Id faces fourth Doom

Texas studio announces it is hiring developers for next installment in its horror shooter series...and all its job listings are for PS3, 360, and PC.

Shortly before Doom 3 launched to much fanfare--and solid sales--in August 2004, id Software announced it was working on an all-new IP. That turned out to be Rage, a visually innovative, open-world driving and shooting game first unveiled at the MacWorld Expo last year. The game was a marked departure from the Texan studio's signature Quake and Doom series, whose future remained shrouded in mystery.

Although the possibility of a Quake 5 remains up in the air, id today formally announced that work is beginning on Doom 4. Typically such announcements are accompanied by bluster, but id took a different approach, using the news to hang up a big "now hiring" sign on its suburban Dallas headquarters, saying it was "expanding its internal team."

"Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth," id CEO Todd Hollenshead said in a statement. "It's critical for id Software to have the best creative minds in-house to develop games that meet the standards synonymous with our titles."

Though the Doom 4 announcement carefully avoided any mention of platforms, it did direct potential hires to id's official jobs page. There, every single job listing has "PlayStation 3, 360, and PC" as "applicable platforms." Many are specifically for Rage, but a listing for a cinematic art director asks for "an experienced and creative visionary...who want[s] to apply their craft to the development of legendary id brands like Quake and Doom" for the "PC, Xbox 360, [and] PS3."

Reps for id declined to comment on the listings or on any potential Doom 4 release date.

Traditionally, id has focused on the PC, farming out port duties--such as the Xbox Doom 3--to external operations. However, since Doom 3's release, the studio has shifted to focus on not only next-generation consoles, but also on the Mac platform as well, as revealed by the Rage announcement.

Doom 3 was excellent, my only complaint was the flashlight garbage, having to switch back and forth. It would have been better if it were from your helmet or something, but a very narrow beam, allowing you only to see a small fraction of the screen at any given time. As a sidenote, do you think they had duct tape or something on mars a hundred or so years in the future? Could you not just have taped it to your gun or something?

Give me a more frightening experience with FEAR-like ways to scare me, more Quake-like gameplay (faster player and enemies, more than 2-3 enemies per encounter, better enemy AI), less linear levels (but not to the point where I'll need a map to keep track of where I have to go) and keep the 20+ hour single player mode (unlike many other FPSs which can be completed in less than 10 hours *cough*Crysis*cough*) and you'll have me a 1st day buyer.

Ra-Devil you are speaking like it's fact. Your opinion does not equal fact. Just because you don't like Doom doesn't mean it was an awful game and you sound like one of those people who if something is popular it sucks wether you liked it before it was popular or not. The fact that you say this and GTA IV suck I can't give you much credibility to disprove that.

ok guys seriously, you DON'T need to upgrade your computer every year to run games. I own a single core amd cpu (not even 64 bit), agp video card (X850) and a gig of DDR ram and i only have run into trouble playing games like Crysis or The witcher, but they are still playable. Long as you know WTF you're doing you should have to make only minimal upgrades. What exactly would be the point of playing without a flashlight?? Original doom wasn't dark at all so you didn't need one.

Doom 4: Heaven Turns Against Me Chapter 1: The Madness Sarts All over again. I lay back on my sunbathing chair as I took a brake. I beat Hell The times now, and i needed a rest. Suddenly the sun wasent there. It started Raining. I quickly grabbed my Cunbathing chair and put it inside. But something was not right. I went outside to see that it was raining Blood! "Oh no!" I said and rushed out of my front door. There was a dead corpse of a male on my doorstep. Now i Defintly was certain that something was not right. I heard yells and screams. I grabbed my pistil from the shelf on my right and ran outside. I saw something strange. An argument was being held. An argument between Heaven and Hell. An Imp saw me and yelled in his launguge "THE DOOM MARINE IS HERE!!!!" The hell master quickly turned around and looked at me. "SLAUGHTER HIM!"He said with blood dripping from his mouth. Dozens of Former Humans, Fromer Sagents, Former Chaingunners and Imps cornerd me. I knew i couldent possibly make it this time. i was trapped.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how Doom 4 compares to games like BioShock and Condemned 2. I really want a great, scary, survival-horror'ish FPS that keeps raising entertainment standards.

