Mark Wahlberg playing Nathan Drake

Max Payne star re-collaborating with Fighter director on big-screen version of Uncharted; Pesci, De Niro being courted.

Two years ago, Mark Wahlberg got the chance to play hard-boiled game antihero Max Payne in the movie of the same name (pictured). Given the film's poor reviews, that honor turned out to be more dubious than not. Now, though, it appears that the Oscar-nominated actor will be getting another chance to portray an iconic game character--Nathan Drake, hero of the Uncharted series.

Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.
Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.

Speaking with MTV, Wahlberg said he was hoping to film the big-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog's game this coming summer. The project is being written and directed by David O. Russell, a frequent collaborator of Wahlberg's. The pair has worked together on such films as the Gulf War action-dramedy Three Kings, the existential comedy I Heart Huckabees, and the upcoming boxing drama The Fighter.

"David is writing [the script] now, and David is one of the best writer-directors I've ever worked with," Wahlberg said. "And the idea that he has is just insane. … It's not going to be the watered-down version; that's for sure."

Wahlberg also revealed some potential casting for the Uncharted film, which points to a loose adaptation of the game. Russell is apparently writing two roles--that of Drake's father and uncle--with two specific actors in mind. The former part is apparently being offered to Robert de Niro, with the latter being tailor made for Joe Pesci. Neither character appears in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Nothing against Mark Wahlberg but he's just completely wrong for this part. I probably won't go see this in the theater now, sad cause I really was excited at he prospect of this movie. Had it been Nathan Fillion I would have gone to see it on opening day, now it'll just be another movie on my netflix queue that I'll get to at some point.

Damn, after looking up who Nathan Fillion is, he is one handsome man. He looks exactly like Drake too.

@MorbisDraconis They could make a solid movie by just playing all of the cut scenes and turning some of the gameplay into scenes like they did with Red Dead Redemption. Not that it would be theater worthy, but still entertaining.

Ehh... Kinda Want. Feels okay, but I just don't see him fully grasping the charm Nathan Drake has. Nothing against him as an actor, I'm just not feeling it all the way, but I can't really think of any one else better right now.

both actors mentioned are too old... its not like theyre being cg'ed into a mechanical suit here. and 'shooter' is a horrible choice for nathan drake and at this point its better they just make a full cg movie instead.

Nathan Fillion would be a perfect fit. Plus, the story is probably gonna suck. These jewels should stay as video games. The film industry can screw off when it comes game adaptations.

I prefer Michael C. Hall (dexter) has Nathan Drake than Mark Wahlberg, Michael look like a funny character and crazy at both time.

I don't want to see a spinoff of a game. I want to see the game itself as a movie. I don't get why studios do this to video game fans.

i think hes a good fit. i think that the loose tie in with the plot of the game will destroy the movie. the movie could turn into a more mature indiana jones though. i hope for the later

Not what I was hoping for. He's okay. But he looks and acts like a meat head sometimes and that isn't what Nathan Drake is all about.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Yet another promising videogame licensed movie down the TOILET. I'm starting to wonder if there's some conspiracy to take any and all credibility out of every videogame movie ever created. Think about it: -What's the greatest videogame movie ever? Maybe Tomb Raider? Which was totally average -Every movie that seems to be taking the right steps (e.g. Halo, Metal Gear) inexplicably get cancelled -Other movies like Max Payne, which could be cool, end up sucking a$$ because of their crappy cast and directors who seem like they want the movie to play like an 80s video game on acid Seriously, this could have been a better, more intelligent Indiana Jones. And now it sucks. And for the record, Mark Wahlberg's nomination was a complete fluke. He played a 1-dimensional jerk in The Departed. He's awful.

Alright i got nothing against Mark Wahlberg. i think he is a great actor. But he should not be in this role. Only 1 person could have possibly done this role to the T, and thats nathan Fillion. He looks. acts. and talks just like Nathan Drake. If any1 has seen Firefly. then they know i am right. Another game - to - movie that is ruined by wrong choice of cast. Shame, i was really looking forward to this.

@IndianaPwns39 Dude, no amount of good acting could have saved those movies...(save Invincible, it had its good moments). But how was he the weakest in Departed? That was the film he was nominated for. And no, he was in no way pushed by Scorcesee as he based his performance on his old parole officer from when he was a kid. Every scene he was in he stole the show! Eh, but I guess you're set on your opinion and I'm set on mine; C'est la vie.

Why dont they just use Nolan North everything is allready modeled after him, voice, facial movement, body language. It would make sense. Also I don't think Marky Mark would have the same swagger that Nate Drake has. Seriously though when he needs to be funny he doesn't have it watch the other guys he couldnt pull it off.

@Rizion89 I enjoyed The Departed but Whalberg was easily the weakest link in that film. While the other actors are talented, it was clear Whalberg was being pushed by Scorcese. The Happening, Max Payne, The Other Guys, The Lovely Bones, Invincible, Four Brothers - He was the worst thing in these already bad movies. So being in one good movie gives me no hope for this one.

I'm not usually very excited about movie adaptations of games (except for the Mass Effect movie, that if done correctly could really be a hit!) And in the case of Uncharted, beside the fact that it is one of the best games out there, its not really movie material. And just to make things worse they go and choose this duffus to play Nathan (with the right actor he could really work, since his personality is in fact one of the most memorable things of the video games). Mark Wahlberg is as emotional and expressive as a cardboard cutout of himself. And sometimes he reaches the point of being annoying (in The Happening for example, beside the fact that it was a bad movie overall and that M. Night is a terrible director, Wahlberg was just annoying, from beginning to finish!) To sum it up, I had some very faint excitement about this movie because its Uncharted nevertheless. But this just shows how they are planning to handle it, and my excitement is bordering negative right now. "Hello Donkey, how's it hanging? Say hi to your mother for me, ok?"

The Max Payne (film) didn't get good reviews, but << LINK REMOVED >>. Mark Wahlberg's mere presence may have saved the movie from being a commercial bust - I happen to suspect this as some of my acquaintances watched that film only because Mark Wahlberg is in it. Mark Wahlberg doesn't even look like Nathan Drake. I am tempted to assume that Columbia Pictures thinks that he is some sort of insurance against a box office bomb, but it would appear here that David O. Russell picked him because "the pair has worked together" before. I suppose that Mr. Russell would be ignoring the accusations of playing favorites after this.

Oh God. Mark Whalberg and adding in Drake's father. Uncharted movie is confirmed a failure. By the way, if you say "You haven't seen it yet!" I'll tell you that I already hate it. Drake is supposed to be an average joe, not some ripped ex-rapper-turned-actor that can't show even the slightest bit of emotion or comic timing.

Bad choice imo, Nathan Fillion would of been a waaaaay better choice if you ask me. Plus he looks alot more like Nathan, Pffff, ohh well, i starting to get into the movie idea when rumours of Nathan Fillion where spreading around, but now i've lost hope in the movie. Will Hollywood ever learn?

Wahlberg is an awful choice for Nathan Drake. He doesn't have the comedic flair to portray him properly. He's a tough guy actor. Why couldn;t they have chosen Nathan Fillion from Firefly? He'd be perfect and really wanted the role! His sense of humor fit the Drake character to a tee.
