How Sony Won Call of Duty DLC Exclusivity Away From Microsoft

Sony's existing partnership with Activision for Destiny helped.

For years now, all Call of Duty DLC has launched first on Xbox platforms. But that's changing this fall with Call of Duty: Black Ops III thanks to Activision electing to partner with Sony instead of Microsoft.

It's a big change for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. To dive deeper into the subject, we spoke with Adam Boyes, the PlayStation VP of Publisher & Developer Relations.

As you might expect, Boyes shied away from discussions specifics about the business terms of the deal, but he did offer some general insight into how the partnership came to be and what it means.

"Well, I think the first thing was we've had a great relationship with Activision around Destiny," Boyes said. "And I'm a huge fan of that."

Sony's partnership with Activision for Destiny has been a deep one, with PlayStation fans getting all manner of Destiny content before Xbox players. Sony has even said that it is treating Destiny like a first-party game in some ways.

Boyes went on to say that Activision invited Boyes and his team on a trip to see Black Ops III in person. It didn't take long for Sony to be convinced that this was a game worth getting involved with.

"We fell in love instantly," Boyes said about Black Ops III, going on to describe the game as "transformative" for its various new features.

"As soon as I started playing it, I said, 'This feels incredible! You can wallride!' It's just so smooth; it's almost like poetic. And so obviously, we just continued talking with our partners at Activision and worked something out. And now we've got I think a great benefit to all the gamers."

Not only will all Black Ops III DLC launch first on PlayStation platforms, but the game's multiplayer beta will also premiere on PlayStation before coming to Xbox and PC.

Sony's exclusivity deals with Destiny and now Call of Duty may not be the last. Earlier this year, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said these kinds of third-party exclusivity arrangements are central to Sony's business strategy going forward.

with all the open world gaming right now....Cod's not going to be viable much longer unless they adapt....Fallout 4 mad max metal gear ghost recon all open world that contains hundreds of hours of game play...am done paying for a CoD game that has 6hours of game play....CoD either needs open world or just build online maps...wasting money building a story no one cares about and is ridiculously short is going to dome this franchise

Now what will happen this coming year... Did you PS4 fanboys forget that xb1 is coming out with backwards compatibility really soon? With 100 of the best titles for the system... Adding more ever month? Activision only gave the deal to Sony because Halo 5 is coming out! It's a huge deal for Microsoft meaning less advertising for Bo3. And sure PS4 has more titles but a lot (not all) but a lot of games they come out quite frankly suck.... I would rather spend my money on xb1 4 games that they put a bunch into then shitty Ps4 games that they pull out of their ass. It's obvious that Microsoft will crush Ps4 in the coming year.... You just wait. It really is a superior console... Oh and before I sign of I figured I should mention... XB1 customer support crushes Sony. Every time I call Xbox support it is a well spoken AMERICAN in AMERICA that isn't losing a job due to cheaper outsourcing! Also the Twitter team is really helpful... You can argue kick and scream all you want but you will see what I am taking about in the coming months. And then Activision will side again with the superior console (or the winner) if you wanna look at it that way. Activision will do what makes the most money... They always have. And destiny really sucked unless you buy all the dlc (p.s money waster). If you look at Xbox exclusives they are of higher quality. Remember it's not about quantity it's all about quality.

Sony "won" exclusivity because the PS4 is trouncing the Xbone world wide. Just like how Activision sided with the 360 because it was beating the PS3 up until the last few years.

Activision is just siding with the winner.

I'm pretty sure MS didn't care to spend lot of money on COD DLC timed exclusivity this year when the series is waning in popularity and they have Halo 5 Guardians coming to blow it away.

Love it or hate it, agree with timed DLC or not, this is huge for Sony. People who don't ever visit gaming sites (like parents buying gifts for their kids), will see the bundles and see the TV advertising and make a purchasing decision based on that alone. Personally, I can't see ever playing another CoD game...but there are fans out there, and this will be nothing but win for the Playstation once the cash starts flowing this holiday!

@jnemesh: I don't think it's that big of a deal honestly. Just look at the sales figures for the PS3 CODs. They sold well across the board. It will sell well on all consoles like always.

Sony should be putting their money in first party as Microsolf is doing instead of relying in third parties time exclusive. XB1 is dominating 2015 in exclusives and it seems that it will also dominate 2016 in exclusives again. When did the Sony started copying MS strategy and viseversa?

@Aleperez75:

You're focusing on the ONLY area, in a small window, that XB1 has an edge. They have more 1st party AAA exclusives in the fall of the year. Well dammit I hope so since they haven't had ANY since the brought out Sunset Overdrive.