I hope the make it more like classic doom than that 3rd one. It was good, but just wasn't doom with the pop up monsters and stupid grenade physics.

Thank God. I still have Doom 3 and play it often, and I was worried there wasn't going to be a Doom 4. And good to hear its on the PS3 as well (Even though I own a 360 I want more multi-platform games to ensure high sales and potiential sequals). I'm not sure where this one will go, but since Doom 3 was a remake of Doom, why not remake Doom 2 and bring Hell to Earth? It would be great to see New York, or DC in ruins with demons and Hell Knights running around.

I loved Doom 3 for the PC and Xbox. Sad thing is I never finished it but I got more than half-way with it and was more than satisfied with it. Doom 3 was a very creepy, scary shooter and also was very disturbing at points to. I hope Doom 4 will be twice that.

ZOMFG, DOOM 4 ON CONSOLES!!!! ZZZZZZOOOOOOMMMMMGGGG!!!!!! Ya know...because Doom wasn't on 32X back in the day and Doom 3 wasn't on Xbox...with its expansion pack. So whatever. Doom 4 is coming out, and that's all that matters. @Ra-Devil: Yes, it was just a shooter...that's Doom. You don't dig it? Don't play it. Doom was always known for three things: killer monster design, excellent atmosphere, and lots of shooting. That's it. Deal with it.

Doom 3 was just horrible in my opinion. It was just a shooter... nothing more. It had a "creepy" factor to it, but the gameplay was just aweful. Weapons were stupid in design, and the enemies were essentially bullet sponges... no matter where you shot them - meaning 5 shots to the foot OR 5 shots to the head. Hell, the fact that it was successful was mind-boggling to me. I mean, all it did was make Doom 1 and 2 look nicer... and that's all. No new innovation as far as gameplay, it just looked nice... and yet, because it was named Doom, and because it looked nice, it got good reviews and people loved it... I am sick of the way games are rated these days. If a game is a big-named title, it's gonna' get good reviews no matter what. The game could be re-hashed, look nicer, and do things worse than it's predecesor, and yet still earn good reviews. For example, I think GTA IV is the biggest cash-in ever. The game looks nice and has a physics engine... whoopdy-doo, so does Saints Row. It's called GTA... OMG, IT'S TEH AWESOEM... hell, GTA IV has even less content in it that previous GTAs, including GTA III, which is just sad, and yet people eat it up and call it a masterpiece of unrivaled glory... I hate the gaming world, esspecially when they make me waste my money like that.

I swear they better put a flashlight in this game that last longer than 12 seconds. Honestly, the game puts you on another planet but for some reason guns do not have flashlights, and the one you do have is a P-o-S. If this game improves on that then it will be a must buy.

Well it better be a actual sequel this time, unlike DOOM3 which was really nothing more than a remake of the original. Which I liked, but not nearly like the original game back in 1993.

Well said, xerxes. 'Course, maybe they should do something new with the deathmatch concept. Doom revolutionized multiplayer with the first installment, maybe they should do something new like demon-versus-demon. I'd certainly enjoy it if I could fly around and bite people's heads off, throwing fireballs at random strangers. :D

Yeah, the flashlight on it's own may add to suspense, but is it obsolete? Seriously, I'm pretty sure they'd be able to attach it to their helmets X-hundred years in the future, or at least hold it in their other hand while they carry a pistol or something. Maybe attach it to the gun... Flashlight controversy regardless, LONG LIVE THE PRINCE!!!!! Yes, prince. Wolfenstein is the king, and the day that bad@$$ comes out is a great day indeed.
