Mario anniversary bundles, Wii Remote Plus coming Nov. 7

Nintendo announces new Wii and DSi XL packages; release date for new controller and FlingSmash bundle nailed down.

Nintendo's Wii hardware crossed the finish line in third place in September, reportedly selling only 254,000 units in that month in North America compared to 312,000 PlayStation 3 units and 484,000 Xbox 360 units. Now it appears the Japanese game maker is hoping to rekindle enthusiasm with two new system bundles, a fresh controller, and a game due out next month.

Nintendo today announced that on November 7 retailers will begin selling a red Nintendo Wii bundle, the Wii Remote Plus, a new DSi XL bundle, and a new game, FlingSmash.

Nintendo is bundling up for November.
Nintendo is bundling up for November.

The new Wii package--in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.--will include a red system, copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports, a Wii Remote Plus, and everything else normally associated with the system. It will debut at $200 and will be a limited edition.

Also being released on November 7 will be a new $180 DSi XL bundle. Similar to the Wii package, the DSi XL bundle is also a limited edition and is colored red in honor of the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. This package will include a DSi XL with three themed graphics on its face, a copy of Mario Kart DS, and three preinstalled titles: Brain Age Express: Arts & Letters, Brain Age Express: Math, and Photo Clock.

Also included in today's announcement was a release date for the Wii Remote Plus. Nintendo had previously confirmed the existence of the controller following a leaked image of the peripheral but had not specified a release date for it. It will debut on November 7 and will be sold in all-new Wii hardware packages and bundles. It will also be sold separately beginning on that date for $39.99. The Wii Remote Plus combines the original Wii Remote with the MotionPlus add-on.

Finally, Nintendo officially announced the FlingSmash bundle. The new SKU bundles a Wii Remote Plus with a copy of the game. According to Nintendo, FlingSmash "combines the hands-on fun of tennis with the nonstop action and instant gratification of pinball." Nintendo employed a similar tactic with Wii Play when the company included a Wii Remote with the title. That game went on to become the best-selling game of all time in the United States. The FlingSmash bundle will retail for $49.99. For more on FlingSmash, check out GameSpot's hands-on preview.

@VenkmanPHD With FPS, controls is EVERYTHING. The Wii has the best controls for FPS. I care not about online. Online play ruined competitive gaming. I would rather see the look on my opponent's face when I rip him a new one, not hear him scream from New Delhi.

@Oni_Taedo You must have some kind of malfunction if you think CoD for the Wii is the better choice..... I never thought I'd ever hear anyone say that, no matter how hardcore the fanboy.

@Spartan-1657 Wii controls are better for FPS. So getting CoD on the Wii is a much better choice. @monson21502 The 360's sales are the lowest. With the Wii being just behind the PS3.

as someone who likes both the move and the wii, i like to use my ps3 move and eye controller with my pc more than the ps3 via move controller drivers and software. IMO sony was dumb to make the move and the eye connect through usb, since it makes it to easy to softmod it for use with the pc.

@Gelugon_baat So what you're saying is if I'm poor I should shut up, and the only way I can prove a point is if I just buy a copy of a game I like 10 times over. Ok got it.

all these ps fan boys bashing the wii need to buy this new wii bundle. instead of buying a move bundle and a extra move and a sub controller that they need for some one player move games. for only 10 bucks more you could have a whole new console with a ton of new games and some of them are great, alot better then anything you will be playing with move...

Rather wait for the 3DS actually. It is a good value there though. The wii hardware is becoming outdated too.

Nintendo has done it again! It's cool how players who get the Wii Remote Plus won't need a Motion Plus Accessory to use in games like Wii Sports Resort now. And I own a Wii and it cost a lot to buy a separate Motion Plus for my Wii Remote. I,m telling you, this is going to be an awesome deal. The black Wii that was released a while back and it was the same price as this new red Wii, so a deal like this probably going to make it $149.99 soon.

The limited editions look great - especially the Wii version - I'm sure the UK will be paying £200 not $200 though Softco's note that $200 is equivalent to £150 in UK money = £ip-off Britain

Relax folks casual/Mini games games are dying out on the Wii, they have been doing so for a while now, they plain don't make money. It's time developers looked at what really sells and brings in profit (Resident Evil 4, Monster Hunter 3, Call of Duty) and why it sells.

