Mark Wahlberg playing Nathan Drake

<i>Max Payne</i> star re-collaborating with <i>Fighter</i> director on big-screen version of Uncharted; Pesci, De Niro being courted.

Two years ago, Mark Wahlberg got the chance to play hard-boiled game antihero Max Payne in the movie of the same name (pictured). Given the film's poor reviews, that honor turned out to be more dubious than not. Now, though, it appears that the Oscar-nominated actor will be getting another chance to portray an iconic game character--Nathan Drake, hero of the Uncharted series.

Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.
Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.

Speaking with MTV, Wahlberg said he was hoping to film the big-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog's game this coming summer. The project is being written and directed by David O. Russell, a frequent collaborator of Wahlberg's. The pair has worked together on such films as the Gulf War action-dramedy Three Kings, the existential comedy I Heart Huckabees, and the upcoming boxing drama The Fighter.

"David is writing [the script] now, and David is one of the best writer-directors I've ever worked with," Wahlberg said. "And the idea that he has is just insane. … It's not going to be the watered-down version; that's for sure."

Wahlberg also revealed some potential casting for the Uncharted film, which points to a loose adaptation of the game. Russell is apparently writing two roles--that of Drake's father and uncle--with two specific actors in mind. The former part is apparently being offered to Robert de Niro, with the latter being tailor made for Joe Pesci. Neither character appears in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

hhhh,,for almighty's sake nathan drake should be portrayed by someone with at least sarcastic skills because the character has a sarcastic built personality,,,,,and whalberg lacks such features ,,he is not funny enough ......I think Bradley Cooper would make a good choice for starters...

No Nathan Fillion = bullcrap. I had my fingers crossed and Hollywood just dropped the ball. We could have had a perfect clone of Drake in both looks and voice, now we'll just have a guy that mumbles his lines. Sounds like they wrecked the plot too. They should have went with Fillion and somebody like Stacy Keach to play Sully and this movie would have been gold.

@Yammer55 Posted Nov 25, 2010 2:36 am CT I kinda picture Nathan Fillion playing Drake - YES! See, THAT would be awesome. Wahlberg has no sense of comedy compared with Fillion, not to mention Nathan Fillion already LOOKS like Nathan Drake. They've made a mistake, and they're vereing off script. I predict disappointment.

Not only he is like the worst actor for this role, but after seeing some story details, it has every chance of flopping more than max payne did. Thank you for ruining my favorite videogame franchise for this gen.

Well if it only tries to loosely follow the game then the potential is there for greatness. With Max Payne the movie it seems like they were trying to just change everything but still keep it the same. There was also some inconsistencies, only people on the drug hallucinate BUT Payne hears a monster coming for him before he even dopes up!!!! I don't think that Mark Wahlberg is the best fit for this movie either. I just don't see him delivering Nathan's little funny quips with the same smoothness. Maybe nolan North can be given a shot, he is already the voice. Some other actors possibly Hugh Jackman(maybe too old), Ryan Reynolds or even Ewan McGregor????

This is a terrible choice. Wahlberg is an incredible actor, don't get me wrong, but his movies range from crime thrillers (The Departed) or action (Shooter), or dramas (Boogie Nights), all of these roles very serious. To me, he can't be wise-cracking and sarcastic like Nate is.

I love Mark Wahlbergs acting but he is the wrong actor to portray Nathan Drake. There is only one actor that can do that correctly and that is Nathan Fillion. Just watch this guys work on Firefly/ Serenity and the TV show Castle.

FIllion supporters need to shut up. The man is pushing 40, and much like Wahlberg shouldn't be anywhere near a role portraying a mid-20's adventurer, especially given they're trying to kick-start a franchise. The logic of both the people making the movie and FIllion fans boggles the mind.

This game is best experienced as a game. To just watch the sequences passively as a movie might be boring, because they'll be similar to a lot of movie sequences that have already been done.

And I must comment again...for the love of all that is holy.. movie directors/producers need to stop butchering video game to movie adaptations. They should ask the fans who and what they want to see and try to stick to story of the actual game, regardless if we have played through the story before...I know its not about fan service but about money, but I think they would actually make more money if they serviced the actual fans of the game...perhaps one day I will live to see this happen, but it seems to be a long way off.

The game doesn't even need a movie adaption; the game has so much cinematic cut scenes so that, no matter what the film studios do, anyone who has played the game will not be impressed because it simply isn't what they fell in love with in the first place.

actually, marky mark could fit this role very well. if you can get over that he wont look the same as the video game character, which is likley where a large degree of the shock and aww is coming from. i doubt half of the people on this forum were eventually going to go see the movie anyway.

I'm a huge Mark Wahlberg fan, but he's better suited towards the tough guy roles...I honestly don't think he can pull off the sarcrastic, wise-ass nature of Drake...I agree with others in saying Nathan Fillion should've been casted as Drake as he not only looks like Nathan Drake but also acts like him naturally!

Sweet yet another reason not to see this movie. You would think that someone would have seen The Happening and realized that Mark Walberg cannot act. You would think that Walberg would remember Max Payne and realize that video games movies are terrible in and of themselves.

EPIC fail. Wahlberg is great at supporting roles playing interesting angry guys. He sucks and is BLAND as hell as a leading man, and whenever he's the leading guy, the picture underperforms at the box office. Nathan Fillion is the man for this role as clear as day. I am a huge fan of the games and will NEVER pay for a ticket to see a version w/ Wahlberg. Again EPIC FAIL. Russell is a druggie and will ruin what should be a fantastic adventure movie.

I actually think the director is a good choice. He has a colourful visual style and a good sense of humour, which I think will go well with Uncharted. I honestly can't think of a better writer/director to take this on. Wahlberg's just the icing on the cake (he is so funny in I Heart Huckabees). Even though most videogame to movie translations are bad, I don't see why people are bagging this just due to the actor and writer/director involved. It makes me think that most people saying this will be "terrible" haven't seen any David O. Russel movies. At least wait 'till you see the trailer until you start criticizing it. Also, I have no problem with them creating a new story for the game. I imagine it to be another chapter in the story of Drake. We've already experienced the stories of the first two games, so there's no need to retread old territory. If you want to experience those stories again, just play the games again; they're pretty cinematic already.

I like Mark Wahlberg, and love Uncharted. But, I do NOT want to see Wahlberg in anything Uncharted related. So many other actors could have filled this role. I really think this is a poor casting choice. But hey, maybe he can pull it off, but I just don't see it.

Sound like a boring movie. The games are purposely action packed and great, but I can't imagine this turning into an interesting plot. Games like Assassins Creed or Gears of War have very intricate foundations that would make for an interesting movie. A treasure hunter tomb raider character fits the cookie cutter b film genre. That's why they had to hire someone like Mark Wahlberg to pull in more viewers. I would buy shares in another Prince of Persia movie before risking it on this.

I guess I can deal with Mark Wahlberg, but what I can't deal with is why are they going to change the story around? I believe the story in the game is already good enough there's no need to rewrite a new story.

Mark Wahlberg is good actor but he is not the most suitable actor for this role. his box office is usually are-in the avg of 150m and for his most anticipated film max Payne just grossed 85 m. to play Nathan Drake, Naughty Dog can choose: 1. Hugh Jackman 2. brad pitt 3.Tom Cruise
