Medal of Honor: Airborne Final Hands-On: Floating to Your Doom and the Spoils of War

We've survived the first mission of this wartime first-person shooter intact, and we're back with a full status report.

What could a World War II first-person shooter do that hasn't been done before? Well, if our time with Medal of Honor: Airborne is any indication, there's still plenty of room for the genre to grow. We played through the first dramatic level of the game this week, and we're impressed with just how visceral and exciting it was. So grab your grenades and ready your parachutes, because you won't have long to wait; Medal of Honor: Airborne ships in less than two weeks.

The game begins with a brief introduction to the mechanics of parachuting--and it's a good thing, because it's not as easy as it sounds. Steering to the proper destination takes a good deal of precision, and you need to be conscious of your speed and facing. You can flare your parachute to slow you down, but gravity is inevitable. Actually making the landing also seems tougher than you'd expect, but if you manage not to botch it in the Xbox 360 version, you'll have a shiny new achievement to show for it. When parachuting, you're looking for the green clouds of smoke, where you'll find relative safety and a number of friendly troops to provide covering fire.

Making a flared landing is tougher than it sounds.
Making a flared landing is tougher than it sounds.

The first level, Infinite Mischief, is the very definition of trial by fire. As 82nd Division paratrooper Boyd Travers, your task is to destroy four antiaircraft turrets in the Sicilian city of Adanti. You will choose your loadout before the mission even begins, though it's worth noting that you can exchange your current weapon with those you find on the battlefield later. Faced with a few options, we armed ourselves with an M1928 Thompson submachine gun, an M1 Garand rifle, and a trusty Colt .45 handgun. Once the mission loaded, we had little time to react, and after a brief cutscene, we descended nervously toward the looming city.

It didn't take long for us to notice that this isn't your typical linear shooter. We could land essentially anywhere we wanted to, and in our first attempt, it happened to be smack-dab in the middle of a throng of enemy soldiers who were quick to fill us with lead. It was immediately clear just how important our parachuting skills would become, because the better you steer, the better your chances are of staying alive for the mission. We improved in our second attempt, landing safely on a rooftop and surveying the situation below.

The iron-sights view gives you plenty of room to maneuver.
The iron-sights view gives you plenty of room to maneuver.

But things looked pretty bleak, considering the battlefield teeming with enemies. The recoil on our tommy gun made it tough to fire with accuracy, so we decided to play with the iron sights. When you switch to this view, you're no longer able to move, and the movement controls become leaning controls. This gave us a lot more freedom of movement than we were used to when leaning in other shooters, so we were able to pick off multiple targets without moving from our position.

Drop Zone

We eventually made it to the ground, where we started to make progress toward the first turret. Even with the help of our fellow paratroopers, we had to move slowly and carefully. You won't run-and-gun in Medal of Honor: Airborne. Careful aiming is important, and you need to be constantly aware of your surroundings. As far as we can tell, you aren't able to lie prone. However, we made good use of sandbags and other objects to stay hidden. From behind these objects, you can enter the iron-sights view and lean forward to pop out from behind your cover and take potshots at your foes. If you're used to cover-focused games like Gears of War or Rainbow Six: Vegas, it may take a few moments to get used to the scheme, but it didn't take us long to get comfortable with staying out of harm's way until we could clear out enough room to move forward.

Earning medals gets you weapon upgrades.
Earning medals gets you weapon upgrades.

Then the mission got even tougher, given that two of the antiaircraft turrets were on the roof of a large, multistory mansion. A sniper at the top made it tough to advance--in fact, this part of the game reminded us of the infamous "Sniper Town" level of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Once we made it through, we found the roof was no picnic either. The game throws a multitude of enemies at you, and the artificial intelligence is tough. Your enemies rush into buildings to pick you off from windows, flank you from all sides, and move to higher levels for a better shot. Through it all, they are constantly chattering in Italian, which gives the impression that these guys are indeed coordinating their attacks. Your teammates do the same, urging you to look out, calling you by name, and shouting at you to press forward.

As we became more familiar with the weapons, we started to become more proficient with them and unlock upgrades. After a run of successful kills with the tommy gun, we earned a pistol grip for it, which made us even more accurate. Whenever you earn an upgrade in this manner, the game goes into slow-motion, reminiscent of the "bullet time" sequences of shooters like Max Payne, which gives you a chance to savor the moment. And speaking of achievements, those obsessed with earning them in the Xbox 360 version will be happy to note that you start earning achievements from the moment you begin playing, so expect your skill to pay off immediately.