I counted all the games listed on wikipedia with a release date for 2015 for XB1 and PS4. I counted the same way for both, whether timed exclusive, console exclusive, company exclusive... whatever... I included all exclusives to be fair to both. RM is for Remastered. I also understand it's missing some stuff. For example Tomorrow Children and Hellblade are both set for this year, but using Wiki as an impartial reference for both XB1 and PS4, they don't have release dates or even windows on there, so I didn't count them. Level playing field for all. Here's the tale of the tape.

XB1 - 33 exclusives in all of 2015. 6 of them are arguably "AAA" - Forza 6, Halo 5, Fable Legends, Rise of the Tombraider and then 2 collections, the Gears trilogy RM and the Rare collection.

PS4 - 88 exclusives in all of 2015. 10 of them are arguably "AAA" - The Order 1886, Bloodborne, MLB 15, Heavy Rain & Beyond Remastered, FFX/X-2 HD RM, God of War III RM, Hot Shots Golf, Persona 5, Tear Away Unfolded RM, the Uncharted Trilogy RM and Until Dawn.

I didn't include No Man's Sky because to my knowledge we don't have a hard confirmed Date yet and while it's getting AAA treatment, you could argue it's not AAA.

You could also make arguments for Godzilla, God Eater 2, Amplitude or Once Piece, but for the sake of argument, even though they are disk releases I didn't count them as AAA.

Now to avoid arguments for those that want to jump on a game like the Order and say it's not AAA... All AAA means is that it is a major tent pole release by a major studio. Compare it to a summer blockbuster from a major movie studio. Not all of those have great ratings, some flop... same with games, but they still qualify as a AAA release.

So I would say... Sony clearly has more exclusives this year. If you take out the timed releases and the remastered you get - XB1's Forza 6, Halo 5 and Fable Legends vs PS4's The Order 1886, Bloodborne, MLB 15, Hot shots Golf, and Until Dawn.

If you prefer the 3 games XB1 is offering over the 5 offered by PS4, I totally get it... but it really, REALLY feels like we are stretching the truth to say "Microsoft is DOMINATING in exclusives" because there are more AAA exclusives on XB1 in a certain couple months of the year. It's like saying you're going to be the employee of the month three months from now, when you've been goofing off every other day of the year.

@Aleperez75: LMAO Sony actually has a first party catalog, MS has Gears, Halo, Forza, Fable, Gears, Halo, Forza Fable....They aren't putting money into anything other than their 4 franchises.....Sony has always put money into their 1st and 2nd party developers and that hasn't stopped......

Somehow I bet this deal has less to do with money and more to do with the fact that Halo is going to be launching and MS wouldn't be advertising BO3 to the levels that Activision would like so they went with the company that also has a 2:1 ratio and would actually advertise their game

@7tizz: I think you mean that MS was going to be pushing their own franchise that has been lowering in quality since Halo 2, and Activision wanted a partner that would actually push their game.....I somehow also doubt that Sony is "desperately" trying to attract the dude brah crowd considering they actually have a wide range of different games not just Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable repeat, and they would be quite disappointing that Sony doesn't just crap out brah shooters over and over and over....

And lets not forget the FACT that PS4 is close to 30 million sold while X1 is around 15 million IF that, since they still dont give SOLD to customer numbers only shipped to retailers

A win for both parties.

You're completely delusional dude. If anything Activision didn't want to keep associating Call Of Duty with the runner-up console which is Xbox. Playstation is current more popular in the US and the UK. Don't even get me started in the rest of Europe where its a bloodbath.

Call Of Duty broke up with Xbox/Microsoft, not the other way around.

BTW, if Playstation has such a "nerdy" JRPG image, how is it the most popular console? This "nerdy" image that PS4 has is just in your imagination. The rest of the world sees the PS4 as the go-to console for all kinds of games, not just RPGs, not just shooters. PS4 is a jack of all trades and the master of all of them.

@itechheads: Oh my god, fanboys are insufferable. IT'S NOTHING TO DO WITH EITHER CONSOLE, it's to do with the probably millions that Sony paid Activision. That and the aforementioned relationship through Destiny. Stop bickering with eachother over fanboy-ism and 'who's console is the best'. It's frickin' tiring.

@BladeTrinity114: Of course it has to do with the consoles. PS4's massive install base advantage helped them steal the deal from Microsoft. If it was purely about $$$ then Microsoft could have just offered them $1Billion and secured the partnership for a few more years.

Fanboyism has nothing to do with it. The fact that you call people fanboys when you don't agree with their opinions is ridiculous.

@itechheads: you are delusional. This is all about dollars, not player base, if that was the case they likely would not have gone timed exclusive seeing how X1 has been selling more consoles per month since last Christmas.

Either way, what doe sit even matter, this IP has dying slowly since Blops 2. This is like Sony signing that over the hill athlete just to watch him suck.

This series has been downhill since Modern Warfare 1 / Cod 4.

