away and running out of juice and they also know that better FPS games are making way this gen so throwing money at Activision just doesnt make sense anymore. So they just let Sony have the leftovers of what COD has to offer because its getting lame especially after ghost and AVW was hardly a comeback.