The production values in Medal of Honor: Airborne are terrific, thanks to the Unreal 3 engine, which powers the graphics. The level of detail in the environments is impressive, down to the clutter of ransacked rooms and the detailed textures of the mansion's walls. The lighting and shadows are also striking. Bright spotlights provide a contrasting glow against the darkness of alleys and balconies, and shadows flicker against stone walls and iconic statues. The sound design will also grab you. The din of battle is constantly bombarding your senses, and it imparts a frightening sense of urgency.

The level of environmental detail is fantastic.
The level of environmental detail is fantastic.

We've only scratched the surface of Medal of Honor: Airborne, but we're impressed by what we've seen so far. Rather than a linear crawl from one objective to the next, the game lets you accomplish your goals in any order you wish, from any direction. It's an impressive and daunting way to begin your missions, and we look forward to seeing if the full game can carry that momentum from beginning to end. With any luck, Airborne will prove that World War II shooters still have a lot to offer, and we can't wait to get our hands on the final game.

I played the demo about 10 times the first day I downloaded it. I really think it's great, only thing missing is... Blood, Prone, Clipped Ragdolls, Destructible Environments, destructible props. That sounds like a lot but really now this is NEXT GEN. We should be able to shoot the ragdoll after it dies... That's really stupid how you can't. And blood, when I shoot someone in the face with a gun point blank I think there should be some blood splatter or mist puff. The game is rated teen yes but teenagers play worse and I think Medal Of Honor really should have stepped up and made a game for a more mature audience. AND WHAT'S WITH NO PRONE?? That's completely retarded not being able to lay down, 3/4's of all snipers are prone during a shot. If they want to use sniper rifles in there game they should have integrated a prone position. As mentioned before this is the Unreal Engine. Why can't I blow up a table with a grenade. It makes the game feel really sluggish and restricted not being able to smash props or damage props. Demo Score: Graphics: 10/10 - They really impressed me on the HDTV, I was blown away with the effects and I think they did a bang up job. Sounds: 9.5/10 - The MP40 Sound was amazing, I loved the ricochet sounds and the impact. Although I was hoping for a cooler Thompson sound, the Thompson is one of the most used machine guns in any WWII game and I think a better sound could have been put to place. Style: 10/10 Very unique with the upgrade system and with the Parachute or-deal. Gameplay: Well... As said, Not having prone sucks. The "Fight anywhere" thing is really innovative and I love it, for that I give Gameplay a 9/10. Overall this demo really surprised me and I cannot wait for the full version to hit stores. I give this biased on the demo so far a 9.2/10

Left and right lean, up pops you up from behind cover, and down lays down to a prone position. It's analog, and the whole thing is pretty well implemented -- you can fluidly throw head fakes and duck bullets, LOL.

The demo rocks, once I get used to the controls, the game starts to be really fun. I noticed some places where graphically the lighting is really nice, characters look detailed too. Can't wait playing the full game.

I have played the demo and i think it is great. But there is no prone and i like to see more of the stuff get wreck. Like if you shoot at a wooden table, it should get shot up. But i say they game is a very nice. I am willing to buy it.

This game so far is looking great. Played the demo, enjoyed it very much. A couple problems. No prone position, this is a must for any tactical shooter. No destructive environments. I mean, at least let me knock pots and pans around. When I launch a grenade into a kitchen I want it to be a hurricane of food and cutlery, not just a little dirt bomb. Also I had a problem with not being able to shoot corpses and view the ragdoll, may sound morbid, but it adds tons to the game. (But at least there is finally ragdoll in an arcade-y type WWII game. Anyway, lets see how the full game turns out, until I read some reviews this is on my perhaps list

I like it and i am gonna buy it but i do not like the fact that there is still no destructible environments..i mean when grenades pop up close to a wall it should damage the wall somewhat. The game is based on unreal3 engine which promised even more in the world of gaming and what you could do in a game...i guess the dev forgot that part and focused only on modeling and texturing in the game. All i see here is a prettier better sounding medal of honor game....nothing much more.

YAY! i hope this is more realistic then the CODs and other MOH games, i hate run and gun games! as for playing as germans, forget it, subject is too touchy. what if arabs nuked NY, and in 60 years from now 13 year olds will play as them in a video game? killing nazis is just fine with me, respect to all those who lost their lives in that war defending freedom.

I agree it is stupid to let players start with German weapons. I think this game could really be better if they let you play as Germans as well and you have to defend against the attackers. I guess that is multiplayer...