Blops 2 was good so was modern warfare 2...but this series is a shell of its former self.

X1 Wins June...

X1 Wins April

http://venturebeat.com/2015/05/14/april-2015-npd/

So....Sony have 4 months to X1's 3...

Backward Compatibility, better exclusives, better Network stability (lizard squad anyone?), where do you think this going to ultimately end?

I have both systems, so Im fine either way, but X1 will win this console generation eventually. Sheer size of the company will make this a one sided event by the end.

@gamersince78:

What are you talking about XBO didn't win June. June figures haven't even been announced yet. What you linked to are April results. You said Xbox One has been selling more consoles since Christmas. That's a flat-out lie as I clearly pointed out in my previous comment. Sony has won 4 months this year, Microsoft has only won 1 month. Sony have won every single month this year except for April. Exactly as I said and exactly as the links I provided prove.

I'm not going to get into the whole PS4 vs XB1 thing with you but if you think XBO will "win in the end' you are severely delusional. There is not 1 shred of evidence or data to back that up except for your wishful thinking.

Xbox One is losing America and the UK to the PS4 while PS4 has 70%-90% marketshare in the rest of Europe. How exactly do you think this will end? Will Xbox One just suddenly start selling because you can play some old 360 games like Viva Piñata and Banjo Kazooie? Stop dreaming dude and step into reality.

Enjoy your Xbox One, I'm sure its a great console but don't start spouting nonsense about "how things will end up" because its very clear how they will end and its with the PS4 continuing to widen that gap further and further.

@gamersince78: Your forgetting the entire YEAR that PS4 was selling like hotcakes as opposed to MS squeaking by...Its more 16 months to X1's 3......BTW Lizard squad yeah um they've been hitting XBL also and taken it down quite a few times just like PSN, so lets not pretend MS still has wizards guarding the impenetrable XBL...

FACT MS doesn't have better exclusives they have Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable, Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable....Sony has ALWAYS and will ALWAYS have the wider array of actual 1st and snd party exclusive franchises that cover a wider base than just the brah shooter.... MS pays for timed exclusivity, because its close to 30 million PS4s to 15 million XB1 they have lost more and more "exclusive" franchises to PC or PS4 ports due to the TWICE THE SIZE INSTALL BASE....

And you can jizz yourself all you want over BC, its not gonna matter ANY game getting a remastered edition wont be getting signed off on....Then on top of that remember BC on the 360 yeah umm they are giving the same BS they gave then how they were going to work until 100% of original Xbox games were all BC on the 360, and then 3 months later they quit...There are still to this day BROKEN AS HELL original Xbox games like Conker which can crash frequently and is still on their known issue page because they stopped so they stopped caring if the games worked right....I have zero faith that this time will be any different

@deadpoolio316: Hmmm where to start with your rambling...

First, lets deal with network and Lizard Squad. PSN was down for 2.5 days over Xmas while X1 was down between 4 - 8 hours depending on where in the world you live. PSN will never, ever, be as scalable as Xbox online, Azure pretty much guarantees that. Microsoft can spin up off premise Cloud servers at will, which is why a DDOS attack isn't that successful when dealing with X1. This is not even a contest, so don't try and pick a fight on this issue.

With regards to the backwards compatibility issue from ten years ago, I cant even say if you are right or wrong, I cant remember that far back, but let's assume you are right. That has very little bearing on this argument as who would want to go Backwards Compatible from HD to SD graphics? The X1 to 360 is still HD...you know...apples to apples.

Exclusives, we are not going to agree on, as it is personal taste, so we will call that a draw.

Yes, Ps4 has a huge lead over X1...again..i don't really care who wins, I win either way, but I would not bet against MSFT over the long haul. More money, more resources, more opportunity. They are just a much more forward thinking company than Sony, cant really argue that. With all that clout, why would you vote against them?

Sooner or later Sony is going to hit a wall where they cant outspend MSFT. It is no secret that Sony has financial issues, I just don't see this being a race they can keep up with. Hey, maybe I am wrong, hopefully I am, we all win if they both keep kicking ass.

@gamersince78: PS4 has been selling more consoles per month this whole year except April. That's a fact and I encourage you to look it up. Gamespot surely reports on NPD numbers.

Yeah, it is about money but HIGHER INSTALL BASE = MORE MONEY FOR ACTIVISION

So they can't justify shutting out Playstation gamers for a month anymore when PS4 gamers are their biggest source of revenue these days.

There you go with the "who cares anyway" comment. LOL. It's really funny actually how mad some people get that Sony's got COD DLC early now. Personally I put up with the opposite for years, I'm sure you can to.

I love the COD business model. Put a blue and gray camo tiger-skin on that bow without special stats and call it 20 bucks! But only for you PlayStation guys.
