Mark Wahlberg playing Nathan Drake

<i>Max Payne</i> star re-collaborating with <i>Fighter</i> director on big-screen version of Uncharted; Pesci, De Niro being courted.

Two years ago, Mark Wahlberg got the chance to play hard-boiled game antihero Max Payne in the movie of the same name (pictured). Given the film's poor reviews, that honor turned out to be more dubious than not. Now, though, it appears that the Oscar-nominated actor will be getting another chance to portray an iconic game character--Nathan Drake, hero of the Uncharted series.

Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.
Mark Wahlberg is going from Max Payne to Nathan Drake.

Speaking with MTV, Wahlberg said he was hoping to film the big-screen adaptation of Naughty Dog's game this coming summer. The project is being written and directed by David O. Russell, a frequent collaborator of Wahlberg's. The pair has worked together on such films as the Gulf War action-dramedy Three Kings, the existential comedy I Heart Huckabees, and the upcoming boxing drama The Fighter.

"David is writing [the script] now, and David is one of the best writer-directors I've ever worked with," Wahlberg said. "And the idea that he has is just insane. … It's not going to be the watered-down version; that's for sure."

Wahlberg also revealed some potential casting for the Uncharted film, which points to a loose adaptation of the game. Russell is apparently writing two roles--that of Drake's father and uncle--with two specific actors in mind. The former part is apparently being offered to Robert de Niro, with the latter being tailor made for Joe Pesci. Neither character appears in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune or its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

I liked Max Payne. But for those of who who know who Nathan Fillion is (Serenity/Firefly) then you know that he, without a doubt, IS Nathan Drake. He looks, sounds, and conducts himself like the character IMO. It's too late now, but he would have been 100% perfect for this role.

If It's not Nathan Fillion give David Boreanaz or Jeffrey Donovan a shot. Bruce Campbell should have a part in this movie somewhere.

That's not the Drake I was looking for. But Wahlberg is a good actor... I don't know. Cautiously optimistic.

Hmm. He's done good work but he doesn't have the charisma or the funny for the part. Pretty disappointing really, Uncharted has the goods to make for some pretty ballIin' action flicks, but it all starts with your lead, and I don't think Wahlberg's the right guy. Fillion would've been perfect, but I guess he's getting up there in years. Goddammit.

They couldn't have mis-cast the part of Drake any worse if they tried.

Nathan Fillion should have been Drake. He would have been perfect for the role. Sorry but I dont see Wahlberg as Drake at all. I cant even remember a movie I have seen him in where he even smiles much less cracks a joke. So many better actors they could have had.

Even tho i like Mark Wahlberg as an actor, he srysly does not fit to be Drake period, there aren't many actors in the movie industry that can actually fit perfectly as Drake, and in my point of view, Uncharted has a great potential for a movie franchise, so the lead actor, should be carefully picked, but by the looks of it, they are srysly gonna screw this one up, Mark Wahlberg, is simply not Uncharted material.

i think this would be an awsome movie if Steven Spielberg or James Cameron would do the script, directing part, as for the actor, i think that Ryan Reynolds would be a better Drake than Mark Wahlberg. I don't think Mark Wahlberg will be a good nathan drake!

Mark is a decent choice. I just hope the overall movie is good. I like Mark as an actor so I really look forward to this! Just not sure if Mark can hit Drake's style/sense of humor. Maybe.

Can't freakin wait to see this movie. After playing the first Uncharted, I assumed they may make a movie. And after playing the second one, I knew they HAD to make one. Not sure how I feel about Mark Wahlberg playing as Drake but he's a good actor so I'm sure it will work fine. I mean, I didn't see Jake Gyllynhal (sp?) as being a good Prince but he did a great job.

This duo works just like Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich. Anderson's always trying to get his wife to star in his films (the irony, never saw her in AVP) but this Russell guy is going overboard, he seems to have a fixation on Wahlberg from what I'm reading.

@islu88 agreed on Ferrel sucks now, but Wahlberg kept me going in the movie, I'm just saying he was really funny and kept me entertained. He also was pretty good in Date Night (another bad movie where he stands out)

@NooDLES-666, because it was a playable movie that hardly anyone saw/played that it would appeal to. Basically this could be the new indiana jones, and that doesnt only appeal to people on the 360/Wii but to people who never played a single videogame aswell. @Dragonsingh3000, yeah they should have gone with him although he might be a bit too old at this point. But Wahlberg is a bigger name and I do like him as an actor so I wont complain (too much).

They might as well make Mutt Williams adventures, since he's Indy's son and all, wich is who they got most of the ideas for this game...really Hollywood? you ran out of creative Screenwriters?, bunch of lazy directors.

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! Don't get me wrong, Marky Mark is actually a really good actor, but there is no way he would be able to play Drake as well as, say, Nathan Fillon. I mean, come on! He practically IS Nathan Drake!

Your man irishscott99 makes a good point. The reason I think everyone is against Wahlberg, or the reason I myself am nervous, is that he always plays really wooden hard-men types. Maybe he's got a comedian in him that we don't know about.

im going to have to wait and see how this turns out. Im kinda speculative on the choice of Wahlberg playing Nathan Drake, but im sure it'll all look great in the end final production.

I, like the majority of the rational world, was rooting for Nathan Fillion to play Drake. But given that the fans rarely get exactly what they want, Wahlberg might not be a bad choice. But he HAS to learn to lighten up and, god forbid, smile!

And yes, I rooted for Nathan Fillion too. His personality as seen in Castle, Firefly, and Serenity so matches Nathan Drake...and besides, they have the same first name for Christ sake. There goes my 2 cents.

That's like casting Michael Cera as Ezio or Altair... JUST WRONG! Nathan Fillion, Clive Owen, Ewan McGregor, lots of other people that aren't ridiculous. On that note, why not give it to Michael Cera or Jack Black it would make more sense?