"andrwindmddl77" --> It is you my friend that is not informed. If YOU had played the demo, you'd seen that before the mission starts, you can change your weapons load out and select German guns to start the level with. Now, i want you to apologize to BlaMMord, give him/her a big kiss and say your sorry.

BlaMMoRD it says you get a thompson, m1 garand and a colt as your starting weapons right in the article. If your refering to the screenshot with the mp40 you pick it up during the mission. Also if you played the demo, it is open and there are a lot of places to flank your enemy.it was a better demo than i expected. i'll probably get this and COD4

Doesn´t make any sense that you can drop into combat with german weapons. Why the hell would the American army issue german weapons to their troops..? Other then that, its okay. Though i dislike the AI. You cant "flank" your enemy. Or surprise it. If you can see your enemy, they can see you too. Even when they got their back against you. Also, if they use "cover" you can always see their head. I mean come on?

so many shooters like COD 4 and Halo3 i question EA's logic in releasing this now, it should wait and p[olish it up more, alow people to get their fill on halo3 and cod4 and let this out next yr, cos its a bit broken at the mo and i cant see the reason to rush this.

Another WW2 game... It's too bad that Medal of Honor hasn't gone the way of Call of Duty and finally moved on from this dead setting. Anyways, i think this will be at least a half decent shooter just like all the other games before it. The other (VERY) similar games.

it sounds like it can offer a lot in terms of gameplay, but that also means it has much to live up to, which MOH games in the recent past have not done very well.

I just played the demo on 360 and I was not impressed. Hopefully EA put this demo together quick and have something much better for the full version. I didn't think the graphics were very good, especially compared with COD2. Then there was the voice over in the first cut scene. The dude doing the briefing sounded so monotone and uninterested that it just didn't set the mood. My last complaint is with the weapons. I'd put my bead right on an enemies head, stop moving, double check, and still completely miss. This happened numerous times. OK, maybe I should lighten up a little...this game will still get a better review than Hour of Victory, but I will be very suprised to see this game get better than an 8.0.

Tried out the demo out last night, went through once fairly easly then went back for a second go and I found it slightly harder as I was trying out landing at different places. The graphics look and the game play looks good to. I found the grenades a bit of let down I know this is only a game but in real life you would kill a few more men than you do in the game. I have been lookig forward to this game release and I can say I am still going to buy it as some has already said it is a vast improvement on Medal of Honor Paffic. I hope the rest of the game is as good as the demo.

Why is it that every TOPIC turns into a Consol War ?? I mean comon you fanboys from both sides . GROW UP !! it's true that the xbox360 is doing great job in providing great games and good services, but the PS3 is no less powerful as a machine, YA it does suck for the moment because of the lack of great titles and some issues, but in five or six months it will have great titles too, so both machnies are great !! in fact there's no consol war going on, the war is waged by you stupid fanboys; you keep barking like dogs each one for the console he onws, damn you make all these stupid comments and you turn these forums into crap !!! I own an x360 and i'm not entending to buy a PS3 but still I respect anyone who loves or wants to buy the ps3 because each f**** console has its own strengths and weaknesses you dumbasses !! so live with that and stop this meaningless WAR !! concerning the demo of MOH Airborne, ya the game is gonna be good, it has potential , it has good graphics and sweet gameplay .. so i'm definitely in for this game !!

R-ZZZ, the game may be short in length, but with the total freedom of landing wherever and accomplishing objectives in any way you choose, the game's campaign will have lots of replay value. But don't forget the multiplayer mode, I hear in Official Xbox Magazine that its a blast in multiplayer. Anyway the game sounds sweet, can't wait to play the demo.

I found the PC demo to be terrible due to the enemy AI. I played through it on normal difficulty and was totally dissapointed. I enjoyed the drop and the free roaming objectives but the AI was making me laugh. I mean at points there was that much going on some of the poor german troops didnt know which way to run, they were like headless chickens!! I really wasnt impressed. I could pretty much charge at any position and spray gerries with thompson, it was really unrealistic. COD2 owns you.

What exactly is everyone complaining about 'outdated' graphics for. Please note that I am playing the PC version, not the 360, but with everything cranked it is better than any other WWII game that I have played. Trashing this game based on how you think Hell's Highway will look before you have seen the demo is simply ignorant.

I enjoyed the demo very much. Its was really fun, oh to be honset i rather play moh airborne than bioshock. But the question is how long the fun is going to last? If its about 6-8 hrs its only a rental, sadly.