Dear Nintendo: I have owned all of your systems, but it is time to stop allocating marketing resources towards repackaging your existing products. Please redirect resources towards increasing your variety of high-quality titles. Listen to your own Miyamoto, "There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with video games, there should be nothing to worry about." Thank you, Boz

I like the red DSi XL. The only thing that sucks is it doesn't play older GBA games and I have a lot of those. I might just wait for the 3DS at this point. i really don't need to own 3 DS systems.

Ah, Nintendo keeps rehashing their original creations, and they keep failing at creating new IP's. This is yet another attempt to milk the Wii, only to have a mediocre library of games.

@ iluminat23, you might want to keep an eye on the PS3 Move then. I don't find too many of the Move's games interesting right now, but they will probably make better ones in the future

@Jebril If you want game-makers to make games that you like, then do shell out the money for their games that you actually liked and get others who think like you to do so too. If people who prefer "shallower" games shell out more money than you did, then the game-makers would certainly spend their ultimately limited resources and time making more games for them instead of for you - only because they get more returns. If you want to quarrel with casual gamers and compete for games from game-makers, then do so with your wallet - and certainly not by pounding away at your keyboard making sanctimonious statements like the ones that you did.

@Jebril
The problem with casual gaming isn't that casual gamers are having fun it's that casual gaming kills the hardcore games.
That is your perception - and one that you made to sound all too generalized.

My perception is that I believe that the ones "killing" core games are the game-makers themselves - especially if they divert away resources from the development of core games to casual games. But I would still say that they can't really be blamed for doing so when they are only following the smell of money - which is what they are trying to do, regardless of the kind of games that they are making. If you still need someone to blame, I would suggest the game-makers themselves are a better target for your blame.
...people who are actually good at video games feel a lil disappointed at the new standard of shallowness found in video games.
If some people are good at core games, then they are good at said core games. If some others are good at casual games, then they are good at them. I make no distinction on whoever is superior based on what games they play, for I see that a matter of preference is no concrete reason for one group to claim superiority over the other.

Shallowness of games is a perception; there is no standard for it.

@Expo_Smacko Any console (or anything for that matter) collects dust, whether they are in use or not. This is why you need to clean them. Don't use that for an excuse for why you don't play a game system.

@Gelugon_baat The problem with casual gaming isn't that casual gamers are having fun it's that casual gaming kills the hardcore games. It's pretty obvious most developers are making their games more accessible, more user-friendly, and taking depth away from their games to aim them for a broader audience. While that's good that does make people who are actually good at video games feel a lil disappointed at the new standard of shallowness found in video games.

Wouldn't it be great if the Wii Mario Anniversary bundle came with Super Mario All-Stars Wii, Wii Sports, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii for $199? That would be a heck of a great deal and it saves you 2000 Wii Points from buying all four NES Mario games from the VC with your new red Wii.

@monson21502 Yes, I'm certain everyone at Nintendo was totally thinking of releasing a Red Wii to symbolize blood and momentum stopping. It has nothing to do with the fact that they're into the color red because of Mario, or that their logo used to be red, or that the NSMBW box is red for Mario. Y'know, it ended up being the #2 SKU in the US, so maybe red just screams "AWESOME!"

Those thrashing motion controls may call it a gimmick, part of the perceived "scourge" that is casual gaming, or even claim it to be "ruining gaming", but if consumers find these products fun, then they met their goal of being fun and their makers achieve one of their corporate goals anyway while making a buck on the side. Motion controls may require the user to hop all around a room or waggle their limbs all over in embarrassing ways, but if it's required of the user, who are their detractors to say it's ridiculous? It's not any more fundamentally different from using any other forms of controls that are needed to interact with an entertainment product. Detractors can claim the more established forms of game controls to be the "real" way to play games, but I would describe these controls with a word that is far more appropriate: "conventional". Trumpeting them to be far greater than they would appear to be is nothing more than the rant of embittered traditionalists to me. (I refuse to use the words "purists" to describe them, as some of them would style themselves to be.) Thrash these gimmicky products all they like, but to those who like playing games on them, they are having fun jumping all around like excited apes and/or shimmying their limbs around like on an acid trip - but their detractors aren't. That is all that matters to those who would like motion controls. Detractors may throw insults all the way to the end of the product's life cycle, but to its fans, they are laughing away at a mirror.
